Arts Award is a unique learning programme for anyone aged up to 25, in which participants explore a range of creative and cultural experiences, inspiring them to connect with and take part in the wider arts world.

Arts Award offers a rich learning experience for students and supports a school’s journey towards Arts Mark, and meeting the Progress 8 and STEAM school agenda.

BEHIND THE BUSINESS

Find out more about your favourite theatre with a backstage tour! Learn about the history of our beautiful Edwardian theatre, discover how it works and see the auditorium as the stars do...from the stage!

Explore the creative techniques used to plan campaigns and promote the theatre productions that come to the Sunderland Empire. Spend a morning or afternoon session with the Creative Learning team and enjoy an informative tour detailing how the business side of our receiving theatre works, then present ideas back in a fun Dragons Den style workshop, which will provide students with outcomes in creative thinking, problem solving, confidence and communication! Suitable for all ages, popular with Marketing, Business and Travel & Tourism groups at GCSE & BTEC level.

EMPLOYABILITY PACKAGE Everyone goes through an audition at some point in their life. Performers audition all the time; however a regular job interview can also be an audition, an opportunity for someone to show off their knowledge and skills. Develop confidence, communication skills and learn how to stand out in an interview with our employability workshops and discover how to improve your audition (whatever the role) and maximise your employability in a safe, engaging and fun environment.

Sunderland Empire deliver and support Arts Award at Discover, Explore, Bronze and Silver levels, which can be tailored to young people’s interests. Contact us for details.

Tours are available to school groups of up to 46 pupils and are priced at £3 per person or free to schools taking part in Sunderland Empire led workshops.

EMPIRE CONNECT Empire Connect is a charitable scheme set up by the Sunderland Empire Creative Learning department and supported by the Theatre Trust Board, to help subsidise the cost of school and community group visits to the theatre. Funding is available towards travel to the venue and creative learning activities and is offered via a strict application criteria (subject to availability and cannot be guaranteed). Also ideal for students applying to University and performing arts schools. Workshops can be tailored to meet the needs of NEETS and alternative education groups.

DISCOVER HISTORY Fun and engaging drama workshops themed around Greeks, Egyptians, Mayans or Romans. Suitable for primary school groups and can be tailored to achieve curriculum links and Arts Award Discover and Explore outcomes.

WORKSHOP FEES AND BOOKING INFORMATION Sunderland Empire led workshops are priced at £160 +VAT for groups of up to 25 students and include a free venue tour, followed by refreshments. For groups of 25+ or for specialist workshops please contact us for further information. Show inspired workshops are delivered by the Sunderland Empire Creative Learning department and are not affiliated with the visiting productions. All workshops are subject to availability.

Participants take on challenges through taking part in arts activities, experiencing arts events, and being inspired by artists. We work with schools, colleges and universities across the North East, educating and inspiring young people in theatre and helping teachers to bring arts into the classroom. UK Productions, the producers behind Peter Pan, Cinderella, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs and Aladdin return to Sunderland this Christmas with Sleeping Beauty, with a spell-binding cast! Star of stage and screen Vicky Entwistle (Coronation Street, Les Misérables) stars as the evil Carabosse, alongside ‘Steps’ star Faye Tozer as the Good Fairy and children’s TV favourite Andrew Agnew (CBeebies, Balamory) in the role of Silly Billy. Joining them is Amy-Leigh Hickman as Princess Briar Rose, (Tracy Beaker, The Dumping Ground, EastEnders) and special guest star and legend of radio, screen and stage, Bobby Crush (Opportunity Knocks, Benidorm) as Nurse Kelly. Our panto workshops are fun, engaging and certainly won’t put you to sleep! Our History of Panto workshop takes you through the steps to create a hilarious panto scene, whilst learning about the roots of pantomime, whilst our confidence building workshop is a great way for groups to interact, have fun and get into the panto spirit.

The Sunderland Empire Creative Learning team deliver a diverse range of participatory learning and arts activities, inspired by the productions on our stage, with the aim of providing students of all ages with a variety of ways of engaging in the arts. From pre-school to college, we will work with you to support your learning needs. Here are just a few of the workshops we have coming up:

BEYOND THE BAND PIT

LEA SCHOOLS, ACADEMIES & COLLEGES 10+: £7, plus 1 teacher free with every 10 students (Fri mat only, price bands B & C). A world premiere from David Bintley. Conjured from Prospero’s magical isle, this spellbinding new work re-tells the powerful story of a man determined to right past wrongs – by all means possible. An original new ballet celebrating Shakespeare’s 400 year legacy. THE TEMPEST BALLET WORKSHOPS w/c 17 Oct A Birmingham Royal Ballet dance artist will come into your school, accompanied by a live pianist, and deliver a fun, creative, imaginative workshop based on David Bintley’s new production of The Tempest. Workshops last 75 minutes and are available to school groups of up to 30 students per workshop. For more information contact rebeccabrookes@brb.org.uk

Offers young people with an interest in music, the rare opportunity to learn through exclusive behind the scenes access and unique workshops with professional musicians and artistes. Available to students aged 14+, participants will gain a Bronze level Arts Award! Closing date for applications is 16 Sept – call for details.

Hailed by the New York Times as ‘INSPIRATIONAL’, Wonderland is an enchanting musical adaptation of Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, with a huge heart, a medley of magic and a whole lot of wonder.

CHICAGO A musical theatre workshop, in which students will learn Fosse style choreography. Suitable for beginner and intermediate dance students (recommended age 12+).

TV and West End star Wendi Peters, much loved for her acclaimed portrayal of Cilla Battersby-Brown in Coronation Street, will headline the UK tour of Wonderland as Queen of Hearts alongside musical theatre favourite Dave Willetts, who rose to fame for playing the title role in Phantom of the Opera, as White Rabbit.

WONDERLAND Inspired by the quirky creativity of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, students will study comic absurdity through weird and wacky games and improvisation exercises, whilst unlocking their creative and lateral thinking potential.

The international award winning Broadway and West End musical, Chicago, comes to Sunderland starring John Partridge, Hayley Tamaddon and Mica Paris. Based on events in the roaring 1920s, nightclub singer Roxie Hart shoots her lover and along with cell block rival, double-murderess Velma Kelly, fights to keep from death row with the help of smooth talking lawyer, Billy Flynn. RECOMMENDED FOR AGES 12+

Telling the story of Eva Peron, wife of former Argentine dictator Juan Peron, Evita follows Eva’s journey from humble beginnings through to extraordinary wealth, power and iconic status which ultimately lead her to be heralded as the ‘spiritual leader of the nation’ by the Argentine people. With more than 20 major awards to its credit, Evita features some of the most iconic songs in musical theatre, including Don’t Cry For Me Argentina, You Must Love Me and Another Suitcase in Another Hall.

Our Evita inspired workshop provides students with the opportunity to experience the true energy and creative expression at the heart of musical theatre. The workshop can be adjusted to meet the needs of beginners to intermediates.

From the acclaimed producers of Horrible Histories comes the world premiere of this amazing story by David Walliams, the UK’s best-selling author for children. It’s Friday night and Ben knows that means only one thing – staying with Granny! There will be cabbage soup, cabbage pie and cabbage cake and Ben knows one thing for sure – it’s going to be sooooooooo boring! But what Ben doesn’t know is that Granny has a secret – and Friday nights are about to get more exciting than he could ever imagine, as he embarks on the adventure of a lifetime with his very own Gangsta Granny!

GANGSTA GRANNY Students will learn through a series of drama based storytelling exercises, working together to explore narrative and interpret text, as a basis to create their own inspired Gangsta Granny scenes, whilst studying basic performance techniques.
