Project Background • The project site is located in Sheffield and consists the areas of Wicker, West bar and Castle gate. • We have concentrated our urban strategies in the Wicker area to reappropriate the industrial neighbourhood to create a housing neighbourhood.

Position • The reason we chose ‘Synthesis’ as a theme was to devise methods and techniques with which the relationship between man and nature can be explored in a beautiful way, and also to create a system which is a collection of different ideas by the people of the community.
Concept of our principles and strategies
Analysis • We analysed and mapped the site for four different aspects. Situation, Land ownership, policies and potential synergies. • We thoroughly examined and found the overlaps so we can choose our potential sites.

Design Principles • After thorough analysis and precendent studies we decided on our design principles on Physical, Social and Economic aspects. • On par with each of these principles we developed our design strategies for community led development in Wicker area.
• Based on our preliminary design principles the diagram illustrates our first version of strategies. • We have developed these strategies after the analysis and considering the potential sites depensing on different analysis and finding the overlaps. • We have also grouped the organisations depending on the function they perform in the outside world.
Spatial Design Strategies
A vision we developed as a group to show the people what we imagine Wicker Riverisde to look like after the next ten years. We plan to make the road in to a pedestrian friendly route changing the direction of vehicles and buses. This will also make the street safe for children to move on.
SPATIAL DESIGN STRATEGY FOR WICKER - A VISION
Short Term Strategies • Community centre will be the first stepping base to lead the community and bring them together to set up a base of operations. • Community kitchen will be established parallely with the community centre where people from different background come and sell their own food bringing on economic growth to the community. • Along the vacant building near the River side we plan to re purpose it to become a RIverside Cafe and bring in more public from the ciy centre and make the area more energetic.
Medium Term Strategies • Community Led School will be constructed by the community with support from Sheffield CLT for easy access for children of the community. • Community park opposite to the existing park will bring people together and strengthen the bonds and relationships in the community. • Another public park on the other side of the housing that will be mainly for the general public for leisure.
Long Term Strategies • For our long term strategy we wanted to provide the existing residents of the area with the development of affordable community housing. • The construction of this housing will be supported local communities and Sheffield city council. We also have provided an opportunity of funding from the government. • An urban green strip is also planned for long term that will create a environmentally better neighbourhood by blocking the pollution from the expressway.
Community Led Development Program for Wicker
• This strategic diagram illustrates the process of the program for the community. • It also shows the possible partnerships for the community to grow and elevate.
Urban Installation • Before the actual day of the event we were planning on installing on the foot bridge but we had to change the location because the place was not strategically successfull. • After our relocation at the corner of Wicker and Nursery street we had a lot of people’s eyes gazing on eyes which led to deep interactions with the public. • The audience were quite different ranging from people from different communities.
Handouts that were handed to the public was comprised of our future vision and link to find more dat online

Few of the youngsters who were interested “We have a Muslim community here which I think can be added to your partnership diagram”
“I would like to be interested in the future”
People discussing their opinions and ideas with us
“I certainlly think more green space would be a great idea”
“So you are saying housing is going to come up in this area soon? ”
“Synthesis”. From this concept we devised Short, Medium and Long term strategies that will drive the Community Led Development in Wicker.
What does our spatial design strategy mean?
Critical Reflection
It takes time and efforts to build on ideas and analyze them simultaneously and hence I am going to critically analyze my work. Every project has its unique design and methodology. Firstly, I will talk about the methodology and the strategies that were developed over time.
What was my group’s methodology? Since we had five sites in Sheffield to choose from, five of us selected site-4. During the course of this project we had to split in to two groups because of disputes. The first part consisting of the analysis was worked on together as one group, but later on we had two different proposals coming out. Every tuesday after the studio class we all sat together and discussed the events and what the next step should be. Accordingly we scheduled group meetings and met to start working on our next step. The work was hectic because comparatively our group was much smaller and it was harder to do the amount of work In the beginning stages we started with mapping & analysis of data collected on site and on web., especially from the Sheffield CIty Coucil Website. Though we had less amount of data about land ownership because it was important for us to support our final design propoasal. Since we worked on this project in a group but all of us worked together to produce different strategies
What and how did we decide on our group strategy? The area we chose was quite big, so we had to choose a few sites in the area that we were going to propose strategies on. The way we did this was use all the data from the analysis and decide which area has the most potential. Also after talking to individuals on the site we were confused because the area consisted of people from different countries like turkey, jamaica, etc., and also refugees. So it was much more complicated whether we were focusing on immigrants or a particular age group. So firstly we decided and created some principles so it wil be easy for us to decide on strategies. This was only possible because of SWOT analysis that we did to recognise the issues and potential in the site. We came to a conclusion that we wanted to create something that is one. Or how all the different communities come together to create one big community. Thus we had our concept
Just like I explained in the last paragraph ‘Synthesis’ is nothing but bringing together of different components to create one whole. So in order to do this we create strategies like setting up of a Community centre and a community kitchen to firstly bring the people together. Also we wanted our design to be coherent with the nature, hence we proposed parks and urban buffer so it would help the environment of the area.
How did our precedent studies influence the design strategies? We looked at several precedents online, but none of them were not something we reflected on. Most of the strategies were created by us with the help of our principles. At this point I would want to state that it was difficult to get information if any Community centre already existed because there was no information on the internet, because earlier we had recieved information from a person working at the Sheffield City Council that there was a community centre. Nonetheless we did try to get information from other sources but it was unsuccessul because of time constraints.
How much percentage of it was actually group work? I woudn’t want to point any fingers here but this project has really tired me because the actual work was only done by two people. It was really difficult because we would have to take hours of our time explaining other group people what to do and apart from that they do it very slowly. It took us a long time because comparitively other groups had six to seven people working. So it was sleepless nights that was the secondary result of this project. The major dispute happened because one of our group members was not ready to accept even though it was democratic solution. Because of all these issues I was disturbed and we had to wait and clear our minds and start all the way over again.
What did i learn from this project? Firstly talking about the positives, i was really satisfied with my output even working under a lot of pressure and being insanely stressed. The we had a successfull public event which went really well even though a lot of people were not interested in the beginning I pulled them in by calling them for a few moments of their time. It developed my verbal skills even more. We learnt more about community participation and it was the first time we showed our work to the general public instead of a fixed audience. The project had some negative effects. It has been the single most difficult project I have worked on in this course because of an irregular group. We also had very less information from the city council so it was difficult to justify our decisions of our proposal.
What is the future of Wicker? Wicker has diverse communities. It has always been a landmark in Sheffield, but over the past decade its been avoided even though it is right next to the city centre. From interviews we found out that people think that Wicker is not a safe place but people denied it saying that it isn’t true. Hence I believe that Wicker has lot of potential for development in the future, mainly because of the huge number of immigrants living in the area.
Will Community Led Development work in Wicker? It most surely will. In obvious cases there are gonna be ups and downs, but after the positive feedback we received from the audience we have belief that one day it will be a dream come true.
Conclusion I would just like to conclude by saying that compared to other two group projects that we did before this project really stressed me a lot. Even though I produced good work,I believe I would have produced much better work if we had more resources and time to work from. But apart from that I believe we went out there and delivered our ideas to the public and soon hope for a change from the community.
