WELCOME TO THE EDINBURGH PLAYHOUSE WHAT’S ON GUIDE...
‘WE ALWAYS FEEL WELL LOOKED AFTER AT THE PLAYHOUSE. THE STAFF ARE EXTREMELY HELPFUL. WE’RE ALREADY LOOKING FORWARD TO BEAUTIFUL – WE’LL BE SINGING ON THE BUS ON THE WAY HOME!’
We’re delighted to join in celebrations marking the 70th anniversary of the Festivals while also raising a glass to the Playhouse on 12th August – her 88th birthday! In the world’s leading festival city, many special events this summer explore the rich culture and heritage of Scotland and where better to enjoy the Festival than at the Playhouse?
‘I LOVE GOING TO THE PLAYHOUSE, THE STAFF ARE GREAT. THE ATMOSPHERE IS ELECTRIC AND, WITH MY MEMBERSHIP, I GO AS OFTEN AS I CAN – REALLY LOOKING FORWARD TO SUNSET BOULEVARD!’
DID YOU KNOW? The ground on which the Playhouse stands has links with various forms of entertainment as far back as the 15th century. The valley of Greenside provided a natural amphitheatre for an audience to gather to enjoy plays, revels, festivals and was also well established as a ‘tilting ground’ where examples of mimic warfare would have taken place.
ALISON GALL, FORTH VALLEY SENSORY CENTRE
CATHERINE HERD, AUDIENCE MEMBER
MEMORIES: The Playhouse has long been known as a place to meet friends over a drink or bite to eat, and, in earlier years, the bars and restaurant were open from 9am each day. The Boards and the offices above have served different purposes and many may remember them as a studio theatre, bars and even a night club during the 1980s. Do you have a favourite memory of the Playhouse; photos or memorabilia? Visit our Facebook page and share your memories for a chance to be featured in the next brochure.
Annie Lumsden
In March our Customer Experience team helped Annie Lumsden with a very special request. Annie was one of Joe McElderry’s keenest travelling fans and came to see him in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat - her last chance to see him live. Annie had a rare lung condition - IPF - and needed to bring six oxygen tanks to sustain her through the show. She was so grateful to the team for helping her to enjoy her final show. Sadly, Annie recently passed away but, with her family’s permission, we thought we should still include her story in this brochure.
We are continuing to improve our customers’ theatre experience and recently the Ladies’ toilets in the Balcony level and both the Ladies’ and Gents’ toilets in The Boards have been refurbished to high standards. There are also plans over the summer for the auditorium décor to be refreshed. James Haworth, Theatre Director /EdinburghPlayhouse | |2|

CILLA - THE MUSICAL is a spectacular and heart-warming musical adaptation of the critically-acclaimed ITV mini-series based on the early life of Cilla Black, from BAFTA award winner, JEFF POPE (The Moorside, Philomena, From The Cradle To The Grave, Mrs Biggs). The story follows the extraordinary life of an ordinary teenage girl from Liverpool, Priscilla White and her rocky, yet incredible, rise to fame. It’s an introduction by a young John Lennon, to music mogul Brian Epstein, that changes Priscilla White’s life forever. By the age of just 25 she was recognised as international singing star Cilla Black and would go on to become Britain’s favourite television entertainer headlining series of Blind Date, Surprise Surprise and many more. The musical score is the ultimate soundtrack to the 60s including Cilla’s greatest hits Anyone Who Had A Heart, Alfie and Something Tells Me, alongside a backdrop of the legendary ‘Liverpool Sound’ including The Beatles’ Twist and Shout, American influences like California Dreamin’ by The Mamas and The Papas and many more. Just as Cilla was ‘discovered’ at the Cavern Club, this new musical has set out to discover unknown talent to play the role of ‘Cilla’ and honour her memory through a televised nationwide search.

Beautiful – The Carole King Musical, the Olivier and Tony Award®-winning West End and Broadway show is coming to Edinburgh as part of its first ever UK tour! ‘The audience loves Beautiful’ (Daily Mail) and critics agree! Called ‘slick and beautifully played’ (The Times), the ‘amazing story of the songwriting talents of Carole King told through laughter and tears’ (BBC Radio 2) critics are celebrating this ‘tapestry of greatest hits’ (The Guardian). Long before she was Carole King, the chart-topping music legend, she was an ordinary girl with an extraordinary talent. Beautiful tells the inspiring true story of King’s remarkable rise to stardom, from being part of a hit songwriting team with her husband Gerry Goffin, to her relationship with fellow writers and best friends Cynthia Weil and Barry Mann, to becoming one of the most successful solo acts in popular music history. Along the way, she wrote the soundtrack to a generation, including one of the best-selling albums of all time, Tapestry, and countless classics such as (You Make Me Feel) Like a Natural Woman, Take Good Care of my Baby, You’ve Got a Friend, So Far Away, It Might As Well Rain Until September, Up on the Roof, and Locomotion.

Romeo & Juliet – Shakespeare’s tale of passion and tragedy is brought to life by Prokofiev’s soaring score, set in bustling Verona with emotionally charged choreography that befits the world’s greatest love story. Cinderella – The world’s favourite rags-to-riches fairy-tale, where dreams can come true, is a magical mix of Prokofiev’s energetic score, lively choreography and colourful costumes. The Snow Maiden – This seasonal sparkler follows the Snow Maiden as she dances into the human world. Captivated by the colourful village and the people who live there, she ventures too far and is swept up by feelings of love, temptation and betrayal. CREATIVE LEARNING COMMUNITY CHOIR SUMMER CONCERT The Playhouse’s Community Choir continues to go from strength to strength, led by Gary Cameron. Gary focuses his energy and enthusiasm to bring the choir together on a weekly basis as they rehearse a range of popular songs and musical theatre numbers.
The magical, botanical, illuminated trail
We caught up with Choir Director, GARY CAMERON, to find out more about his work with the Choir and its member singers.
As a freelance musical director and composer I’ve been working with the Community Choir at the Edinburgh Playhouse since this initiative started two years ago. This unique Creative Learning project gives men and women of all ages the chance to be involved with theatre and music, in an exciting and community-focused way. It’s been fantastic to see the chorus grow to more than 40 member singers, made up of all ages – from 16 to over 70. All of our members have a real love of music and song and that really comes to life through their enthusiasm during our weekly rehearsals around the piano.
CHRISTMAS AND THE BOTANICS AD
As well as the chance to meet new people and have fun, our programme of music includes pop covers as well as show tunes and musical favourites – there really is something for everyone. We also showcase all of our work and efforts in our popular public concerts. The choir meets every Friday from 1pm to 2.30pm in The Boards. There is no requirement to read music or have any previous singing experience. For further details please visit ATGTICKETS.COM/Edinburgh
