‘I love the great dance shows that we have here at the Empire and I can’t wait for the latest production from Matthew Bourne, The Red Shoes. Thinking about the movie takes me back to when I was a little girl watching it on TV on a Saturday afternoon. I’m really looking forward to seeing how it gets brought to life on the stage. I’m also looking forward to seeing the great dance scenes in Billy Elliot The Musical. I’ve heard lots about it, and it’s never been to Liverpool before, so it should be amazing! La Cage Aux Folles is new to me, but it looks like a good fun show and it’s really exciting that we’ll be the first

Rewrites followed, but the kernel of the movie was there and, by the time director Stephen Daldry picked up on it in 1999, it was ready to go into production. By the following year, Billy Elliot was the toast of the Cannes Film Festival and the 14-year-old Jamie Bell was being hailed as a star. That’s when things got really interesting. Among the audience at that first screening was none other than Elton John. He didn’t just like the movie; he loved it so much he wanted to turn it into a stage musical. It was the story he’d been seeking for all his career,

It was a story that would stand as a metaphor for all our desires to be fulfilled, to be recognised not as the ugly ducklings we appear to be, but as the beautiful swans we know we could become. With its backdrop in the fractious coalfields of the north-east and its goal in the Royal Ballet School in London, the tale would be as gritty as it was romantic. It would be another 10 years before Hall would start toying with this idea and three years after that before a production company expressed an interest in it. Now with the producer demanding a screenplay, Hall realised he’d done a lot of

Their hard work paid off and Daldry’s production of Billy Elliot the Musical, with choreography by Peter Darling, was rapturously received. One critic called it “A model of fluidity and intelligence”. In New York, it won 10 Tony Awards including Best Musical, more than any other British show in Broadway history. Its first UK and Ireland tour kicked off in February 2016 and still the plaudits kept coming. Today, it has been seen by over 11 million people on five continents and in several languages, with its haul of awards exceeding 80 - a success story that mirrors the triumph of Billy Elliot himself.
