Lot 620

FURnitURE Lots 621-626: the following six lots were removed from the Villa at Breslau designed for the magnate Leo Lewin in 1916-17. The house and much of its contents were created by Oskar Kaufmann (1873-1956). Kaufmann was perhaps the leading theatrical and café architect of Berlin in the early decades of the 20th century, responsible for such major works as the Hebbeltheater, Kinotheater and the Volksbuhnetheater in the pre-First World War period. His often witty and allegorical decoration displays a confident handling of external forms and surfaces and much attention to detail. This playfulness and craftsmanship are obvious in the furniture and light fittings which follow. The set of four glazed doors are the work of Cesar Klein (1876-1954), the German Expressionist painter and designer working, like Kaufmann, in the world of theatre and cinema. Based in Berlin, by about 1912 Klein had developed an Expressionist style of his own which also shows influences of Cubism. These influences are clear in the design of the glass panels. Denounced in the “degenerate” exhibition of 1937, Klein was rehabilitated after the war.

It is the buyer’s responsibility to check the relevant exchange rate. The actual qualifying threshold is calculated by the Artist’s Resale Right Service Hub based on the European Central Bank reference rate published at 2.15pm on the day of the sale, and can be found on the DACS website. The royalty charge for pictures which achieve a hammer price of more than the UK sterling equivalent of €1,000, but less that the UK sterling equivalent of €50,000 is four per cent. On works of art that achieve a hammer price of more than the UK sterling equivalent of €50,000 a sliding scale of royalty charges applies. For a complete list of the royalty charges and threshold levels please download more information from the DACS website. The royalty charge is added to invoices, and must be paid before purchases are removed. VAT is not paid on royalty charges.
