WELCOME TO RICHMOND THEATRE AND YOUR WHAT’S ON GUIDE...
Having originally opened in 1899, we are very proud to be a longstanding part of the community and our volunteers play an instrumental role in connecting the theatre to our local audiences and businesses. From summer fairs to Christmas light switch-ons, our volunteers are out and about waving the flag (sometimes literally) for Richmond Theatre! Thank you to all our fantastic volunteers for their continued help and dedication.
Standing proudly at the heart of Richmond for almost 118 years, Richmond Theatre has played host to thousands of productions and has entertained visitors from all corners of the globe. Offering an array of quality live theatre, we have something for every generation and this season is no exception. We look forward to welcoming you through our doors very soon.
‘GREAT THEATRE. I’VE BEEN ATTENDING FOR YEARS – AN OLD AUTHENTIC BUILDING WITH GREAT PERFORMANCES. LAST NIGHT’S SHIRLEY VALENTINE WAS OUTSTANDING.’ A. ANTHONY
‘RICHMOND IS PRETTY MUCH MY FAVOURITE THEATRE IN LONDON. THE BEST THING ABOUT IT IS THAT IT RECEIVES TOURING PRODUCTIONS WHICH PLAY JUST A WEEK EACH AND MOVE ON SO IN A YEAR ONE CAN SEE A HUGE VARIETY OF EXCELLENT THEATRE.’ D. HILLS
Did you know: Richmond Theatre was originally steam generated to supply electricity to over 1,000 lamps. Charlie Chaplin, Gracie Fields and Laurence Olivier have all graced our stage. In 1911, an astonishing production called The Whip included five live racehorses and a train crash on stage every night!
‘For many years I have thoroughly enjoyed coming to the Theatre with my husband and have had a lot of pleasure from the great variety of Liz Savage productions. Nine years ago I joined the Richmond Volunteers, progressing to become Volunteer Administrator, which involves co-ordinating and organising volunteers’ activities throughout the year, to support the Marketing Department. I have found it fascinating to experience the theatre from ‘behind the scenes’ and love being able to contribute to this very special venue.’ Liz Savage – Volunteer Administrator
‘Twelve years ago, with small children and little time for myself, it was lovely to volunteer at Richmond Theatre, where I was welcomed with a Mary Pollard friendly smile and a cup of tea. Amongst many tasks, I organised the theatre archive, resulting in an accessible digitised record of shows extending back to the 1920s. This year I joined as Marketing and Communications Assistant and I’m thrilled to be a permanent member of the theatre which has been a huge interest of mine for so long.’ Mary Pollard – Marketing and Communications Assistant

‘A KILLER THRILLER TO KNOCK ‘EM DEAD. BY THE END I WAS JUMPING OUT OF MY SKIN AT EVERY BUMP AND EVERY OWL-HOOT.’ THE DAILY MAIL ON ORIGINAL THEATRE’S NIGHT MUST FALL
From the hand of Frederick Knott, author of Dial M For Murder and the producers behind Night Must Fall and Birdsong, comes a major revival of the classic, edge of your seat, thriller, Wait Until Dark. Set amidst the social turbulence of 60s London, the play follows the story of Suzy, a blind woman. Left alone in her apartment she becomes embroiled with a group of conmen hatching an elaborate scam. As the tension rises, Suzy is left to fend for herself but, with the phone line cut dead and the house plunged into darkness, can Suzy outwit the murderous visitors? Wait Until Dark, made into a film starring Audrey Hepburn in 1967, is often ranked as one of the top 100 scariest films of all time and this exciting new production reclaims it for the stage. When elderly widow Daisy Werthan crashes her car one day in 1948, her son hires her a chauffeur, an African-American named Hoke Colburn. Daisy and Hoke’s relationship gets off to a rocky start but, as times change against a 25-year backdrop of prejudice, inequality and civil unrest, a profound and life-altering friendship blossoms in this acclaimed comedy drama. From its landmark off-Broadway production in 1987 to the remarkable success of the 1989 film version, which was the winner of four Academy Awards including Best Picture, Driving Miss Daisy has touched the hearts of millions worldwide. From her multi award-wining performance in I, Claudius to the epic film Dune, from a Tony® nominated performance of Marlene on Broadway to Cabaret in the West End, Dame Siân Phillips has enjoyed a dazzling career spanning more than seven decades. RSC actor and legendary TV presenter, Derek Griffiths’ numerous West End credits include the original production of Beauty and the Beast in which he originated the role of Lumière and the Child Catcher in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. Ian Hislop and Nick Newman’s The Wipers Times tells the true and extraordinary story of the satirical newspaper created in the mud and mayhem of the Somme. The Wipers Times is coming to Richmond direct from the West End. In a bombed out building during the First World War in the Belgian town of Ypres (mis-pronounced Wipers by British soldiers), two officers discover a printing press and create a newspaper for the troops. Far from being a sombre journal about life in the trenches, they produced a resolutely cheerful, subversive and very funny newspaper designed to lift the spirits of the men on the front line. Defying enemy bombardment, gas attacks and the disapproval of many of the top Brass, The Wipers Times rolled off the press for two years and was an extraordinary tribute to the resilience of the human spirit in the face of overwhelming adversity.

MARTIN SHAW LEADS THE CAST IN THE TIMELY UK PREMIERE OF GORE VIDAL’S AWARDWINNING PLAY ABOUT THE RACE TO THE WHITE HOUSE. ‘A SOPHISTICATED, ELEGANT AND DAMNABLY ENTERTAINING PLAY’ THE NEW YORKER
‘THE BEST MAN MAKES YOU WISH THAT VIDAL WERE WRITING THE DIALOGUE FOR THE PRESIDENTIAL DEBATES’ NY TIMES
Two opposing presidential party candidates are neck and neck in an unscrupulous battle for the nomination. The only thing that separates the ex-Secretary of State and his populist opponent is an endorsement from a respected ex-President. But where does compromise end and corruption begin? And who in the end will be proven to be ‘the best man?’ One of the UK’s best loved and most respected actors, Martin Shaw rose to stardom in the late seventies in The Professionals, launching a career that has hardly seen him out of the limelight since. He is best known for starring in the multi award-winning BBC drama Judge John Deed and more recently, Inspector George Gently. On stage, his revelatory performance as Lord Goring in Peter Hall’s production of An Ideal Husband earned him an Olivier and a Tony® nomination and the coveted New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award. Other West End triumphs include the acclaimed Twelve Angry Men, Are You Lonesome Tonight? and A Man For All Seasons. He returns to the stage in a role made famous by Henry Fonda in the award-winning film adaptation of The Best Man.

‘SHARED EXPERIENCE IS ONE OF THE MOST DISTINCTIVE THEATRE COMPANIES IN THE LAND’ DAILY TELEGRAPH
Shakespeare’s poetic and irresistibly funny comedy of mistaken identity and love. Set in the modern world of alternative facts and fiercely jealous leaders, the young Rosalind and her friend Celia find themselves pawns in a power struggle. Together they decide to flee the city and its politics for the forest where they discover a countryside wonderland of peace and harmony. Disguised as a boy, Rosalind meets Orlando and, amidst the intoxicating atmosphere of the forest, counsels him in the art of love. One of Shakespeare’s best loved comedies, with the most witty and wisecracking heroine of them all, is transformed in a bold new production by Kate Saxon. The award-winning Shared Experience return with an evocative new production of As You Like It, giving a new lease of life to their unique and inventive storytelling.
