Retro Tense Architecture Thesis Presentation Rhino Mdl + Dwg, GH Kangaroo Tested V-Ray Rendered + Animated, Illustrator + Photoshop, Tensegrity historically has operated as an engineering solution to enclose architecture (Biosphere by Fuller), or as sculpture (Needle Tower by Snelson). Architecture has an ability to meld both engineering and sculpture into building and more. Using tensegrity systems as a volumetric sub-divider at various scales enables it to accomplish basic architectural functions of floor, wall, ceiling, roof, room, furniture in a manner that will also create an architectural effect/ affect through material, light, repetition and density.

Tensegrity Work Station Thesis Mock-Up Rhino Mdl + Dwg, GH Kangaroo Tested Steel Fabrication, Wire Rope Fabrication, Fabric Cut + Sewn Mock-up that consited of a few ideas within the project and composited in a manor that was representitive of the project as well as becoming a proof of concept. This was then used to display the digital presentation. Primary Steel Fabrication took approximately two days with cables being made and install over a night. The Fabric took another day or so of playing with material.

HCR Speedway New Vision for Detroit Concept for Competition. Perspective + Erroded Axon Rhino + V-Ray Photoshop + Illustrator Approx. 4 days of Modeling. One Night to Render + Post Conceptually based on the idea of using various track typologies as a programmatic massing. Certain types of tracks lend themselves to certain types of spaces and movement based on form. Using Drag strip typology for food as finding and knowing all options as soon as possible is most ideal. The Indy track on the other hand is used for larger retail where a desire to be more casual and slower paced is fine; this is also where a Large Anchor resides 4 stories up over two floors. A Nascar bank is planted green space and below is smaller retail, at center are farmers market kiosks.

Mock Up Design Dev. Solar Decathlon, Collaboration With Leodan Castillio Rhino Mdl, Dwg + Render Wood Frame, Steel Fabrication + Assembly (Outsourced Bend Rolling) Taking approximately ten days from site set up, prepreation, fabrication, assembly to final site clean up. The mock-up was utilized to test the exterior skin structure that was developed. Result was a super strong rigid frame that was quite easy to assemble.

Sail Dwelling Promotion Renders Solar Decathlon Rhino, Maxwell, Photoshop Sail Dwelling is based on an idea of wind surfing sails as a means to provide shade for the home while being tied conceptually to a sunny California surf house. Nissan was interested in sponsorship and therefore required renderings for a proposal. This Promotion rendering was done while on a work trip in Madrid attending the Solar Decathlon Europe.

Fractured Dwelling Construction Docs 1,200 sqft. Single Family 2 bed, 2 Bath, Office, Deck + Green Roof Rhino Mdl, Dwg + Render A single family residence located in Pico Union. This home resides in a narrow lot and utilizes natural light as much as possible by breaking up the home into distinct volumes. A simple geometry enables interest while keeping exposure to a minimum. Standard building methods are employed and a mix of materials adds variety. A deck and green roof add exterior space misplaced by the house.

Section C-C

The semester started with a simple idea of taking a standard wide flange and de constructing it. It evolved to a reconstructed wide flange that would become a beam that would transition from various standard steel sections into one another and this would compliment its movement and load. Chill Out Beam was a heuristic project that used a concrete mass, doubling as an chill out space, would demonstrate visual its weight and the forces it exerts on the beam as it hangs acting as a cantilever. For many reasons nothing will be built permanently. A piece of the beam was fabricated in aluminum and tested to failure. The beam was incredibly strong and as a cantilever its webbing deformed until it fell out of the rig.

Wide Flange to Triangle Cantilever

Fabricated in aluminum. Using Digital Project to design the testing rig and generate digital testing model as well as files for production. Plasma Cut pieces were welded and tested using a winch.

The primary premise of this scheme is to use a single pice of steel that will morph into a variety of sections to cantilever a concrete mass that will act as a chill out spot for students. The Concrete is formed to create the platform, stair, guard rail and seating. Current it is approximately 183 cubic ft of concrete which equates to 27 540 lbs. The Beam transitions from various types of standard extruded steel sections using the wide flange as the initial and last state.

Pieces are twisted to form and placed in their correct location and clamped into place.

Testing Supports are cut and constructed from thicker steel to ensure it does not fail before the piece.

Oyler Wu Collaborative SCI-Arc Graduation Pavilion Model Making + Knitting Wood Framing Steel Fabrication + Welding Rope Knitting Documentation Graduation Pavilion for the 2011 graduating class. I participated in everything from model construction to the final assemble and rope knitting. My biggest contribution through out was steel fabrication. I was responsible for fabricating the most complicated components of the steel structure that required precise compound angled cuts through 1/8 steel wall tubing. I was also responsible for training other team members proper technique and safety when cutting steel and figuring out faster fabrication techniques. I also was the only other team member that was responsible for welding other then Dwayne Oyler. Throughout the construction process I was responsible from documenting through photography and video at the various stages.

A large aeroponic greenhouse steel truss super structure is primary and self contained residential blocks sit at its center.

Residences are essentially glass boxes that use continuous cabinets to define space and carry programmatic storage, plumbing and HVAC.

During design documents the buildings systems were better defined as well as the cabinet detailing and construction method.

Ramp Circulation

Retail Exterior Store Front Green Walk

This project is a master plan for future development of Union Station in downtown Los Angeles. Primary driver for the project was the idea of a bicycle infrastructure that consisted of sky walks/ bike ways that would run through the city.

Open Program

Exterior Circulation/ Open Program

Bike Path

1:15 Ramps are used to traverse program and other cicrculation, bridging between via truss structure and suspension cables. Lower level are uni directional bike paths and above is open pedestrian walk with open program spaces and space allocation for kiosks. Major Connectors have two pedestrian levels

Office Using Channels to cut through the floors allow a narrow office space fo better light and natural ventilation while also creating exterior spaces for Eating/ Smoking.

Support Structure

Flat Circulation

Offices

Union Station would be the central hub of these sky ways and was developed as a vertical street where program was staked and dispersed through out so that there was no single concentration. Residences are treated as elevated blocks that are accessed by these sky ways.

Used to traverse the site from east to west. 3 sets exist, one coming from Metro HQ, the second from East Portal and the third from the Parking Structure. is open program which can be planted allow for kiosk. Lower levels are used to navigated laterially between platorms and types of transport.

Primary Structural Support for programatic spaces as well as Ramp Circulation. Support via Suppension or Catalevers. A double walled ribben like tube carriers all load to the ground keeping the track level mostly open as well as connecting various levels and program through out. Ramps in opposing directions are 1:15 with at minimum 2 lifts at most 4 lifts. stairs run from below to top levels. Ment to create a vertical pedestrian walk.

Studio Sky City Transit 4A Studio Project Conceptual Models Presentation Section Model Hand Cut + Drawn, CNC Milled, Laser Cut + Steel Fabricated, These first three models were initial study models for different ideas about the project. One model was looking at a multiple level platform strategy. Another strictly at the various forms of transportation and their given routes. The last the idea of a few vertical structural cores and multiple hung/ cantilevered buildings. The presentation model was its self an illustration/ example of how the buildings could be supported by limited structural cores.

A critical component to stainability is doing more with less. It is important that architecture encourages greater efficiencies in living, e.g. higher population densities on a lot. Also to encourage more common open shared space resulting in a greener city-scape.

Water in Los Angeles is an expensive commodity. Three quarters of the cost of water is related to energy required to pump water from various locations to Los Angeles. It is important to retain as much rain water as possible to cut dependency on pumping. The amount of rainfall that falls on a standard lot is enough water to sustain 12 people for a year.

5570 Gallon Tank (12x) Each Person is Allocated ~15 gallons of water a day

Materials used should be easily reusable and recyclable by avoiding the use of plastics and adhesives. Minimizing hardware enables recycling and reusing materials far easier . This all results in building components having a longer succeeding lives in other buildings.
