WELCOME TO AYLESBURY WATERSIDE THEATRE’S SPRING 2018 WHAT’S ON GUIDE… Last season saw an exciting first as the venue hosted its first ever Comic Con, taking over all three floors including the Main Auditorium and Second Space. Enthusiasts turned out in force for the two day extravaganza. The WI also returned for their Annual General Meeting, although on this occasion they were joined by special guests - Stormtroopers - as the event fell on May 4th which is, of course, Star Wars Day! The theatre turned blue and green in May in support of the Neuro Foundation’s national campaign and our generous audiences helped raise £2,298.76 for Age Concern after performances of Gangsta Granny. It was the highest total collected throughout the tour. Theatre staff also took part in their fifth Midnight Walk for local charity, Florence Nightingale Hospice, embracing a neon Flashdance theme!

The venue team have been out and about visiting local events in Bucks and beyond over the last few months. From trade stands at County Shows, to supporting Thame Food Festival this Autumn as sponsors of their shuttle bus, it’s been a busy season! A summer highlight was Aylesbury’s Whizzfizzing Festival where our Tiger Who Came to Tea hosted a tea party, feeding young cubs and none other than Anita Dobson!

A huge annual event in the theatre calendar is panto! It’s a year-round marvel that lots of departments work on to ensure audiences have the most perfect festive escape. Here is an insight into the behind-the-scenes world of pantomime: “This will be my fourth year directing at the Waterside which feels like home to me. I had my first meeting back in March and, since then, have been working on developing the show, with input from Andy Collins and La Voix, who have some great ideas. We’re a good little team! If you’re joining us, get ready for plenty of energy, tons of laughter, brilliant songs and maybe, just maybe, a pot and a pan and some water!”

“Twenty five crew members work on the Panto get-in which involves unloading trucks full of set, props and costumes. We operate the lighting, sound and facilitate all the scene changes during the show. The show’s with us for three weeks, with technical rehearsals the week before that. We spend a lot of hours working on the show over Christmas. It’s just as well we’re a well-oiled machine!”

‘EXHILARATING... ONE OF THE BEST MUSICALS EVER WRITTEN.’ THE SUNDAY TIMES

Written by Willy Russell, the legendary Blood Brothers tells the captivating and moving tale of twins who, separated at birth, grow up on opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with fateful consequences. Few musicals have received quite such acclaim as the multi award-winning Blood Brothers. Bill Kenwright’s production surpassed 10,000 performances in London’s West End, one of only three musicals ever to achieve that milestone. It has been affectionately christened the ‘STANDING OVATION MUSICAL ’ as it inevitably, ‘BRINGS THE AUDIENCE CHEERING TO ITS FEET AND ROARING ITS APPROVAL.’ – DAILY MAIL

Lyn Paul returns to the iconic role she has played many times in the West End, in fact she was the show’s final Mrs Johnstone when it closed at the Phoenix Theatre in 2012. Lyn also starred in Cabaret with Will Young in 2013 and rose to fame as a member of the pop group New Seekers whose numerous number one hits include I’d Like To Teach The World To Sing which sold over 20 million copies. The superb score includes Bright New Day, Marilyn Monroe and the emotionally charged hit Tell Me It’s Not True.

‘EXHILARATING AND POIGNANT.’ THE SUNDAY TIMES ON ‘GHOST DANCES’

GHOST DANCES Christopher Bruce’s masterpiece plus other works

Christopher Bruce’s masterpiece, Ghost Dances, is possibly the most popular work in Rambert’s history. It tells stories of love and compassion, as death ochure image.indd 1 25/08/2017 11:51:36 – in the form of the iconic ‘ghost dancers’ – interrupts the lives of a series of ordinary people. Created as a response to political oppression in South America, it uses imagery from the Day of the Dead and bewitching traditional music to create a moving, intensely human work. Also in this programme from Britain’s national dance company is A Linha Curva, Rambert’s colourful, percussion-fuelled party-piece. 28 dancers, four samba drummers and a dazzling light show create a performance of infectious energy. Completing the triple bill is a dance theatre creation by rising star Ben Duke. Darkly funny and deeply moving, Goat dissects the pleasure and pain of performing. The work is inspired by the music and spirit of Nina Simone, with a selection of her best-loved songs performed live on stage by jazz singer Nia Lynn.
