Find out more about your favourite theatre with a backstage tour! Learn about the history of our beautiful Edwardian theatre, discover how it works and see the auditorium as the stars do...from the stage!
Explore the creative techniques used to plan campaigns and promote the theatre productions that come to the Sunderland Empire. Spend a morning or afternoon session with the Creative Learning team and enjoy an informative tour detailing how the business side of our receiving theatre works, then present ideas back in a fun Dragons Den style workshop, which will provide students with outcomes in creative thinking, problem solving, confidence and communication! Suitable for all ages, popular with Marketing, Business and Travel & Tourism groups at GCSE & BTEC level.
EMPLOYABILITY PACKAGE Everyone goes through an audition at some point in their life. Performers audition all the time; however a regular job interview can also be an audition, an opportunity for someone to show off their knowledge and skills. Develop confidence, communication skills and learn how to stand out in an interview with our employability workshops and discover how to improve your audition (whatever the role) and maximise your employability in a safe, engaging and fun environment.
Sunderland Empire deliver and support Arts Award at Discover, Explore, Bronze and Silver levels, which can be tailored to young people’s interests. Contact us for details.
Tours are available to school groups of up to 46 pupils and are priced at £3 per person or free to schools taking part in Sunderland Empire led workshops.
EMPIRE CONNECT Empire Connect is a charitable scheme set up by the Sunderland Empire Creative Learning department and supported by the Theatre Trust Board, to help subsidise the cost of school and community group visits to the theatre. Funding is available towards travel to the venue and creative learning activities and is offered via a strict application criteria (subject to availability and cannot be guaranteed). DISCOVER HISTORY Fun and engaging drama workshops themed around Greeks, Egyptians, Mayans or Romans. Suitable for primary school groups and can be tailored to achieve curriculum links and Arts Award Discover and Explore outcomes.

Our panto workshops are fun, engaging and certainly won’t put you to sleep! Our History of Panto workshop takes you through the steps to create a hilarious panto scene, whilst learning about the roots of pantomime, whilst our confidence building workshop is a great way for groups to interact, have fun and get into the panto spirit.

BEYOND THE BAND PIT

Conjured from Prospero’s magical isle, this spellbinding new work re-tells the powerful story of a man determined to right past wrongs – by all means possible. An original new ballet celebrating Shakespeare’s 400 year legacy. THE TEMPEST BALLET WORKSHOPS w/c 17 Oct A Birmingham Royal Ballet dance artist will come into your school, accompanied by a live pianist, and deliver a fun, creative, imaginative workshop based on David Bintley’s new production of The Tempest. Hailed by the New York Times as ‘INSPIRATIONAL’, Wonderland is an enchanting musical adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, with a huge heart, a medley of magic and a whole lot of wonder.
CHICAGO A musical theatre workshop, in which students will learn Fosse style choreography. Suitable for beginner and intermediate dance students (recommended age 12+).
TV and West End star Wendi Peters, much loved for her acclaimed portrayal of Cilla Battersby-Brown in Coronation Street, will headline the UK tour of Wonderland as Queen of Hearts alongside musical theatre favourite Dave Willetts, who rose to fame for playing the title role in Phantom of the Opera, as White Rabbit.
WONDERLAND Inspired by the quirky creativity of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, students will study comic absurdity through weird and wacky games and improvisation exercises, whilst unlocking their creative and lateral thinking potential.
