Welcome to the Spring 2015 Schools Newsletter! Dedicated to igniting imaginations and inspiring innovative ways of maximising your student’s learning, our Creative Learning department provides educational and arts activities, events and projects, inspired by and often in conjunction with the productions on our stage, with the aim to provide schools with a variety of ways of engaging with professional theatre. From pre-school to university, we offer a diverse range of resources, including workshops, education packs, talks, tours and more, all to support your learning needs.

Winner of seven 2013 Olivier Awards, this highly acclaimed National Theatre production, brings its first ever nationwide tour to Sunderland for a limited 8 performances. Based on the award-winning novel by Mark Haddon, adapted by Simon Stephens and directed by Marianne Elliott, The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time is a thrilling new stage play from the National Theatre. A practical workshop using the BBC online Curious Incident resources, which give first hand insight into the National Theatre teams’ creative process. Particularly suited to KS3/KS4 English students.

Fly through the air, get lost at Swindon station and uncover the everyday moments in Christopher’s world. A Frantic practitioner will visit your school or venue to deliver a minimum 2 hour or maximum 4 hour workshop.

A typical workshop will include: • • • •

Design Challenge

National Theatre wants to connect with young people who are interested in all aspects of theatre, from those who want to perform and equally those who are interested in the many other roles needed to bring a stage production to life. In partnership with Creative & Cultural Skills, National Theatre Learning and the design team from this acclaimed production are setting an exciting new Design Challenge for students.

A timeless story of good, evil and the all conquering power of love, Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake is without doubt the most famous of all classical ballets. With its exquisite ensembles, lyrical pas de deux and bravura solos, set to one of the world’s most achingly beautiful scores, it’s essential you secure your seats early!

Undoubtedly one of the biggest new musical openings to grace the West End and seen by over half a million people, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels has been acclaimed by critics and audiences alike. Based on the classic comedy film starring Sir Michael Caine and Steve Martin, you’ll be transported to the French Riviera and its decadent underworld, as two seasoned swindlers attempt to hoodwink a millionaire heiress. As the pair compete in the true art of the con, they discover there is only room for one of them.

An exciting opportunity for KS2 pupils - Birmingham Royal Ballet will come to your school and deliver a day of creative dance workshops looking at the themes, steps and gestures of Swan Lake, to gain an insight into this famous ballet and amazing company. Students will take part in a participatory workshop focusing on the concepts of persuasion and deception, applied to heightening believability in performance.

The internationally acclaimed stage sensation, Jersey Boys returns to Sunderland by popular demand! This smash hit musical has won 55 major awards worldwide, including the Olivier Award for Best New Musical and continues to play at the Piccadilly Theatre, London. Jersey Boys tells the true life story of four boys from the wrong side of the tracks who wrote their own songs, invented their own unique sound, and sold 175 million records worldwide. Featuring hit after legendary hit including Beggin’, Can’t Take My Eyes Off You, Oh What A Night, Sherry, Walk Like A Man, Bye Bye Baby, Big Girls Don’t Cry and many more, Jersey Boys is a story full of heart, humour and ‘sheer musical razzmatazz’ (The Sunday Express) you simply will never forget. Pantomime workshops are fun, engaging and perfectly complement a visit to the show and classroom learning. Lead by our in-house Creative Learning practitioners, workshops are priced at £160 for groups of up to 25 students and include a FREE Access All Areas tour, followed by refreshments. Education Resource Packs Education resource packs support teaching and learning in the classroom and are designed to complement your visit to the theatre, in line with the National Curriculum. Resources are available for most productions, contact us for full details.

Access All Areas Find out more about your favourite theatre with a backstage tour! Learn about the history of our beautiful Edwardian theatre, discover how it works and see the auditorium as the stars do...from the stage! Tours are available to school groups of up to 46 pupils and are priced at £3 per person.

Empire Connect Empire Connect is a charitable scheme set up by the Sunderland Empire Creative Learning department and supported by the Theatre Trust Board, to help subsidise the cost of school and community group visits to the theatre. Arts Award supports children and young people who want to develop their engagement with the arts, build creative and leadership skills, and to achieve a national qualification. Arts Award can also help schools gain their Arts Mark. Cultural venues and organisations in Sunderland will be delivering a range of Arts Award activities and offers over the coming months, if you would like to be involved or wish to find out more about the exciting opportunities available at the Sunderland Empire, contact the Creative Learning team.

Employability Package Everyone goes through an audition at some point in their life. Performers audition all the time; however a regular job interview can also be an audition, an opportunity for someone to show off their knowledge and skills. Develop confidence, communication skills and learn how to stand out in an interview with our employability workshops and discover how to improve your audition (whatever the role) and maximise your employability in a safe, engaging and fun environment. Ideal for students applying to University and performing arts schools. Workshops can be tailored to meet the needs of NEETS and alternative education groups. Work Experience We believe that local talent and enthusiasm for the many roles within the Theatre Industry should be nurtured. We offer a comprehensive work experience placement scheme for GCSE level students, plus Back Stage (ages 18+) and intensive placements for HE/FE students.
