PROKOFIEV’S WITTY MASTERPIECE
Betrothal in a Monastery Prokofiev
Royal Conservatoire of Scotland in collaboration with Scottish Opera Sung in English with English supertitles
Now in its seventh successful year, the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland's ambitious winter collaboration with Scottish Opera continues with a third Prokofiev opera, following the success of 2009’s Love for Three Oranges and 2010’s War and Peace (shortlisted for an RPS Music Award).
Director Rodula Gaitanou Conductor Timothy Dean Designer Jamie Vartan Lighting Designer Simon Corder
Based on Sheridan’s play The Duenna, this whacky but very human comedy celebrates all that is young love. Two boys, two girls, a greedy fish merchant and a bevy of monks who are more likely to be found drinking than praying. Prokofiev’s gift for sparkling wit and satire is never far away, and his score is an explosion of colour and lyricism with a host of unforgettable melodies. Singers from the Royal Conservatoire’s opera programme perform with The Orchestra of Scottish Opera, who also act as mentors for their young musicians. Scottish Opera’s senior specialist artisans and technicians work with the Royal Conservatoire’s costume makers, set builders and lighting and stage technicians throughout the process of creating this production. 8

SEASON 2011/12 MORE THAN MEETS THE EYE
Hansel and Gretel
The Rake’s Progress
New production
New production
Sung in English with English supertitles
Sung in English with English supertitles
Based on the Grimms’ fairy tale, Humperdinck’s Hansel and Gretel is both wonderfully unsettling and moving. Director Bill Bankes-Jones takes the opera back to its roots, revealing a macabre tale that’s full of enchantment.
A co-production with Turin Opera
Engelbert Humperdinck
Hansel and Gretel are getting under their mother’s feet and, at the end of her tether, she sends them into the woods to collect strawberries. Terrified, they spend the night on the forest floor. Next morning, they discover a house made of gingerbread and are soon helping themselves, unaware that they are falling straight into a trap set by the fabled Wicked Witch. Humperdinck’s rich score encompasses everything from luscious Wagnerian-inspired orchestration to touching tunes derived from traditional folk melodies. Irish soprano Ailish Tynan is Gretel, fresh from singing the role at the Royal Opera House. Leah-Marian Jones (Marcellina in 2010’s The Marriage of Figaro) is the Witch. Emmanuel Joël-Hornak conducts.

Igor Stravinsky
World-renowned Scottish director David McVicar returns to Scottish Opera to stage his first Rake’s Progress. A colourful tale of debauchery with a bevy of larger-than-life characters, this is the perfect focus for McVicar’s particular brand of incisive storytelling. Tom Rakewell abandons his sweetheart and simple country life in favour of the bright lights of London. But after a stay in Mother Goose’s tavern, a meeting with a bearded lady, and a game of cards with unusually high stakes, things don’t look promising for our hero. A 20th century pastiche of late 18th century opera, the music of The Rake’s Progress owes much of its inspiration to Mozart in Stravinsky’s own distinct take on the neo-classical style. A cast including Scottish Opera favourite Edgaras Montvidas brings the production to life. Siân Edwards conducts. Supported by The Scottish Opera Syndicate

Tosca
Giacomo Puccini Revival of the 1980 production Sung in Italian with English supertitles
Masterfully conceived by a consummate storyteller, Anthony Besch’s muchloved production transports Puccini's powerful drama to Fascist Italy in the 1930s, a setting entirely in tune with the dark intensity of this passionate tale. Floria Tosca, a famous diva, is engaged to Mario Cavaradossi. But Scarpia, the sadistic Chief of Police, is infatuated with her and plans to kill her lover and take her for himself. As Scarpia’s schemes unfold, Tosca and Cavaradossi are drawn into a devastating chain of events that has little chance of ending well. Puccini’s music, at times heartbreakingly tender, at times powerful and harrowing, captures the sweeping span of this epic story - from the exquisite stillness of a silent dawn in Rome, to the raw drama of Tosca’s final, desperate plight. Susannah Glanville, star of Opera North’s 2009 production, returns to the role of Tosca. Francesco Corti conducts. SOMEONE’S GOING TO BURN FOR THIS
On a distant and remote Scottish island, the Loch Parry Theatre Players mount a production of The Wicker Man. When their lead actor goes missing in mysterious circumstances, they call on the services of a television cop from the mainland to step in and save their production. Regularly popping up at the top of ‘Best Horror Film of all Time’ lists, with an unforgettable sense of creeping dread, a wonderfully memorable score by Paul Giovanni, career defining performances from Edward Woodward and Christopher Lee and arguably the best ending in cinema history, The Wicker Man is regarded as a true film classic. And now, in an affectionate new adaptation, the National Theatre of Scotland gives a gallus round of applause to this immortal chronicle of strange goings-on in a wee village. Co-written by and starring one of Scotland’s wittiest performers, Greg Hemphill of Chewin’ the Fat fame, An Appointment with the Wicker Man revels in a once-in-a-lifetime line-up of comic talent including that son of Saltcoats, Johnny McKnight, widely regarded as the likely inheritor of Stanley Baxter’s glittering mantle. Johnny IS the Loch Parry Theatre Players’ director, cajoling deep and meaningful performances from his actors as they am-dram, sing and dance their way towards their production’s incendiary finale. Directed by the National Theatre of Scotland’s very own Vicky Featherstone, An Appointment with The Wicker Man is a love letter to a unique and timeless cult masterpiece, except that someone forgot to pay the postage. It is at once a deliciously wicked homage to, and a tender celebration of, a piece of cinema history that reveals for us the spooky undercurrents we always did believe were lurking just below the surface of Scottish village life. This adaptation messes with forces it can't possibly comprehend but at the end of the night, only one thing is for sure, someone's going to burn for this.
