We’re delighted to welcome the National Theatre to Sunderland. Over the next three years we will be working in an exciting close partnership on a number of projects, including bringing productions to local schools.
Welcome to our latest What’s On Guide... Our upcoming season will certainly put a spring in your step as we bring you a variety of wonderful shows for all the family. We’re particularly excited about events that will attract new audiences to the venue. Birmingham Royal Ballet’s educational programme is designed to appeal to young and first time ballet audiences (more on page 5). I’m also looking forward to the fun that will come with David Walliams’ Awful Auntie. There will be a relaxed performance of this production which will be perfect for patrons with autism, as well as being a great opportunity for young children to experience theatre for the first time!

Birmingham Royal Ballet returns to Sunderland with three fantastic ways for everyone to enjoy the much-loved classic Coppélia. Following resounding customer feedback for our pre-show workshops during pantomime season, we’re delighted to launch Get Creative.
When eccentric toymaker Dr Coppélius leaves the doll Coppélia on his balcony, lovers Franz and Swanilda want to know who she is. Comic chaos is unleashed when Dr Coppélius tries to bring Coppélia to life and Swanilda tries to stop him. With music played live by the Royal Ballet Sinfonia.

After a stint on TV’s Casualty as Sam Strachan, actor Tom Chambers won the hearts of viewers by picking up the glitterball trophy on Strictly Come Dancing. Co-starring as Irene Roth on the new UK tour of Crazy for You is actress and TV presenter Claire Sweeney. We caught up with them both to get the lowdown on a toetapping show that features glorious Gershwin numbers such as I’ve Got Rhythm, They Can’t Take That Away From Me and Embraceable You.

What attracted you to the show? TC: Taking on Crazy for You was a no-brainer for me. It is absolutely my favourite all-time musical. It was the very first live musical I ever saw onstage and it just filled me with so much entertainment and wonder. It was amazing to see what they did with the theatre space and how the story was told. It was the only bit of theatre which truly inspired me. CS: I remember seeing Crazy for You the first time around with Ruthie Henshall. The music is just great and I absolutely loved it then and I still love it now. What makes this show so special? CS: There is lots of laughter, pathos and

wonderful performances the cast are super-talented. I’ve never done an actormusician show before and to work on a show where the band is onstage is amazing. You can see just how incredibly talented these people are as they sing, dance, act and play instruments onstage. TC: I think Crazy for You has the absolutely perfect balance of humour, story and singing. There are so many musicals that are heavy on just one element but this show has the perfect combination of everything. It is a bit like the show dance on Strictly with everything slotting into place in the right order. Is there something particular about Gershwin you love? CS: It was the Gershwin score that made me really want to play Irene - anything Gershwin is fantastic. Someone to Watch Over Me is just beautiful and I get to perform Naughty Baby, so I’m really looking forward to that one. TC: After seeing Crazy for You as a teenager, I went and bought the original score. When I was at drama school, they used to say, “Will you stop singing Gershwin?” I love Cole Porter as well but Gershwin has that sex appeal and more style, more jazz and a bit more pizazz.

EDITORIAL In just a few short years, Matilda The Musical has become a phenomenon in musical theatre. Based on the book by Roald Dahl and first staged by the Royal Shakespeare Company in its temporary theatre the Courtyard in 2010, Matilda transferred to London’s Cambridge Theatre the following year and has picked up countless awards since then.
parents and teachers always telling you what to do. He, however, could recall those feelings with visceral accuracy. This was never more apparent than when describing his schooldays. He remembered what it was like to be bullied at boarding school, to be an outsider. He also believed that most children could find their way out of adversity if they used their imagination.
It opened on Broadway in 2013, followed two years later by touring productions in North America and Australia. With book by playwright Dennis Kelly and music and lyrics by Tim Minchin, the show is now embarking on its first tour across the UK and Ireland.
Strangely, as a boy, he was often left to his own devices. His father died when he was three and though he described his mother as ‘the primary influence’ on his own life, many of his boyhood adventures happened while her back was turned. While he was a strong family man, he knew that children were natural survivors. Many of his child characters are orphans and semi-orphans or, even worse, have parents like Mr and Mrs Wormwood.

‘Roald Dahl had many talents. He was an aviator, a spy and an antiques dealer - as well as the author of adult short stories. But it was not until 1958, when he was in his early 40s, that he started writing his first children’s book, James and the Giant Peach.

A master of the elegant sentence, Dahl always possessed a mordant wit and a vivid, subversive imagination. He also had a rare gift that many adults found unsettling: he was able to see the world through a child’s eyes. Roald told me once that within 10 minutes of settling down in his little writing hut at the bottom of the garden, he could go back to being 6, 7 and 8 again. In old age, he often proudly described himself as ‘an infantile geriatric’. Roald thought most adults had forgotten what it was like to be tiny, with

As a writer, Roald was a perfectionist and often went through many drafts of his books. Matilda was no exception. He started writing it when he was 70 and the first draft took him nearly a year to complete. But it was not right. Matilda, for example, was an unattractive character who was eventually killed. ‘I had awful trouble,’ Roald later admitted. ‘The main character, the little girl, kept changing.’ So he went back to the drawing board and rewrote it. When the final version was published, it was an immediate success. Roald died two years later, in 1990, with unfinished stories still left in his writing hut. We’d like to dedicate this section to Peter Wigley, an original member of our Community Chorus who sadly passed away before Christmas. Peter loved singing, and although feeling unwell, performed at the Sunderland Christmas Light Switch On, not missing a note! Our Community Chorus sang ‘I am a River’ at Peter’s funeral and everyone at the theatre pass on their sympathies to his family. A donation has been made in Peter’s memory to Sunderland Minster, where Peter was a key member of the congregation for many years.

A family ticket is for 4 people with a maximum of two adults. ATG Theatre Card offers are for a maximum of 4 tickets per Card on selected seats, prices and performances.
