Freedom Summer, Fifty Years Later I was a kid of eleven when what has come to be known as “Freedom Summer” caused the Deep South to make history, and on some fronts, not exactly in a manner that could be considered positive. There are numbers of ways the summer of ’64 can be viewed, as is always the case with a controversial period in time. There is no greater challenge for a people who have had seasons of intensely “negative PR” to “just let the story be the story.” I think it’s accurate to say that the 700 students who boarded those buses to make sure people could register to vote were willing to put their lives on the line. In most people’s books, that is considered a virtue, even if they don’t agree with the premise of young private citizens from outside the state being the ones who did what they could to help make and then uphold the law that would ensure that everyone could vote.

Alabama Public Television recently broadcast a retrospective multi-episode documentary that interviewed several of the original Freedom Summer collegekids-now-grandparents, both black and white, who faced down bus bombings and the inside of jail cells.

It was refreshing, candid and complicated. For me personally, it reminded me of the idealism that was so prevalent that summer, something I remem-

ber well, and hope has not been too badly bludgeoned now that I am the regular recipient of AARP’s latest mailbox ad campaign.

A couple of weeks ago I was chatting with Mayor Marks about the possibility of doing a “Pub Point” on Freedom Summer, and he encouraged me to write it. I asked him what, as a young man, caused him to change his thinking about all that was going on. At the time

he was about the same age, 19 or 20, but unlike them, he sported a flat top haircut.

He paused for a moment and said thoughtfully, “I think it was the times, and I think it was just time.” I think that’s a fair assessment of what most often happens amongst what the law refers to as “reasonable people” when they are confronted with injustice.

For me, though, the proof of just how far we have come occurred recently at the Farmer’s Market, and it was courtesy of jazz great Dave Brubeck, albeit indirectly. I have an

He was at the Market at the same time I was. He happens to share my last name, and to my knowledge we are not kin. I refer to him as BFAM, which stands for “Brother From

Another Mother.” He calls me SFAM, the only difference being the S, which is for sister. I had played for him a Voxer audio clip on my iPhone of some friends who have a music school in Texas. The clip was a total improv jam session, starting off with a fierce Miles Davis vibe, and then beautifully resolved into the familiar Brubeck theme song, “Take Five.” That is one difficult piece of music to play, largely because it is in 5/4 time, and in my view, has only a few contenders for being consid-

ered the greatest jazz piece ever written.

Turns out it is one of his favorites, too, so I told him I would go ask Cool Bone, the brass jazz group that was playing that day at the Market, if they could do it.

Perhaps that was unfair of me, because it is tricky, and they hadn’t had a chance to practice it. We both greatly appreciated their “on the spot” effort and thanked them for it. Next to where the jazz band was playing was a voter registration booth, always a sign that democracy has not utterly died despite the best efforts of a few. Then we talked about just how cool it is that it is 50 years later, we are standing next to each other in the market, listening to live jazz, and people of all colors are being given the chance to vote without fear, with no one giving any of it a second thought. I have already chronicled from firsthand experience how careful the Probate Judge’s office is to protect our rights to vote, but from where I stand, it’s 50 years later and it’s Athens, Alabama. We have come a long way, and still need to get down the road a piece.

The FIFA Facebook Funeral

by Ali Elizabeth Turner Sean Carmeli was born in Texas, the son of a couple who had come to the US from Israel and settled in South Padre Island. As is the case with many Jewish people all over the world, he felt a fierce attachment to the land of Israel, and after graduating from high school, he joined the Israeli Defense Force. It is possible in Israel to serve in two armies, and we owe a huge debt of gratitude to all the dual citizen IDF members who have helped us and our allies around the globe. By necessity their presence is rarely acknowledged, but nonetheless needs to be honored.

Sean was killed by Hamas, which was suggested recently by Nancy Pelosi as actually being a “humanitarian organization.” He was on patrol in Gaza, and his transport was hit by an anti tank weapon. Two days later, his IDF military funeral was held on Monday, July 21 at 11 pm to accommodate his parents’ arrival from the US. This

was also just a week after the last championship FIFA World Cup game, the Olympics of the soccer world, and “soccer spirit”

was running high. Sean was a huge fan of the Haifa Maccabi, a soccer club considered one of the best in the land, and the Maccabi were determined to see that his funeral would be well attended.

ternet-based technological wonder that can be used for great good or evil. Team members got a hold of everyone they

could think of, the Facebook message went viral, and by 11 pm that night, more than 20,000 people showed up at his funeral.

Strangers attended, the Israeli Ambassador to the UN went, traffic was jammed beyond belief,

and there were so many people pressed next to each other, there were even those who needed some medical attention.

This is something not uncommon at soccer events.

Various people were interviewed and asked why they came. One woman, who did not know Sean and did not specifically identify herself as a Maccabi fan, said the following: “It’s shocking and your heart hurts for the family. This situation was

forced on us. All we want is to live here in quiet and they [Hamas] don’t let us.

When I see the image of all the people here, it makes me proud to be a part of this nation.”

Hamas recently invaded a kibbutz in Israel and killed five soldiers. Their intent had been to attack civilians in the kibbutz, and the way they got there was through an extensive tunnel system.

Why am I bringing this up? Because currently on our own nation’s southern borders there are tunnels that go on for miles that are being used to run drugs and people into our country. Texas National Guard troops have been told by the President to back up several miles from the border, and the Mexican government is protesting that they are near the border at all. Radical Islamists look upon us as the Great Satan, and by their own admission don’t mind teaming up with the drug cartels in order to do their worst. You connect the dots, but in the mean time, let us celebrate that Facebook was used for good, and a fallen soldier was given the respect he deserved.

The Blessing (?) Of Budgets

The weekend had been the 26th CASA mud volleyball tournament, and Mayor Ronnie had been a ref. Despite his best efforts to dodge the various deluges of mud when it flew in his direction, he got happily muddy, too, even his glasses. The tourney raised $10,000, drew 90 teams, and there were even some teams that had to be turned away. The discussion of the topic of “mudslinging” ended up being a nice segue to what can occasionally inspire some emotional fisticuffs, and that is the budget for the City of Athens for the next fiscal year.

“We are within 60 days of closing out the budget for 2014,” he said. The final report will be finished in November. Annette Barnes and Kent Lewter are working on the general fund, wastewater and gas budget,

“We are in the process of meeting with department heads who are hammering out their budgets,” he said, and then the City Council will meet in mid August to approve them, line item by line item. The funds are then released on October 1st.

year,” he said, “with a million to 1.2 million dollar surplus in the bank.” He then added, “The General Fund is always squeezed tight, but we try to keep it conservative and still find ways to buy things like police cars and street paving.”

This year we were able to buy two police cars, and there is about $750,000 set aside for street and road repair. “About $600,000 of that came from an ATRIP grant, and though torn up streets are annoying, they are a sign of progress,” he added. We chatted about all the things upon which our city needs to spend money, and how to do it well. “The biggest challenge for any mayor is managing the money,” he said. “Everybody’s got a different idea of what is important and how to spend it, and finding a balance in all of it is tough,” he said. Thank God the man enjoys a challenge.

day before had been the 45th anniversary of the first Apollo moon landing, an event which put our area on the map forever. We talked about it some. I asked him, “Where were you when they landed?” “In Vietnam,” he replied. “The technology was such that I didn’t even find out about it until two weeks after the fact.”

He then asked me the same question. With perhaps a touch of chagrin I told him I was at a “Last Rising of the Virgin Moon” gathering that was for the purpose of mourning the event. He stood and looked at me for a bit as if he was trying to figure out what to say, and then he asked, “Ali, just how much dope DID you smoke?” “Enough,” I replied. I thanked him again for being willing to protect people like I used to be.

And then we prayed.

School Time Or Fun Time? I Guess There Will Be Some Of Both!

School? We still have great events to enjoy, like the Piney Chapel American Farm Heritage Days on August 1st & 2nd. This great 2-day event has been taking place for 22 years. If you haven’t gone, you are missing out on a load of fun. You’ll know you are there when you see thousands of tractors in all colors and sizes on 20147 Elkton Road before you reach Piney Chapel Elementary School headed north.

This event celebrates life on the farm and the preservation of antique engines, tractors and other equipment. They

have events like the Parade of Power, Fast Crank Competition, Slow Races, and the Ladies’ Skillet Throw. The kids can take a chance with the Pedal Pull. On Friday Aug 1st, you can take a tractor ride to Elkmont on the Richard Martin Rails to Trails and enjoy a hotdog when you get there.

The event opens at 7AM on Friday, with the tractor ride at 10AM. Live entertainment will begin at 5:30PM. Come out to have great pinto beans & cornbread, along with other tasty concessions.

On Saturday morning, you can have biscuits for breakfast! Admission is only $5, with children 10 and under admitted free of charge.

With agriculture being big in Limestone County, as well as having a large equine population, many will be supporting Ardmore in their 22nd Annual Police & Reserves Rodeo. The rodeo is also being held August 1st & 2nd. Ardmore presents their event at John Barnes Park, 30510 Ardmore Ridge Road, Ardmore, TN. You are invited to come and support the Ardmore Police Department and Reserves while enjoying this excellent family activity.

The Col. Sam Gibbons Walking Horse show will give it one more try to finally hold their event

You will weaken the tree and stunt its growth. It eventually will quit putting out sturdy growth that won’t even support the blooms. Then the tree will become susceptible to many kinds of fungus and rot. Only trim what really has to be trimmed for shape and thinning so sunlight can get to the inside of the tree.

If you trim the tips after they bloom out, this will promote growth and new blooms, giving you a healthy pretty, bloomfilled tree. Remember, a little fertilizer or compost won’t hurt.

Do You Have A Heart For The Hungry?

According to Alabamapossible.org, the poverty rate in Limestone County is nearly 13%.

The census bureau lists Limestone County as having 88,845 residents.

That means more than 11,000 of our residents are living below the poverty line.

With this in mind, a small group of people had a vision to create a garden maintained by the community with a purpose to provide fresh produce to those in our community suffering from hunger. All food grown at the gardens is given to the Limestone County Churches Involved (LCCI) Food Pantry for distribution.

Pantry are encouraged sign up. You pick the date and the time you wish to volunteer.

Long-term commitments are not necessary. We’ll provide the tools and instructions.

Over 1,000 hours of volunteer time have been given to plan, prepare the grounds, build the raised beds, create hugelkultur beds and build structures. One thousand hours of sweat and hard work. All freely given, all for the purpose of helping those in need.

Vegetables and fruit-bearing shrubs were planted and a few volunteers, with little experience, began watering, weeding, and caring for the plants. It became evident that we all had much to learn about successful gardening.

Oreo Cake

What you will need:

1 package (18.25 ounce) Devil’s Food chocolate cake mix 2 (1 ounce) squares Baker’s Semi-Sweet Chocolate 1/4 cup butter 1 package (8 ounce) Philadelphia Cream Cheese, softened 1/2 cup sugar 2 cups thawed Cool Whip Whipped Topping 12 Oreo Cookies, coarsely crushed Directions 1. Heat oven to 350 degrees F. 2. Prepare cake batter and bake in 2 (9-inch) round pans as directed on package. Cool cakes in pans 10 min. Invert onto wire racks; gently remove pans. Cool cakes completely.

3. Microwave chocolate and butter in small microwaveable bowl on HIGH 2 min. or until butter is melted. Stir until chocolate is completely melted. Cool 5 min. Meanwhile, beat cream cheese and sugar in large bowl with mixer until blended. Gently stir in Cool Whip and crushed cookies.

4. Place 1 cake layer on plate, spread with cream cheese mixture.

Top with remaining cake layer. Spread top with chocolate glaze; let stand 10 min. or until firm. Keep refrigerated.

The third segment is a comment, question and an-

swer segment. This project is presented through a grant from the Alabama Humanities Foundation, the state affiliate of the National Humanities Foundation.

Ms. Tutwiler is the author of the State song, entitled simply Alabama. In her lifetime, she was an advocate for

Discussion Dr. Tina Naremore Jones, Dean of Educational Outreach at the University of West Alabama will lead a discussion after the program. Cost to attend the event is free. Nestle Toll House Café: Cookies, Creativity And Classes

freshly baked chocolate chip cookies filling the house, the pleasure of eating them while they are still warm and gooey, and then draining a glass of cold, fresh milk to finish them off. The cookies of our memories were no doubt created with love, eggs, sugar, butter, flour, and the contents of that iconic yellow bag that since 1939 has held what is more technically known as “toll house morsels.” If you are too busy to bake, you can still get that loving taste and more at the Nestle Toll House Café, located at 1260 US Hwy 72 E in Athens, next to Starbuck’s and across from Chick-fil-A. Last year Sascha Easterling and her husband Chad purchased the franchise outlet from Pat Madsen, and, as Sascha says, “took it on as a family thing.”

Sascha had worked at the shop for around a year, learned the business, and found a venue where her creativity could be nearly boundless. The Easterlings are fascinating folks—Chad is a Software Engineer at Dynetics and an adjunct professor of computer science at Athens State. Sascha is an Athens State grad, having majored in Graphics Art and minoring in Art History. She has also taught classes at ASU’s Center for Lifelong Learning.

In addition, they have a ten year old adopted son from Albania who has been a part of their family since he was 2 ½, and they are all involved in making the shop hum. Most of the staff was able to join them when they took over in August of 2013, and every time I deliver papers there, I am warmly greeted.

Though Sascha is not formally trained in Art Therapy, she has done it for years, having volunteered at places such as Huntsville Hospital on the Pediatric Oncology unit. Her favorite students were kids battling cancer, and she was often told that they could not wait until she came back. She knows and demonstrates the power of art in the “healing arts.”

She is also a talented musician, and I had the great pleasure of singing with her and Barry Kay at the Center for Lifelong Learning at one of their soirées. She designed the cover art for Barry’s CD entitled, Jude, and let’s just say the girl has mad skills.

er, musician, artist, and woman of faith,) is that of art teacher. She teaches art classes to kids and adults right there at the shop.

Some of it is cookie art, as well as cookie cake decorating, but she teaches classic drawing and paint-

ing using a number of modalities.

“Right now we are having summer camps,” she said, referring to the classes, “and during the year we have classes every third Friday of each month. They are held at 6pm, so adults can come, too.” I then asked, “So, why, when there are art teachers all over Athens, should I come to you?” She smiled and said, “You get a fresh baked cookie and a drink, in addition to your class.

For the pre-school Thursdays, (which are held 10-noon,) you get to decorate your own cookie and then eat it!” Sascha also wants people to know that Nestle Toll House Café hosts birthday parties, for $15 a guest.

Nestle Toll House Café in Athens recently received the Best Bakery in Athens Award by the Athens News Courier.

Also, Groupon, (the online coupon service) noted that they were “impressed by the level of customer service.”

Her cookie cakes are works of art, and currently the most favorite is the charming snowman named Olaf from the Academy Award winning animated feature, Frozen. “I put a lot of passion into my work,” says Sascha, and the display cases in the shop are filled with the proof. While I was conducting the interview, one of her friendly staffers took out a fresh batch of cookies from the oven, and given the chance I would have been tempted to eat the whole pan. “I get a lot of return customers,” she said, and I can see why. Kindred Spirits, a whimsical and unique gift store, has been a venue for local artisans and handmade crafters in Athens since 2011. Pam recently relocated her store to the charming historical town of Elkmont and has been welcomed with open arms by the local residents, her long-time “raving fan” customers, as well as those who are just discovering the town of Elkmont. building that houses Kindred Spirits is referred to locally as the “little hospital building.”

If not the first, this building is one of the earliest hospitals in Limestone County. The gentleman that currently owns the building tells the story that his father had his gall bladder removed there in the 1920’s.

Pam carries everything from locally made soap, to different styles of jewelry, to farm tables made from repurposed barn wood, and everything in between. Preventing Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis can be a terrible disease, but the good news is that it is preventable and here are some steps you can take to decrease your risk.

Diet:

•Low fat and skim milk, nonfat yogurt, and reduced-fat cheeses are healthy sources of the calcium that you need to build strong bones. Fortified milk products also have vitamin D, which is needed for proper calcium absorption.

•Canned sardines and salmon, eaten with their bones, are also rich in calcium. Mackerel and other oily fish are rich in

vitamin D. •Leafy green vegetables have lots of calcium, plus the potassium and vitamin K you need to block calcium loss from bones.

Fill up on broccoli, bok choy, kale, Swiss chard, and turnip greens.

•Eat soy products. Substitute soy flour for regular flour in recipes from pancakes to cupcakes.

Eat roasted soybean “nuts” instead of peanuts. Look for soy cereal and soy cheeses. If you drink smoothies, use soy milk.

•Reduce your protein intake. High protein intake can raise your excre-

tion of calcium. Limit yourself to the RDA of 50 grams daily for women, 63 grams for men.

•Limit caffeine. Limit your caffeine intake to three cups of coffee a day, since caffeine causes the body to excrete calcium more readily.

Exercise:

Regular weight-bearing exercise will help stop bone loss and may build bone as you age.

Improving your posture, balance, and flexibility, helps reduce your risk of falls that can break bones. Exercise for a minimum of 30 minutes three times a week. Try walking, running, weight lifting, stair climbing, tennis, volleyball etc. Swimming won’t do or water aerobics alone won’t work; your bones and muscles must work against gravity for a bone-building effect.

If you do not know where to start, talk to a personal trainer to get some advice. Visit your local gyms for a tour of their facilities. Look for classes in your community at churches, senior centers, boot camps, etc.

Lifestyle:

•Quit smoking. Among 80-year-olds, smokers have up to 10% lower bone-mineral density, which means twice the risk of spinal fractures and a 50% increase in risk of hip fracture. As

a matter of fact, one in eight hip fractures in women is linked to longterm cigarette use. Also, fractures heal slower in smokers, and are more likely to heal improperly.

•Avoid too much alcohol.

Alcohol prevents your body from absorbing calcium properly. Limit yourself to one drink a day for women and two drinks a day for men.

•Don’t let depression hang on. Depression causes your body to produce cortisol, a stress-related hormone that saps minerals from bones.

So see a doctor or therapist for depression treatment.

Feeling Loss Is there life after death?

Is there really a God? Do animals have a spirit? I say “Yes” to all these questions. Here are my reasons for believing as I do.

In the early 1980’s, my Pee Paw was dying from brain cancer. As I have stated in a previous article, he was known for helping dogs in need. During this difficult time he had seven dogs. Two were elderly and my Mom decided to take them to the veterinarian to have them put to sleep. She told no one what she had done and when she returned to look after Pee Paw, she thought she had done the right thing. Anyone who has seen what brain cancer can do to someone understands that most people with

this diagnosis usually have dementia or some form of memory loss and even can relive moments from their past.

Well, Pee Paw was reliving a moment in his life while my Mom was looking after him and suddenly he became quiet and looked at my Mom with an angry look. He then asked her, “Rickie, how many dogs do I have?” She replied, “Seven Dad.” He stated, “No, you are lying.”

Mom said, “No Dad, you have seven.” He then replied, “Rickie, you are lying because Trouble and Suzy are standing by the door telling me you murdered them and they are waiting for me now.” Needless to say Mom was spooked and quickly left Pee Paw’s glaring look.

When I was thirteen, my dog, Little Girl passed away and I grieved for her so badly. I lay in my bed for a long time and cried. For two weeks I grieved for her. One night I dreamed I was in front of the house we were living in at the time in Letohatchee,

AL. I was sitting on a splitting log and Little Girl appeared in front of me. She ran to me barking and jumped into my arms, licking my face. The joy I felt was so strong that when I awoke I did not grieve anymore.

Recently, last November, we lost Maggie.

She was four years old and bone cancer had set into her right leg.

We made her comfortable after her diagnosis and tried several homeopathic remedies in hopes of beating this disease. A few days before Thanksgiving, she died in the loving arms of her family. Once again, I grieved over her very hard. About two weeks later, I dreamed

she was there in our home wagging her tail and loving all over me and her siblings. It was like she was letting me know that she was fine and that she would see me again.

Ever hear of the dogs that grieve over the loss of their Pet Parents?

How about stories of soldiers dying overseas and being returned in a casket with their dog at the funeral lying by them? I have seen news articles where dogs would be grieving over their Pet Parent at a funeral. There are several stories out there that are true about dogs and their feelings. To have no soul or spirit would leave them as blank as a rock or an inanimate object.

If there are any unbelievers among us who read this, it is my hope to help them realize that they will see that Canine Family Member again when we are done with this life. One more thing, if there are no dogs in Heaven, then I don’t want to go there.

My piece of Heaven is with my “babies”.

“Remember to love your dogs because they love you. Maybe not the way you want them to, like chewing up your favorite shoes or what not, but that is just love chewing. Be thankful for the time you have with them always.”

August Is National Breastfeeding Month

As is my usual habit, I have picked topic based upon national health observances that are getting media attention each month. August just so happens to be National Breastfeeding Month. In addition, August 1st-7th is World Breastfeeding Week. World Breastfeeding Week has been celebrated for 22 years, and is recognized in over 175 countries around the globe. The mission of the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action is to “focus and facilitate actions to protect, promote and support breastfeeding.”

According to a call to action supported by the Surgeon General of the U.S., breastfeeding is “one of the most highly effective preventive measures a mother can take to protect the health of her infant and herself.” This breastfeeding campaign, which is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and its goal is to “empower women to commit to breastfeeding by highlighting new research showing that babies who are exclusively breastfed for six months are less likely to develop ear infections, diarrhea, and respiratory illnesses and may be less likely to develop childhood obesity.”

In many states in the U.S., breastfeeding is no longer the choice of new mothers for meeting the nutritional needs of their newborns. This is especially true in Alabama. The national average of women who have ever breastfed is 76.5%, while Alabama reports only 60.4%. This number is lower in only 4 other states, 2 of which are in the “Deep South” and includes Mississippi (50.5%) and Arkansas (57.7%). In addition, the number of Alabama mothers still breastfeeding exclusively at 3

and 6 months is low at 23.5% and 11.9% respectively.

So why is breastfeeding so important? Is it really any better for your baby than pre-packaged formula at the grocery store? With so much information readily available at our fingertips and the click of a few buttons on the Internet, it can get overwhelming to find good sources of information.

There is always “new research” coming out on every topic under the sun, and breastfeeding is no exception. So let’s take a look at what some of the leading scientific researchers in the U.S. have to say.

•Mutual of Omaha found that health care costs for newborns are three times lower for babies whose mothers participate in the company’s employee maternity and lactation program.

Why isn’t breastfeeding more common, then? Below are some key barriers, as discussed by the U.S. Surgeon General3:

•For both employers and employees, better infant health means fewer health insurance claims, less employee time off

•Lack of Knowledge: While breastfeeding is considered a natural skill, some mothers may need education and guidance. Providing accurate information can help prepare mothers for breastfeeding.

•Lactation Problems: Sometimes babies have a tough time getting good at breastfeeding and an experienced lactation specialist can provide assistance. Most of these are avoidable if identified and treated early, and need not pose a threat to continued breastfeeding.

•Poor Family and Social Support: Fathers, grandmothers, and other family members strongly influence mothers’ decisions about starting, continuing, and accommodating

modate the demands of everyday life while protecting their infants’ health and can be accomplished at no risk to their own modesty.

•Employment and Child Care: Employed mothers typically find that (1) returning to work and (2) lack of maternity leave are significant barriers to breastfeeding.

•Health Services: Health care systems and health care providers can improve mothers’ breastfeeding experiences by pursuing and obtaining the training and educational opportunities they need in order to fully support their patients.

Thoughts on Thieving

Shoplifting is a nationwide problem, costing retailers approximately $13 BILLION annually.

In other words, that is over $2.7 million a day.

This issue affects us all

by causing higher prices for the products we purchase.

Why would a person want to take something and not pay for it? Well, some people look at this as giving themselves a reward, which gives them a temporary lift or high. They have this belief that it will help them cope with other underlying problems. There was a study done by a major credit card company, and they found that shopping was second only to dining out as a way for people to reward themselves. Therefore, if a person shoplifts, the reward could seem

even greater to them.

In my experience as a law enforcement officer, I have apprehended people that have stolen or tried to steal food items. It is a sad situation when the

person tries to explain that they have no money to eat or even feed their children. I have seen storeowners have a system that allows people to work for what they have taken. Some have even been able to work out a program with the owners to receive food that could not be put out for sale because of dates on the packaging. Though this opportunity curbed shoplifting at this particular store, I realize this practice is not the norm.

Then again, you have the teens that pocket makeup because of the price, or on

a dare from friends. Not too many of us as children didn’t have the urge to pocket that candy bar.

It was pretty scary when you’ were caught and your parents were told.

Normally, that would stop a future thief.

You also have those people who believe they don’t get paid enough money for the job they do.

They think that the company or store makes a ton of money, so if they steal items it doesn’t hurt anyone. Often, they do not realize that the theft they committed just forced the company to raise prices in order to make up for the loss.

With people becoming unemployed and money being tight, you see an increase in theft, sometimes seemingly out of necessity. That is the sad part. You see people stealing formula to feed their kids, or children trying to deal with the peer pressure that makes them feel they must have the great sneakers or those special brand-name jeans. I also realize that for people who are depressed, shoplifting can make them feel better in the short-term.

Theft and shoplifting will never be completely stopped. All we can do is

try to teach our children that shoplifting is a punishable crime and not to do it for any reason.

Here are some facts regarding shoplifting:

•1 in 11 people shoplift (27 million in our nation)

•The is no profile for a shoplifter; both men and women shoplift equally

•Approximately 25% of shoplifters are kids, the other 75% are adults

•Habitual shoplifters steal approximately 2 times per week

•Many shoplifters buy items and steal items in the same visit

•50% of the time, shoplifters (if caught) are turned over to police

This problem affects all of us. If you do see someone shoplifting, mention it to the store manager discreetly and do not try to handle it yourself.

Some stores have security officers that are trained to handle the situation without escalation, and you should always let the professionals do their job.

Living And Praying In Tornado Alley

On the evening of April 28th I was reading a book while keeping one eye on the weather station. The red blob on the weather map was moving toward my house. When the newscaster said there was a possibility of tornadoes, my friend (and sometimes redhead) Pat suggested that we drive to Aunt Jo Holt’s on Highway 72 and get in her storm shelter. “Let’s wait a while,” I said.

I was following Daddy’s theorem about tornadoes which he explained as follows: “Aww, well, it’ll either git you or it won’t.”

That’s 50-50 odds. He never went anywhere except to bed; claimed the wind and rain made him sleep soundly. I was beginning to wish I had purchased a storm shelter instead of hoarding my money for a trip. As the wind increased, it occurred to me that the only trip I might be taking was to eternity.

I initiated my safety procedure by removing suitcases and several bushels of junk from the hall closet. My survival plan was to get inside the closet at the last moment, close the door and pray hard. Heavy rain battered the storm

door and windows.

Wind howled outside.

I heard the wailing sirens at Rogersville and Clements. Then the power went off. Our cellphones wouldn’t function. Pat’s niece texted, telling us that a tornado was headed straight toward us.

“Let’s go to Jo’s!” exclaimed Pat, but it was too late. Afterwards, when the worst had passed, I followed Daddy’s example and went to bed and slept like a rock with no idea of what had happened to others. Next morning, I noticed that a dead limb had fallen from a large Poplar tree in the back yard. Then I brewed coffee on the gas grill in the carport. Texting brought news of death and destruction nearby.

Later, when I drove to Athens to obtain a generator at Tall Paul’s Rental, I witnessed the destruction for the first time. Aunt Jo’s place looked like a giant bush hog had chopped through it. ncient trees were down and one was lying right where my little Toyota pick-up would have been parked had we fled to her storm shelter. Pat and I transferred the contents of three freezers, some 28 packets of sweet corn, soup

and leftovers to my deep freeze. I plugged in the generator. Over nine days, I estimated that I used about $100 worth of gas to save those 28 bags of corn and leftovers. However, the generator proved its worth in other ways. It powered my coffee maker, radio and a reading light. Listening to the radio at night reminded me of my childhood back in the 1940s. Daddy would turn on our battery-powered radio and it crackled with static as he dialed in the evening news. Back then there was real news, not the puff stuff of today which is mostly entertainment, promoting books, and telling us which actor has re-entered rehab, or, even worse, what the Kardashians are doing. I don’t believe a darned word they say anymore. Daddy’s favorite newscaster was Gabriel Heatter. He had never heard of political correctness. When his rich baritone voice came across the airwaves, Daddy shushed us. “Everybody be quiet.”

There is good news tonight!” said Heatter. Then he told about a Japanese destroyer that American forces had sunk or some other great news. Nowadays, a gorgeous blonde with long legs poking out of a miniskirt reports the latest lies out of Washington. I am sick of it – not the nice legs - the lies! I want to hear good news such as the number of lying, conniving politicians that have been arrested that day, how many are on trial and how many were convicted. I want to see videos of FBI cuffing them and dragging them out of our marble buildings. I want to believe in my government again.

Sorry about the rant, but the thought of TV non-news and Washington politicians triggers a deep primitive instinct inside me to grab a bucket of hot tar and a wad of feathers and march on Washington.

Anyway, no power for nine days was a blessing for me in some small way. I got out my chainsaw and Pat and I helped Aunt Jo clean

up following the tornado.

I took cold showers and listened to the radio at night. I witnessed neighbors coming together to help one another. I saw men and women from other areas clearing debris and restoring power lines.

When I drove past them, I yelled “Thank you!” It felt good. One morning I was cutting up a large oak tree when an Ardmore fire truck drove up. Three well-fed guys unloaded with a chainsaw and went to work. I didn’t get their names, but said “thank you Ardmore!”

God bless this county. I love the people and I love living here. I haven’t lost faith in my neighbors, only my government. I learned that Limestone Countians are resilient and self-reliant. I also learned that prayer is powerful, but believe that the Lord helps those who help themselves. I’ve decided to do my part. I’m forgetting about the planned trip. Instead, I’m installing a storm shelter.
