avenue – lat.: advenire – to arrive at, to reach, to come to The Gehl’s urban plan for Aspern Seestadt revives the public space archetypes in the context of a contemporary city – lake as the central main square, ringstrasse as a connecting element and chaussée for the main road connecting the rail station with the core of the neighbourhood. This forms the essence and uniqueness of the project - it examines the possibility of building a neighbourhood for the 21st century in the continuity of the usual planning principles of a compact city. All with the minimisation of traffic in most of the streets, blue and green infrastructure concept, and community-based housing. Our aim was to design in detail the main road-chaussée and its vicinity as the part that creates the identity of the whole neighbourhood. Chaussée as a type of protohighway served for connecting the cities and then for crossing the fortification as the main city road to which the avenues led – passageways bordered by trees on both sides. The word avenue comes from the Latin advenire meaning to arrive at, to reach, to come to. Using the principle of arrival to the point and height dominants located in vista axes of the bystreets, we highlighted the main street in the fabric of Aspern Seestadt, and on the larger, urban scale, connected the neighbourhood with its surroundings, serving as a gate to the city. Designed buildings form view axes from the railway, that becomes a ‘perspective line’ from which one can look through the urban structure. The added bridges and roads increased the permeability of the land and neighbourhood that is now more of a closed isle in the matrix of suburban housing. In the project, we worked with Gehl’s conception of four strains – yellow, blue, green and mainly red running through the main roads. The northern part of the red strain connects the rail station on the north with the core of the neighbourhood and will become the main commerce and cultural street for pedestrians. We completed these basic strains with light blue – spiritual spaces and monuments; purple – main institutions; and orange – meeting points between the neighbourhoods. Based on the strains and vista axes, we located the ‘cultural verticals’ pointing to significant points or institutions in the area.

A road is a tribute to space. Every stretch of road has meaning in itself and invites us to stop. In the world of roads and paths, beauty is continuous and constantly changing; it tells us at every step: ‘Stop!‘”. – Milan Kundera, Immortality

In this part, we focus on the individual sites that follow the main “red” avenue. The avenue represents the red strain that forms the backbone of the whole design. We design the materiality and position of the trees and verify the design in views through the city.

STRAIN SYSTEM GEHL ARCHITECTS

The basis for the planning of the new district of Seestadt was prepared by the architectural firm Gehl architects. It uses a system of function strains, which is divided into four groups - four colors. Red is a concentration of culture and comRED mertion. It represents the identity of the cultural - entertainment strain, and place and includes an active ground floor everything related (restaurants, gallery..) red strain Ringstraßen - a ring road, demarcing the YELLOW city and providing transport, connecting the transport individual parts public transport

Blue is associated with water. It is located yellow strain BLUE around the lake, which is the focal point of water activities, sports, leisure activities Seestadt. (swimming, swimming pools, fishing) walking routes connecting water bodies

Design - addition of a network of roads and meeting points between neighbours The routes have two themes: cultural and historical (light blue), which leads from the memorial of the Napoleon‘s Battle of Wagram in the north to the educative trail about Napoleon in the south. The second theme is natural (green-blue), which connects lakes, forests and draws.

The passage through the main road is designed on the principle of the classic symphony of four movements divided by pauses. Movements differ by the height of buildings and rhythm of facades. I. movement – Allegro – exposition with high rise buildings showing the main theme of the main road II. movement – Andante – a slow movement with longer facade rhythm III. movement – Minuet – shorter facade rhythm, elevated corners IV. movement – Sonata – recapitulation of the main theme pause – rest between movements

ENTRANCES The frequency of entrances and the articulation of the facades is based on the activity on the ground floor. The design proceed from on the publication How to study public life, where Jan Gehl and Brigitte Svarre divides facades into the categories of active, friendly, mix, inactive, boring. Due to the fact that we are on the main street, we divide the facades only into the first four categories.

Density of a block We set the ideal population density at 300 people/ ha on the basis of reference Prague classes. The average built-up area of Aspern is 400 m², the gross floor area is 280 m² → 4 apartments (70 m2) → at least 8 inhabitants per floor. Basic height level of houses 6th floor → 32 - 40 inhabitants. The area of the block averages 900 m2 → 6 - 9 apartment buildings

1. no blind spots, variation of functions in the ground floor, lots of details 10 - 14 doors / 100m

2. a lot of details, few blind spots 10 - 14 doors / 100m

3. large and small units, several blind spots 6 - 10 doors / 100 m

NORTHERN BUILDING AXES AND TRANSITIONS

The design of the buildings in the north is specific, because in this part we have to deal with crossing the railway line, which forms the northern border of the city. Designed buildings form view axes from the railway, that becomes a ‘perspective line’ from which one can look through the urban structure. We are proposing position for possible new bridges and roads in order to increase the permeability of the land and neighbourhood that is now more of a closed isle in the matrix of suburban housing.
