It’s not often that I read a book twice, at least not back to back, but I feel I would be remiss if I did not tell you about The Water Keeper, written by multiple New York Times best-selling author Charles Martin. It is published by Thomas Nelson, who has been publishing Christian books and resources since 1798.

It is a gritty treatment of a highly emotional topic, that of human trafficking.

It is taut, fast paced, set in Florida’s Intracoastal

Waterways, and one of the fascinating side benefits is that it frames the story within the context of boating.

You might say, “Yeah, well, I don’t boat, and why would I need to know anything about human trafficking?” My response would be that boating and dealing with water and currents and storms and wakes and chop and fuel and maritime law are the perfect way to illustrate the fierce love of a single

The Water Keeper goes into detail describing the tactics used by traffickers against both the girls and their families, and Mr. Martin has clearly done his homework. I had the privilege of hearing him and Kathrine discuss his book on a Facebook live event, and heard just what prompted him to dive into some dark waters in order to tell the tale in a redemptive way.

parent who is up against an unspoken deadline searching for her daughter. It does one of the most skillful jobs I have ever seen of discussing fatherlessness and appealing to what Kathrine Lee, co-founder of Pure Hope Foundation refers to as the “hero’s heart.” Kathrine and her husband Michael have a ranch in Texas and a marvelous team that rescues and rehabilitates young women who have been trafficked, and I will tell you this much: there is not a trafficked girl alive on this planet that didn’t get entangled in the web of trafficking without having a longing for her daddy or her Daddy.

Charles was tempted to just haul off and hit the guy. Instead, he moved around him and decided that his next book would be a work of fiction based on fact, and he spent several months being schooled on a most horrendous subject by members of the Florida law enforcement community that specialize in going after human traffickers and rescuing their victims.

The Water Keeper is the result, and the first time I tore through it, desperate to see how it ends. I am half way through my second time, and as an author and someone who has personally encountered people who have been trafficked, I am captured once again. The theme is timeless: leaving the 99 and going after the one.

The imagery is engaging, and the result is satisfying. It is not an easy read, so be forewarned. Get it and devour it. It will stretch you, and you’ll be glad you were stretched.

CQ Brown, 98-zip

by Ali Elizabeth Turner History was made earlier this week as General Charles “CQ” Brown was sworn in as the Chief of Staff of the United States Air Force.

The ceremony was held in the Oval Office and conducted by Vice President Mike Pence, and President Trump was standing by. Brown is the first African-American to hold the position, and in an era when it sometimes seems like we are going backwards when it comes to race relations, his appointment as well as his deportment are a fresh breeze of true hope for everyone.

The phrase “98-zip” has to do with the fact that his confirmation was unanimous, and when you look at CQ’s record, it’s easy to see why. He is an experienced F-16 pilot. His undergrad degree

is in civil engineering, and he has a master’s degree in aeronautical science from Embry-Middle. He has thousands of hours in the sky and 130 hours in combat. He was the commanding general for the Pacific Air Forces. He has commendations a mile long, and has been distinguished both as a leader and a pilot.

The Philippine Air Force gave him their Air Force Gold Wings badge. He is a 4-star general and an excellent speaker.

When George Floyd was killed, CQ gave about a five-minute speech to his entire command that, in my view, was balanced and perfectly showed the dilemma of all soldiers, irrespective of color, when it comes to loving their career and their troops and living life outside of the military.

He made it clear that he feels like he lives in two worlds: one where in the past he felt he had to “overprove” his worth due to his color, and another where he feels like he’s being accused of “not being black enough.”

What impressed me was CQ would start his statements in the video with “I’m thinking that….” and there were nearly five minutes of them.

But at the end, as the great leader that I sense he is, he invited his Airmen to tell him what they were thinking. In other words, he seems to be a man who is capable of sharing his heart, expects others to do so as well, but at the end of the day will make the decision that he believes will

benefit his country and his Airmen -- a decision befitting of a general and a chief of staff.

The vice-president tweeted, “President@realDonaldTrump & I have every confidence our Air Force will only grow stronger under General Brown’s leadership!” For his part,

the president congratulated Brown for achieving the “capper” on his “incredible career,” and noted that Brown’s 98-0 confirmation vote in the Senate was “an achievement.”

I think it’s safe to say that General Brown has risen to the top on his own merits, experience, and ability to lead; and it appears that he is just the man for the job. I think he is going to lead the Air Force admirably through a dicey time, and I expect him to be one of the great generals in the history of the United States Air Force. May God bless General Brown and his family, and “We are glad you are at the controls, Sir.”

Aimee Phlegar, Holistic Therapist

by Ali Elizabeth Turner Over the years, I have found that most often the best health care practitioners, whether they are mainstream or natural/complementary, are those who have had to wrestle with intense health challenges themselves. Many times they have tried everything from the allopathic to the alternative, to no avail. Then, something clicks, something works, and the triumph translates into a passion to make a living helping others. That is the case with Aimee Phlegar, whose practice is located at 26330 Old Highway 20 in Madison, right across the main entrance to the new Toyota-Mazda plant. Sending Off The Seniors

by Ali Elizabeth Turner There is no doubt that in many ways 2020 has been one of the strangest years on record. As aggravating have been the COVID/ Coronavirus Capers at times, one of most positive things that has come out of great uncertainty has been great creativity. The mayor as well as everyone who has helped mentor the class of 2020 Mayor’s Youth Commission wanted to do something special for the graduating seniors as they launched into the next phase of their life. After all, it was not exactly the standard prom-thengraduation-then-summerthen-college-or-new-job scene here in Athens or anywhere else, and everyone was proud of how they had adapted to circumstances that were unprecedented.

To properly honor the grads, Larry and Kay Bur-

lingame, Helen Greenhaw, and Kathy Cochren put together a beautiful reception for the Youth Commission participants, which was held in the council chambers of City Hall. The flowers were from Isom’s U-Pick, the food was perfect, and all of it was done with the current COVID guidelines in place. The kids brought their parents and were presented with special commemorative gifts.

These included an Athens Bi-centennial coin, pen, decorated fruit jar, and out of leaders’ own pockets the kids were given a 25 dollar gift certificate.

Mayor Ronnie told me that he took the plunge and used the time at the reception for feedback from the kids. It had been months since they had been in the same room,

and he wanted to know what they liked, as well as what they didn’t, and what they would change.

“They had been sad that we had to shut down so early because they still had projects they were planning on completing,”

said the mayor. They found other ways to serve, even in the midst of COVID, and so far, no one would have changed anything. It was emotional to send them on their way, yet everyone is looking forward to this year with a new crew.

“We need to especially pray for kids, teachers, and parents,” said Mayor Ronnie as we discussed the fact that back-toschool is upon us again.

“This year has been crazy, and people did well, but they all need our prayers for this year. They always do, but this year especially,” he added. He went on to mention that the City of Athens is looking for a new city planner. Erin Tidwell has been hired

by TARCOG, (Top of Alabama Regional Council of Governments) and while she’ll be interfacing with the city from time to time, she’ll be missed at City Hall. “We are also

looking to hire a new fire chief,” he said.

Displayed in the City Hall lobby, both for the senior send-off as well as for the viewing pleasure of all who enter the building is a triptych display of the photography of a 10-yearold girl by the name of Alex Hansen. Alex entered the Earthy Art Contest sponsored by Keep Athens-Limestone Beautiful and won first place in the age 8-10 category.

Her photos are stunning, no matter the age of the photographer. All photos were taken in Limestone County, and are a fitting reminder of the fact that we indeed live in Alabama the Beautiful.

Things looped around again to the strangeness of our times, and the need to pray. “It gets ‘real real’ when it hits the house,” said the mayor. I nodded, we prayed, and then it was time for Ronnie to roll.

Hard to believe we are already in the month of August, which means it is time for schools to start back up.

I hated this time of the year as a kid. Sadly, we are still facing the ongoing dilemma known as COVID-19, though I have a suspicion the doom and gloom will end shortly after November.

COVID-19 has changed the scope of how we live life.

The school year is right around the corner and because I have two teenagers about to start school, I feel the need to write an article detailing how a person can have a successful school year and what actions are necessary to do so. Staying organized is so important, yet so many people struggle with the organizational factor. I can remember being a kid, and the struggle was real. I did not know if I was coming or going and truly, I do not know if my parents had a clue either. We were surviving…trying to make it through each school year.

Did I already say the struggle was real?

goal. Sounds funny writing this, but I believe we have become a society that likes to play the victim card instead of giving ourselves goals to achieve. Though writing down goals is an elementary concept, many people do not write down their goals.

What you want to accomplish are mere dreams until you write them down, and at that point in time, they become goals. If you want to be a better math student – write it down. If you want to have better attendance – write it down. Whatever it is you are desiring to achieve – write it down. This is the first secret to achieving success.

The next step is to detail

what actions you are going to need to take to achieve the desired result. If you want to become a better student in a particular subject, your focus could be upon getting a tutor, or maybe you want to watch instructional videos on the subject. Maybe you need to do something archaic in the 21st century and visit the library to check out some books on your desired topic.

We live in the technology age, and I am surprised at how few people go to the library. What a great resource that not all people even use.

In detailing your steps, you need to be as specific as possible while also giving yourself a timeframe in which you expect to achieve your

desired results or start seeing improvements. I recommend setting time expectations early and often because if you wait too long, it could be too hard to make any necessary changes to what you have been doing. Also, you must be flexible and ready to adapt to change. If what you are trying is not working, you cannot keep doing the same things repeatedly while expecting different results. This is the definition of insanity.

You have written down what you want to achieve. You have taken the time to write out specifically what actions you need to take. You have set forth a timetable to evaluate your success and failure.

Now comes the hardest part

and that is doing. So many people find the planning stage to be the easiest. It is easy to make a “To Do” list but hard to do the list.

The final step is getting motivated to do the work.

You know what you want to achieve, you have a clue what needs to be done, and now you need to go do it.

If you have truly taken the time to write out in detail from what was listed above, you will have a leg up on most Americans. Sometimes people fail because they do not thoughtfully plan to attack life. If you want to achieve something great, it takes work. Are you willing to work for your goals?

Here is the advice I wish I would have been given back then. I wish my parents would have been given this advice too! First things first – what is your goal for the upcoming year? What is your focus going to be?

What are you wanting to accomplish? The very first thing a person must realize is what their desired result looks like. Too often we go about life not having a clue as to what we want and cannot even recognize it when we get it. The first step is to write down what the student wants to achieve. We are going to call this your

Public safety concerns in the face of SARS-CoV2, also known as Covid-19, have given rise to many canceled events like the Summer Concert Series, Duck and Run 5K, and Ardmore Police and Fire Reserve Rodeo; postponed events like Ardmore Car Show and Limestone County Sheriff’s Rodeo; or events moving to virtual options like the 9/11 Heroes Race, Chick-fil-A-Athens 10K, 5K and 1-Mile, and Women’s Resource Center Annual Banquet.

The shine of polished chrome competes with the smiles of spectators for this annual Elkmont High School Marching Band fundraiser.

The Greatest Show on Dirt is Happening August 21 and 22 The wait is over! The Limestone County Sheriff’s Rodeo, a highly-anticipated event each May, was postponed until June and then forced to postpone indefinitely due to pub-

lic health concerns. Well, the wait is over for all the buckaroos and buckarettes waiting for all of the bronco-busting and bull-riding fun. The dirt will fly at the Limestone Sheriff’s Arena on AL-99 at 8 p.m. each night.

Rev Things Up Elkmont High School Band’s fundraiser of the year is a go on August 22 with the shiny rides rolling in for your perusing at 10 a.m. All makes and models are welcome for this event with trophies, places, and awards being dished out for some cool rides. Remember to bring your chair for the live music – plus there’ll be concessions and vendors for you to enjoy.

Summer Concert Series: Singing on the Square Makes Announcement Regarding 2020 Season

The Athens-Limestone County Tourism Association, organizer of the Summer Concert Series: Singing on the Square, has been monitoring the SARSCoV-2 (Covid-19) public health crisis in Limestone County.

As with all decisions, a major factor was weighing the benefits against the harms, including the well-being of our citizens – our friends, family and neighbors who are elderly, newborn, battling cancer, living with immune conditions, living with heart conditions or diabetes and other underlying health concerns – while also considering the well-being of our economy and the potential impact should a rollback of operation for restaurants, shops, and other facilities in the community by order of the Governor Kay Ivey and Alabama Public Health occur; and the potential of a reinstatement of a "Shelter in Place Order" due to the present and continuing increases in the number of SARS-CoV-2 (Covid-19) cases in Limestone County and throughout the state of Alabama that has had the Alabama Public Health authorities presently labeling Limestone county a "VERY HIGH RISK" for transmission preceding the July 4th weekend.

With these many factors and more in motion during this public health crisis, AthensLimestone County Tourism Association has determined the remainder of the Sum-

mer Concert Series: Singing on the Square should be canceled to aid in efforts to reduce the spread of SARSCoV-2 (Covid-19) in the best interest of our community.

Teresa Todd, President of Athens Limestone Tourism, said, "It's not a decision we came to lightly, as so many in the Athens-Limestone community are desperately seeking some normalcy during these uncertain times.

The Athens-Limestone County Tourism’s popular Summer Concert Series brings hundreds of spectators to the Marion Street steps of the Limestone County Courthouse for each free concert. In 2018, Athens Main Street aligned Fridays After Five with the Summer Concert Series drawing even larger crowds to the Square for dining, shopping, and other activities in addition to Tourism’s concert. The crowds grew again as the Athens Entertainment District was introduced by Athens Main Street and the City of Athens during the June 19, 2020 activities. The Keep Athens-Limestone Beautiful organization has existed in Athens and Limestone County for over 40 years. It began in 1977 as Athens-Limestone Clean Community.

Though it has grown and changed over the years, it has always had as its core mission to empower citizens of Athens and Limestone County to take greater responsibility for enhancing their community environment. KALB accomplishes this through education, litter awareness and control, recycling, and beautification.

Lynne Hart has been the executive coordinator for KALB for 21 years, and on August 1, she began her much deserved retirement. Having worked with Lynne for over seven years, I have seen firsthand how much time, energy, and heart she has put into this organization. To say she gave one hundred percent is not enough! Many programs and projects have been put into place under her leadership, and she has made a huge difference in our community since her move here from Cleveland, Ohio, in 1999.

She truly loves Athens and Limestone County.

Thankfully, she has chosen Athens as her home, and she is not going far!

Over the last seven and a half years, I have thoroughly enjoyed working with Lynne. I have grown to love and appreciate her for who she is, how hard she works, and what she stands for. When I was hired as KALB’s sec-

retary/office manager in 2013, she was my boss; but now I consider her to be one of my closest friends.

She will be missed tremendously, and she has left some very large shoes to be filled!

I would like to take a moment to introduce myself.

My name is Leigh Patterson. I was born and raised here in Athens. I graduated from Athens Bible School in 1990 and attended Calhoun Community College.

My entire life, other than a two-year stint in Dallas, Texas, in the early 2000s, has been spent here. My husband, Eric, was also born and raised here. We have been married for almost 26 years. Our twin daughters, Erin and Lind-

sey, were born in Texas, but were raised here in Athens.

Our parents and extended families live here. Athens and Limestone County are held very dear to my heart.

The KALB organization has been a joy to work for over the last seven years.

I am very humbled by and grateful for the opportunity to move into the role of executive coordinator.

Give Yourself Grace

Imagine for a moment that you can see yourself through someone else’s eyes. You are able to see your struggles in a different light. You can see your victories and your defeats.

You can spot the times that you need someone to grant you the gift of grace. Now, why is it so hard to do just that? Why are we unable to cut ourselves a break? Why do we hold ourselves to such standards that we do not hold others to?

I want to challenge all of you for the month of August to give yourself a break. Allow yourself to relax. Give yourself grace! The same grace you are willing to offer your family and friends, offer to yourself. You are not doing yourself any favors by striving to hold yourself to such a high standard of perfection. When you do that, you are never satisfied with

yourself. You are left feeling like you never measure up.

If your friends took a survey about you, I’m sure they would see all the good that you take for granted about yourself. So step back, see the good in yourself, and don’t be so hard on yourself. Grant yourself the grace you give to others.

The recipe this week is a delicious and guilt-free dessert. Yes, I said guilt-free dessert. It is summery and light and perfect for these hot August nights. I hope you love it!

Berry Cheesecake Fluff Ingredients: 2 cups quartered strawberries 2 cups clean blueberries 1 cup blackberries 1 cup raspberries 1 8oz block of cream cheese at room temp.

2 cups whipping cream 1 tsp vanilla extract 1 cup Swerve confectioner’s sweetener (split into 2 half cups)

Directions:

Add the cream cheese in a mixer with 1/2 cup of the Swerve and vanilla extract. When these are all well incorporated, set the mixture aside.

Whip the heavy cream with a mixer until soft peaks form. Once the cream is a light whipped cream, add the second half of the Swerve and mix with the heavy cream until stiff peaks form.

Add the cream cheese mixture to the whipped cream and beat at medium until well mixed.

Fold in berries using a rubber spatula gently so not to squish or puncture the berries.

Chill overnight.

Becoming A Woman, Honestly Article inspired by Outlander TV Series

by Tina Cook Director, Athens-Limestone County Family Resource Center It is strange - the things I remember. Moments burned into my heart forever, while others have faded with time.

Ingrained in me was a belief that I was different from other people. As a young girl, I saw no path before me. I simply took a step, then another and another and another. I was always moving…rushing toward someplace, but I did not know where, until one day, I turned around and looked back. I saw that each step I had taken was a choice -- to go left, to go right, to go forward or at times backward, and sometimes not to even go at all.

Those steps led me a great distance from anywhere I would have ever imagined for myself! All those choices had me so far away from the rural farm where I was raised, that 30 years passed before I circled back to the heart of where I began. What I have discovered is that until I faced THAT girl in the light of who I had become, there was no real hope to escape the web that had me bound. The Light had many hard but truthful tales to tell me; things the enemy

had hidden from me or perhaps simply gussied up to deceive me. But underneath it all, were many treasures…my hopes and dreams of long ago yearning for life. Untangling myself from those grave clothes was no easy task! To be frank, had I known how hard it would be and just how tightly they were wound, I probably never would have even tried. Oh, but God…!

God had such compassion and desire for a relationship with me that He revealed things to me slowly and gently. Over a year had passed before I began to realize what a long journey was still ahead of me. By then, I would not dare give up or give in because I had too much equity (aka: hard work) built up in my life. I had traveled too far out of the wilderness to turn back! So, I trudged forward to the unknown through many tears and much frustration.

Turney became my mentor and my family! He gave me rides and eventually rented me a room when it was time to leave the recovery house. I stayed safely there with him until I left Florida to care for my dying mother in 2013.

Isom’s U-Pick Flowers: Beautiful Blooms And Fine Photography

U-Pick field is located right next to Classic Sign Works, and the address is 23615 US 72 in Athens. At that time in 2015, Brooke was a professional photographer who owned her own business, and being able to take photos of the flowers themselves as well as provide a backdrop for client photos, gave her business a wonderful boost.

Brooke and Kent also planted some zinnias, and they had a one-day sale at the end of the brief season that became the unexpected launch of Isom’s U-Pick Flowers. “The oneday sale recouped our costs for the field, and we had good response,” said Kent.

The Isoms planted 1.5 acres in 2016, about 2/3 of it in sunflowers and the rest in zinnias, and it was a monster hit! They opened up the field on the weekends, and people came from near and far to pick their own bouquets as well as use the field for their photographic endeavors. At this point, the window of opportunity was only about two weeks, and they were busy and profitable ones.

When 2017 came along, the Isoms staggered the planting schedule in order to extend the growing season, and it lasted from June through July, and for two weeks in August.

Next, 2018 and 2019 saw the building of the shed where people come to complete their U-Pick transactions. They were also able to rent out the field to other photographers. One of the things that has worked well for the Isoms has been the honor system of paying. While they are there on Fridays and Saturdays from 7:30 a.m. until noon, people come at all hours all week long for all kinds of reasons -- to get certain lighting for pictures, to harvest flowers at the perfect time of day, or to quickly make a much-needed

bouquet. There is an honor box, and as Brooke said, “We have honored the honor system, and it has worked well.”

Pre-assembled bouquets are $12 each, and can be just sunflowers, or only zinnias or gladiolas by themselves. They can also be put in a combination. Right now, U-Pick is selling around 50 of the pre-cut bouquets per week, and recently, a lovely one showed up at the farewell party that was given at City Hall for the graduating class of 2020 members of the Mayor’s Youth Commission before they headed off for school.

this well, it is most helpful that Kent Isom has an agricultural degree in horticulture from Auburn University. He specializes in fruit and vegetable production. He works full time in his family’s legendary orchard, and the U-Pick fields keep an already busy farming family hopping; but he loves what they are doing. “We enjoy giving the community something to do,” Kent said with a smile.

So now we are in the middle of the 2020 season, one that has had its challenges for all of us due to the Coronavirus Capers. If anything, it probably has helped Isom’s UPick thrive, even as people are mindful of social distancing.

The reason for this is that besides being beautiful and having the chance to be out in the middle of God’s gorgeousness, (as Brooke’s photos to illustrate this article so skillfully portray) people are having the chance to safely be amongst people, enjoy the “power of flowers,” and just feel a touch more “normal.” Kent and Brooke together told me, “We enjoy giving the community something to do. Everybody loves it, and it makes people happy.” They are enjoying sharing knowledge with the community, and it has been their best U-pick season yet.

In contrast to the “field-based” community building where everybody is able to come together safely and reasonably, there is also the desire to help photographers build

their businesses. The addition of the photography-only field in 2020 makes it possible for photographers to have their exclusive turf; they don’t have to work around people who have come to pick fresh blooms while shutterbugs are framing their “perfect pic.”

Photographers who wish to use the exclusive field need to contact Brooke; the other field is open to everyone to photograph for a donation.

The flower fields have become the backdrop for senior portraits, family portraits, and engagement portraits; and as the fields grow, they will also attract butterflies. Besides being beautiful, butterflies are important for pollination, the development of hardier native plants that need fewer resources.

Kent told me that they have hopes to expand the U-Pick possibilities to include strawberries, blackberries, and blueberries. But for now, you can come to the U-Pick fields for flowers that, as Brooke said, are “astounding.” You can park in the Classic Sign Works parking lot and safely walk to the fields. Come see the Isoms as soon as you can, and go home with an abundance of blooms to brighten your summer!

Coping With The Heat

Summer is most definitely still around here in North Alabama, and while most all of us are thrilled to be enjoying the long warm days, it does mean we have to be more careful as we enjoy them.

The heat can do some scary things to our bodies and can quickly even cause major damage if we are not mindful.

Heat exhaustion is real and can be quite dangerous. High temperatures and high humidity combine to make for a very extreme environment, especially when doing strenuous physical activity. Some symptoms to be aware of are heavy sweating and a rapid pulse. These are the beginning signs which need not be taken lightly because without treatment, they can lead to heatstroke, which can be life-threatening.

sweating, fatigue, thirst, and muscle cramps. This is the precursor to heat exhaustion.

At this point, it is good to take a break in a cooler place and drink some water and/or a sports drink.

The signs of heat exhaustion which could possibly be experienced are cool yet moist skin with goosebumps while still in the heat, heavy sweating, faintness, dizziness, fatigue, weak but rapid pulse, low blood pressure upon

standing, muscle cramps, nausea, and headache. If you are experiencing any of these, you need to stop your activity and rest in a cooler place; air conditioning would be preferable, but if that’s not possible, find a shaded area.

Drink water and even some sports drinks which will give you an electrolyte boost. If symptoms persist after an hour or so, medical attention should be considered.

There are several ways to

help prevent heat exhaustion. Choose loose fitting and lightweight clothing which aids your body in cooling. Always wear sunscreen, and do not forget to reapply it about every two hours. Sunburn also affects your body’s ability to cool itself. Stay well hydrated, drinking mainly water and limiting alcohol intake. Be sure to check any warnings on medications you are taking, as some medications can have adverse effects when

you are exposed to excessive heat. If possible, avoid strenuous activity in the hottest parts of the day. If you need or want to do heavy activity in the extreme heat of the day, work your way up to it; in other words, condition your body and let it adjust to the heat over a time period of a few weeks, staying a little longer each time.

Let’s all be smart, stay hydrated, and have a great time enjoying the remaining days of summer!

Household Hazardous Waste Collection

Limestone County. On August 29 from 8 a.m. to noon, Limestone County residents can bring HHW items to the Athens Middle School parking lot (the old high school on Hwy. 31) for disposal, free of charge.

Keep Athens-Limestone Beautiful has been working closely with the Solid Waste Disposal Authority of Athens and Limestone County to procure funding to cover this event. The Limestone County Commission has also designated funds to utilize if the event goes over the budgeted $35,000.

KALB has also been working closely with the Solid Waste Disposal Authority of the City of Huntsville (SWDA) in planning this event. “The SWDA has a drop-off facility for Madison County residents and has a great relationship with Clean Harbors, the company that will be handling the waste brought to our event,” said Leigh Patterson, KALB’s new executive coordinator.

KALB is grateful to residents who have held on to their HHW

materials and have not resorted to improper disposal out of frustration. A survey taken in 2019 showed that some people have dumped these chemicals down the drain or in a ditch, burned them, or have hidden them in their household trash.

Limestone County residents should definitely take advantage of this opportunity to dispose of these items correctly.

Wynk’s Story An incident that occurred in the summer of 2019 brought awareness to the problem of there being no proper way to dispose of HHW materials in Limestone County.

Last summer Keri Chalmers, assistant manager at the Athens-Limestone Recycling Center, received a call from someone letting her know that a mother cat and four very tiny kittens were injured when someone dumped oil-based paint and lacquer thinner down a storm drain. The mother was using the storm drain as a refuge for her new family. Keri, who is an animal lover, took in three of the kittens in an attempt to save them. The fourth kitten was never found.

Keri named them Wynken, Blynken, and Nod from a well-known children’s poem.

Sadly, Blynken could not be saved and died within 48 hours of the incident. Wynken, or Wynk

as she is affectionately called, was in bad shape and became the “poster child” for the seriousness of a lack of proper disposal options for these chemicals.

Disposing of household hazardous waste improperly is not a victimless crime. When something is dumped or disposed of improperly it doesn’t just “go away.” It goes somewhere.

Groundwater, air, and soil are polluted with chemicals that people dump in ditches, pour down drains, or burn. As we have seen with the feline family, animals and people can be seriously injured. Hiding HHW in trash containers can cause serious problems as well. Mixing some chemicals together can cause toxic fumes, fire, or even explosions. When trash trucks compress trash, cans and bottle break open and chemicals can mix.

MATERIALS ACCEPTED • Paint and Related Products such as oil or water-based paints, mineral spirits, turpentine and thinners, furniture strippers, paint removers, stains, aerosols.

• Automotive Products such as transmission fluid, brake fluid,

anti-freeze (motor oil should be taken to the Athens-Limestone Recycling Center on Lucas Ferry Rd. for recycling).

• Household Cleaners such as oven cleaners, toilet cleaners, disinfectants, drain cleaners, rug and upholstery cleaners, floor and furniture polishes, ammonia or bleach-based products.

• Household Chemicals such as acids, pool chemicals, solvents, mercury thermometers and thermostats, fluorescent lights.

MATERIALS NOT ACCEPTED • Explosives • Radioactive or Biological Waste Please try to bring materials in their original containers. If the containers are damaged, please put them in a box that has been lined with two garbage bags or in a container with a lid. If your household wastes are leaking, put the box or container in cat litter, sawdust, or other similar absorbent materials for transport.

How Crisis Can Bring Out Our Best!

In 2016, many public officials and civil rights leaders gathered together in Washington to celebrate the opening of the new African American History museum on the National Mall.

On CBS This Morning that September, Charlie Rose interviewed Senators Tim Scott (R) and Cory Booker (D) about what the opening meant for the nation. United States Senator Tim Scott from Charleston South Carolina commented about how the massacre at Emmanuel

AME Church brought so many people together across the religious, political, and cultural spectrum. Scott said “There is something about a crisis that brings out the best in us.” The same can be said of the September 11 attacks in New York and Washington in 2011. One can remember the unforgettable scene on the front steps of the Capitol where various congressmen across party lines sang together, “God Bless America, land that I love.” That defining

moment inspired Americans at a difficult time.

Senator Scott went on to say, “If we hope for a better nation we have to rediscover love for each other. Love that is not an emotion but an action, a love that requires putting me after you. If we find that, and I think we will, our nation will present to the world who we are and what we can be.”

Charlie Rose then turned to Senator Booker of New Jersey and asked Booker how he hoped

the new African American Museum in Washington DC would both inform and inspire the nation for the future.

Senator Cory Booker eloquently answered, “In order for our nation to succeed, we have to have an irrational commitment to one another. We have to pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honor; that necessitates courageous empathy, that necessitates leading with love, it necessitates a level of citizenship where we understand that I need you as much as you need me…When I see you I don’t see an ‘other,’ I see myself. I see my destiny is interwoven with yours and I need to sacrifice for us, I need to pledge to you and all of us my life, my fortune, and my sacred honor.”

If a nation can muster the courage to embrace one another across political lines during times of crisis such as 9/11, the racist killings at the South Carolina church, and other national disasters, then it is indeed possible to rediscover our common humanity and come together during this pandemic and the struggle for justice and peace. We have shown in our recent history that we can indeed rise above ourselves for a greater

cause. The present can be extremely depressing, but as we consider our finest moments of togetherness in our history, we can have hope for the present and the future. Let us not despair; we have history to show us what is possible. We have shown that amazing “courageous empathy.” As fellow citizens, we may not always agree on the various issues and debates of our time, but we can all take advantage of this opportunity to show compassion, consideration, empathy, and lend a listening ear. These are opportunities to walk in another man’s moccasins, learn and become better.

Even though we may not see the world through the same lenses, we should never relinquish that “irrational commitment to one another.” We make progress for the good of all when we embrace the concept of “me after you.” When we see the children of “others,” as what Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. described as “all of God’s children,” this will provide a new perspective and lead to a greater respect for one another, even when we do not fully understand. This is essential in building a better world for the next generation. This current crisis is a tremendous opportunity to do just that.

by Steve Leland Just an unknown curmudgeon who takes his brain cells out for a walk now and again. The nice lady who ramrods this outfit has kindly provided this little Corner as a repository for the contents of the baggies resulting from some of those walks.

In the deposits that I leave in this Corner, I will refer to God as Yah and Jesus as Yeshua. It just seems to me a tad bit more respectful and I hope that you can humor me in this. If you have been dipped in lemon juice and don’t find jocularity particularly humorous, this probably won’t be your favorite column. Not that I have any pretentions as a comedian, I merely enjoy the gift of humor that our Creator bestowed upon us. After all, He’s the one that came up with the duck-billed platypus.

Just a few thoughts for today: Something that I heard about 50 years ago, Yah loves you just the way that you are, but too much to leave you that way.

Matthew 24:27 (KJV) For as the lightning cometh out of the east, and shineth even unto the west; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. I had always assumed that this

was telling us that Yeshua would return suddenly; but one day it dawned on me that lightning doesn’t travel east to west. Only daybreak starts in the East and spreads to the West.

It is a slow progression of lightening when you are watching for it, but it does seem to change suddenly when you aren’t paying attention. May we invite the light of His Kingdom into our lives each day.

Btw: Darkness flees before the light.

Hebrews 13:2 (KJV) Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares. According to this verse, there are angels walking amongst us that we assume are humans. Somehow I doubt that they are just hanging out with us in order to test whether or not we will help them, although that has its own implications.

What if their purpose is deeper? What if they are attempting to help perfect us? What if that person that was a problem to me the other day wasn’t a person? What if I gave the rough side of my tongue to an angel unawares?

I’m not thinking that that is what Paul would have considered entertaining them.

Dog Barker

The Pet Gate

Over a month ago, I was given one of those pet/child metal gates that installs by extending the screws out to the wall.

Well, me being me and taking no chances, I reinforced the gate by using a board for each side of the walls with indentions cut for the screws to lock into, and replaced the screws with stouter screws.

After installing the gate, I made sure the metal bar at the bottom was high enough for the robot vacuum to pass under but did not realize it would be an issue for my adopted boy, Woodrow. Nothing terrifies a Great Dane more than an unknown item being placed in the house that all of a sudden bars the way…LOL. Ask Woodrow; he will cry and tell the story of an evil gate that looked to get him when he passed by it.

Just because that metal bar might “whack” his shins every now and again when he gets enough courage to cross it, does not make it any easier for him to accept that it will not get him. On top of that, I now have to hear Woodrow cry pathetically when he is at an open gate and thinks he cannot step across the small bar at the bottom. I have to call to him and tell him, “It’s not going to get you.” To which he replies with a look of terror and those pleading eyes, “Daddy, please come get me!” Folks, I also have to go to the gate and step across it to his side and then step back across it to show him it is not going to get him. Only then will he step across it, but very quickly. Poor baby!

Is there anyone out there with a similar problem? Let

us talk about gates and what are good and not so good for our families. The basic wooden gate that locks into place by the wooden extenders is okay, but I would not recommend thinking it will stop large dogs unless they have good manners. A dog can easily push open a gate that uses extenders into the side of the wall, unless said extenders bolt into the wall.

I have seen smart dogs open gates, too, just by watching how we open them. LOL… don’t be fooled into thinking that safety latch will always work. I have seen a dog actually figure out the latch and open the gate. Sometimes a simple D-ring or carabineer can solve this issue. Yes, duct tape can also suffice, but as tape is always a temporary fix, good luck with

that! There are plastic gates that work just as well and are pretty much the same. But with plastic or wood, there is the problem of dogs chewing and destroying the gates.

Personally, I would choose a sounder gate and spend either the extra money for a good, American made, metal one or make it myself. I would also ensure that I bolt it into the wall of my home. If they chew that up, then we know that we are in trouble.

The best gates I have seen have been homemade. I have seen where a blacksmith made custom gates and when finished, the gate fit into the home naturally. If money is tight, make your own gates.

At Lowe’s Garden Center, I once found garden fence pieces that made great gates in my home with nails for

hinges. It all depends on your choice and budget. These gate pieces were metal and at the time I spent $20 each.

Though they were hinged using nails, they worked for my Danes. For a while I went gate crazy! I had a gate for my hall, bedroom, kitchen, and my dog door. In fact, I still use these gate pieces in my kitchen and dog door.

Let me caution everyone to please ensure that gates do not have any pieces that stick out which could catch your dogs’ collars and accidentally hang them. Something like that can harm children too; so think about that and look these gates over before installing them. A gate will not stop a climber either, and a dog that can jump over it; so think about that too.

Lastly, I want to tell y’all about a video a friend sent me about a family who put up a gate and their dog just kept jumping it. Anyway, the video shows the dog do this a few times. Finally, someone gets the idea of placing a vacuum cleaner in place of the gate. That’s right, the dog would not jump it…LOL. He just stood there looking at that vacuum and would not cross it. I can’t help but be reminded of my Woodrow when I see this video and just laugh. Be safe everyone and stay healthy.

Focusing

“Focusing is based on the very positive expectation of change. It envisions a person as a process.”

- Eugene Gendlin In my last article, we discussed the concept of felt sense. Felt sense describes the internal bodily awareness that arises from the mind’s increased awareness. It is the combination of emotion, awareness, intuitiveness, and embodiment. Eugene Gendlin created the term when working with clients, assisting them to intuitively focus inside themselves on a very subtle and vague internal bodily awareness, or “felt sense.” This sense contained information that, if attended to, would hold the keys to the resolution of the problems the client may be experiencing. Focusing is the therapeutic process developed by Dr. Gendlin that involves holding a kind of open, nonjudgmental attention to an internal knowing, which is directly experienced but is not yet in words. Focusing can be used to make clear what one feels or wants, to gather new insights regarding a particular situation, and to motivate change or healing. Focusing is a process and a learnable skill.

Gendlin developed a methodology to focusing based on a six step approach.

Step one: Clearing space. When clearing space, take a moment pay attention inward,

to your body to see what is there when asking the questions, “How is my life going?” and “What is the most important thing for me right now?” You learn to sense these things within the body and then let the answers come slowly. You acknowledge it and recognize the bodily feeling associated with it. For example, you may be worried about a fight you had with a friend. You can put this thing outside of yourself, like on the floor in front of you. You can find the right distance between yourself and it. You are placing the thing you want to deal with outside of yourself. Then ask again what you feel.

Wait and feel. There may be more than one thing. Do this until you think/feel all of your issues are acknowledged and you have placed them at the right distance from you.

Step two: Felt sense.

From what came out, select one problem to focus on. Don’t allow yourself to go inside to deal with it or fix it. The purpose is to stand back from it and considerate it from the distance you created between you and it. Now there is it the issue, and you (the “I.”) Pay attention to where you usually feel things in your body. Allow yourself to accept what you are feeling and seeing. It might not be immediately clear, but just wait and see what comes.

There may be a physical sensation, like a tightness in your chest, or a queasiness in your stomach.

There is no right or wrong; just allow and acknowledge whatever comes.

Step three: Handle. Now you are sensing if there is a distinct quality of this felt sense that you can de-

Go back and forth between the felt sense and the word or phrase or image, and check how they resonate with one another. See if there is a bodily signal (a shift like a deep breath or a sigh). There may even be a changed sensation inter-

nally…an “aha” or “yes, that’s right.” You have to have both the felt sense and the word blending together. The key is not to force a response, but to just be with the feeling and capturing just the right words to describe it. Be accepting if there is still something unclear. Accept that too.

Step five: Asking. Now ask, “What is in this sense—the whole of it?”

What makes it so tight or heavy or however you described it? What does this thing that you have identified and put outside of you seem to need from you?

How does it want to be with you? Difficult questions, I know. But stay with the feeling until the right words or shift allows it to give or release.

Step six: Receiving. Finally, we receive whatever comes in a gentle way. Allow yourself to stay with it for a little while. Something else may come, but stay here and show your body empathy and gratitude for its knowledge.

Once you have received what your body has shared, bring yourself back slowly.

Become grounded, and then ask yourself how you are and what you learned from the experience.

The Silica Secret
