DORA THE EXPLORER Sat 17 - Mon 19 Aug

We’re making some changes at Theatre Royal Glasgow which we hope will make your visits to the theatre even more enjoyable. Work is well underway to improve the theatre’s public spaces by building a dramatic new entrance that will house fantastic facilities and greatly improve access to all levels. With new lifts, spacious foyers, better bars and more toilets, we’re bringing the theatre firmly into the 21st-century.

DUNSINANE 5 Tue 10 - Sat 14 Sep SCOTTISH BALLET 6 THE RITE OF SPRING & ELITE SYNCOPATIONS Thu 26 - Sat 28 Sep

During the Summer of 2013, we’ll be changing the seating layout in the Stalls and Dress Circle to improve sightlines in the auditorium. The Café Royal ‘wing’ of the theatre was demolished in January and, as the building work progresses, the distinctive curved shape and columns of the new building are already apparent. The work will be complete in time for the Commonwealth Games in 2014, and the theatre will be open as usual except for a short period from February - April 2014 to enable the final ‘joining up’ of the new extension with the current theatre.

GENÉE 7 INTERNATIONAL BALLET COMPETITION Sun 29 Sep THE BUTTERFLY LION 8 Mon 28 Oct - Sat 2 Nov

Look out for the information leaflets in the theatre and keep an eye on the Scottish Opera website at scottishopera.org.uk and atgtickets.com/glasgow for regular updates.

Attempting to restore peace and put in place a new ruler, Siward, the commanding officer, is beset by a brutal guerrilla uprising and simmering discontent amongst his own inexperienced troops. Struggling to grasp the alien customs and politics of this harsh country, he finds himself drawn towards Macbeth’s powerful widow in search of someone to share his burden of responsibility. Increasingly isolated from his own men and Scottish allies alike, his efforts to restore order appear futile as the situation spins out of control.

2013/14 SEASON PERFORMANCES FULL OF CHARACTER

Don Giovanni

Don Pasquale

Madama Butterfly

New production

New production

Revival of the 2000 production

Sung in Italian with English supertitles

Sung in Italian with English supertitles

Sung in Italian with English supertitles

17th-century Venice – a city of darkness and shadows, where danger lurks in every alleyway and corruption is rife. In the centre of it all, a man in his element: Don Giovanni.

Don Pasquale, a reclusive old man with a penchant for cats, runs a crumbling pensione with a chain smoking chambermaid and a greasy cook for company.

Classic, timeless and stylish, Sir David McVicar’s Madama Butterfly has been a firm favourite since it was first staged in 2000.

Determined to keep his wealth to himself, Pasquale searches for a wife. But when he finds one, being married isn’t quite as straightforward as he expected…

Forgoing sentimentality to create a rich cast of characters with unflinchingly human characteristics, his production lays bare a hugely atmospheric, poignant story that still has the power to affect, over a century after it was first performed.

Mozart

Seductive, audacious, he lives life from one opportunity to the next. But will he eventually take things too far? Director Sir Thomas Allen and designer Simon Higlett (The Magic Flute 2012) bring their hallmark theatricality to Mozart’s extraordinary score. Dark, vivid, bursting with life, Don Giovanni is full-blooded opera at its best, combining exquisite music, powerful orchestration, intense drama and lightly crafted comedy. Jacques Imbrailo, hailed by The Times as ‘the hottest young baritone on the block’ is Don Giovanni and beloved Scottish soprano Lisa Milne is Donna Elvira. Rising Italian star Speranza Scappucci conducts. Supported by The Scottish Opera Syndicate and Scottish Opera’s ‘Play a Supporting Role’ Appeal

Donizetti

Director Renaud Doucet and designer André Barbe (Manon 2009) bring Donizetti’s quick-witted, comic masterpiece to life with typically colourful and quirky style. Set in Rome at the cusp of the Swinging Sixties, the eccentric characters are given life in a world that is the perfect setting for a titanic clash of the generations. Bruno Praticò brings Italian authenticity to the role of Don Pasquale and internationally acclaimed tenor Colin Lee is Ernesto. Francesco Corti conducts. Fri 24 Jan 7.15pm Sun 26 Jan 4pm Wed 29 Jan 7.15pm Sat 1 Feb 7.15pm

Puccini

Puccini’s sense of drama is second to none and Butterfly sees him doing what he does best – painting beautifully exotic pictures in sound that are dramatic, often hauntingly lyrical, and full of emotion. Korean soprano Hye-Youn Lee, one of The Independent on Sunday’s ‘Faces to Watch’ in 2013, and Anne Sophie Duprels (Manon 2009) share the role of Butterfly and José Ferrero (Tosca 2012) is Pinkerton. Scottish Opera’s new Music Director Emmanuel JoelHornak (Hansel and Gretel 2012) conducts. Supported by Lord and Lady Laidlaw
