ALISTAIR McGOWAN AS HENRY HIGGINS

CLASSIC BRITISH DRAMA Alistair McGowan Rula Lenska Jamie Foreman

PYGMALION Bernard Shaw

by BY BERNARD SHAW

A major revival of one of the best loved plays of the 20th century. BAFTA Award-winning Alistair McGowan leads an established company of actors in a centenary year production of Shaw’s enduring masterpiece directed by Tony Award-winning David Grindley. The aristocratic and pompous Professor Henry Higgins makes a bet with his friend Colonel Pickering that he can transform the manners and speech of cockney flower girl Eliza Doolittle and pass her off as a society lady. Packed with a host of larger than life characters, Pygmalion remains one of Shaw’s most popular plays and a classic British drama; full of his trademark wit, style and humour. Alistair has established himself as a formidable actor, receiving critical acclaim for several West End appearances, including Little Shop of Horrors for which he received an Olivier Award nomination. Rula Lenska, one of our leading stage and television actors (Calendar Girls, Coronation Street), will play Mrs Higgins, with Jamie Foreman (Oliver Twist and EastEnders) as Alfred Doolittle, and introducing Rachel Barry as Eliza Doolittle.

‘BEN KIDD’S INGENIOUS PRODUCTION MAKES THIS OFTEN CENSORED PLAY NEWLY WILD AND NEWLY CONVINCING’ BY FRANK WEDEKIND IN A NEW VERSION BY ANYA REISS DIRECTED BY BEN KIDD

THE OBSERVER

Unnerving, entertaining, funny and dark, Wedekind’s definitive play about youth caused riots when it exploded onto the stage in 1906 and has lost none of its provocative power. Brought bang up to date by Award-winning young playwright Anya Reiss and director Ben Kidd, this new version examines the exuberance, intensity and confusion of teenage life today. Spring Awakening asks important and pressing questions about how young people are shaped for their future by a generation that doesn’t understand them. Following their recent sell out productions of new plays Chimerica (winner of the Evening Standard and Critics’ Circle Best New Play award), The Effect and ENRON, and their remarkable versions of 1984, The Seagull and Romeo and Juliet, Headlong breathes fresh life into another classic text, with co-producing partners West Yorkshire Playhouse and Nuffield. Anya Reiss is winner of both the Evening Standard and Critics’ Circle Awards for Most Promising Playwright. Headlong’s London and touring 2014 season includes 1984, American Psycho The Musical and The Nether.

One of the world’s greatest playwrights and one of the greatest plays of the nineties – Things We Do For Love will undoubtedly be one of the theatrical highlights of the year, featuring international star, Natalie Imbruglia. In South West London Barbara, elegant and glacial, lives in immaculate order on the middle floor of her converted house. Downstairs, lovelorn postman and part-time plumber Gilbert has created a shrine to his landlady. Upstairs, the flat is empty, a perfect temporary bolthole for Nikki, Barbara’s old school-friend, and her fiancé Hamish. Unfortunately Hamish is everything that Barbara despises (bearded, Scottish and vegetarian) and Hamish takes an instant dislike to the ever-intolerant Barbara a hostility which hides deeper feelings.

BY JULIAN MITCHELL What would lead a man to betray his country? What would lead a boy to betray his friends? In Julian Mitchell’s award winning Another Country, which won an Olivier Award for Play of the Year and helped launch the careers of Kenneth Branagh, Daniel Day-Lewis, Rupert Everett and Colin Firth, these questions become fatally entwined. Another Country follows a company of public schoolboys through a summer term in the early 1930s where Bennett and Judd are both outsiders; one coming to terms with his sexuality, the other already a committed Marxist. However, the Establishment has traditional ways of dealing with rebels and when a scandal rocks the school, the young men must confront their beliefs and make choices which will have a momentous impact on their lives and on the future of their country.

‘A BRILLIANT NOVEL. INTENSE AND SUBTLE’ SUNDAY TIMES

‘ONE OF THE MOST INTERESTING NOVELISTS OF HER GENERATION’

GUARDIAN ON PAT BARKER

‘I am making this statement as an act of willful defiance of military authority, because I believe the war is being deliberately prolonged by those who have the power to end it’ Siegfried Sassoon July 1917 Marking the centenary of WWI, this new dramatisation of Pat Barker’s unforgettable Booker-nominated novel is adapted by Olivier award-winning playwright Nicholas Wright (His Dark Materials, Vincent in Brixton). Craiglockhart War Hospital, Scotland 1917. Poet and soldier Siegfried Sassoon has been institutionalised in an attempt to undermine his public disapproval of the war. His Army Psychiatrist, Dr William Rivers, is tasked with returning shell-shocked officers to the trenches. Yet under Sassoon’s influence, he becomes tormented by the morality of what is being done in the name of medicine, especially the treatment of working-class officer Billy Prior who has been struck dumb by the carnage he has witnessed. Reminding us that some of the most touching of friendships are borne from the most brutal of conflicts, Regeneration is a compassionate look at war and its devastating effects: a powerful, humane anthem for the youth of WWI.

VERDI RIGOLETTO Starring Vladimir Dragos as Rigoletto. A stunning traditional production recapturing the decadence of Renaissance Italy with lavish sets and opulent costumes. The opera was almost banned because it exposed the licentious behavior of the powers-that-be at court, featuring two of the most celebrated tenor arias La Donna è Mobile and Questa o Quella. VERDI LA TRAVIATA Elena Dee and Maria Tonina star in the love story that gripped Paris.

A tragic tale of searing passion and memorable music, La Traviata is Verdi’s outstanding interpretation of one of the most popular love stories of the 19th century, La Dame aux Camelias. Based on a true story, of the passionate loves and life of the consumptive courtesan, Violetta.
