Annual Lineman Rodeo Held

ASU-Newport is always proud to host our cooperative partners for the Annual Lineman Rodeo! Congratulations to Chance Schueren, apprentice lineman from First Electric Cooperative, for winning Champion Apprentice Lineman at the ASU-Newport Lineman Rodeo in April. Chance won second place in the egg race, first place in pole top rescue, first place in the 100 AMP switch change out and was the overall champion apprentice. Chance will get the opportunity to compete at the 34th Annual International Lineman’s Rodeo in Bonner Springs, KS in October.

Images of Success and Service at ASU-Newport ASUN Automotive Service and Collision Repair & Refinishing Technology Programs took 3rd place in the University Heights Lions Club Auto Show in April! This 1971 Camaro took 3rd in its class, and is regularly used in our Automotive Service Technology Program. Our hot rod recently received a complete overhaul by our Collision Repair and Refinishing Technology Program featuring the green upper portion and an iridium base with a purple/silver crackle transition! Proud of our student’s work and thankful for the recognition at the University Heights Lions Club Auto Show.

Our Culinary students had an aloha luncheon for ASUN-Jonesboro faculty and staff as their spring luncheon project in April. The food, and atomsphere were very festive!

IGNITE Academy, Allied Health, Practical Nursing, and ARNEC students teamed up as we crafted a real life scenario with our state-ofthe-art patient simulator.

Food Service and Management students Meghan Cantara and Jessica Rucker received CGSP (Certified Guest Service Professional) recognition from the American Hotel and Lodging Association.

Recognized worldwide, this designation is the highest acknowledgement of awarding winning guest service for employees in the lodging industry.

Sounds of Summer, a Beach Boys Tribute, performed on April 8 at the Newport Campus Center for the Arts. The audience enjoyed a musical trip down memory lane!

With help from campus contributors, our ASUN PBL Chapter was able to donate almost 10 gallons of pop can tabs to Ronald McDonald House Charities.

The Pop Tab Program raises valuable funds and awareness for RMHCA. The funds help pay for families and children to stay at the House while their child is receiving medical treatment at the hospital.

We are proud of our ASUN PBL students who participated, competed and attended the 2017 PBL State Spring Leadership Conference. Awards included: 4th Largest Local Chapter Membership; ASUN PBL Gold Chapter Award; Armaan Dhrani, 1st in Accounting Principles**; Krystal Barrett - 1st in Business Communications in 2 year colleges**, 2nd Overall for 2 year and 4 year colleges; Cole Nooner and Amanda Cochran - 4th in Business Ethics; Jasmine Clay - 5th in Community Service Project; Brandi Barksdale - 3rd Computer Applications; Brandi Moyer - 4th Help Desk; Alfredia Hampton, Jessica Rucker, and Jane Onovwerosuke - 4th in Hospitality Management; Meghan Cantera, Jessica Rucker, and Jane Onovwerosuke - 1st in Human Resources Management**; Kim Groom - 4th for 2 year colleges in Macroeconomics and Microeconomics. Those with a ** designation are eligible to compete at Nationals in Anaheim California in June.

SkillsUSA Competition ASUN was well represented at the Arkansas SkillsUSA competition on April 11. Our students earned 17 medals at the recent event in Hot Springs.

Competing against other community colleges, the following students earned medals in Cosmetology, Energy Control Technology, Welding, Automotive Service Technology, Collision Repair & Refinishing Technology, Advanced Manufacturing, Computer & Networking Technology, and Hospitality Services. Our gold medal winners will head to Louisville, Ky this summer to represent ASUN at the National SkillsUSA competition.

SkillsUSA is a partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. SkillsUSA helps each student excel, and is a national nonprofit organization serving teachers and high school and college students who are preparing for careers in trade, technical and skilled service occupations, including health occupations

ASUN-Marked Tree High School Competition Arkansas State University-Newport at Marked Tree hosted 80 High School Students from 12 high schools throughout Northeast Arkansas to compete in one of three competitions: Automotive Service Technology, Collision Repair & Refinishing Technology and Computer & Networking Technology.

Tyler Howton of Valley View High School took top honors in the Automotive Service Technology division.

Finishing second was Cameron Harris of Valley View, while Gregoire Confer of Valley View took third place.

Second place finishers were awarded $750 renewable scholarships to ASUN and tool kits, while third place finishers received $500 renewable ASUN scholarships and tool kits. Students from Westside, Paragould, Walnut Ridge, Valley View, Brookland, Greene County Tech, Jonesboro, Bay, Harrisburg, Newport, Riverside and Nettleton took part in the competition.

ASUN Students Win at PBL Conference Eleven Arkansas State University-Newport students earned recognition at the Future Business Leaders of AmericaPhi Beta Lambda Leadership Conference and State Competition held earlier in April in Little Rock.

Armaan Dhrani, a Business student from Jonesboro, captured first place in the Accounting competition while Hospitality students Meghan Cantera of Jonesboro, Jessica Rucker of Bono and Jane Onovwerosuke of Lagos, Nigeria came in first place in the Human Resources Management competition.

Community Service Project.

ASU-Newport received the Gold Chapter Award and was recognized for the fourth largest local chapter membership in Arkansas.

Future Business Leaders of America-Phi Beta Lambda, Inc. (FBLA-PBL) is the largest career student organization in the world. Each year, FBLA-PBL helps over 200,000 members prepare for careers in business.
