WELCOME TO THE REGENT THEATRE, STOKE-ON-TRENT We have a world-class programme for you this season, including the brand-new production of Cilla, telling the story of one of Britain’s bestloved entertainers and featuring the ultimate soundtrack to the sixties!
DID YOU KNOW?
1. The Regent Theatre was originally built in 1929 as a cinema and was one of the first to feature ‘talkies.’ 2. The £23m refurbishment was completed in 1999 and the theatre was opened as The Regent Theatre on 21st September 1999, with Lesley Joseph starring in Annie (a role she reprised here in 2016). The theatre was officially opened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II in October of that year. 3. The chessboard floor in the foyer is the original flooring – this used to cover the whole foyer but, due to a mix-up during the refurbishment, the builders began to destroy this and what you see today is all that could be salvaged.
Many of our customers ask about the history and architecture of our beautiful theatre. Whilst we are definitely one of the most accessible theatres in the region, since our refurbishment in 1999, we are also one of the most historic.
If you’d like to learn more about The Regent Theatre, why not join us on one of our brand-new Theatre Tours? Explore the theatre with one of our knowledgeable tour guides and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee relaxing in our beautiful venue. We look forward to welcoming you soon! Speak to our box office for more information.
A TRIBUTE TO CAZZY SMALLWOOD
We would like to take the opportunity to dedicate this page to Caroline ‘Cazzy’ Smallwood, who passed away very quickly and unexpectedly over the Easter bank holiday weekend. Cazzy was part of the Regent Theatre and Victoria Hall family for over 15 years, a well-known and welcoming face to our customers and, as a valued friend and staff member we wanted to pay tribute to her. On 18th April, we lit up the Regent Theatre fly tower in red and white to pay tribute to Cazzy, who was a huge Stoke City supporter. We hope that this small gesture went some way to express how much she will be missed across both venues. Our thoughts and best wishes are with Cazzy’s family and friends at this sad and difficult time.
‘Cazzy was and will always be a ray of sunshine, she would always brighten your day with either a smile or compliment.’ ‘Cazzy was a proper character and we had lots of banter. She will be missed both in the workplace and around Newcastle-under-Lyme. Sweet dreams.’

‘A FIVE-STAR ‘WHO DUNNIT’’ THE GUILDFORD NEWS Eunice struggles to fit in. When she joins a wealthy family as their housekeeper, the very reason for her awkwardness, long hidden and deeply buried, leads inexorably to a terrible tale of cold blooded murder on Valentine’s Day. Ruth Rendell’s brilliant plot unravels a lifetime of deceit, despair and cover-ups which, when revealed, bring a shocking revelation almost as grizzly as murder itself. The star cast includes award-winning TV and stage favourite Andrew Lancel best known on TV as villainous Frank Foster in Coronation Street and DI Neil Manson in The Bill. He is joined by Sophie Ward, who played the beautiful, ill-fated love interest of Young Sherlock Holmes and Dr Helen Trent in ITV’s Heartbeat, pop-idol Mark Wynter who has featured in seven Agatha Christie Company productions, Deborah Grant, who has starred in Not Going Out and Bergerac, movie icon Shirley Anne Field who became an overnight star in The Entertainer opposite Sir Laurence Olivier, Antony Costa from chart-topping boy band Blue and Ben Nealon from ITV’s award-winning Soldier Soldier. |4|

CILLA - THE MUSICAL is a spectacular and heart-warming musical adaptation of the critically-acclaimed ITV mini-series based on the early life of Cilla Black, from BAFTA award winner, JEFF POPE (The Moorside, Philomena, From The Cradle To The Grave, Mrs Biggs). The story follows the extraordinary life of an ordinary teenage girl from Liverpool, Priscilla White and her rocky, yet incredible, rise to fame. It’s an introduction by a young John Lennon, to music mogul Brian Epstein, that changes Priscilla White’s life forever. By the age of just 25 she was recognised as international singing star Cilla Black and would go on to become Britain’s favourite television entertainer headlining series of Blind Date, Surprise Surprise and many more. The musical score is the ultimate soundtrack to the 60s including Cilla’s greatest hits Anyone Who Had A Heart, Alfie and Something Tells Me, alongside a backdrop of the legendary ‘Liverpool Sound’ including The Beatles’ Twist and Shout, American influences like California Dreamin’ by The Mamas and The Papas and many more. Just as Cilla was ‘discovered’ at the Cavern Club, this new musical has set out to discover unknown talent to play the role of ‘Cilla’ and honour her memory through a televised nationwide search.

IN A NEW ADAPTATION BY
ANTONY LAMPARD DIRECTED BY
ROY MARSDEN When Inspector Tanner is called in to investigate a ruthless murder at Mark’s Priory, the grand ancestral home of the Lebanon family, he quickly discovers that nothing is quite as it seems. The household is controlled by the family physician, the footmen behave more like guests than servants and the secretary Isla is afraid for her life. As Tanner moves closer to the heart of the mystery he uncovers a shocking and closely guarded secret. Building on the phenomenal decade long success of The Agatha Christie Company, which sold over two million tickets around the UK, comes a new thrilling chapter. Following this year’s acclaimed production of Ruth Rendell’s A Judgement in Stone, the Classic Thriller Company returns with a brand new adaptation. Widely recognised as the most popular writer of the early 20th century, Edgar Wallace’s gripping page-turners are regarded as the bedrock of the modern thriller and The Case of the Frightened Lady remains one of his most celebrated works. Adapted for film several times, this is your chance to catch this chilling, captivating and complex thriller live on stage. | 28 |
