There’s no business like show business In every edition of our What’s On guide, we’ll be catching up with the biggest names in the business and some of the stars who’ll be hitting our stage over the season. This time, we chat to local lad Freddie Flintoff about his stage debut in Fat Friends, coming to the Opera House this March. Who are you playing in Fat Friends The Musical?

I’m playing Kevin. Kevin’s not the brightest, I’ll be honest with you, but he’s very lovable. People seem to like him.

What are you looking forward to most about being in this musical?

I’m looking forward to the challenge of it. I am an ex-cricketer and then to think that I’m going to be performing on stage in a musical is completely bonkers! But I do love singing and I can’t wait to be part of it. Who are you looking forward to working with?

It’s an amazing creative team. Obviously Kay Mellor wrote it and she’s going to direct as

I’ve got more than one but my favourite food is fish fingers, chips, beans, bread and butter. But not the posh fish fingers. The frozen ones from a packet. Proper ones! Fat Friends, see page 30.

Writer and critic Michael Davies caught up with the

production’s leading lady, Bronté Barbé, to talk about

playing Carole and about her own journey from television contestant in the search for Dorothy in Over the Rainbow. MD: How did you first hear that you’d got the role of Carole King in the tour of Beautiful? BB: Oh my goodness, that’s a good question. My agent called me actually, and started singing down the phone. He sang, ‘You’ve got to get up every morning’ and then said, ‘Do you want to be Carole King?’ It was bonkers. I just couldn’t believe it. MD: Were you familiar with the show before then? BB: I went to see it about four months ago for the first time. I’d been meaning to see it for ages and I’ve listened to the soundtrack a number of times because I love the music of Carole King. I was blown away by it. I absolutely loved it, but I never thought I’d even be considered as Carole. MD: What is it about the show that makes it so special? BB: It’s the music, because her songs are so iconic, but also it’s the style in which it’s produced. The writing is amazing, the

I see it more as an interpretation rather than an impression because it would be completely impossible to impersonate her. I think I bring a bit of me to it but also hopefullly, in a way, I am Carole as well. MD: Are you playing the piano? BB: I’m not actually playing piano, no. I don’t want to give it away too much. But I didn’t play at all before I started – I’ve been having lessons with our Musical Director for quite a while on the perfect way to create rhythms and shapes and stuff like that. So no, I don’t actually play, but we’re so in sync, me and the MD now, that it’s so satisfying to play, for me. I’m not really playing but it feels like I am really playing, if you know what I mean? MD: What’s it been like since you were one of the potential Dorothys in Over the Rainbow? BB: It’s bizarre because it’s seven years since Over the Rainbow and I feel like I have grown up so much since then. When I think of being in Macclesfield and doing am-dram and dreaming about doing musicals, I am chuffed with the way the last few years have panned out. When I was doing Dorothy I knew I had a

Swan Lake is the world’s most romantic ballet, a tragic tale of love and betrayal set to Tchaikovsky’s beautiful, haunting score. The enchanting and romantic story of The Sleeping Beauty inspired Tchaikovsky to write some of his most glorious music, and this fairytale ballet has captivated audiences for well over a century. Brimming with some of Russia’s best young dancers, outstanding principals, stunning soloists and a sublime corps de ballet, these stand-out performances never fail to add that magical ingredient of Russian soul.

thrilling new production of the most iconic and powerful story in American literature. Set in the trying times of the Great Depression, Of Mice And Men is a powerful portrait

This landmark play by the Nobel Prize winner, John Steinbeck, is the story of George and Lennie, two migrant ranch workers who dream of owning their own ranch.
