ASU-Newport Holds Ribbon Cutting for IGNITE Academy
Officials from ASU-Newport, the ASU System, Bradford High School, Cedar Ridge High School, Newport High School, Tuckerman High School and the Arkansas Department of Career Education joined IGNITE students, ASUN faculty and staff, local and state dignitaries and elected officials to cut the ribbon Oct. 31 at ASUN’s IGNITE Academy. See additional photos, page 2 A large crowd was on hand Oct. 31 as Arkansas State University-Newport held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for its new IGNITE Academy. IGNITE students, ASUN faculty and staff, local and state dignitaries and elected officials joined administrators from the ASU System, ASU-Newport, the four participating high schools and the Arkansas Department of Career Education to ceremonially cut the ribbon at the open house for ASU-Newport’s new pilot program. The IGNITE (Investing in
Gen Next Industrial and Technical Education) Academy provides opportunities for high school students at four area school districts to earn workforce-ready credentials upon graduation. ASU-Newport Chancellor Dr. Sandra Massey opened the ceremony by thanking those in attendance, as well as the many in the crowd who were instrumental in the launch of the IGNITE Academy. Those attending also heard remarks from ASU System President Dr. Charles Welch and Jon Chadwell, Executive
Director of the Newport Economic Development Commission. IGNITE Academy students Chancery Sutterfield, Dalton Bennett, Sierra Clark and Aaron Turner closed the ceremony with comments regarding their experiences as part of the program. The program allows students from Newport High School, Tuckerman High School, Cedar Ridge High School and Bradford High School to receive training in Computer Network Technology, Welding, Diesel Technology or Phlebotomy/ Certified Nursing Assistant.
These fields of study were determined through ASUN’s collaboration with the four school districts, program advisory committees and through discussions with regional leaders in business and industry. Upon graduation from high school, students completing the program will have earned transferable credits and certificates of proficiency or technical certificates in the four fields of study. Approximately 60 students from the four school districts combined are part of the IGNITE Academy inaugural class.

ASUN Hosts IMRAC’s ‘Meet the Authors’
More than 20 authors were on hand Oct. 22 when ASU-Newport hosted the third-annual Iron Mountain Regional Arts Council’s “Meet the Authors” event in the ASUN Library. “Meet the Authors” is open to area authors and provides an opportunity to visit with literary enthusiasts from the area. Works from various writers were available for signing and purchase as well. Among the authors present was Bruce Smock, Assistant Professor of Speech at ASU-Newport. Smock was on hand to display his textbook, “Smock’s 12 Paradigms of Oral Communication,” which he recently completed. The textbook is currently used in ASU-Newport’s Oral Communications courses. Smock wrote the textbook with the students in mind, and proceeds from the sales of the text will be returned to ASUN’s student emergency fund.

ASU-Newport hosted Dr. Maria Markham (center), Director of the Arkansas Dept. of Higher Education on our Newport campus Oct. 3. Among other things, Dr. Markham visited with Diesel Technology staff and students during her campus tour.
Country music legend Ronnie Milsap opened the 201617 Patron Series with an Oct. 13 performance at the ASUN Center for the Arts. Milsap entertained a large crowd with many of his 40 #1 hits.
On behalf of ASUN Career Pathways, Dean of Students Kimberly Long, Career Pathways Case Manager Scott Hinson and Administrative Specialist Carolyn Woodard accept the Outstanding Achievement Award from Dr. Karon Rosa, Program Director for Career Pathways Initiative at the annual Arkansas Community Colleges Conference in Hot Springs Oct. 1011.

October was Breast Cancer Awareness Month. ASU-Newport hosted speakers and other events on all three campuses throughout the month. Thank you to Penny Jones, Community Educator at St. Bernards for speaking to our Jonesboro students .
ASUN’s newest Certified Nursing Assistant class on the Jonesboro campus took time for a selfie when they dropped by the Student Services window to have their ID badges printed.
Adult Education instructors and staff presented “Spider Mania” in both Jonesboro and Marked Tree. This one-day emphasis targeted skills needed for success in both GED and post-secondary academics - critical thinking skills, analytical skills, textual criticism, problem-solving skills, communication and collaboration skills - in the context of a scientific inquiry into the most famous member of the arachnid family.

The first Higher Learning Commission Information Fair was held on the Newport campus Oct. 20. More than 100 students, staff and faculty members visited the fair and received information regarding ASUN’s upcoming HLC reaffirmation visit. HLC Information Fairs will also be held in Jonesboro and Marked Tree during the month of November.
Bobbie Buchanan, Mary Houchin and Judy Jernigan staffed the ASU-Newport tent Oct. 1 at the Terrapin Derby in Lepanto.
The Practical Nursing students on the Newport campus were in the Halloween spirit, dressing in costume on Oct. 31.
