TRANSFORMING THEATRE ROYAL GLASGOW FOR GENERATIONS TO COME
THE WOMAN 5 IN BLACK Mon 26 November Sat 1 December
Over the next 18 months, you’ll see some changes at Theatre Royal Glasgow which we hope will make your visits to the theatre even more enjoyable. Work is already underway to improve the theatre’s public spaces by building a dramatic new entrance that will house fantastic new facilities and greatly improve access to all levels. With new lifts, spacious new foyers, better bars, more toilets, and improved air-flow and sightlines in the auditorium, we’re bringing the theatre firmly into the 21st century. To make way for the new building, the existing Café Royal ‘wing’ will be demolished in November 2012. We’ve tried to minimise the impact on our audiences, but there will be some temporary changes to how you use the theatre during the construction period. The work will be complete in time for the Commonwealth Games in 2014, and the theatre will be open as usual except for a short period from February- April 2014 to enable the final ‘joining up’ of the new extension with the current theatre. Look out for the information leaflets in the theatre and keep an eye on the Scottish Opera website at scottishopera.org.uk and atgtickets.com/glasgow for regular updates.

Everybody in the theatre can hear you scream! Unanimously acclaimed by the critics, The Woman in Black combines the power and intensity of live theatre with a cinematic quality inspired by the world of film noir. The formula delivers an evening of unremitting drama, transporting the audience into a terrifying and ghostly world. A lawyer engages a sceptical young actor to help him tell his terrifying story and exorcise the fear that grips his soul. It all begins innocently enough, but as they reach further into his darkest memories the borders between make believe and reality begin to blur and the flesh begins to creep... Now celebrating its 23rd year in the West End, over 7 million people have lived to tell the tale of one of the most chilling and successful theatre events ever staged. A ROYAL CONSERVATOIRE OF SCOTLAND AND SCOTTISH OPERA CO-PRODUCTION
The ultimate dance festival in Scotland, Go Dance 13, returns with the best of community dance from across the county. Fast becoming a highlight of the dance year, this highly successful week-long celebration will wow audiences with its energetic and inspiring programme of new work. CONDUCTOR TIMOTHY DEAN DIRECTOR OLIVIA FUCHS DESIGNER NIKI TURNER ORIGINAL LIGHTING BRUNO POET Sung in English with English supertitles
Now in its eighth successful year, the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland’s ambitious collaboration with Scottish Opera celebrates the 100th anniversary of Benjamin Britten’s birth with a revival of Olivia Fuchs’ 2005 production for the Royal Opera House - A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Adapted from the Shakespeare play in collaboration with Peter Pears, Britten’s version is centred on the ethereal world of the fairies rather than the human action at the heart of the original. His extraordinary music brings to life the magic of Shakespeare’s characters – from the romantic lovers to meddlesome Puck and mighty Oberon, unusually written for countertenor – and even the sighing, creaking, and rustling of the forest itself. Singers from the Conservatoire’s opera programme perform with players from The Orchestra of Scottish Opera and this year Scottish Opera Emerging Artists Ronan Busfield and Andrew McTaggart also join the cast. Scottish Opera’s senior specialist artisans and technicians work with the Conservatoire’s costume makers, set builders and lighting and stage technicians throughout the process of staging this exciting production. 8

2012/13 THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY SEASON
Werther Massenet New production Sung in French with English supertitles
Pia Furtado directs a new production of Werther in which the dark psychology of this compelling drama is ever present. The theatrical staging accentuates the heightened emotions on stage, and brings to life a story that is a timeless testament to the destructive power of obsessive love. Escaping the city to concentrate on his painting, Werther finds himself in a rural idyll that offers all the inspiration he could need, including the perfect muse in Charlotte. But she is promised to another, a man who seems to be everything Werther is not. As Werther’s infatuation grows, he is driven to ask himself the ultimate question: what is life without her? Touching, emotional and heartbreakingly sad, this tragic tale of forbidden love features some of Massenet’s finest writing, capturing the quirks and foibles of each of the characters perfectly – from Charlotte’s tortured conflict to Werther’s unstable passion and increasing hysteria. Francesco Corti conducts. Fri 15 Feb 7.15pm Sun 17 Feb 4pm Wed 20 Feb 7.15pm Sat 23 Feb 7.15pm

The Flying Dutchman
The Pirates of Penzance
Wagner
Gilbert and Sullivan
New production
New production
Sung in German with English supertitles
Celebrating the 200th anniversary of Wagner’s birth, this new production also marks the Company’s return to Wagner’s work for the first time since 2003’s Ring Cycle. Director Harry Fehr (The Secret Marriage 2009, Orlando 2011) returns to stage a powerful production that is full of character and thick with brooding tension. Senta daydreams obsessively about the legendary Flying Dutchman, a tormented soul cursed to roam the seas until he finds a woman who will love him until death. Meanwhile, out in a violent storm, Senta’s father meets a charismatic stranger and invites him home, little knowing that his daughter’s fixation is about to become unsettlingly real. Wagner’s epic score takes his characters from one overpowering emotion to the next. Full-blooded choruses, sweet, mellifluous melodies and an orchestral line driven by the furious rage and swell of the sea combine in a hugely atmospheric music-drama. Francesco Corti conducts. Supported by The Alexander Gibson Circle and Peter Moores Foundation
Thu 4 Apr 7.15pm Sat 6 Apr 7.15pm Tue 9 Apr 7.15pm
Sung in English with English supertitles A Co-production with D’Oyly Carte Opera Company
Gilbert and Sullivan as it’s meant to be – pure, uncomplicated fun. Produced in partnership with D’Oyly Carte Opera Company this vibrant all singing, all dancing show is directed by Martin Lloyd Evans. A young man bound by an overactive sense of duty, a soft-hearted pirate king with a hopeless band of rogues at his side, a beautiful young girl, a very modern major-general and a bevy of ineffectual policemen…add a plot hinging on the technicalities of having a birthday on the 29th of February and we’re just about there. What could possibly go wrong? Exquisitely observed and wonderfully funny, Gilbert’s high speed patter is razor sharp and Sullivan’s score sees him at the top of his game – mixing an operatic style to rival the great Italians of his day with the catchy, witty melodies for which he is so well known. G&S expert and D’Oyly Carte Music Director John Owen Edwards conducts.

Featuring striking video imagery by celebrated artist Mat Collishaw and love poems sung on stage by a soprano, Labyrinth of Love is a humorous and heartbreaking journey through the joy of pain and love.
