FROM THE WRITERS, PRODUCERS & DIRECTORS WHO BROUGHT YOU DREAMBOATS AND PETTICOATS Save the Last Dance for Me will take you back through the ‘music and magic’ of the early 60s, a time when each passing week brought another Rock ’n’ Roll classic. This nostalgic, feel-good musical journey will transport you back to music’s golden era as we follow two teenage sisters, Jennifer and Marie, through the summer of 1963. Full of freedom and high spirits they embark on a family holiday to the coast and a traditional seaside town. The young siblings soon discover much more than just sea and sand when they meet a handsome American airman, who invites them to a dance at the nearby United States Air force base. But young love and holiday romance is never that simple and the sisters soon realise that while the world around them is still watching itself in black and white, life and love can be much more colourful. 8

THE NATIONAL THEATRE RETURNS TO AYLESBURY
CAST INCLUDES PAUL JESSON LAUREN O’NEIL ANTONY SHER DIRECTOR NICHOLAS HYTNER SET DESIGNER BOB CROWLEY Following the runaway success of One Man, Two Guvnors the National Theatre returns to Aylesbury Waterside Theatre with Travelling Light. How had a twenty-two year old pretentious layabout made a discovery that would elude every other cinematic pioneer for years to come? In a remote village in Eastern Europe, around 1900, the young Motl Mendl is entranced by the flickering silent images on his father’s cinematograph. Bankrolled by Jacob, the ebullient local timber merchant, and inspired by Anna, the girl sent to help him make moving pictures of their village, he stumbles on a revolutionary way of story-telling. Forty years on, Motl – now a famed American film director – looks back on his early life and confronts the cost of fulfilling his dreams. Following Vincent in Brixton and The Reporter, Nicholas Wright’s new play is a funny and fascinating tribute to the Eastern European immigrants who became major players in Hollywood’s golden age. The award-winning Antony Sher – whose previous work with the National Theatre includes Primo and Stanley – will play the role of Jacob.

Moscow, 1938. A dangerous place to have a sense of humour; even more so a sense of freedom. Mikhail Bulgakov, living among dissidents and stalked by secret police, has both. And then he’s offered a poisoned chalice: a commission to write a play about Stalin to celebrate his sixtieth birthday.
Two sets of twins separated at birth collide in the same city without meeting for one crazy day, as multiple mistaken identities lead to confusion on a grand scale. Consistently recognised by strangers, the visitors question their very selves as the turmoil escalates. Meanwhile, Aegeon, father to the Antipholus twins, has been captured searching for his sons and, as an illegal immigrant, is sentenced to death at sunset.
Romeo and Juliet was Kenneth MacMillan’s first full-evening ballet and from its premiere in 1965 has been one of The Royal Ballet’s signature works, popular all over the world.
One of the great, generoushearted and ingenious comedies of the English language, Oliver Goldsmith’s She Stoops to Conquer offers a celebration of chaos, courtship and the dysfunctional family.
Verdi’s opera in three acts charts the fate of his largerthan-life characters in music of immense theatrical punch and instant memorability. The score’s most celebrated highlights – the Duke’s Questa o quella and La donna e mobile, Gilda’s Caro nome, and the famous quartet - are among the best known set-pieces in all opera.
Inspired by historical fact, Collaborators embarks on a surreal journey into the fevered imagination of the writer as he loses himself in a macabre and disturbingly funny relationship. John Hodge’s blistering new play depicts a lethal game of cat and mouse through which the appalling compromises and humiliations inflicted on any artist by those with power are held up to scrutiny.
24
Shakespeare’s furiously paced comedy will be staged in a contemporary world into which walk three prohibited foreigners who see everything for the first time. Lenny Henry plays Antipholus of Syracuse.
At the beginning of the ballet MacMillan’s crowd scenes teem with life and colour. However, once Romeo and Juliet meet, everything else on stage can only be scenery for their story. Three great pas de deux: the meeting in the ballroom, the balcony scene and the morning after the wedding eloquently convey the narrative: adolescent shyness and fascination; the headlong rush of love declared, and the grief of parting. The final scene in the tomb, a pas de deux with a lifeless partner, is devastating.
Hardcastle, a man of substance, looks forward to acquainting his daughter with his old pal’s son with a view to marriage. But he’s mistaken by his prospective son-in-law Marlow for an innkeeper, his daughter for the local barmaid. While Marlow can barely speak to a woman of quality, he’s a charmer with those of a different stamp. As Hardcastle’s indignation intensifies, Miss Hardcastle’s appreciation for her misguided suitor soars. Misdemeanours multiply, love blossoms and mayhem ensues.
Exquisite period costumes and sets provide an ideal frame for Verdi’s exploration of love, emotional betrayal and the darkest revenge. Sung in Italian with surtitles.
