Aylesbury Waterside
Theatre W H AT ’ S O N | J U LY- D E C E M B E R 2017
WELCOME TO AYLESBURY WATERSIDE THEATRE’S WHAT’S ON GUIDE… There’s much to look forward to this season with a line-up of spectacular shows, events and Creative Learning opportunities for all ages. The venue continues to be transformed into its flat floor layout for standing concerts and our first ever Comic Con – a weekend event taking over the entire theatre with all things geeky this August! For more details see page 21. Many customers have yet to see our auditorium’s flat-floor layout. Here are some interesting facts you may not know: • Aylesbury Waterside Theatre was designed by the same architect as Sadler’s Wells Theatre. • The theatre’s design was inspired by the hills and woodlands of the Chilterns. • Over 100,000 hand-placed blocks of timber create the auditorium’s asymmetrical jigsaw, featuring five types of wood.

Strictly familiar faces visited the venue as stars from the primetime BBC show came to support Joanne Clifton in Thoroughly Modern Millie. During her visit Joanne also supported Wear A Hat Day in aid of Brain Tumour Research, and we’re delighted to be welcoming her back in Flashdance this November. More Strictly Come Dancing favourites are gracing the stage this Autumn with Flavia Cacace and Vincent Simone’s world premiere of Tango Moderno ahead of Rip It Up in October with Jay McGuinness, Natalie Lowe and Louis Smith.

Charity continues to be at the heart of the theatre’s operations with local events supported together with regular post-show collections for some fantastic causes. Alongside supporting national campaigns Earth Hour and The Neuro Foundation, the theatre team are also taking part in their fifth Midnight Walk for Florence Nightingale Hospice.
‘Earth Hour in March gave us the opportunity to highlight, not only what we do as a large local business but also what our patrons can do to help the environment. Our air handling units pump air in from outside, our auditorium toilets are flushed with rainwater and a number of ongoing projects are leading to the building having better energy efficiency, including changing our foyer droplet lighting to LEDs. We all have an important role to play, both onstage and off.’ Rachel Lane – Deputy General Manager
‘We hugely value the Waterside’s support. This year they’re entering the Midnight Walk with a Flashdance-themed team and opening the venue to act as a Sue Jenkins, Florence pit-stop for all our lady Nightingale Hospice walkers. The theatre’s endorsement of what we do as a charity helps us to raise vital funds and provides us with a platform to profile our fundraising events and initiatives. Thanks also go out to the generous audience members who make amazing donations in the pantomime bucket collections. Our patients and families are truly grateful for their support.’

In 1964, a new phenomenon exploded onto dingy British streets. It was the essence of all that was cool. It was Mod. Mods stuck two fingers up at the class-ridden society and its dull redundant culture. They were working-class free spirits who rode sexy, streamlined Italian Vespas or Lambrettas. The sharpest Mod of all was known as a ‘FACE’. The Small Faces encapsulated all that is Mod, a unique blend of taste and testosterone, neat, clothes obsessed and street-wise. But these cult sophisticates shared another passion, their dedication to Rhythm ‘n’ Blues. This quintessentially British ‘Mod’ Musical celebrates the unique sound of the iconic ‘60s Mod band, The Small Faces. Featuring the music of The Small Faces, including an arsenal of brilliant hits like Whatcha Gonna Do About It, Lazy Sunday, Tin Soldier, Sha La La La Lee, Itchycoo Park and, of course, All Or Nothing.

THE DAILY MAIL
Written by Willy Russell, the legendary Blood Brothers tells the captivating and moving tale of twins who, separated at birth, grow up on opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with fateful consequences. Hailed as one of the best musicals of all time, Blood Brothers has triumphed across the globe, scooping up all major awards for Best Musical. Bill Kenwright’s production surpassed 10,000 performances in London’s West End, one of only three musicals ever to achieve that milestone. It has been affectionately christened the ‘STANDING OVATION MUSICAL’, as inevitably it ‘BRINGS THE AUDIENCE CHEERING TO ITS FEET AND ROARING ITS APPROVAL’ – The Daily Mail. The superb score includes Bright New Day, Marilyn Monroe and the emotionally charged hit Tell Me It’s Not True. Willy Russell is undeniably one of the country’s leading contemporary dramatists and his countless credits include Educating Rita and Shirley Valentine.
