East is East is a timeless family story, with all of the wit, laughter, rivalry, tension and drama that make up family life. This production, direct from London, stars Pauline McLynn (Father Ted, The Knight of the Burning Pestle for Shakespeare’s Globe) and Simon Nagra (Dara and Rafta Rafta for the National Theatre), as well as a host of the finest British acting talent completing the cast. This critically acclaimed production of Ayub Khan Din’s modern comedy classic promises to be unmissable. Pakistani chip shop owner George Khan - ‘Genghis’ to his kids is determined to give his children a strict Muslim upbringing against the unforgiving backdrop of 1970s Salford. Household tension reaches breaking point as their long suffering English mother, Ella, gets caught in the cross fire - her loyalties divided between her marriage and the free will of her children.

From the producers of Hairspray, Midnight Tango and West Side Story comes a hilarious, feel-good musical featuring Elvis Presley’s greatest hits. In a small town in 1950’s America, a guitar-playing, hip-swivelling stranger rides his motorbike into town. Is he The Devil In Disguise or a Hound Dog in his Blue Suede Shoes? The townsfolk are about to be All Shook Up and could be headed for Heartbreak Hotel, but for Natalie, the love-struck, tomboy mechanic, it really is Now or Never. Packed with 25 of the best-loved songs by The King himself, Love Me Tender, by the writer of the award-winning West End and Broadway smash hit Memphis, is a funny and moving tale of hope, second chances and the healing qualities of Rock ’n’ Roll.

BOOK BY BASED ON AN ORIGINAL CONCEPT BY JEFF WHITTY ROBERT LOPEZ & JEFF MARX

This production is given by permission of JOSEF WEINBERGER LTD on behalf of MUSIC THEATRE INTERNATIONAL of New York

Following five years in the West End, sell-out runs worldwide and a smash hit tour in 2014 (packed with mischief, bad behaviour and political incorrectness) Avenue Q is hitting the road again! Created by Jeff Marx and Robert Lopez (Co-creator of Book of Mormon and writer of the songs for Disney’s Frozen) Avenue Q is an irresistibly charming musical which tells the story of the loveable characters on a downtown New York street trying to make sense of life’s burning issues. Hilarious, cheeky and uproariously entertaining, with a terrific batch of songs performed by a cast of hugely talented performers and puppets, Avenue Q is the musical like no other.

BILL KENWRIGHT BY SPECIAL ARRANGEMENT WITH THE REALLY USEFUL GROUP PRESENTS

TIM RICE & ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER’S LEGENDARY MUSICAL Jesus Christ Superstar exploded onto the musical scene in 1971 - stunning audiences and changing the face of musical theatre forever. Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s rock opera tells the story of the last seven days in the life of Jesus through an extraordinary, groundbreaking score. As compelling today as it was at its inception over forty years ago, Jesus Christ Superstar has some of musical theatre’s most legendary songs from I Don’t Know How to Love Him, Everything’s Alright and Gethsemane through to, of course, Superstar. Leading performer Glenn Carter returns as Jesus, a role he has played in the West End, on Broadway and on film. Musical theatre star Tim Rogers, whose theatre credits include Carousel, Whistle Down the Wind, Jersey Boys and the title role in Jekyll & Hyde at the Union Theatre plays Judas Iscariot, while X Factor finalist Rachel Adedeji stars as Mary Magdalene direct from the UK and European tour of Thriller Live. Produced by Bill Kenwright and the creative team behind numerous blockbuster musicals, Jesus Christ Superstar tells the world’s oldest story with the superb theatricality they have brought to Evita, Joseph, Cabaret, Blood Brothers, Whistle Down the Wind, Starlight Express and many more.

It’s 1963 and the world is changing. Bobby and Laura’s first single Dreamboats and Petticoats went to the top of the charts - but they haven’t been able to repeat that success with any further records. Norman and Sue have settled down to non-marital bliss and a baby! But Ray and Donna seem blissfully happy.

BOOK BY

The advent of the Beatles and the Merseyside sound is inspirational. But will it inspire Bobby and Laura to have one more shot at stardom, Norman to ‘get off the drains’ and find that singing voice he has longed for, and Ray to realise his ambition and manage a really top pop act? All will be revealed in a follow up with the same wit and charm as Dreamboats and Petticoats. Many of the songs are from the next period in pop history.

This new production is directed by Lucy Bailey, designed by William Dudley with added material written by Simon Brett, lighting design by Oliver Fenwick, and composition and sound design by Tom Mills. The Importance of Being Earnest is known to elegantly lampoon the hypocrisies of a Victorian society and opens as two bachelors, the dependable John Worthing, J.P. and upper class playboy Algernon Moncrieff, feel compelled to create different identities in order to pursue two eligible ladies Cecily Cardew and Gwendolyn Fairfax. The hilarious misadventures which result from their subterfuge; their brushes with the redoubtable Lady Bracknell and the uptight Miss Prism result in a plot that twists and fizzles with some of the finest dialogue to be found in theatre.

‘YORK STAGE MUSICALS HAVE RAISED THE BAR - AGAIN’

The dazzling West End and Broadway hit musical Ghost, based on the Oscar winning Paramount Pictures film written by Bruce Joel Rubin and starring Patrick Swayze, Demi Moore and Whoopi Goldberg, comes to the Grand Opera House stage next February in an electrifying new production. When Sam Wheat is murdered on a New York street, he finds himself trapped between this world and the next. After many attempts at trying to communicate with girlfriend Molly he seeks the help of a phony psychic in the hope of saving her from his murderer. As time begins to run out both Sam and Molly learn the hard way to keep their friends close and their enemies even closer. Ghost features a stunning score from Grammy Award-winning legends Dave Stewart (Eurythmics) and Glen Ballard (writer of Michael Jackson’s Man In The Mirror), and also includes the unforgettable Unchained Melody. Nominated for five Olivier Awards and three Tony’s Ghost has wowed audiences the world over and now York Stage Musicals bring this timeless classic to the city centre for audiences to experience... be ready to believe.

AUDIO DESCRIPTION Audio description brings alive what is happening on stage for people with sight problems. It describes the action, scenery, facial expressions and costumes. We offer pre-performance notes and touch tours where available. These enable you to receive a description of the set or the ability to visit the stage before the performance. They also give details of scenery, props and on some occasions, an opportunity to meet the actors.

CAPTIONED PERFORMANCE Captions give deaf, deafened and hard of hearing people access to live performance. The actors’ words appear on a display unit (or units), placed in the set or next to the stage, at the same time as they are spoken or sung. Speaker names, sound effects and offstage noises are also shown.

RELAXED PERFORMANCE Relaxed performances are aimed at anyone who would benefit from a more relaxed performance environment including people with an Autistic Spectrum Condition, sensory or communication disorders, or a learning disability. The atmosphere in the auditorium will be relaxed to provide a more supportive environment - a bit like the quiet carriage on the train, but the opposite! Audience members will be free to come and go as they please throughout the performance and make noise if they want to. For more information and updates on access performances please visit the Access section at www.atgtickets.com/ york, or call 01904 678703.
