As I have been out and about of late, I have heard several variations on the theme of “I am so sick of this,” meaning the cramp that COVID has put on things.

Most goodhearted folks of both genders have put on their “mascara” (the Spanish word for “mask”) and pretty much taken it in stride, with a bit of grumbling along the way. Here in Alabama, we are waiting for another 10 days to see if some of the recommended restrictions can be lifted.

In California, a veteran warned at a heated city council meeting that though he is a vet, loves this country, and has put his life on the line to protect it, “people are starving” and they are not going to tolerate the draconian controls put

on the California citizenry much longer.

Meanwhile, in our own area, as of last week, Madison County had seen a 25% drop in reported COVID cases.

However, it seemed there was not much to celebrate as far as public health officials were concerned, and Elkmont High School has closed temporarily.

Dr. Fauci is out, Dr. Atlas is in, and some Tweeters are suggesting that the president killed his own brother by his COVID commands, or the lack of them. Republicans have been called “plague spreaders,” and Democrats feel that it is racist to even mention Wuhan, (the city where it all began) in connection with COVID, because it happens to be

in China. I am wondering what would happen if the lab had been located in Wabash, Winnetka, Winnipesaukee, or Waco? All the aforementioned sniping has sadly become that to which we have largely become tone deaf. Just another day in Paradise…

But speaking of Wuhan, here is something that should give one a great deal of pause and at least a paltry attempt at head scratching, or banging, if need be. A few days ago in Wuhan, there were raves held at wave parks with celebrators packed in the pools like sardines. They were frolicking in the water with brightly-colored inner tubes, and seemingly not having a care or a mask in the world.

And, just in case you have a different concept of “come on in, the water’s fine,” there is a club in Wuhan called the Space Club that is also packed, and it is not the only one. But wait, wasn’t it just in February that we were being told about metal doors of dwellings being welded shut with the occupants inside, and crematoriums rivaling the production rate of Auschwitz on a busy day? Then, to make things even stranger, China stopped testing in March and Wuhan hasn’t had a reported case of their “hometown Corona brew” since MAY. Well, I suppose it could be argued that if you stopped testing, you might not have any new cases to report, but does any of this seem odd to anyone besides me?

The purpose of this “Pub” is not to make you want to overindulge at any watering hole, violate a recommendation, or endanger a soul in any way; it is just a semiplayful attempt at asking the obvious: What in the Wuhan is going on? We may never know...

The Right Kind Of Flexibility

by Ali Elizabeth Turner As is often the case, Mayor Ronnie came into his office still mulling over the words of the previous day’s sermon; and we started the first part of our time together with him having the chance to take “each one, teach one” out for a spin. The sermon had been about being vulnerable and flexible in the right way, standing firm on principles and values but not becoming a hardened Pharisee. Another way of saying it comes from the old hymn that says, “Have Thine own way, Lord, have Thine own Way/ Thou art the Potter, I am the clay/ Mould me and make me after Thy will/ While I am waiting, yielded and still.” “It’s about being flexible in the right way,” he said, and I added, “It’s not easy, especially as we age.” We talked about the history of revival, that churches can be left out of making history and eventually dying because of not be-

ing “flexible in the right way.”

The mayor showed me a wonderful video that had been produced by the Athens City Schools Foundation to welcome back teachers and students. Once again I was so grateful to be an Athenian -- the video was started by a student who actually prayed for the students and the teachers. I know that would not be allowed in a whole lot of towns, and her sincerity packed a punch. The various kids featured on the video talked about coming together and building a vibrant school community in the time of COVID; and the presentation ended with a spoof. It showed Mayor Marks giving a welcoming speech as well, while Holly Hollman, Annette Barnes Threet, and Amy Gold played the part of

inattentive and mischievous students acting up behind him. It was just the right touch of humor at a time when we could use a good dose of it, and seeing as Mayor Marks spent time in the classroom as a high school

science teacher, I am sure none of their antics seemed unfamiliar.

Various churches have adopted different schools, and this weekend had outdoor prayer meetings where they physically encircled the school building, six feet apart, and then encircled the school with prayer. Kelly’s Studio of Dance had an outdoor prayer meeting for their students, as well as all students and teachers.

“We need to pray for our teachers, students, and parents more than ever,” the mayor said again. He added, “I know we talked about this last time, but we still need to; it’s that important.” We discussed Elkmont High School being closed and having to go online, and

were thankful that they have learned how to be “flexible in the right way.”

We finished up our time talking about the need for people to vote on August 25. Of course, every candidate that is running for Mayor of Athens or for City Council wants to be the one that is elected; otherwise they wouldn’t be running. And, of course, everyone who is running for a position feels that they are the best choice, or again, they wouldn’t be running. “I want people to study the issues, and study the candidates, and get out and vote on Tuesday,” the mayor said. “Amen,” I agreed. Then we prayed, and then it was time for Ronnie to roll.

A Military Mess Up In The Midst Of A Curious Convention

by Ali Elizabeth Turner This past week was the Democratic National Convention, and there were many firsts. It was the first time that the lion’s share of the festivities had been pre-recorded. That included a video endorsement of delegates from each of the 50 states and 7 territories, with a brief statement as to why Joe Biden was the choice of the party for president. While there were beautiful backdrops for each speaker, when it came to the statement from the delegates from American Samoa, there was trouble in paradise. Standing behind the two chief “spokesfolk” were two soldiers in uniform, complete with mask. They said nothing, but thankfully it didn’t take but a moment for ex-military people watching the broadcast to point out on social media that the soldiers in the video were in complete violation of DOD regulations that are hammered into every Coastie, Marine, Sailor, Soldier and Airman beginning in boot camp.

Briefly stated, active duty troops are NEVER al-

lowed to campaign while in uniform, period. They can go to rallies and, of course, they can vote; they can make campaign contributions, but their uniform cannot be associated with any political party because they put their lives on the line to protect ALL political parties. The following is a breakdown of the DOD regulation that discusses what is allowed:

“As a matter of longstanding policy, military service members and federal employees acting in their official capacity may not engage in activities that associate the DOD with any partisan political campaign or elections, candidate, cause or issue,” said the DOD. “Under DOD Directive 1344.10, members of the armed forces who are on

active duty are permitted to express their personal opinions on political candidates, make a monetary contribution to a campaign, sign a petition to place a candidate’s name on the ballot, and attend a political event as a spectator.

“Members on active duty may not participate in partisan activities such as soliciting or engaging in partisan fundraiser activities, serving as the sponsor of a partisan club, or speaking before a partisan gathering,” the DOD added.

“In addition, all military members, including National Guard and Reserve forces, are prohibited from wearing military uniforms at political campaign events.” BINGO! Now, I am going to take a slightly different tack than maybe others will because I had the privilege of living in Iraq amongst service

members during the 2004 presidential election. The contenders for CNC were George W. Bush and John Kerry, and I can assure you that great effort was made on the part of the DOD to see to it that everyone knew what was expected of them and why. We had discussions, for sure, and I was not in uniform, but I needed to be careful to respect the position of those around me. So, in a word, without a word, these two members of the military really messed up. My take on it is not so much that they were used or manipulated, which they may have been, but they were not victims. If 2020 is anything like 2004, they simply knew better.

If that’s true, why they did it anyway is beyond me, and I hope that their COs have the wisdom to deal with them firmly and well.

Just Follow The Blueprint

How are your goals coming for the year? Are you on track or are you like many Americans who have become derailed

by COVID-19? We have already been through a lot, but we have not seen anything yet --especially with the November elections still a few months away. We have just under three months remaining in this year, but the reality is that we still have so much time remaining.

We still have time to improve upon our year, whether it has been good or bad. I think we all need to realize that sometimes we do not have it as bad as what we think.

Typically in any given situation, usually one we would consider to be a bad situation, there

is someone out there that would trade their circumstances for ours. This is very humbling to think about, especially when we start going down the “woe-is-me” road.

I think it is imperative to revisit something I have touched upon before, and it concerns goal setting.

An issue we have in our country is that too many people do not know how to set goals, and they do not know how to follow through to see their goals fulfilled. If the school system would teach more on this and less on common core, we might see a different society. There are a lot of subjects the in which the school system fails us, and goal setting is one of them.

Too often we have peo-

ple who know what they want to accomplish, but they have no concept of how they are going to get there. Can you imagine if a homebuilder was going to set out to build a home but did not have a plan? The house plans are a blueprint, and your life goals are the blueprints for the life you want. The blueprints of a building are crucial for the builder to make sure every measurement is correct, and I think sometimes we fail to realize we are the builder of our lives.

How many people leave their life up to chance?

How many people go about their day without any intentions of bettering themselves? If we started each day with a blueprint for our life and what the necessary steps were to

measure success, what change would we see? In the beginning, I would suspect we would see extraordinarily little success, and this may surprise you. We live in a society that expects results instantly, and with momentous change.

We decide to change a certain aspect of our life but when it takes a little longer than we expected, we get frustrated and give up.

If we would have only kept on the same track and not given up too early, we would have found the success we desire. Instead though, when we are met with a little resistance, we just tuck our tail, roll over, and give up. I am proposing that we make the conscious decision to begin each day with a game plan for what success looks like

in your life. Your definition of success -- what you want to accomplish, what you want to achieve -- is going to be different than mine. However, if you truly take the time to put the blueprint together for your life, eventually you are going to see the positive change.

For instance, look at all the construction being done around us. I know there have been times that I kind of scratch my head while thinking, “What are they doing?” What we do not always see is the big picture. These construction companies have the blueprint; they know what needs to be constructed, what tasks need to be done, and then they work on doing it.

We need to do the exact thing in our lives. We are going to face obstacles, just like how construction workers must overcome the rain. In your life, there will be rainy days, but you cannot let the negatives stop you.

Goal setting is important, but just as important is brainstorming and asking yourself what you are wanting to achieve.

What is the desired result going to look like for you? This is your goal, but then you must think through the steps needed to obtain your goal. This is the blueprint of your life. Next is taking action to build the life you want. It all starts with a plan for what you want to accomplish, and then you must commit to follow through with your decisions.

Meet Lillian Pennington State President of the Alabama Children of the American Revolution (CAR)

It is always wonderful to see our youth get excited about their history, and there is certainly none more enthusiastic than this year’s Alabama CAR state president, Athens’ own Lillian Pennington. Founded in 1895, the CAR is the nation’s oldest and largest patriotic youth organization. Anyone under the age of 22 who is lineally descended from someone who served in the Continental Army or gave material aid to

the cause of freedom in the American Revolution can join. They have three parent organizations, Daughters of the American Revolution, Sons of the American Revolution, and Sons of the Revolution.

The foundation of the organization rests on six basic principles and objectives: To acquire knowledge of American history; to preserve and restore places of historical importance associated with men and women who forwarded

American independence; to ascertain the deeds and honor the memories of the men, women and children who rendered service to the cause of the American Revolution; to promote the celebration of patriotic anniversaries; to honor and cherish the Flag of the United States of America above every other flag; and to love, uphold, and extend the principles of American liberty and patriotism.

But it wasn’t until a trip to the RichardsDAR House Museum where she was served tea out of real china cups that she decided there might be a little more than she thought to this group and decided to get more involved.

Lillian feels it is her duty to show how wonderful our country is, she follows the CAR creed “I believe in the Children of the American Revolution as an organization for the training of young people in true patriotism and love of country, in order that they shall be better fitted for American citizenship. As a descendant of the Founders of my Country, I believe that my birthright brings a responsibility to carry on their work, and that as the boys and girls of 1776 took an active part in the War for Independence, so the boys and girls of today have a definite work to do for their Country. As a member of the Children of the American Revolution, I believe it is my duty to use my influence to create a deeper love of country, a loyal respect for its Constitution and a reverence for its Flag, among the young people with whom I come in contact.”

Along the way, she has held other state offices under her leadership encased with enthusiastic love for God, home, and country. I am excited to be working with Lillian. Her ideas to promote patriotism surpass expectations. John Wade Keyes Chapter DAR supports her wholeheartedly; thus we are extremely proud of Lillian.”

“New normal,” “social distancing,” “we’re all in this together,” “contact tracing” -- we’re all sick of the new buzzwords. Some schools have had to delay or make adjustments to their fall seasons because of virus concerns; but at least sports is getting the chance to start, and I suppose that’s a win in itself.

The Alabama High School Athletic Association released their plan providing guidelines for all fall sports. Football teams could officially begin fall practice on July 27, using the first week for acclimation and tryouts. With plans to begin fall sports on time, the AHSAA's Return to Play "Best Practices" was approved by the Central Board. Executive director Steve Savarese says the purpose of the document is to offer member schools the best practices in order to start the fall seasons as scheduled and as safely as possible. According to the document, “Players, coaches, officials, and spectators may not congregate within 6 feet of a person from another household except to the extent necessary, and only to the extent necessary for players, coaches, and officials to directly participate in the athletic activity.” Spectators must wear a mask or other facial covering that covers the nostrils and mouth at all times while within six feet of

persons from another household. Limited exceptions are allowed, such as for children who have not yet entered second grade and for people with medical conditions that prevent them from wearing a facial covering. State Health Officer Dr. Scott Harris noted that the AHSAA said that Best Practices guidance “was created to mitigate--not eliminate-the risk of COVID-19.”

The memo says schools are “strongly encouraged to establish and follow policies for limiting event attendance in order to comply” with the current public health order, and to require fans to wear facial coverings while entering and exiting the gates, while in the stands, and elsewhere. Dr. Harris stressed that the current public health order applies to schools and school-related events.

In addition, all persons with symptoms and/or with known exposure to a COVID-19 positive case must quarantine

for at least 14 days.

Those who are awaiting test results should also remain at home until they receive results and guidance from their physician, healthcare provider, or the health department.

Having a negative test does not eliminate the requirement for home quarantine when in close contact to a positive case or remaining symptomatic without another diagnosis. Recycling: Is It Really That Hard?

by Ruby McCartney, Plant Manager Athens-Limestone Recycling Center Someone told me recently, while dropping off their recycling, that recycling shouldn’t be this hard. As manager of Athens-Limestone Recycling Center (ALRC). I have said the same thing for years. However, I think the two of us have two different theories on this.

This person (and he was not the first) was upset that he was asked to empty his recycling from the bags into the appropriate bins.

He wanted to just throw in his bag and let someone else empty it for him.

He also didn’t think that he should have to sort his glass by colors. Again, he just wanted to place his bags into the bins and let someone else do this for him.

I understand that at our community collection centers (county trailers), things are mixed together simply because there aren’t

enough compartments in the trailers. However, when those items are brought back to the recycling center, they have to be emptied and sorted, which requires a sorter.

Before Covid-19, there were usually a total of 32 trailers in use for the public across the county, and all of these had to be serviced at least once a week.

Requirements at the Recycling Center haven’t really changed, as we are now enforcing what we have asked and expected from our residents for years. It is sad that someone has to constantly monitor the bins to make sure that residents are using them correctly. As soon as we turn our backs, people will toss something into the bins that they know is not supposed to be in there.

We have slowly been able to accept more items for recycling over the last few weeks, and this has placed an additional strain on the

Plastic requires so much hands-on sorting, and we have always sorted a great deal of plastic. It takes three sorters working 40 hours a week to keep up with the normal volume of plastics sorted and baled at ALRC. When we do begin accepting plastics again, we will enforce the guidelines that have always been in place, but ignored. Acceptable plastics are CONTAINER plastics only and include the following: #1 (water and soda bottles, etc.), #2 (laundry detergent bottles, milk jugs, shampoo bottles, etc.), and #5 (margarine containers, Cool Whip containers, some yogurt containers, etc.). The key word is CONTAINER plastics. There is a recycling symbol on the bottom of most plastic containers with a number inside

the symbol. If the number is not a 1, 2, or 5, please do not include it in your recycling, as it will be thrown into the trash.

We do NOT accept the following for recycling at our facility: kiddie pools, pool liners, plastic lawn furniture, plastic toys, etc. Some of those items may have a #2 or #5 on them, but they are NOT recyclable at our facility. ONLY CONTAINERS will be recycled. Please dispose of these items properly, as we pay over $7,000 a year to dispose of trash and garbage that residents leave

Recycling doesn’t have to be hard on anyone as long as everyone does their part. To those of you that have recycled correctly and have been appreciative of the services offered, we say a HUGE “THANK YOU!” You are the people that keep us coming into work day after day.

Whew, I’m Tired, Y’all

I read a quote this week that hit me like a frying pan over the head. As a woman, I feel as if I am constantly working with a full plate. Or maybe a better description is one of the plate spinner people at the circus. You know the ones with dozens of plates spinning on little sticks and somehow they are keeping them all spinning and in the air. Well, that’s me but my sticks and plates are starting to fall. I am tired.

You can only “hide” tired for so long. You tell yourself, just keep going, you can rest later. I’ve told myself that a million times. Most of the time that works, but eventually you hit a wall.

How do you let yourself rest when you know there is so much to do? The quote I read this week has let me know, “It’s okay, rest, the world will continue to spin.” She believed she could, but she was tired…so she rested, and you know what? The world went on and it was okay. She knew she could try again tomorrow.— Julianne Bentler DeShayes On Fridays, I am off from my regular 9-5 job. I usually still am awake and up by 7 a.m. This past Friday, I slept until 9:30.

I didn’t wake up until my husband was leaving the house to go to work. I felt so good but also a bit guilty that I had let myself actually sleep. My husband reminded me of the week

I had and assured me that it was okay to sleep. Imagine having to be told it is okay to sleep! How crazy does that sound?

So, yes, we all have a ton going on in our lives. We all have a million plates spinning in the air on tiny sticks. We all need sleep! So don’t be so hard on yourself. Ask for help. Sleep in late. Take a nap if you need to. Take care of yourself!

This week’s recipe is a great way to use up the bumper crop of zucchini that some of us have right now. It’s a five-ingredient, super-creamy summer soup that is just plain delicious. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

Creamy Zucchini Soup Ingredients:

½ small onion, quartered 2 cloves garlic 3 medium zucchini, skin on, cut in chunks 32 oz chicken broth or vegetable broth 2 Tbsp. sour cream Salt and pepper to taste Parmesan cheese to sprinkle on top if desired

Directions:

Combine broth, onion, garlic and zucchini in a large pot over medium high and bring to a boil.

Lower heat and cover. Simmer until tender, about 20 minutes.

Remove from heat and puree with an immersion blender or place in a blender and blend until smooth, small batches at a time. Stir in sour cream.

Top with extra sour cream or parmesan cheese if desired and enjoy.

Thad Guthrie Receives The Prestigious Publix “Mr. George” Gold Coin

tomer satisfaction has attracted employees who love making Publix the place “where shopping is a pleasure,” and no one in our area has fulfilled Mr. Jenkins’ dream more completely than Athens’ own Thad Guthrie, son of Phillip and Lorie Guthrie. Thad is on the customer service team at the East Side Junction Publix store, located here in Athens at 22031 US Highway 72. Recently, he was awarded the “Mr. George” gold coin – one of their most prestigious awards. A “raving fan customer” by the name of Mrs. Mary Johnston called the corporate headquarters to see what Publix could do to honor this young man.

Miss Mary spent her 40-year career as a senior guidance counselor for several schools in North Alabama. For decades she helped students get scholarships and appointments to places like the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis.

She is still involved in the lives of young people and, though long since retired, is currently mentoring two in Huntsville and one in Athens. She knows a gem when she sees one, and in her book, Thad more than earned that distinction. Here is the story of how they first became acquainted through Pub-

Back in March when we were in the early chapters of the COVID Capers, Mary was in need of distilled water and did not want to venture out to shop for it. You’ll recall that the level of uncertainty regarding the disease was high, and as Mary demographically is amongst the most at-risk of our population, she was understandably cautious. She called the customer service desk at Publix and Thad answered. Mary had planned on speaking with someone in management, but when she shared her need for some distilled water, and wondered if Publix had some kind of delivery service, Thad responded, “Well, ma’am, Publix does not have that service as a policy, but may I bring it to you? What else do you need?”

He agreed to bring Mary the water and a few more groceries on her list to her home while he was on his lunch hour. As far as Thad was concerned, taking care of Mary was a simple fulfillment of James 1:27, which says, “Pure religion and undefiled is this, to visit the orphans and widows in their distress…”

That first day, Mary thanked Thad profusely, and over time, grocery delivery became a regular part of Thad’s routine.

“I paid him well, and he became my personal shopper. He is still delivering groceries to my home,” she said. Mary wanted to make sure that Thad was given the recognition he was due.

She contacted the Publix headquarters in Florida, and with the authority gained from decades of advocating for students, she “spoke truth to power” to the

Publix “powers that be.” She regaled them with her experience with Thad and documented for them in detail his integrity, respectfulness, dependability, kindness, and work ethic. They were thrilled to hear about a young person, a college student in addition to being an employee, demonstrating such willingness to go the extra mile. You’ll remember that March was a time when customers were sometimes cranky and panicky, the supply chain had been partially disrupted, toilet paper was scarce, and employees were working long hours to restock everything the moment it came in. Publix is legendary for helping the community in the aftermath of hurricanes and tornadoes, and they shined brightly in the midst of the strange storm in which we found ourselves.

At Mary Johnston’s behest, Publix came up with a plan to bring someone from area management to the Athens store to surprise

Thad and award him the “Mr. George” coin. Thad told me, “They sent Jeff Jeup, the district manager for our area in North Alabama, to give me the coin, and it was like having the CEO come from Florida to do it.”

“How did they pull it off?” I asked Thad. “First they called the management team to the breakroom,” he said. “Then they paged me over the loud speaker. I had no idea what they wanted,” Thad said.

He went back to the surprise party which included the ceremony, the giving of the coin and a gift card, and of course, a Publix cake. For her part, Mary Johnston told me, “I was really, really proud. Here was the younger generation helping the older generation.”

And we at Athens Now say, “Congratulations, Thad, and thank you for the TLC you have shown to our ‘seasoned treasures’ and all of us!”

Building A Sustainable Lifestyle – Part 1

A sustainable life allows you to make daily, habitual choices in your nutrition and activity, creating a level of health which not only gives you confidence but keeps your body functioning at its peak. True healthy lifestyle is a passionate topic for me, some might even call it my soapbox.

I want to take time to break down my beliefs and methods in order to give full explanation to what a sustainable lifestyle truly looks like. It is much more than having a salad every other meal or spending hours at the gym, and it most definitely does NOT include a laundry list of daily supplements or products to make your world go round. Making results a reality is about knowing how to properly fuel your body, move and challenge your body regularly, and surround yourself with positive influences daily.

This is the first installment of a series outlining and explaining what I not only believe but KNOW to be the components of a sustainable lifestyle. I have followed and constantly improved and educated myself on these theories all my adult life.

Now to be totally clear, this sustainable lifestyle does not come without sacrifice or hard work, especially in the beginning.

Creating new habits is difficult at best, but once achieved, becomes second nature. Research shows that it takes roughly 20 to 25 days to form new habits and, in my opinion, at least another 30 to 40 to create true lasting change.

First things first! Lasting change in the health habits of your life means that you are willing to put the crash diets completely in the trash where they belong…I’m talking forever! You have to shift your mindset to longevity not just looking good on your beach vacation at the end of the month or fitting into that favorite dress for a party next week.

The quick 10 and 15 pounds of loss on the scale achieved by whatever Pinterest craze you found or the latest and most popular drink or supplement you find scrolling Facebook will do you no good ultimately.

This approach will only do you the favor of returning as a 20to-30 pound gain in just a few weeks as you get back to real life.

your body is not technically losing much if any fat, you are actually losing muscle and maybe some water weight.

The body has to have certain nutrients to function at a basic level daily, and because you are depriving your body of the nutrients it needs, it will seek it out. In order to keep you moving while you are crash dieting, it will go to the muscles to get what it needs to survive, giving you the minimal amount of energy it takes to get through your day. This is why you feel so weak and worn out while fad dieting. The rapid decline in your muscle and loss of “weight” also contributes to undesirable loose skin. When weight loss is done correctly, this is far less likely to happen or be as dramatic.

The kicker is that these choices not only affect your body, they have mental and emotional repercussions as well, such as depression and extreme irritability during and/or after the diet. This crazy rollercoaster

of wacky eating is ultimately not only destroying your body but also your mental state. Cutting out whole food groups or replacing them with a pill or shake will NEVER give the body what it needs and will eventually come to very a disappointing end. By “filling” the body with a shake – even one with “good” ingredients – or altering/fooling the receptors in the body with a pill, you are still not providing the nutrients in the form NEEDED by the body to sustain high-level functioning. In other words, a healthy life has to focus on REAL ingredients and REAL change. Therefore, as soon as you stop these things, the body will go into a “recovery mode” – same as after the crash diet.

This means it will hold onto every single thing you give it in fear of being deprived again, which ultimately causes extreme weight gain and subsequently depression as well. The mental and physical are always

connected.

YES, it will take discipline to eat appropriate amounts of REAL all-natural whole food spaced correctly throughout your day along with cutting out the sugar, alcohol, and drivethru foods. It will take time to get your winning combination and balance, and it may change periodically depending on what stage of life you are in or what goals you have. But I can promise one thing, IF you take the time to correctly manage your food intake and make it a habit, you will feel better and live a more fulfilled life.

I spoke with Lynn Hoefler, the office manager for Complete Construction & Excavation, LLC, which is located at one of the Beasley mini-storage sites. The address is 23578 Hwy 72 E in Athens, just down from Isom’s. Lynn has extensive experience in the construction industry and manages projects and the crews that work them. She also does some of the bidding, and then Marc signs off on it. I could tell while I was there at the office that she enjoys her work, and that it is important to all involved that the job be done right. One of the

ways Lynn is able to help her crew and supervise what is going on is through security technology, which shows what’s going on at all the worksites on a tablet screen. The guys can show her what they are doing and what they may need in order to complete the work on time and under budget.

As is the case with most people involved in all aspects of the construction business in our area, Complete is continually busy and “gettin’ after it” except when we have a lot of rain.

“We don’t mind working in the rain up to a point, but when all there is is mud, we can’t move it. It’s sticky and heavy, and we just have to wait. Then we have to work even harder to get caught up,” Lynn said.

Procrastination or Prudence?

One of the greatest hindrances to effective leadership in non-profits, business, academia, and religious organizations is the tendency for procrastination. Procrastination is often confused with laziness, but this is not always the case. Procrastination is the mindset that delays important tasks and replaces them with others that are more convenient. One virtual leadership resource called mindtools. com defines procrastination as the following: Procrastination usually involves ignoring an unpleasant, but likely more important task, in favor of one that is more enjoyable or easier.

Leaders who procrastinate are often guilty in two areas. They make the mistake of thinking a task is extremely easy and can be quickly dealt with in a short amount of time and they put it off, or they seek to avoid the pain or energy required in the present for the more difficult ones. As a result, opportunities are lost, important details are lost, terrible mistakes are made, and unnecessary pressures are placed upon both themselves and their fellow workers when the deadline edges closer. American entrepreneur Victor Kiam said, “Procrastination is opportunity’s natural assassin.” Additionally, one must not forget the important warning and admonition that “procrastination is the thief of time.” Procrastination

is often a tricky trade-off of present comfort for delayed burdens. John Maxwell said, “Procrastination may relieve shortterm pressure. But it often impedes long-term progress.”

Timing is critical, but procrastination is detrimental. One might ask, “How does one understand whether an action represents procrastination and prudence?”

John Maxwell writes about this very issue. He offers five ways to deter-

1. When missing deadlines becomes a regular occurrence.

3. When you frequently come across old documents and to-do lists that you haven’t missed in weeks or months.

4. When items on your to-do list continually roll over to the next day, week, or month.

5. When items get crossed off your to-do list not because they’ve been completed, but because they’re too out of date to be done.

One of the important lessons of the pandemic is that procrastination is a terrible gamble. The pandemic has taught society something about how times can easily change and how delaying important decisions can be det-

rimental. There are many businesses, non-profits, religious organizations, and educational institutions who had delayed updating and upgrading their online presence and virtual communication systems and had to scramble when the lockdowns occurred. We have learned that it always better to be proactive and a step ahead of the times.

Some scientists and medical experts report that if lockdowns, stay-at-home orders, and the move toward mask wearing had occurred just a few weeks earlier, thousands of lives could have been saved.

Moreover, there are many plans that could have been implemented in 2019 but were unnecessarily delayed until 2020, and the door of opportunity closed due to COVID-19.

If one has developed the habit of procrastination, what are some of the things that can be done to avoid this tendency?

The online leadership resource center called Skills You Need, identifies a few practical tips that can be implemented to escape the procrastination trap.

Notice these five suggestions: • Do it first, then reward yourself with something you’d rather do.

It can also be helpful to do unpleasant things first thing in the morning, when you’re a bit more resilient, and also when you can’t think of a really good excuse.

• Do it more often, not less. If you find your-

self struggling with a task that you feel you ought to do once a week, or twice a week, try doing it every day instead. That way, it will be harder to put off, and you will feel worse if you don’t get it done that day.

• Write it down. It sounds odd, but it’s much harder to ignore a task once you have written it on your to-do list, especially if it’s a list of things to do today. A more extreme version of this is to tell someone else what you plan to do. You can even ask them to call and check whether you’ve done it.

• Arrange to do it with someone else. If you struggle to motivate yourself to go to the gym, or to exercise, or even to take your child out somewhere, arrange to go with a friend. This has two benefits. First of all, you’ve arranged to meet at a particular time, and you will feel bad if you let your friend down. Secondly, we all enjoy things more if we do them with someone else.

• If it will take less than 2 minutes, just do it now. Stop arguing with yourself and just do whatever it is.

So remember, whether it is extremely easy or a highly difficult task, if it can be done, do it now.

You will not regret it and will be glad you acted when you did.

We need a master cleaning plan. This is not a spot check cleaning; get the broom, mop, disinfectant, trash bags, and the Goodwill box.

Secretariat - I’m pretty sure most everyone reading this article has more than likely watched this fabulous movie. This movie is about hope, courage, and heart. One of my favorite parts is when the two gals are focused on the horse trainer’s hat. The owner of the horse (Penny) gets that deep belly laugh that ends with a sigh.

She is asked, “What is it?” Penny responds, “I haven’t laughed like that in a long time; in fact I can’t remember when.” Sometimes, in the midst of seriousness and responsibility, it’s just good to have a deep belly laugh, isn’t it?

Even if it scares a few people! When the pressure to sell the horse, Secretariat, was intense and the risk was high, we see a woman who had the courage to listen to her ‘gut’ and to her horse, breaking Triple Crown records.

The Long Shot – This is with actresses Julie Benz and Marsha Mason. Annie is haunted by the death of her sister, abandoned by her husband, shunned by her mother, and doubted by her daughter. Her love for horses, her work as instructor for young rid-

ers, and her continued interest to master dressage keeps her going.

Behavioral Activation Therapy

“The trick is to make your goals manageable so you don’t set yourself up for failure.”

- Sarah Van De Weert Behavioral Activation Therapy (BAT) is a behavior-based form of psychotherapy rooted in a B.F. Skinner psychological model. But before you dismiss behavior therapy as antiquated or ineffective, give me a chance to share some information on how it works, particularly if you struggle with depression. Behavioral activation is a short-term treatment, as well as a basic coping strategy. When you feel depressed or anxious, you are less likely to do the things you enjoy, or avoid what may be potentially pleasurable activities. As a result, your mood will often worsen, making you feel even more isolated, detached, or anxious. This tendency to isolate increases your risk of depression.

With behavioral activation, you identify specific goals each week and work toward meeting those goals. The goals you set take the form of pleasurable activities, consistent with the life you want for yourself. For example, if you want to become a more compassionate person, you might choose goals focused on volunteering,

helping a friend, or making a donation.

Behavioral activation is designed to increase your connection to positively rewarding activities. When you notice yourself feeling anxious or depressed, you work on an appropriate activity. This teaches you that your behavior can affect your mood.

Of course, the problem becomes when you are feeling low, it is difficult to feel motivated.

There are some ways you can make your behavioral activation more effective. When getting started, a common mistake that people often make is to choose activities that are important to other people. You may find yourself choosing activities that you think you should be doing, rather than what you want to do. When selecting your activities, try to think of what’s uniquely important to you. Ask yourself, “What matters to me?”

“What kind of life do I want to build for myself?” Then come up with specific activities that really mean something to you, and that are about your values and desires. Next, make sure that these activities are specific, and progress is measurable. For example, if you decide your activity is to get organized. What does that mean? What do you want to organize? I realize that when you are

feeling down, it can be difficult to activate your behaviors.

Therefore, you want to make sure that you can see progress quickly. Make a list of activities from easiest to hardest. Then choose a couple of activities that are going to be completed fairly quickly. In doing so, you make sure that you get active, but also don’t stress yourself out too much. Behavioral activation should not become overwhelming or stressful You don’t want behavioral activation to become boring either. Mix it up when it comes to the activities that you choose. You may want to come up with activities from different life areas, such as work, relationships, personal care, and family or friends. The

more variety you have, the more balanced your life will become and the more likely your motivation to continue. If you are finding it difficult to be motivated, you may want to ask others for support. Set up an accountability partner or establish a “contract” with a friend or family member. Let them know about what you hope to accomplish during the week. This person can check in with you during the week and also serve as your cheerleader to increase your motivation. Try to remember to be mindful and present when you are engaging in meaningful activities.

Behavioral activation works best when you fully experience and participate in your chosen activities. You may want to

start off slow with just a few activities, and from there gradually increase the number of activities as your mood improves.

Finally, remember to reward yourself for the progress you make. Recognize your accomplishments. Doing so can increase your motivation to keep moving forward, especially during those times when your mood is down. With one step at a time, you can use behavioral activation to build a more meaningful and fulfilling life.

Now the Mask - Next the Mark

by Roy Williams Are they preparing us for unconstitutional control? Could they be conditioning us for mandatory vaccinations?

This week we learn that several cities including some cities in Alabama are making mask mandatory. When the officials were asked how they were going to enforce the ruling, they had to admit that they weren’t sure at this time.

You hear on the news, the increasing numbers of people testing positive for the coronavirus with almost no mention of numbers of deaths.

Maybe that is because there are fewer and fewer deaths from COVID, and that news simply doesn’t fit their narrative.

Senator Ron Paul reported on July 7: The death count has morphed into the daily “new case” count, as 100,000 tests a day have exploded into 700,000 tests. Is it a wonder cases are increasing?

But what they don’t dare mention is that deaths and even the death rate continue to decline. In fact, the CDC warns that COVID is at the stage where it cannot

even be classified an epidemic due to declining deaths. Still, more masks are required and petty dictators all around are calling for a return to lockdown. Can the truth ever be heard above all the lies?

Yes, they are testing more and more people all the time. But when you take into consideration that the test cannot tell the difference between the coronavirus and the rhinovirus, which is the common cold, how can anyone be sure just how many actually have COVID? Many medical professionals and scientists admit that wearing a mask is no assurance that you will not contract the corona virus, so they tell us to wear it to protect the people we come in contact with. Now we learn that wearing the mask actually causes your oxygen levels to drop, which may make you more susceptible to all viruses.

Dr. Atlas reported that even if someone is infected with the coronavirus only a very small percentage will have any noticeable symptoms.

Then he goes on to say that 99.7% of those be-

low the age of 70 that get the full-blown symptoms will survive.

At this point we should be asking why they are taking such drastic actions over a very weak virus, shutting down the best economy in 60 years. Why are they willing to bankrupt this great nation and make more and more people dependent on government?

Could making the mask mandatory just be a precursor to a much larger plot? Are there people and industries that will profit from scaring the American public into doing what they want us to do?

If they can force all of us to wear a mask, could they be setting the stage for a much bigger step?

Can they make all of us take a vaccine?

Bill Gates, a major contributor to the vaccination industry, has reported that he is confident that they will have a vaccine, very soon, that everyone should be forced

to take. When asked, “How do you enforce it?” he answered, “If you don’t take the vaccine you cannot trade.”

In other words, you must have proof of your vaccination in order to do business. Want to buy groceries, want to use a credit card, want to buy gas, need medical help, need to pay your electric bill? -- Better get the vaccination!

In Revelation, John explains what the end times will look like, including the Mark of the Beast, where it explains that without the Mark no one will be able to trade. In 18:21-24, John explains: “for thy merchants were the great men of the earth; for by thy sorceries were all nations deceived.”

In the Strong’s Concordance (the encyclopedia of the Bible), sorcery is defined as Pharmacia, pharmaceutical, a pharmacist, a druggist, a poisoner. Many theologians agree that what this means is that toward

the end of time, all the nations of the earth will be deceived by Pharmacia.

If you do your research, you may find that Gates and other elitists not only want forced vaccinations for everyone worldwide, but they also have plans to put a chip in the vaccine that will contain all your medical history, including your vaccination records. Maybe they plan to use the coronavirus, that China sent around the world, to begin forced vaccinations.

As for me and my family, we choose not to participate. Only the truth will keep us free.

Hamilton: “The Movement”

by Mae Lewis Quarantine has given me the opportunity to FINALLY watch the musical Hamilton, released for streaming on Disney+. I’ll be honest, that my decision to watch it felt somewhat obligatory. I’m not particularly a fan of rap music, and I despise watching films of live theater. Live theater carries a particular energy which cannot be transferred digitally, and taped live performances fall flat and feel static.

I was also not in the mood to watch what I had heard described as “modern liberalism.” The actors have used their cultural clout to offer political commentary, something I find particularly distasteful. Still, my devotion to the theater compelled me to watch a musical that won 11 Tony Awards

and the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. I’ve become a fan of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s talent, and since I have no plans to travel to Broadway anytime soon, the couch seemed as good an option as any.

I didn’t know what to expect.

“A rap musical about the founder of the federal banking system?”

It’s a terrible pitch.

But 16 Tony nominations?

(The most ever received by a single production, surpassing The Producers, Cats, Fiddler on the Roof, Sound of Music, and every other musical you’ve ever heard of).

Critically speaking, of the elements that make up musical theater: singing, music, choreography, lyrics; Hamilton excels

at them all.

Hamilton combines so many different musical elements: hip-hop, soul, jazz, show tunes, and others, that I forgot about the stuff I didn’t like. The choreography was impressive and imaginative. Lyrically, it is brilliant. Brilliant.

Just. Creative. Genius. (#PROTIP: Watch it with subtitles. You will appreciate the genius of the lyrics all the more).

Historically, it takes a lot of creative liberties- for which Miranda has received a lot of criticism.

But it isn’t meant to be a history lesson. The chief criticism perhaps is that every member of the cast is a person of color, with the exception of King George III. Our collective conscious awareness of the founding fathers

comes through the statues which represent them.

Very WHITE statues. Miranda brings them to live in literal living color.

BUT. The REAL GENIUS of Hamilton is not the music or lyrics or choreography.

It isn’t even found in the story of Hamilton himself (Spoiler alert: the story isn’t really about Hamilton). Miranda uses the life of Alexander Hamilton to tell an American story. The story of a struggle for freedom. The story of a dream of freedom.

The story of a dream of equality.

The real message of Hamilton is passion, and the real takeaway from Hamilton is the spark that it ignites.

Passion, fire, fervour, intensity.

Passion for a dream–a country where “all men are created equal.”

I have never in my life seen a story portrayed with such “unparalleled passion.”

The energy of the actors (and of Miranda himself playing the title role of Hamilton) conveys the zeal of our founding fathers, building something bigger than themselves...a dream of freedom.

Hamilton himself risks (and loses) everything: his career, his integrity, his family and love to show that his COMMITMENT to the American dream is bigger than all of those things.

It will make you weep.

Google “crying over Hamilton,” and you will see it is not an exaggeration. If you love your country, you will be moved. And it will make you ask the question, “Why am I crying over Alexander Hamilton?”

It is transformative. Individually and collectively, we struggle with our own identities, and the identity of our nation. Hamilton brilliantly challenges and fuses these elements.

(Did I mention that LinManuel Miranda is a genius?)

I believe Hamilton has become a cultural phenomenon not just for the spark it ignites in the viewer, but because it removes the historical distance between the founding fathers and the the struggle of our nation TODAY. If you feel left out of today’s news stories, Hamilton will fill in the blanks for you.

Even if you are against the artistic expression of multicultural patriotism, I encourage you to watch it. If not for the entertainment value, watch it for the historical value: the history of a cultural phenomenon we are watching unfold RIGHT NOW. “This is not a moment, it’s the MOVEMENT.” Even if you choose to stand on the sidelines and not participate in the current political narrative, at least do yourself the favor of knowing what it is you are missing.
