School of Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts

The Arizona State University School of Art in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts is one of the top public art schools in the nation. Its faculty are internationally recognized and lauded for their innovative research, while its graduates are recognized for their talent through careers that range from professional artists and designers, to scholars, curators, educators and leaders in creative industries and institutions. Faculty depth and diversity across all

areas of practice and research and the program’s location within a public research university offer a vibrant context in which to learn and grow. And if that is not incentive enough, we are situated within the enticing Southwest Sonoran desert culture and climate; a vibrant, young urban area laced with mountain trails and parks and within an easy drive of an international border and the Los Angeles art scene.

I am

I am pleased to know of your interest in the ASU School of Art where we offer a top-tier Art School experience at a public university price. We believe creativity and critical inquiry are central values in human culture. Art is not only the organizing principle underlying our curriculum, but a way of seeing, thinking and being in the world. We foster innovation, critical inquiry and experimentation within our diverse student body by rewarding risk-taking, encouraging peer-to-peer exchange and supporting embodied knowledge. As a student in the Herberger Institute’s School of Art, you will benefit from our position within one of the largest public research universities in the country. Students have access to the talented faculty not just in the ASU School of Art but world-class scholars, scientists and professionals in countless areas of study including sustainability, social transformation, border studies, life sciences and space exploration. As a student in one of five schools within the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts, you will find it easy to integrate an art focus with a breadth of cultural forms, histories and approaches including architecture, design, dance, music, theatre, film, as well as digital arts and media. Our new Grant St. Studios building in downtown Phoenix situates us among world-class cultural institutions, a burgeoning downtown community and the leading edge of urban development.

At the ASU School of Art, we teach students to see the future in their materials, to be present in the moment, and to know the history of their media. Students pour everything they know into their studio practice and exit with the skills to redefine art making in the 21st century. – Assistant Professor Binh Danh

The ASU School of Art boasts several top-ten nationally ranked programs, yet we remain affordable and accessible. This is extremely important to me since I understand, from my own experience putting myself through school, that a significant predictor of your ability to pursue your creative and professional path is your ability to graduate without an overwhelming burden of debt. I feel fortunate to have the opportunity to be a part of the community of makers and learners that is the ASU School of Art in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts. I am certain if you choose to pursue your education here, you will be challenged, guided and supported to go beyond your greatest vision of yourself.

A unique aspect of our art history program is that our students conduct original research on works of art in museums and private collections. They develop techniques for visual analysis, attention to detail, assessment of historical context and critical thinking – all skills that can be essential in any profession. – Professor Claudia Brown

The ASU School of Art offers studio facilities that enable students to move easily between form, process and imagination. We boast well-maintained facilities in printmaking, ceramics, darkroom, digital and non-silver photography, neon, foundry-based and electronic sculpture, book arts, wood turning, blacksmithing, weaving, 3-D printing and rapid prototyping, HD video, interactive performance, computer animation and more. Grant Street Studios (GSS) (featured on the right) is the exciting new home for many of our MFA graduate programs (Painting, Drawing, Fibers, Intermedia, Sculpture and Photography). Occupying almost 40,000 sq. ft. of a newly renovated historic warehouse space in downtown Phoenix, GSS hosts 50 graduate studios, 2 School of Art galleries (Step Gallery and Northlight Gallery of Photography), production facilities, critique space and event space. Two more galleries that we support and maintain are the Harry Wood Gallery and Gallery 100. While these galleries exhibit work by students, faculty, alumni and community members year-round, the ASU School of Art also enjoys a close association with the campus-based ASU Art Museum with its cutting-edge socially engaged exhibitions, recently launched international artist residency program and exceptional collections. Students have open access to all university libraries, including a specialized Architecture and Environmental Design Library and significant media arts holdings.

The ASU School of Art is a close partner of and energetic collaborator with the museum; we join forces on exhibitions, visiting scholar programs and of course the downtown artist residencies. But more than just working together, the students and faculty are part of the larger conversation the museum has with the university, the city and the world. – Gordon Knox, Director, ASU Art Museum

Many of our programs are integrally connected to the surrounding social, cultural and business communities. Our supervised internship program, led by faculty within the ASU School of Art for more than 20 years, has supported more than 600 internships in a wide variety of cultural institutions in the region, state, nation and world. In addition to pursuing their lives as emerging artists, scholars and educators, our graduates find meaningful work as gallery and curatorial assistants; exhibition preparators; art teachers; design, media, gaming and entertainment industry professionals; museum and cultural institution support staff; public art project managers; artists assistants; technical assistants in specialized facilities (computercontrolled studio practices, printshops, foundries, photographic labs, furniture and instrument workshops, jewelry studios); as well as antique restorers, appraisers and entrepreneurs. New student opportunities are initiated each year through the shared excitement and creativity that extends throughout the Herberger Institute. Beyond that, our partnerships with local businesses include ongoing programs with Intel Corporation (copper donation program), Blick Art Materials, Bollinger Atelier, Squire Patton Boggs and Curator Engine, a new start-up that matches student and alumni artists with local business requests for purchases and commissions.

today

The Southwest and its ancient cultures have always attracted artists, intellectuals and visionaries who lead the nation in using art to understand our relation to nature and to realize sustainability.
