WELCOME
Welcome to our new season brochure, introducing our forthcoming programme of events, designed to provide entertainment for all tastes throughout Summer 2013. We’re very excited to host several productions making their first visit to the New Theatre. July sees the arrival of an exciting new production of The Pirates of Penzance, brought to us by the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company and Scottish Opera. The team behind last year’s hit Dreamboats and Petticoats return with another perfect feel-good summer musical: Save The Last Dance For Me. October sees The Mousetrap stop off in Oxford on its national tour. This is swiftly followed by the international award-winning production of West Side Story. This classic musical is filled with love, passion, and the most breathtaking choreography in musical theatre: I urge you not to miss it! We have return visits from Oxford favourites Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and The Rocky Horror Show (celebrating its 40th anniversary with an all new production), along with Oxford Operatic Society’s latest production: the Rodgers
and Hammerstein classic The Sound of Music. Our friends Welsh National Opera are also returning with an exciting Autumn season. For those with young families, English National Ballet present My First Cinderella, an adapted version of the classic fairytale perfect for anyone aged 3 and up. Grandpa in my Pocket: Teamwork! offers the perfect family outing for the August bank holiday, with a piratethemed adventure sure to delight and entertain. We’ve also got ground-breaking Irish dance from Prodijig and some of the stars from Strictly Come Dancing taking to the floor with Strictly Confidential. With return visits from comedians Reginald D Hunter, regular visitor Jimmy Carr and Jason Manford and a multitude of concerts including The Three Phantoms, Tubular Bells for Two, Simple Minds, OMD, Leona Lewis, and The Moody Blues we can guarantee that whatever weather the summer brings us, there will be a warm welcome at the New Theatre. Finally, we’re delighted to announce not one, but two Christmas seasonal offerings. Our festive family fun this year comes from Cats returning to Oxford after a 7 year absence. Looking 12 months ahead, tickets are already available for Dirty Dancing - the record breaking tour based on the classic film. To make sure you never miss a show, just supply us with your email address when you book
tickets and you’ll receive our monthly e-newsletter with details of new shows, offers and casting announcements. Don’t forget to check out our fabulous offers for ATG Theatre Card members with half price tickets on many shows, discounts at the bar and offers with our local partner businesses, a Theatre Card can really make a difference when planning a night out. Based on the life of Maria von Trapp, The Sound of Music tells the story of a high-spirited postulant, sent to serve as governess to the seven children of the widowed Captain von Trapp. Her growing rapport with the youngsters, coupled with her generosity of spirit, gradually captures the hearts of both the children and of the stern Captain. However, on returning from their honeymoon, they discover their beloved Austria has been invaded by the Nazis, who demand the Captain’s immediate service in their Navy. The whole family must quickly escape over the mountains to Switzerland or face certain capture. A young man bound by an overactive sense of duty, a soft-hearted pirate king with a hopeless band of rogues at his side, a beautiful young girl, a very modern major-general and an ineffectual bevy of policemen. Add a plot hinging on the technicalities of having a birthday on the 29th of February and we’re just about there. What could possibly go wrong? Gilbert’s high speed patter is razor sharp and Sullivan’s score features the catchy tunes for which he is so well known. The fantastic cast includes a horde of fresh, young talent as well as G&S stars Steven Page as The Pirate King and Richard Suart as the Major-General. With the orchestra of Scottish Opera, and a touring company of over 90, this is a spectacular telling of a G&S classic. Sung in English with English supertitles
