NEW CITY DISTRICT

Aspern, formely a village with a vast airfield, present day an emerging urban centre in north-eastern Vienna. Seestadt Aspern, labeled as the largest contemporary housing project in Europe, arises on an area of 240 hectares. Aside from accomodating 20 000 new citizens in the future and providing equal amount of workplaces, the project aims to set new approaches in urban development. The Master Plan was designed by Johannes Tovatt architects and divides the area of roughly 240 hectares into plots around the central lake. The Plan doesn’t aim to restrict or dictate the development in any way, but rather to serve as an impulse towards the creation of quality public space and sustainable buildings.

BLOCK F12

Upon visting the site, there was a consensus amongs the students that Aspern lacks sociocultural activities. Facilities not only local residents would enjoy, but people from the center of Vienna would come to visit. Based on the masterplan Block F12 is designed to be residential with flexible use on the ground. Our poposal is a residential block with different cultural acitivites on ground level - galery, theatre and a multifunctional hall.

COMMUNITY HOUSING INITIATIVES

The project supports modern forms of community housing (such as Baugruppen), as it generates social diversity and a good functional mix. Investors, developers and community housing initiatives - all have an equal chance of acquiring a plot of land if they meet the requirements. Already an entire house block was dedicated to baugruppe housing and the quarter relies on more of these initiatives in the future.

DER DAMPFER Residential building & Multifunctionall hall A community, mix of couples and families with similiar interests, decide to build a home that will meet their lifestyle needs. District managment will provide the plot on one condition - the ground floor and underground floors wil have another private owner who invests into a cultural facility. GSEducationalVersion

Der Dampfer serves a tight community in the floors above the ground, whilst below ensuring entertainment to the public. Access to housing is from the courtyard. Shared spaces on each ground support the relationships of its occupants on a daily basis. Children have their own playroom, allowing parents to leave them in a safe environment. The communal terrace is a perfect place to host parties and events. For those who sometimes prefer a little privacy, hand-picked apartments have a loggia. The house has two faces, the one facing the main road is more tight and closed to the public eye and noise, whereas the other face is more open and oversees the activities of its inhabitants. Underground multifunctional hall is a public space that allows for various events to be held there – ranging from concerts to dances, presentations, exhibitions etc. The place is available to rent and above is a large café & restaurant open to the Hertzka park. Der Dampfer means “steamship” in german, the name comes from the ground plan of the house. Just like a crew headed out to sea on a shared journey, the occupants are on a safe boat that is headed towards collaboration and closeness.
