WELCOME / FÁILTE There’s been a rumour around for a couple of years that a simple, hummable tune was no longer welcome on Broadway. Well, it’s alive and well at the Playhouse this Autumn! With a nod to Tony Award-winning composer Jerry Herman, and hot on the heels of our hugely successful Summer of Playhouse on the Fringe and the Edinburgh International Festival, I am thrilled to introduce you to our fantastic, cinematically styled Autumn season. Adam Knight General Manager

Think of all your favourite blockbuster movies, add in foot stomping soundtracks and the cream of the West End and Broadway and you have yourself some real theatre magic! We kick off the season with the award-winning screen to stage West End musical Dirty Rotten Scoundrels: be sure to catch it if you can as these are the final dates on the Scottish leg of the tour. The breathtakingly romantic thriller The Bodyguard starring Alexandra Burke and everyone’s favourite gang of fairy tale misfits in Shrek The Musical arrive this September and October respectively. Taking a trip back to our Laurel & Hardy roots as Scotland’s original silver screen, we are thrilled to be hosting the major new tour of Mack and Mabel. Starring the double Olivier Award-winning Michael Ball in one of the defining performances of his career as 1920’s movie genius ‘Mack Sennett’. Direct from a sell-out summer at Chichester Festival Theatre, this sparkling musical is stuffed full of Broadway showstoppers, guaranteed to have you tapping your troubles away and making the world laugh. So don’t send roses to your loved one this Autumn, just follow Torvill & Dean’s lead and get your skates on to discover this wonderful musical on its only Scottish date. Other season highlights include the jaw-dropping, incredible talents of Dynamo (how does he do that?), five nights in the hilarious company of Kevin Bridges and if you haven’t yet planned your Christmas night out then Priscilla Queen of the Desert is the one for you: offering all the glitz, glamour and sparkle to get you in the festive party spirit. The season really is jam packed full of treats for all the family but rather than me list them all here, take a look through the brochure and come and see us soon.

HHHH ‘A SLICK AND STYLISH SHOW’

EVENING STANDARD

HHHH ‘A DELIGHT.

MICHAEL BALL IS QUITE SUPERB AS MACK AND REBECCA LaCHANCE DEEPLY AFFECTING AS MABEL’ SUNDAY EXPRESS Direct from its premiere at Chichester Festival Theatre, the dazzling Broadway musical comedy stars double Olivier Award-winning Michael Ball (Hairspray, Sweeney Todd) as Mack Sennett and introduces Rebecca LaChance (Broadway’s Beautiful: The Carole King Musical) as Mabel Normand. Based on the real-life romance between the legendary filmmaker and his rising star, it tells the story of Hollywood’s golden age, where the fun of the silent screen was dominated by the hysterical chaos of the Keystone Kops and the glamour of the Bathing Beauties. A world where heroes wore capes, girls were tied to the railway tracks and it all ended with a pie in the face. Mack & Mabel features an outstanding score by Jerry Herman (Hello, Dolly!, La Cage aux Folles) and is widely admired for its classic Broadway hits including I Won’t Send Roses, Time Heals Everything and Tap Your Troubles Away. This Evening Standard Award-winning musical comedy is both a poignant love story and a joyous celebration of the excitement, glamour and sparkling humour of the era of silent movies.

BEST MUSICAL ALL AWARDS ‘GRITTY, GRIPPING, SUPERB’ MAIL ON SUNDAY

Written by Willy Russell, the legendary Blood Brothers tells the captivating and moving tale of twins who, separated at birth, grow up on opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with fateful consequences. Few musicals have received quite such acclaim as the multi award-winning Blood Brothers. Bill Kenwright’s production surpassed 10,000 performances in London’s West End, one of only three musicals ever to achieve that milestone. It has been affectionately christened the ‘Standing Ovation Musical’, as inevitably it ‘BRINGS THE AUDIENCE CHEERING TO ITS FEET AND ROARING ITS APPROVAL’ (THE DAILY MAIL). The superb score includes Bright New Day, Marilyn Monroe and the emotionally charged hit Tell Me It’s Not True.

With over 3000 seats, Edinburgh Playhouse is the largest seated theatre in the UK and yet we remain rooted in the heart of our vibrant community. We celebrated our 85th birthday by launching our Creative Learning programme in October, when 20 participants attended our hugely successful musical theatre workshop hosted by West End leading man Oliver Tompsett. EDINBURGH PLAYHOUSE COMMUNITY CHOIR Goals: • Improved confidence • Improved self esteem • A sense of achievement • Increased creativity • Improved musicality and vocal technique AUTUMN TERM DATES Fri 17 Jul - Fri 18 Sep, 1 - 2.30pm WINTER TERM DATES Fri 16 Oct – Fri 18 Dec, 1 - 2.30pm Established in January 2015, the Edinburgh Playhouse Community Choir has grown from strength to strength with a core of over 50 members and lots of weekly drop ins! Over the past 6 months we’ve covered Disney classics, Simon & Garfunkel, musical favourites, rock anthems and Scottish ballads. For the winter term we will be offering the chance to sing as part of an exclusive Christmas event in the city centre. Plus there’s free tea and coffee included in every session! Whether you simply want a relaxing lunch break from the office or the incentive to try something new, we want to hear from you. Contact our Development Manager, sarahjanedooley@ theambassadors.com for information on how to register, fees and assisted places.
