Winner of the Evening Standard Award for Best Play

2013 richmond theatre premiere - Prior to the West End

by peter nichols directed by david Leveaux set designed by hildegard bechtler

Starring Zoë Wanamaker (Harry Potter) and Samantha Bond (Downton Abbey) Olivier Award winner Zoë Wanamaker stars in Passion Play, a provocative comedy about sex, love and infidelity, reuniting David Leveaux with Wanamaker for the first time since the theatrical phenomenon Electra hit the West End. Comfortably married for 25 years, Eleanor’s world is turned upside down when her husband begins an affair with their young friend Kate. As the lies mount up, the marriage is stripped bare, revealing illicit desires and hidden passions. A potent mix of intimacy and deception, this modern classic by Peter Nichols (Privates on Parade, A Day in the Death of Joe Egg) and winner of the Evening Standard Award for Best Play makes a much anticipated return to the West End, starring Zoë Wanamaker (Harry Potter, My Family and Arthur Miller’s All My Sons) and Samantha Bond (Downton Abbey, Outnumbered, Miss Moneypenny in James Bond) and directed by David Leveaux (Arcadia, Betrayal, The Real Thing).

Following three sell out West End seasons and rave reviews, Yes, Prime Minister is fast becoming the most successful play for a decade. The original writers of the classic BBC TV series, Antony Jay and Jonathan Lynn have reunited for this anniversary production with a new satirical take on Whitehall. Prime Minister Jim Hacker and his Cabinet Secretary Sir Humphrey Appleby are back, spinning out of control through the collapsing euro and austerity measures in a world of 24 hour news, Blackberrys and ‘sexed up’ dossiers. With the country on the brink of financial meltdown the PM is staring disaster in the face with his only apparent salvation in a morally dubious deal with the Foreign Minister of Kumranistan. Will Jim Hacker and his team of advisors be able to rescue the country from the edge? Starring Crispin Redman (Law and Order:UK), Michael Fenton-Stevens (Benidorm) and Indra Ové (Interview with The Vampire, Holby City). 10

Then a man comes along and for no reason at all – what do you think he does? - He destroys her. A play about unrequited love - a story about how we create stories and one of the greatest plays of the modern era. In The Seagull, Chekhov explores emotion, creativity and romantic conflict with the clarity of a doctor and the heart of a poet. Willie is playing at being a Spitfire, Peter is avoiding the Williams gang, and Raymond is playing at being a cowboy with John. Angela doesn’t really want to share her china doll with Audrey. And Donald is hiding out in the barn. Amidst hilarious games and complex friendships an unexpected turn of events lead these seven children headlong into sudden tragedy one wartime summer. Dennis Potter’s charming and profound play takes us to a world of dappled sunshine and long, playful afternoons to remind us that no-one is ever truly innocent. Almost twenty years after his early death, Potter speaks to our fractious, changing world with a simple but powerful story about personal responsibility. The play captures his wicked humour and his fierce intolerance of cruelty. Moving, funny and unforgettable. Northern Stage is the biggest producing theatre in the North East. Set in the early 1950’s, Relative Values is about the uproarious culture clash between the glittering world of Hollywood and the stiff upper lip of the English aristocracy.

‘Richly enjoyable and thoroughly reprehensible’ Daily Telegraph

There is consternation at Marshwood House when the young Earl announces he is to marry a Hollywood film actress, but the family is well and truly flummoxed when it comes to light that the starlet’s sister is none other than Moxie, the Earl’s mother’s maid. In an attempt to cope with this deeply embarrassing situation, Moxie is dressed up in her ladyship’s cast-offs as the family endeavours to pass her off as one of their own. Olivier Award-winner Patricia Hodge’s extensive stage and television work ranges from Dandy Dick to His Dark Materials, and from Rumpole of the Bailey to BBC One’s Miranda. Two time winner of the Best TV Comedy Actress Award, Caroline Quentin, has starred in shows such as Life Begins, Kiss Me Kate, Jonathan Creek and most recently Stephen Poliakoff’s Dancing on the Edge. From the producers of DINNERLADIES and BIRDS OF A FEATHER

ITV’s top comedy of all time, Rising Damp, comes to the Richmond stage in a brand new production from the producers of the stage versions of Victoria Wood’s dinnerladies and BBC TV’s Birds of a Feather. An unnamed northern university town is home to Rupert Rigsby, landlord of arguably the seediest, most run-down boarding house that England has to offer. His unlucky tenants include Ruth Jones, an administrator at the university; Alan, a medical student; and Phillip, who is studying town and country planning. Between them, Alan and Phillip are the focus and foil of the majority of Rigsby’s many prejudices, usually at the expense of his dignity and standing in the eyes of Miss Jones, with whom he is hopelessly and pathetically in love. 20

Following sell out seasons at the National Theatre, on Broadway and in the West End, Bill Kenwright presents the award-winning play The Pitmen Painters. Written by Lee Hall, creator of the worldwide sensation Billy Elliot, The Pitmen Painters has received huge critical acclaim and won the Evening Standard award for Best New Play. In 1934, a group of Ashington miners hired a professor to teach an art appreciation evening class. Rapidly abandoning theory in favour of practice, the pitmen began to paint. Within a few years the most avant-garde artists became their friends and their work was acquired by prestigious collections; but every day they worked, as before, down the mine. Examining the lives of a group of ordinary men who do extraordinary things, The Pitmen Painters is a humorous, deeply moving and timely look at art, class and politics. Photographs of previous cast
