b r i c --- Two coordinating fabrics, we used an embossed cotton in a splattered polkadot, and a woven cotton, both by Diamond Textiles --- 44” wide With sleeves: Fabric 1 2-3/4 Y Fabric 2 1-1/3 Y

Cutting Instructions

Fabric 2, cut two lower panels as shown, two bodice back pieces, one square patch 6” square and two hem strips 2” by the width of the fabric, + one tie 1” wide by the width of the fabric. Optional from a scrap of fabric in a coordinating fabric cut 1 rectangle 1” x 10”.

From Fabric 1, cut • the front dress, back panel, 4 triangle sides, and optional sleeves + sleeve binding • 21”x2” for each sleeve. Also cut bias binding strips 2” wide as shown. •

Refer to Fig.1. Place the square patch in fabric 2 in position as shown, and zigzag the square in place. Place the optional rectangular patch above it as shown and zigzag in place. Pin two of the triangle sides in place matching the straight side edge as shown. Right sides together. Stitch as shown. Repeat for the back dress panel with the remaining two triangles (Fig.2) Fold the back bodice as shown, 1/4” onto the wrong side of the fabric, and again 1/2”, press. Stitch to secure. Repeat for the other side, fig.3. Refer to fig.4. and mark the darts onto both lower dress panels as shown. Pin darts and stitch on wrong side of the fabric. Fig.5. Also pin darts for the front and back dress panels, and stitch in place. If putting sleeves into your dress, make the dart at the sleeve (elbow) as marked. Fig.6. Cross the bodice back panels over each other as shown in fig.7. and pin together. Pin the bodice onto the back dress panel as shown in fig.7. Right sides together. Stitch. Press seam allowance downward, and top stitch across 1/4” from the seam on the skirt side. Make a 1/2” or 1.5cm button hole on one side of the back bodice as shown. 2” from the top edge and as shown in fig.7. Add one of the lower panels as shown in fig.8. Right sides together. Darted edge onto the dress. Stitch, and top stitch as before. Add the lower panel onto the front dress panel as shown in fig.9. Right sides together, then top stitch as before. Note fig.10. Make 4 small pleats along the outer edge of the triangle as shown. Place the front and back panels together, right sides facing, matching shoulders, stitch. Fig.11. If inserting sleeves, pin them right sides together onto the dress, centered onto the shoulder seam. Stitch. If not inserting sleeves, pin side seams and stitch.

If making the dress with sleeves, pin the sleeves under the arms, and down the sides. Stitch together. Refer to fig.12. Make horizontal pleats in vertical lines as shown on the lower panels. 3 on each side as shown. Stitch in place. Pleats should be 1” each. Finish the dress by binding the neckline, armholes or sleeves, and the hemline. See fig.13. Join all bias binding strips you precut in Fabric 1 for the armholes and neckline. Use the 2” wide strips in fabric 2 for the hem. Pin the binding onto the right side of the fabric, binding right side facing. (Join all ends, trim and stitch). Stitch all binding onto the dress. Press the binding 1/4” onto the wrong side of the binding strip, and roll the binding over the seam allowance, and past the stitches. Pin down. Then stitch in place. Make a tie from the 1” wide strip you precut in fabric 1. Press the long edges inward onto wrong side 1/4”, then fold in half and press. Stitch. Finish both ends with zigzag or roll over a little hem. Pin onto the bodice back as shown in fig.14. In line with the button hole on the opposite side. Stitch in place as shown. To tie, thread one end into the button hole from the inside of the dress, and tie.
