Victoria HALL

STOKE-ON-TRENT W H AT ’ S O N | J U LY- D E C E M B E R 2017

WELCOME TO THE VICTORIA HALL, STOKE-ON-TRENT AND YOUR WHAT’S ON GUIDE... We believe that our guide is the best way to showcase the amazing events we have here for local school and community groups. The Victoria Hall is often someone’s very first step to a future career in theatre and live entertainment.

A SNEAK PEEK INSIDE THE WORLD OF… A STAGE DOOR KEEPER They say that first impressions count and, at The Victoria Hall, the first people to make an impression on our touring cast and crew members is our lovely Stage Door team. Here, stalwart of the venues Paul Wood explains how…

‘My favourite part of the job is meeting the people. Whether they’re famous, infamous or just friendly, it’s brilliant to meet so many different people and characters. I particularly enjoy meeting the comedians, especially people like Paul Merton, who combine old-style and modern comedy. Part of the daily routine is to always check the notes left from the previous day. That’s very important for a Stage Door Keeper to do. If there is a show in, you must prepare yourself for a long but interesting day. There are peaks and troughs of activity throughout the day. I especially enjoy working on the plays because I used to take part in some Amateur Dramatic plays so it’s nostalgic. I also love the atmosphere of plays. The most important skill to have as a Stage Door keeper is endurance! You can be on the Stage Door for many hours with late finishes and early starts, so you have to learn to pace yourself through it but it is worth it. I would also say strong communication and social skills are very important as you speak to so many different people, from theatre staff, production staff and crew, cast members and celebrities. Above all else, be welcoming!’

SCHOOL PERFORMANCES Each year, The Victoria Hall plays host to a number of Schools’ performances. From music concerts to recorder festivals, thousands of school children have experienced performing on the Victoria Hall stage. It is a privilege to provide a platform for young people to express themselves artistically and, who knows, these could be the stars of the future!
