Group Work In groups of four, students can select three dinosaurs to research. Each group member will be responsible for one part of the report. Students can collate the information to prepare a report. • There must be a title page. • It must include their names and their roles. Illustrations/drawings/photographs must be used in the report. • Each group member will receive a mark out of 20. • This will count towards a group mark out of 80.
A general description Dinosaurs: Assigned to: Research an overview of the dinosaurs the group chose. The research must include features that are used to classify dinosaurs. Include information to the time periods that the dinosaurs lived in. The report could be up to 400 words with illustrations/diagrams.
How large were they? Assigned to: How large or small were the dinosaurs? Record the correct measurements. When you have found out the statistics try to classify them in some way. Find other items that are as high as the dinosaur. Print out and glue next to the dinosaurs. One way is to create a graph with the name of the dinosaurs along the bottom and using meters along the side. Print out pictures of the dinosaurs (Google images) and glue them on the graph. Order them from smallest to largest. View them online for ideas. http://www.dinosaurlive.com/images/dino_scale.htm Write a 200 word report on your findings.

DINOSAURS UNEARTHED
What did they eat?
Behaviour and any other interesting facts Assigned to: Identify the food each dinosaur ate. Were they herbivores, carnivores or omnivores? What are herbivores? What are carnivores? What are omnivores? Locate scientific proof that supports whether each dinosaur was a herbivore etc. Sometimes scientists have fossil evidence and tooth structure which helps them to decide this. This report should also include illustrations. The written part needs to be up to 400 words.
How did dinosaurs survive? Assigned to: There were threats in the environment especially for the smaller dinosaurs. How did they manage to overcome this? Classify the information by creating a table that displays the information. Write the name of the dinosaur and indicate how it survived. For example: Did it use its tail to defend against other predatory dinosaurs? Did it use teeth to catch its prey? This report should be up to 300 words with illustrations/images/table.

PERSUASIVE WRITING SHEET TOPIC: WHY DID DINOSAURS BECOME EXTINCT? As a class read through the explanation from the following link.
http://science.nationalgeographic.com/science/prehistoric-world/ dinosaur-extinction.html DISCUSS the two reasons that are outlined. STUDENTS need to choose their preferred reason on why dinosaurs become extinct. THE following sheets can be used to plan a persuasive writing piece.

REPORT WRITING Tips for writing a report on dinosaurs The key to writing an interesting report is to read about the dinosaur that interests you.
PREPARATION: Borrow a book from the library. BOOKMARK websites that are easy to understand.
NOTETAKING: RECORD the sources each time, including from image libraries. RECORD notes as you read different information.
IMAGES: PRINT an image of the dinosaur you are researching as it will help you when writing a description. PRINT out an image of the time period as it will provide a background on what the earth looked like. PRINT out a map and list where dinosaur fossils have been found.
22
PLANNING SHEET CHECKLIST OF THE TYPES OF INFORMATION TO RECORD
WHICH time period did your dinosaur live in? Record a description of the time period such as the geography, plant and the types of animals.
WHAT does the name of your dinosaur mean? (Sometimes this will give interesting or important information about the dinosaur.)
2
1 PROVIDE a description of your dinosaur. For example: How big/small was it?, What body shape did it have?, Did it have horns, plates, crests or claws?
3 DO scientists know anything about the behaviour of the dinosaur? For example: Did it nurture its young? Did it lay eggs? Did it travel alone or in large groups? DID it have any predators?
5
HOW did the anatomy assist in its survival. For example: If the dinosaur was tiny then speed would be important in escaping from predators. WAS it a plant-eating or meateating dinosaur? HOW did it walk? Was it on two legs or four legs?
4 WHERE in the world have its fossils been found? ARE there any complete specimens? WAS it found in Australia?

RESEARCH SHEET Palaeontologists use a variety of tools. Draw a line to match the tool to the way they would use it.
Palaeontologists use th is for digging deep in the grou nd at a site.
this When a fossil is found, h object is needed to brus sand away gently.
Fossils came in all shap es and sizes and part of the re cording involves listing the size of a fossil. This measuring tool is ne eded.
This sharp tool assists k palaeontologists to brea fossils out of rocks.
