BEING - DIC is the world Abstract: The project is connected to the field of a sustainable way of living and responsible consumption and to the search for creative and innovative solutions for improving the quality of life and cohabitation in a particular community. The project is conducted within the educational institution DIC (Ivan Cankar Students’ Halls of Residence), which represents a “laboratory” with 600 pupils and 100 students. The purpose of the project is to raise the social and environmental awareness of the young through concrete activities and experience. It is conducted in the form of research workshops (contemporary arts filed) and individual events and actions. We expect that, through cooperation (and comparison) with other similar projects, the project’s results will extend beyond DIC into the broader public space. BEING: to exist, to live, to survive, to be aware, to feel, to sympathize, to stand for... there is no absolute truth, there are only working descriptions, all is in motion, undergoing a change. The world is all people, all beings, all views, all stands, all actions, etc. The BEING project is connected to the field of sustainable development and ecology in the broadest sense of the word. It proceeds from a holistic view of the world, which demands an overall approach in facing contemporary, pressing challenges and their solutions. The world is an organic whole that cannot be separated into individual segments. The observers are not excluded and separated from the observed, the change has to start with them, wit their awareness. The research/reflection will be conducted by using contemporary digital tools and various multimedia art practices, by organizing events and concrete actions. The goal of the project is to raise awareness about the complexity and connectedness of one’s own being and the social and natural environment personal responsibility and the related possibility of change. “BEING” MEANS TAKING ACTION! MORE... BEING represents the continuation of the Divided God project, which examined intercultural dialogue, a sort of “ecology of human relations”. It includes a broader field of human and planetary coexistence and advocates the need to reconsider our present situation and raise the awareness of the young on contemporary pressing issues regarding our way to the future. Environmental and sustainable development issues are complex because they are a consequence of deeper economic and social causes that reach far back into the past and are generated by contemporary human beings and the social and economic framework in which they live and which they co-create. Actually, it is a “civilization question” of Western thought based on the Judeo-Christian paradigm and worldview according to which God gave human beings the power over all other living and non-living creation, thus separating them from and lifting them above nature. With globalisation and the predominant logic of economy, the so-called “casino or pyramid capitalism”, the triumph of Western thought got entangled in a hopeless situation. Economic growth and consumer mentality have become key factors of global economy; they have deepened the social, cultural and ethnic differences and have seriously cut into the energy, raw material and food resources of the planet. The human race has found itself in a situation that demands an immediate, radical change of its outlook and value system based on just human

relations, coexistence and a partner relationship between humans and the planet, the “habitat of habitats”, which are disappearing. The young who enter the world with an inherited “burden” and represent its continuation have the right, duty and responsibility to actively present their views, demands and solutions, which have to be taken into account. In the project, we proceed from the position that the world (government, authorities, decision-makers) is such as people deserve it, since the world is an external reflection of the ‘inside’ of contemporary human beings. The beginning of change (and of the BEING project) lies in concrete individuals, that is, the creators of and participants in the project. Concrete work, personal example, the search for and implementation of examples of good practices are preconditions, starting points, that can justify making demands on and suggesting solutions to others. The project has a strong component of environmental activism and is not without political ambitions! The participation of young people in decision-making regarding the questions that concern them and their future is a motivation, path and goal, which the project will pursue and realize. Honesty and responsible action on a personal and social level must become a condition and a criterion that all public institutions and public officials entrusted with decisionmaking and leadership will have to take into account and fulfil. The world begins in our head and at our doorstep. The motto ‘DIC is the world’ and the BEING project are two sides of the same coin. DIC represents an actual physical (local) and virtual (global) space, and the two cannot be separated. People who physically inhabit this space and numerous external co-operators, individuals and partner organizations represent the matrix of the actual world that can be changed and co-created. DIC is a world of its own, a “laboratory” (600 pupils, 90 students), enabling the measurement of results and the effects on the material and “conscious” level. The project is conceived as a campaign whose essential elements are composed of its visual identity, promo material, research workshops, multimedia productions, events and actions. The platform of the project is composed of:

interactive website www.pozitiv.si/biti research workshops and the resulting works in the field of performing and visual arts: video workshop, research and experimental video photo workshop divided into documentary photography recording the development and events of the project and the “My World” workshop, in which the young participants express their view of the world through photography and film theatre, street theatre and dance workshop organisation of various events and actions upon special occasions (earth day, sun day, human rights day, etc.) networking and connecting with other leisure activities (after-school activities), bodies and communities (e.g., the community of the students’ halls of residence), which actively contribute to the life at DIC public presentations of the project or individual works created in the project (special presentations, participation at festivals, etc.) BEING booklets and posters. BEING booklets and posters The BEING collection of booklets is published periodically and has a special meaning and role in the project. It deals with various questions of sustainable development and being in the broadest sense of the word. The topics of research are food, natural resources, recycling, health, various forms of pollution, etc. They are conceived so as to shed light on the problem at the global, abstract level, while they at the same time bring it closer to and make it relevant for the concrete DIC population. The booklets touch upon current problems perceived and felt by youngsters. They are created in connection to individual activities, initiatives and problem situations at DIC (other projects, after-school activities, DIC community). The presentation of booklets and posters take place in the framework of individual larger events, followed by concrete action, with the aim of a more lasting impact or long-term solution of the problem under consideration. The following booklets and posters have been published so far: BEING bread BEING water BEING beautiful. Timeline BEING is conceived as a three-year project for the 2009 – 20011 period 1st year / 2009/ Setting up the project’s platform; beginning to animate young people to join the project and its activities in our own community; the first productions and actions, establishing communication with the partners in the broader environment. 2nd and 3rd year / 2010 – 2011/ We anticipate a positive impact of the project and its measurable effects in our own community and a greater opening to the outside world. In the second and third year we intend to upgrade the cooperation with the partners from abroad by joining the international network of similar projects. This will give local topics a global, comparative dimension, and will contribute to a quality reflection and evaluation of the project. Idea and implementation: KUD POZITIV (Arts and Culture Association Pozitiv) and Ivan Ivan Cankar Students’ Halls of Residence with the support of the Youth Office of the City of Ljubljana

Cilj projekta predstavlja ozaveščanje o kompleksnosti in povezanosti lastnega bivanja, družbenega in naravnega okolja ter osebni odgovornosti in s tem povezano možnostjo spreminjanja “BITI” POMENI VSTOPITI V AKCIJO!

»kazino, oz. piramidnega kapitalizma« zapletel v brezizhoden položaj. Ekonomska rast in potrošnja miselnost sta postali ključna faktorja globalne ekonomije, poglobila sta družbene, kulturne in etične razlike in resno načenjata energetske, surovinske ter prehrambene vire planeta. Projekt je zastavljen v obliki kampanje, katerega bistvene elemente sestavljajo celostna podoba, promotivni materiali, raziskovalne delavnice, multimedijske produkcije, dogodki in akcije. Platformo projekta tvorijo: Interaktivani spletni portal www.pozitiv.si/biti Raziskovalne delavnice in v njih nastajajoče produkcije s področja scenskih in vizualnih umetnosti: Videodelavnica, raziskovalnega in experimentalnega videa Fotodelavnica, razdeljena na dokumentarno fotografijo, ki beleži razvoj in dogodke projekta

ter fotodelavnica imenovana “Moj svet”, ko mladi udeleženci s fotografijo in filmom izražaljo svoje videnje sveta Gledališka in plesna delavnica ter delavnica uličnega teatra Organizacija različnih dogodkov in akcij ob posebnih priložnostih (dan zemlje, dan sonca, dan človekovih pravic ipd.) mreženje in povezava z drugimi interesnimi dejavnostmi (krožki), organi in skupnostmi (npr. domska skupnost ipd), ki aktivno delujejo v domskem življenju Javne predstavitve projekta, oziroma posameznih produkcij nastalih v projektu (posebne predstavitve, udeležebe na festivalih ipd.) Knjižice in plakati BITI Zbirka knjižic BITI, izhaja periodično in ima poseben pomen in vlogo v projektu. Lotevajo se različnih vprašanj trajnostnega razvoja in bivanja v najširšem pomenu besede. Tematska področja raziskovanja so hrana, naravni viri, reciklaža, zdravje, različne oblike onesnaževanja ipd. Predstavitve knjižic in plakatov potekajo v okviru posameznih večjih dogodkov, pri čemer jim sledijo konkretne akcije, s ciljem trajnejšega vpliva, oziroma dolgoročnejše rešitve izpostavljenega problema. Sodelovanje z partnerji iz tujine nameravamo v drugem in tretjem letu njegovega trajanja nadgraditi z vključevanjem v mednarodno mrežo sorodnih projektov.
