New Wimbledon
Theatre W H AT ’ S O N | J U LY- D E C E M B E R 2017
WELCOME TO NEW WIMBLEDON THEATRE AND YOUR WHAT’S ON GUIDE... My top picks for this season are classic musical Cabaret, plus brand new Son of A Preacher Man and Cilla. With musical tributes, comedy, as well as the annual pantomime, Jack and the Beanstalk, we have something for everyone. I can’t wait for our Stage Experience, which offers young creatives the chance to perform Bugsy Malone on our main stage.
‘THE LITTLE STUDIO SPACE TUCKED AWAY AROUND THE SIDE OF THE TITANIC NEW WIMBLEDON THEATRE IS FAST BECOMING ONE OF THE MOST VALUED JEWELS IN THE CROWN OF ATG’S REDISCOVERY OF FORGOTTEN OR NEGLECTED CLASSICS. BRITSHTHEATRE.COM
‘ONE DOES NOT NEED TO VISIT THE WEST END TO EXPERIENCE A BEAUTIFUL VENUE COUPLED WITH THE FINEST PERFORMANCES.’ SABRINA FANCY, WHAT’S GOOD TO DO
Now in our 107th year, New Wimbledon Theatre has seen some superb productions, hosted some of the very best performers and this season is no exception. Since the theatre opened in 1910 visiting performers have painted bricks in the first floor dressing room corridor to mark their visit (see picture below). You can see the bricks and find out more about the history of our beautiful theatre by coming along to one of our monthly Theatre Tours. This summer will also see the completion of our studio refurbishment. Renamed the Time & Leisure Studio, the studio is an intimate theatre space and plays host to our new digital cinema showcasing screenings from around the globe, including RSC Live productions.
The spotlight shines on our Creative Learning programme this season, as it continues to provide an eclectic mix of workshops and events for all ages and abilities. Here’s a quick taste of what some of our recent participants have to say… ‘The choir has offered a great opportunity to meet other people in and around Wimbledon and share our love of music. To rehearse in such a The Choir in the Piano Bar lovely space is a bonus. We laugh a lot and we sound just great when we sing together.’ New Wimbledon Theatre Choir runs on Mondays, 1pm – 2.15pm. Please be aware that places are limited and our spring and summer choir sold out very quickly.
Pre-School Music & Movement Classes has been great fun! Baby Aleena moved on from crawling to walking, dancing and playing Pre-School Music & musical instruments in Movement Class in action just ten weeks! Learning dance moves to unique music and listening to stories has been a delight and taking home a balloon animal each week is a special treat.’ Pre-School Music & Movement Classes runs on Mondays, 10.30am – 11.30am and we hope to see some new faces this term.

RSC LIVE: TITUS ANDRONICUS WEDNESDAY 9TH AUGUST 7PM
RSC LIVE: CORIOLANUS WEDNESDAY 11TH OCTOBER 7PM
Blanche McIntyre returns to direct Shakespeare’s bloodiest and most violent play as part of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Rome season. When an exhausted Titus relinquishes power, Roman society descends into a utter decay. Still relevant today, Shakespeare’s gory revenge tragedy presents us with murder as entertainment and poses questions about the nature of sexuality, family, class and society.
Coriolanus is a leader forged in war, driven by his Mother’s ambition and suffering from self-doubt and unending questions. Sope Dirisu takes on the tragic, title role in the second of the Royal Shakespeare Company’s Rome season plays. Directed by Angus Jackson, Coriolanus shows integrity versus idealism was no easier then than it is now.

CILLA - THE MUSICAL is a spectacular and heart-warming musical adaptation of the critically-acclaimed ITV mini-series based on the early life of Cilla Black, from BAFTA award winner, JEFF POPE (The Moorside, Philomena, From The Cradle To The Grave, Mrs Biggs). The story follows the extraordinary life of an ordinary teenage girl from Liverpool, Priscilla White and her rocky, yet incredible, rise to fame. It’s an introduction by a young John Lennon, to music mogul Brian Epstein, that changes Priscilla White’s life forever. By the age of just 25 she was recognised as international singing star Cilla Black and would go on to become Britain’s favourite television entertainer headlining series of Blind Date, Surprise Surprise and many more. The musical score is the ultimate soundtrack to the 60s including Cilla’s greatest hits Anyone Who Had A Heart, Alfie and Something Tells Me, alongside a backdrop of the legendary ‘Liverpool Sound’ including The Beatles’ Twist and Shout, American influences like California Dreamin’ by The Mamas and The Papas and many more. Just as Cilla was ‘discovered’ at the Cavern Club, this new musical has set out to discover unknown talent to play the role of ‘Cilla’ and honour her memory through a televised nationwide search.

‘RIA JONES STOLE THE SHOW!’ THE DAILY TELEGRAPH
Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Tony Award®-winning masterpiece Sunset Boulevard, starring Ria Jones as Norma Desmond, comes to The New Wimbledon Theatre for one week only. In her mansion on Sunset Boulevard, faded silent-screen goddess Norma Desmond lives in a fantasy world. Impoverished screen writer Joe Gillis, on the run from debt collectors, stumbles into her reclusive world and is seduced by her and her luxurious lifestyle. Joe becomes trapped in a claustrophobic world until his love for another woman leads him to try and break free, with dramatic consequences. With internationally acclaimed musical theatre star Ria Jones, who received standing ovations every night when performing the role at the London Coliseum, and its much-loved score (including Sunset Boulevard, With One Look, The Greatest Star of All and The Perfect Year) performed with full orchestra, this production promises to be a spectacular evening.
