WELCOME TO THEATRE ROYAL BRIGHTON

In March, Team TRB took a trip to the Palace Pier as part of English Tourism Week. Transforming a double-decker bus into a celebration of Theatre Royal Brighton, we gave customers old and new the chance to sample some of The Parlour’s cake, craft their own bunny ears, take a virtual tour of the Theatre using our Inside the Magic app and chat to our lovely staff about the upcoming season. Who knows where you might spot Team TRB next?

Welcome to Theatre Royal Brighton and another fantastic season of drama, comedy and musicals in the atmospheric surroundings of our historic 210 year-old building. We are particularly looking forward to the return of the powerful stage adaptation of The Kite Runner, the divinely decadent Cabaret will be a real treat and the year ends with everyone’s favourite musical, Grease. We hope you enjoy this season as much as we know we will!

Every Tuesday RISE Up Community Choir brighten up our mornings with their rehearsals. RISE are an award winning charity providing sanctuary and support for people affected by domestic violence and abuse in Sussex and we are proud to host them in our Theatre each week. Look out for details of the choir’s Christmas concert later this year. We are pleased to have successfully undertaken the second phase of roof repairs and our 210 year-old Theatre is looking more beautiful than ever now we have restored all of the stained glass windows on the south side of the building. All of the glass has been removed, repaired and housed in new frames to stunning effect. We hope you spot their new sparkle next time you visit!

DID YOU KNOW?

1. Until the 70s there was an actors’ bar backstage called ‘The Last Gulp’ where actors could drink during the show! 2. In the 50s Hazel Dorling played piano during the incoming and interval in the orchestra pit. Hazel looked very smart in her ball gown - but also insisted on wearing wellies in case a mouse ran over her foot! 3. TRB housed a ‘thunder run’ where cannon balls were dropped into a pipe which ran around the auditorium to create the sound of thunder.

Two opposing presidential party candidates are neck and neck in an unscrupulous battle for the nomination. The only thing that separates the ex-Secretary of State and his populist opponent is an endorsement from a respected ex-President. But where does compromise end and corruption begin? And who in the end will be proven to be ‘the best man?’ One of the UK’s best loved and most respected actors, Martin Shaw rose to stardom in the late seventies in The Professionals, launching a career that has hardly seen him out of the limelight since. He is best known for starring in the multi award-winning BBC drama Judge John Deed and more recently, Inspector George Gently. On stage, his revelatory performance as Lord Goring in Peter Hall’s production of An Ideal Husband earned him an Olivier and a Tony® nomination and the coveted New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award. Other West End triumphs include the acclaimed Twelve Angry Men, Are You Lonesome Tonight? and A Man For All Seasons. He returns to the stage in a role made famous by Henry Fonda in the award-winning film adaptation of The Best Man.

From the team that brought you the critically-acclaimed and phenomenally successful Gaslight, comes this masterful and gripping thriller. Strangers On A Train is based on the world-renowned 1950 novel by Patricia Highsmith, made universally famous by the classic Alfred Hitchcock film. In the great tradition of Hitchcock, this spine-chilling tale will delight you with its dark wit whilst having you on the edge of your seat from the start. A fateful encounter takes place between two men in the dining carriage of a train crossing America. Guy is the successful businessman with a nagging jealousy, Charles is the cold, calculating chancer with a dark secret. A daring and dangerous plan develops from this casual conversation, setting in motion a chain of events that will change the two men’s lives forever. This production is guaranteed to thrill and chill as the suspense mounts.
