Some of you remember that I had a truly life-changing experience nearly four years ago in the form of a trip to Israel. It was sponsored by World Net Daily, and for almost two weeks I was on the same bus as WND’s cofounder Joseph Farah; his wife, Elizabeth; his daughter, Grace; and his mother-in-law, Mary.

I had already been a reader of WND for many years, and getting a chance to get to know the Farah family was a true joy.

Like me, once upon a time, Joseph Farah was a radical socialist. The difference between us was that I somehow managed to stay committed to non-violent resistance, and Joseph was a friend of Bill Ayres, one of the head honchos of the Students for a Democratic Society, better known as the SDS. He also was the co-founder of the Weather Underground, a domestic terrorist organization. Both Joe and I became Christians within a few years of each other, and began the adventure of a life time -first as believers, secondly by becoming conservatives.

Joseph was a correspondent in the Middle East, he was the editor for the Sacramento Union, worked for six years as executive news editor at the Los Angeles Herald Examiner, and has worked with Rush Limbaugh.

He has written best-selling books, produced award-winning films, and in recent years has watched his company come under attack from the cybermonopolies with which he competes.

Today, reluctantly, he issued the following statement, and I feel I would be remiss if I did not give the readers of Athens Now a chance to come to the aid of a man, family, and organization I highly respect. Here in part is his statement, and I know him well enough to know that this

was not easy for him to write: “I dare say no other human being on the face of the Earth has written as many words as I have about the existential threat the Internet Cartel poses to free speech, the free press and freedom of religion in America.

It’s not because I’m smarter or more insightful than everyone else. Rather, it’s because I witnessed first-hand, beginning in 2017, the devastating impact that ideological bias by Google,

Since then, it has become common knowledge that the Digital Cartel has it in for sites like WND, for conservatives, for Republicans and for Christians. They have been banned. They have been discriminated against in searches to the benefit of left-wing content. They have been marginalized. And they have been deprived of advertising as pun-

any torts that may arise from activities conducted on their platforms. They can’t be sued or prosecuted for defamation, libel, or indeed for any criminal activity that is generated by these Internet domains. That’s because they claim to be mere “carriers,” like the old phone company, and therefore can’t be held responsible for conversations, postings, or other online materials that involve illegal or otherwise dubious actors.

Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, has pointed out that this unique designation also assumes these “utilities” will serve all equally and not discriminate against people, companies or publishers based on their ideology or religious views. After all, Congress could never have passed

such a law in the first place if it allowed these "utilities" to engage in ideological or religious discrimination but exempted them from any legal consequences for violations, since that would blatantly infringe on the free speech, press and religion rights guaranteed all Americans by the First Amendment.

What this clearly demonstrates is that the Internet Cartel is already in violation of the Communications Decency Act. By using its special “utility” status to promote partisan politics, adopt a consistent left-wing lens in its presentation of the news, ban content objectionable to the anti-Christian bigots at the Southern Poverty Law Center, and use algorithms in search and display that punish conservatives, Republicans and other non-leftists, the cartel members abuse their special status as mere “carriers” of data.

One simple way to bring Google-Facebook into compliance is to revoke that special status – though it’s a little late in the game, since the cartel has already profited mightily over many years as companies operating under those special privileges.”

The Marvelous Mavens Of Operation Meatball

Recently our family was at a retreat in Tennessee, and one of the young musicians there, who dresses like Donna Reed and genuinely looks like she could be from the ‘40s, asked me at dinner one night if I had ever heard of Operation Meatball. I told her no, and she told me I needed to do an article about them.

Thinking this would be something that would either fit on the Food Channel or America’s Got Talent, I cast about in my mind as to what I could possibly say about meatballs that hadn’t already been said.

However, Miss G made me curious, and besides, I always just enjoy hearing her talk. She proceeded to tell me about some “marvelous mavens” by the name of Liberty, Jubilee, and Faith who dress in ‘40s clothing, perform ‘40s music and travel around the country thanking the remaining members of the Greatest Generation for their service.

The dictionary defines a “maven” as a trusted expert in a particular field, who seeks to pass timely and relevant knowledge on to others in the respective field. So how could Faith, Liberty, and Jubilee be considered “experts” when they are young enough to

be some of these guys’ great-grandchildren?

They listened to and honored their stories, immersed themselves in the culture of the day, asked a lot of questions, did research on everything from music to fashion to films to food, and set out on what was originally going to be a three year project to honor WWII vets before they passed on.

From their website, www.operationmeatball. com: “Our awareness of and love for WWII veterans started in 2005 when we participated in the 60th anniversary of Iwo Jima held in Fredericksburg, Texas. A few years later, our family traveled to Normandy for the first time and took part in the anniversary of the D-Day Invasion. The veteran friendships we formed there left an especially deep impression on us, and we were deeply impacted by the shortage of time we have with this unique and special generation. So during the summer of 2014, the three of us decided to commit the next three years to honoring and showing gratitude to the veterans of the Second World War. We did this through host-

ing events for the veterans in our local area, making house visits to veterans unable to travel, attending military reunions and WWII events with the purpose of meeting and interviewing veterans, volunteering with Honor Flight, greeting at the WWII Memorial, and recorded 3 CDS of WWII music for the veterans. Over the course of the three years we traveled over 200,000 miles, collected hundreds of stories, and met many, many wonderful veterans of WWII. The richness of the experience is almost indescribable.”

They struck such a chord with vets of all ages that it is now 2018, by popular

demand they have started a 501 C-3 to support themselves, and are committed to keep Operation Meatball going for those who served in Korea and Vietnam. They have another mission as well: “[We are] dedicated to honoring veterans and connecting them with the youth of today.”

As to the name, Operation Meatball, is there some kind of special significance? They get asked that often, and here is their answer: “And as far as where the name "Operation Meatball" comes from... well, there really isn't an answer to that. Before the 2014 trip to Normandy, we threw around the idea

of giving it a name in honor of previous endeavors such as Operation Overlord, Operation Fortitude, and the like. However, somehow along the way (no one really knows who started it) we ended up with Operation Meatball.

Not very dignified, but neither was the name Operation Mincemeat.” (Mincemeat is the code name given to the elaborate hoax perpetrated by the Brits wherein the planted body of a soldier who had supposedly died at sea was found by the Nazis off the coast of Spain containing false documents. This led Hitler to believe that the Allies were going to invade elsewhere, and it is largely believed that the ruse saved countless lives, as well as served to turn the tide of the war in Europe.)

We Reap What We Sow

D.A. Slinkard is the manager of the Athens Staples store Can you believe that we have been on a journey together for over 18 months in which I have been writing and you have been reading the motivational thoughts that come to my mind?

I am going to throw out there that a person must be careful what information they take in on a daily basis because there is a lot of bad information out there just waiting to bring you crumbling down. We live in a time period in which we are inundated with various messages expressing the desire to live a good life.

There are many things that appear to be good, but just know that not all things that appear good will be good for you.

The Bible warns us in Matthew 7:15, “Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.” Who would think that a motivational quote could be bad, but I am here to tell you not to be fooled by the wolves in sheep’s clothing. I recently came across 35 inspirational quotes on following your heart, which in theory sounded good, such as, “Make mistakes, take chances, be silly, be imperfect, trust yourself and follow your heart.Anonymous” or “Follow your heart.

Life is too short to be sidetracked by things everyone else wants you to do.”

If a person is not careful they could easily find themselves agreeing to those “cute” quotes, but know that you must be selective in what you allow into your life. People ask me how I find my ability to stay positive, to stay motivated, to have the right attitude when it comes to my daily approach to life. Honestly, my life has gotten better the more I rely upon Jesus Christ as my Lord and Savior. It is through my relationship with Jesus Christ and studying His Word that my attitude has changed.

I can tell you without any doubt I would have fallen victim to those cute quotes listed above, but please take the time to read your King James Bible. In reading my Bible, I see in Jeremiah 17:9, “The heart is

deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” How many good Christians have fallen victim to heathen quotes, such as following the heart? If we examine the other quote about life being too short, we see the quote is actually advocating us to walk contrary to what the Bible tells us. Why would any believer want to do this? Remember, even salt looks like sugar!

This article is to show that not all things that appear good are, and we can find great nuggets from the Bible. In fact, we will find many common phrases we use in the secular world such as John 8:32, “And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” Another great scripture is from Galatians 6:7, “Be not deceived; God is

not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap.” Now granted, oftentimes when we hear this, we do not have the first part of the scripture attached as we just hear that a man will reap what he sows. What about when someone does a good deed and we call them a Good Samaritan – yet again taken from the Bible.

The more you dive into your Bible, I believe you will be surprised at the great motivations you will find from the infallible Word of God. There are several more phrases we use in our everyday lives that come straight from the Bible, and I challenge you today to start your own scavenger hunt. You never know where the roads will lead, but I can

tell you of the positive impacts that Jesus Christ has had on my life. Who I am today is much different than the lost soul I started out as in my Christian walk with God. I appreciate everyone who has offered a kind word to me about my writings. You are an inspiration to keep up my writings because we can all find the good in life, we just need to be on the lookout for it. The only thing about maintaining a positive attitude is knowing it takes work, just like anything else in life, and with that I leave you with Romans 8:28, “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.”

A Blessed Back-To-School Season

The summer has flown by, and we could hardly believe that it was time for our annual back-to-school article. Both Mayor Ronnie and I have spent time in the classroom, and reminisced about everything from what he called “that distinctive smell of 5th and 6th grade kids who have just been running around hard on the playground for an hour,” to my having to delicately sidestep certain suggestions in the national Mexican government 5th grade curriculum on how to effectively educate girls about the anatomy of the opposite gender.

Many people are not aware that Mayor Ronnie’s undergrad degree is in education, and that he taught in West Limestone before he went to Vietnam, as well as in New Hope when he got back. “Back then, we had to pretty much do a cookiecutter approach to teaching science. I am glad that now teachers have the opportunity to be more creative,” he said. One thing has always been clear, and it is that he is in the corner of teachers, kids, and administrators. He told me that already he sees lights on at Athens Elementary classrooms when he gets home at night from various meet-

The Athens Mayor's Youth Commission will start taking applications the week of Aug. 27. Youth Commission is for students in grades 10-12 who attend Athens High School, Athens Bible School, Lindsay Lane Christian Academy or are home schooled in Athens.

The goal is to encourage these students to learn about local government's role and their role as citizens and to learn about their city so they will be informed and engaged citizens. During the year, students will visit with various city departments and community agencies, attend an Athens City Council meeting and Athens City Schools Board of Education meeting, and participate in community service.

Remember, buses are yellow for a reason, and that is the universal color of caution.)

“Because it’s the Bicentennial, we are going to spend more time than usual on the history of our area, especially as it applies to how government was formed.”

He also spoke with enthusiasm about the new high school, the new Athens Bible School, the renovation of the Houston Memorial Library, and the Scout House getting finished. “A lot of people have done a lot of work to bring these blessings to our town, and I believe it is going to be a great year,” he said. Then it was time to pray, and for Ronnie to roll.

Our run is just part of the bigger effort on behalf of the Travis Manion Foundation to unite communities internationally with one goal – to never forget the sacrifices of the heroes of September 11. Also, we want to honor our veterans, first responders, civilians, and military forces, who have made the ultimate sacrifice in

the wars since. Just who is Travis Manion, the man who made the statement, “If not me, then who?” Why do we run to honor him and many other members of a club nobody wants to join?

Travis Manion grew up in Doylestown, Pennsylvania, and was known for his strong leadership qualities, athleticism, and academic achievement. After graduating from the United States Naval Academy, he was awarded a commission to the United Marine Corps, and after finishing at the top of his class at The Ba-

sic School in Quantico, VA, Travis was assigned to 1st Reconnaissance Battalion, I Marine Ex-

peditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif. with whom he deployed to Iraq for his first tour of duty.

In 2006, Travis was selected, as an experienced Iraq War veteran from 1st Recon Battalion, to become part of a military transition team (MiTT) with 10 other Marines that would train and partner with an Iraqi Army Battalion in Fallujah, Iraq. On April 29, 2007, 1st Lt. Travis Manion, his fellow Marines and Iraqi Army counterparts were ambushed while searching a suspected insurgent house in the Al Anbar province of Iraq.

Leading the counterattack against the enemy forces, Travis was fatally wounded by an enemy sniper while aiding and drawing fire away from his wounded teammates.

Travis Manion made the ultimate sacrifice that day. His selfless actions allowed every member of his patrol to survive. For his actions, Travis was awarded the Silver Star and Bronze Star with Valor. His legacy continues to grow through the work

Congratulations to Athens High’s Gentry Wolfe for signing a volleyball scholarship with Union University in Jackson, Tennessee. The school is Division II in the Gulf South Conference.

The Limestone Hammers started play July 14, in the 14-year-old division of the Dizzy Dean World Series in Southaven, Mississippi, with a 24-3 win over Germantown. Your mother was right, breakfast is the most important part of the day. Most of us (I’m guilty too) skip breakfast, or just grab a coffee loaded with sugar and cream, or a sugary sweet pastry.

We need protein to start or day, aka brain food. I know when I start my day with sugar, by mid-morning, I have a headache and I’m starving. I find myself looking for anything I can find to curb my appetite until it’s time for lunch. These little

egg muffins are not only delicious, but also very good for you.

They store beautifully in the fridge and re-heat like a dream.

Kids love them, so that makes mom loves them. Have them for breakfast, have them with a salad for lunch, have them at night for supper. Feel free to add whatever meat, cheese, or veggies that your family enjoys. Start your day right with these delicious little bites of protein.

Ham and Cheese Egg Muffins What You Need:

½ cup shredded cheddar cheese 6 slices of deli ham, finely chopped 8 large eggs 3-4 green onions diced finely ½ tsp onion powder ½ tsp garlic powder ¼ tsp black pepper ½ tsp salt

Directions:

Preheat oven to 375⁰F. Prepare a 24-cup mini muffin pan with cooking spray.

Toss cheese and ham together in a bowl; distribute evenly between the 24 prepared muffin cups.

Beat eggs, onions, onion powder, garlic powder, and pepper together with a whisk in a bowl; pour in equal amounts over ham and cheese in muffin cups.

Bake in preheated oven until tops turn light golden brown, about 12 minutes. Remove egg muffins from the muffin tin with a spoon.

Is Donald Trump Oliver Warbucks?

by Rosemary Dewar As cheeky as it sounds, it is quite accurate. Donald Trump is Oliver Warbucks with very few exceptions. The entire cast of the film Annie may take this as an insult, but they shouldn’t. In 1982 Annie was a smash hit, and the ideals of diversity, self-determination, family, and American exceptionalism are affirmed throughout the film. Oliver Warbucks is a patriarch of sorts. He is loud, confrontational, and stubborn, while surrounding himself with some highly competent people. He trusts them with his life, no matter their gender or ethnicity. Donald Trump is all those things with the exception of his previous open philandering, tariff hiking, and infrastructure plan. Like it or not, the parallels are entertaining and inspire reflection.

Our introduction to Oliver Warbucks is astringent. Soon after Annie has been plucked out of poverty and carried to his estate, Warbucks’ arrival is met with strict attention and snappy energy.

His secretary, Grace Farrell, begins listing off the provisos of the day, and says, “President Roosevelt called three times.

He said it was urgent.” He responds, “Everything's urgent to a Democrat.”

Much hasn’t changed from the mid-1930s, in that regard.

He's proof that the American system works, and the Bolsheviks don't want anyone to know.” Now, compared to dealing with Antifa, the constant altercations promoted by the Social Democratic movement is difficult to ignore.

President Trump, his staff, and his supporters often are met with animus and verbal harassment.

As the story continues, once Annie has warmed the heart he always had, Oliver wishes to adopt her. Annie is grateful, but refuses for the moment, in order to find her birth parents. In an effort to help,

Warbucks finally has a meeting with President Roosevelt and takes Annie with him. Warbucks arrives at the White House in a private helicopter.

President Roosevelt says, “Aren't Republicans ostentatious?”

While President Roosevelt attempts, again, to sell The New Deal, Warbucks stops him by saying, “The New Deal is badly planned, badly organized, and administered. You don't think your programs through. Think what you're going to do to the economy in the long run!” Roosevelt replies, “I want to feed them and pay them. Not much, but enough so they can be proud to be Americans.”

Warbucks responds, “It's mistaken foolishness. Bighearted and empty-headed…Who's going to run it?” Roosevelt says, “I was hoping you would.” Well,

Donald Trump didn’t just “run a program,” he decided to run the whole country by becoming president.

Could you imagine how better off we’d be if Oliver Warbucks was President during the Great Depression instead of FDR? It would have been marvelous.

Not an ill word was shared between FDR and Oliver Warbucks, and they committed to find a way to work together. Could you imagine Annie’s life if Oliver never made his millions? She’d be stuck in a fatherless, motherless hole, and oppressed by a bitter woman. The entire scenario would have been disastrous.

Because President Trump is combative, boisterous, and unseemly, our culture is doing everything within its grasp to make certain he irrevocably fails. I could not imagine a drearier fate

for our nation. If Oliver Warbucks can manage to do some good by the people around him, can we not be inspired to do the same with the few peo- i ple around us? Although g President Trump’s presentation is not as polished and appropriate as I would prefer him to be, I can muster gratefulness for what he has been able to accomplish thus far.

President Trump ought to take a few more economic cues from Oliver Warbucks. Other than that, Trump should avoid failure at the hands of his foes in any way he can.

His effectiveness not only depends on it, it demands it.

For some, I may have ruined this musical by making this comparison.

As for me, I can’t help but observe the similarities, lift up my chin, and grin.

How Much Exercise Do Humans Need To Be Healthy?

It is well documented that regular exercise produces longer, better, and healthier lives, reduces anxiety and depression, increases our energy, and boosts our self-esteem. People who are fit miss less work, and have an increased level of productivity. So, in order for people to experience the health benefits listed above, just how much and how often should they exercise?

First, it needs to be understood that all physical activity is beneficial, not just that which is experienced at the gym or as a weekend warrior. In other words, vigorous activities like cleaning the house or mowing the lawn are as good as playing racquet ball or running. While cleaning the house may not be as much fun, knowing that it does the body good might just make it

easier to stick with until it’s finished.

Adults will experience most of the desired health benefits when engaging in a consistent schedule of 2 hours and 30 minutes per week of moderate-intensity physical activity, such as brisk walking or raking the leaves on the lawn in the fall. It has also been found that dividing workouts into several 10-minute sessions is just as effective as one long one.

Of interest lately has been the discovery of the benefits of HIIT, or High Intensity Interval Training. This means that you go “pedal to the metal� for shorter bursts of exercise with timed rests in between. It puts the heart into an anaerobic state, which makes it work harder, and gets quicker results. For example, using various HIIT modalities can convert run-

ning or jogging for a total of 75 minutes a week into a regimen that nets the same benefits as walking at a moderate pace for 150 minutes.

If you are breaking a light sweat while exercising and can still talk, your level is considered moderate. If you are working up a good lather and can only say a few words at a time without pausing, your exercise level is considered vigorous.

There is another test that functions as an indicator of moderate exercise, and it is known as the sing-talk test.

You cannot sing at a moderate exercise level, because more muscles are involved in singing than talking but you should be able to continue to talk. Therefore, the intensity is considerate moderate if you are working so hard you cannot sing while moving, but not so

hard that you cannot speak.

Children need more exercise, as well as a higher level of intensity when exercising than grown ups: 1 hour of physical activity each day, largely aerobic will do it. Kids also need

to include games and activities that will strengthen their bones and muscles.

A good exercise schedule for kids would be at least 3 days per week of aerobic activity like bike riding or swimming; 3 days of muscle-strengthening activity like sit ups and push ups; and 3 days of bonestrengthening higher impact activities like running or skipping rope.

Most active kids are able to meet these minimum exercise requirements naturally, and with ease. Popular sports for youth such as soccer or basketball will help to provide the majority of the level of activity needed by children to strengthen the heart muscles and fortify developing bones.

We all go through trials in our life and have often heard that Life is our best experience teacher. I totally agree. If you live in this life long enough, you will truly be taught some hard, and many times harsh, lessons.

Some because we choose not to adhere to others who had been down the same path, and those lessons we just have to learn because it is what God intended to make us stronger. James 1:2-3 says: My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations; Knowing this, that the trying of your faith worketh patience.

It takes great strength and long suffering to realize when we are bent, twisted, turned around, up-rooted from the foundations in life, and that HEALING IS NOT IMPOSSIBLE. You may be asking how you can move from being bent.

Just remember as you are going through your trials

are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing. We will see ourselves become straighter and our actions much clearer when we realize, believe, and trust in the one who is really sustaining us in this life.

Weathering life’s storms is more physically and mentally possible when we are bendable and willing to humble ourselves to allow Christ to be our true guide.

A number of the tribulations we must bear make us feel as if we will never recover, we are broken and have no way of regaining or knowing the life we once knew. It is hard to accept it, but thus the intent of the lesson!

Until Next Time, Be Sincere, Kind and Intentional

What we take from these lessons is how we learn to move forward and allow what has happened to us to help others as they endure similar hardships of life.

Make no mistake, I know this is difficult to do and to even think about when we are going through devastation in our lives.

We say, “I can’t think about others right now, I need to take care of me;” and, yes, of course, we do at that very moment in our lives.

You must first start with self and realize that you are not “broken”- far from it but only “bent.” Being in a state of “bentness” requires you to be flexible and move

by Deb Kitchenmaster Monday, July 23, I sat in a studio waiting for the countdown to begin a thirty minute interview with host Jim Swanner, “ALL ABOUT HORSES,” WKAC 1080 AM radio station, and live streaming on Facebook. This was the first time I’d met Jim, but I must tell you, I felt like I’d known him all my life. It was live radio, so you simply had to ‘go with the flow,’ much like you do when you are with a horse. Also, comparable to how we do in life when we flow with the unforced rhythms of God’s grace.

Something we talked about is how amazing it is what horses do to people or another way of saying that is, it’s amazing what horses cause people to realize about themselves.

Jim shared a story about how one winter he simply was sick. He went out to a pasture and fell asleep sitting on a barrel. When he woke up, he had six horses with their heads down facing him. He had an emotional moment.

Waking to the sensitivity of these beautiful animals looking at you like, “Hey you’re not alone,” is quite touching. Tears were the language of the emotions he was experiencing.

We witnessed these five horses, (5 is the number for grace), single-file do a perfect figure- eight in the corner of the pasture where the car stopped. She looked at me and asked, “What are they doing?” I said, “I don’t have a clue.” What was interesting is what came out of my mouth next. “Someone in the car must need this.” We were not living in the area at the time the news reported about two children found in an apartment. She and her husband adopted these little ones.

They were in the car that day.

At that time I did not have an understanding of the figure eight pattern. It would be years later, when I did my training to become an Animal B.E.S.T. practitioner, that I would understand it to mean ‘crosscrawl configuration’ that causes ‘internal’ thermostats to be reset. Though I

didn’t understand what the horses were doing that day, they did. They instinctively blessed these grown little ones with a ‘reset.’ Talk about standing in awe. That would be saying the least.

Comments were made about how hearing, seeing, ‘healing’ stories bring up emotions. They really do.

Horses stir up emotions inside of us effortlessly.

He mentioned that there have been times when he has cried after discovering something about himself because of interacting with a horse. As we rested in the presence of the Rider of the White Horse, we connected with ‘passion’ to the point that it was like ‘”Wow! Don’t know if I can handle anymore ‘WOW’ moments,” and we laughed.

I told a story about a gal who came out for a group round-pen session. There was a ‘moment’ when I connected tenderly with the mare in the round pen. God reached inside this individual’s soul and healed a wound that she had carried for years, spending thousands of dollars on therapy. The wound was from a broken relationship with her mother. (Thankfully, she wrote me and told me her experience or I would not have been able to share this with you). When she returned to her home from the session, her phone was ringing. It was her mother! Praise God. This was a life-changing experience.

What to Expect from Mental Health Counseling - Part I

Have you ever wondered what mental health counseling was all about? Have you considered talking to a mental health professional, but never knew where to start, or were afraid of being judged? I have heard from so many of my clients who have stated that they wished they would have sought help sooner! I know the stigma of mental illness exists, but I also know that therapy options are available if you are willing to take that first step. Therapy is a broad term, but here it refers to any process or technique that modifies or improves someone’s thoughts, feelings, or behaviors. (And couldn’t we all use some help with this?) As a therapist, my goal is to utilize multiple approaches that provide my clients with the tools they need to enhance their overall well-being.

they know a therapist who specializes in anxiety or depression, or has certification in substance abuse or eating disorders? You can also go to the Psychology Today website, which has a therapist finder section.

These therapists have been screened and vetted, and can be searched by modalities, insurances accepted, gender, age, language, location, and issues addressed.

The American Association of Christian Counselors also has a Find a Counselor tab called Christian Care Connect that lists providers with pastoral, biblical, or Christian-based training. While use of the internet makes your quest much easier, I would caution you about just doing a “yellow-

pages” search. You can find further information on a potential therapist by doing a Google search, checking out the therapist’s website, and looking for a Facebook business page.

Many people don’t realize that their employer may be a resource. Some businesses offer EAPs (Employee Assistance Programs). You can find out if your employer offers this benefit by either contacting your HR department or checking your employee handbook. EAPs generally have contracts with various therapists and therapy practices to provide short-term counseling services. This means that your employer may cover a certain number of sessions

to assist you in working through a “temporary” issue or struggle. I am part of an EAP which provides 6 sessions free to the employee.

An example of a temporary issue might be grief counseling or an adjustmenttype of event. If you are employed at a university, personal counseling is usually provided free of charge.

At Athens State, I work with staff, students, and faculty at no cost, providing short-term therapy services.

And lastly, counseling services are available through your local community mental health centers. In Limestone County, therapists are available through the Mental Health Center of North Central Alabama. In Madison County, therapists are

available through Wellstone Behavioral Health. These agencies provide low-cost services and accept most insurances, but you will probably not be able to choose your therapist.

Once you have selected a therapist, the next step is that big first appointment.

Part ll will address your concerns and uncertainties regarding what to expect from the initial session.

So, let’s say that you have decided to seek help. Before you ever enter a therapist’s office, you need to do your homework. The most important decision you will make is picking the therapist who is right for you. There are many ways to begin your search. Word of mouth is still a reliable option.

A recent survey by the American Institute of Stress found 80 percent of U.S. workers across industries have felt stress in the workplace; nearly half say they could use help dealing with it and 42 percent said their co-workers could use some relief.

To the delight of animal lovers everywhere, awareness of the physical, mental and emotional toll taken by stress is

leading progressive employers to create takeyour-pet-to-work programs. For example, for the past 20 years Purina has encouraged its associates to bring their pets to work, and in a typical week hundreds of dogs and cats enjoy spending time with their owners at the pet food maker's St. Louis campus.

"Pets bring a wealth of benefits - both physical and emotional - to pet owners and their families, so it's no surprise those same benefits also apply to the workplace and employees," notes Dr. Kurt Venator, Purina's chief veterinary offi-

cer. "Whether a pet helps provide a calming sense during a challenging situation or encourages employees to take a walk during their lunch break, here at Purina we experience the benefits of pets at work every day, and want others to as well."

As more and more companies adopt a pets-atwork policy, consider these facts based on a recent Purina report about the many advantages of such programs: * They can benefit health: Pet-employee interaction has been shown to reduce the employees' blood pressure and cho-

lesterol levels in addition to alleviating anxiety. * They can improve employee retention: Sixty-three percent of employees in pet-friendly workplaces say they're very satisfied with their work environments nearly twice as many as those in other workplaces. In fact, respondents rank the option of bringing pets at work as the second most-valuable employee perk - more valuable than free coffee and parking. Overall, three in five survey participants wish their workplace would institute a pet-friendly policy. * They can alleviate loneliness: Eight in 10 employees who can bring pets to work say that activity makes them feel more happy, relaxed and sociable. That's partly because talking about pets can be an ice breaker, making it easier for people to approach coworkers and get to know them better.

* They can promote physical activity: Many employees spend breaks

and lunchtime playing with their pets or taking them for walks, boosting their own aerobic activity at the same time. * They can increase pets' happiness: Rather than staying home waiting for their owners to arrive, pets get to socialize with new people, play with other pets and enjoy more activity. Nearly nine of 10 people in the survey agree that bringing their pets to work strengthens owner-pet bonding.

"Our goal with our report is to continue to raise awareness of the benefits of taking pets to work and to arm employees and employers with insights that can help facilitate petfriendly environments within their companies," notes Dr. Venator.
