Fleming, Sir Alexander Penicillium Notatum, A specimen of the mould which produces penicillin, mounted on paper and under glass, signed on the reverse Alexander Fleming and dated 1954, together with a thank you letter from Fleming in his own hand in blue ink on blue paper dated March 8th 1955 to the current owners parents (see footnote), and a letter from Elizabeth Montgomery believed to be Fleming’s housekeeper who lived next door to Fleming who also writes to the current owners parents and includes the Fleming Mould as noted in the letter (see footnote), diameter of mould in glass 4.8cm Provenance: The current owners parents lived opposite Alexander Fleming and had intervened when they saw burglars trying to break into Fleming’s home. In recognition of this Fleming sent Mr And Mrs Bax a letter (included here) dated March 8th 1955 (three days before he passed away at his home of a heart attack). The letter thanks the neighbours for assisting with ‘scaring the burglars’ and notes how he does not now ‘trust the safe’ and will now protect all his medals by putting them in the bank. The second letter is from Elizabeth Montgomery (a former resident of 20B - next door to Fleming 20A and believed to be his housemaid). Following Fleming’s death she then worked elsewhere and sent Mr and Mrs Bax the mould as a ‘souvenir of the Fleming family’ noting at the bottom of the letter ‘As though you didn’t know - but just in case - this said affair is a blob of the original mould of penicillin, not to be confused with gorgonzola cheese!!!’ Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin in 1928, however it was not until the 1940s that the scope of its properties really began to be recognised. £4000-£6000
