Adair Named Education/Public Sector CFO of the Year by Arkansas Business Adam Adair, Vice Chancellor for Finance and Administration at Arkansas State University-Newport, was named Education/Public Sector Arkansas CFO of the Year by Arkansas Business at a luncheon held Nov. 2 in Little Rock. The awards are part of an annual event produced by Arkansas Business that honors lifetime achievements and chief financial officers in several categories. Other finalists in the Education/Public Sector category were Sara Lenehan, financial director for the city of Little Rock, and Dorethea Yates, financial director and treasurer for the city of Hot Springs. “Mr. Adair has a value-added instinct, constantly benchmarking and researching best practices to support institutional excellence, and to help ASU-Newport remain one of

the leading two-year colleges in the state,” said Dr. Sandra Massey, Chancellor at Arkansas State University-Newport. “He has been instrumental in establishing a culture of cost-consciousness at the institution. While highly-educated, motivated and skilled, I most appreciate his sincere concern for the welfare and success of the students at ASU-Newport.” Since joining ASU-Newport in 2012, Adair has spearheaded the college’s development of a comprehensive master plan, and is currently overseeing ASUN’s transition to a new Enterprise Resource Planning System, the software that manages all aspects of student services and data. Adair is also responsible for ASUN’s implementation of a zero-based budgeting model that led to a cost savings of approximately $500,000 in

facilities, resulting in annual decreases in college’s energy consumption. “We are actually changing lives,” Adair told Arkansas Business. “Every day what we do impacts the lives of not only the students we serve, but their families, their children and their children’s children…That’s why I love what I do and am honored to be doing this.” Adair earned his degree in Accounting from Arkansas State University, and his MBA from The University of Arkansas at Little Rock. He is also a graduate of the Next Generation of Chief Business Officers Institute program presented by the Southern Association of College & University Business Officers, and is a graduate of the

ASU-Newport Student Government Association members and staff members assisted with the annual City of Newport Christmas tree and lighting setup Nov. 11. ASUN is thankful to its staff and students for their spirit of volunteerism.

The Side Street Steppers, a gramophone-era band from Memphis, provided lunchtime entertainment to staff and students Nov. 17 to kick off the 2016-17 Concert/Lecture Series. Newport High School students also enjoyed the show, as the school district bussed approximately 40 students to ASUN for lunch and music.

Higher Learning Commission Informational Fairs were held on the Jonesboro and Marked Tree campus locations during the month of November. Anfernee Person (left) was the winner in the student drawing for a $50 gift card. He was presented with the gift card by Ike Wheeler, Jennifer Ballard and Jeff Bookout, who staffed the information desks at the fairs.

Faculty and staff members enjoyed the annual Thanksgiving feast that was sponsored by the Faculty Senate Nov. 14 on the Newport campus.

Lori Hutton, Assistant Professor of English, advises a new student at New Student Orientation, held Nov. 18 on the Jonesboro campus. NSO sessions are in full swing in preparation for the Spring 2017 semester.

The Bread of Life Food Pantry continued to serve ASU-Newport students on all three campus locations during the month of November. ASU-Newport is extremely grateful to the Bread of Life Food Pantry for providing nutritious food to our students on a regular basis.

Hospitality students Jessica Rucker and Meghan Cantara earned their certification for the Purchasing component of the ManageFirst program, a management development program sponsored by the National Restaurant Association.

Staff members at the Jonesboro Adult Education Center (upper photo) and student members of ASU-Newport’s Phi Beta Lambda chapter (lower photo) collected coloring books and crayons for donation to the Riverside School Middle-Level FBLA. The donations were in memory of a Riverside student who lost her battle with cancer, and the coloring books and crayons were taken to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis for distribution to their patients.

Open mic Coffeehouse sessions (above three photos) were held on all three campus locations during the month of November and featured songs, poems and readings by students and staff.
