My husband Steve has now officially been on Facebook for a year, and has sent me all manner of memes and videos. Some are funny, some are zany, some are aggravating, some are touching and some are truly inspiring. This week he sent me one that was so inspiring that I watched it 5 times in a row. It is entitled Boat Lift, and is only 11 minutes long. It is about the biggest boat lift in human history, the one that occurred on September 11, 2001.

I have several family members who live in New York City, and to say that the day we now refer to as 9/11 changed them forever is a great understatement. My sister heard the first plane go into the tower, and she saw the second one. As such, because I had people who were “boots on the ground” that day, I thought I had a pretty good handle on what happened.

I have been in a live audience to hear Rudy Giuliani talk about the challenges he faced that day as a leader.

In Iraq, I was around several members of the Fighting 69th National Guard Unit who were activated that day, one whose post was on the corner where my sister lives. However, it was not until last week that I learned about Boat Lift, and I have told everyone in my life about it.

Women As Rangers

by Ali Elizabeth Turner On Wednesday, August 19, 2015, history was made, and if you’ll indulge me, I’ll tell you why it makes me sad.

Two women passed Ranger school, which makes them the Army’s version of the previously mythical GI Jane. While I salute the fact that they made it through, and cannot imagine the rigors through which they passed, I cannot celebrate. The two women are officers, and are to be commended as well as thanked in advance for their service. Their names are Captain Kristen Griest, and 1st Lieutenant Shaye Haver, and their families have described them as “extraordinary soldiers.” I am sure they are. So, why do I sound so sour about this?

Prior to soldiers literally occupying the physical trenches, they develop a system of relationships that is known as “battle buddies.” That person could roughly be compared to police officers who are partners. They know each other inside and out, their weaknesses, strengths, and are sworn to watch each other’s “six,” that is, their back.

In the Army, the phrase they use when they are moving on foot into battle is, “Buddy set, buddy moving.”

Men will tell you that there is simply a different dynamic between guys when they are protecting each other, than when they are protecting women. A man instinctively will put himself in front of a woman in order to protect her, and he will instinctively run into danger in order to free his buddy to “get the job done.” There are

At the end of the day, when they all come back from seeing and doing God knows what in order to keep us safe, to ask soldiers of opposite genders to sleep in the same tent as though they are androgynous is sheer madness. I don’t want to think about how tough it would be for either gender, married or single.

While I am not privy to what the details of the training requirements are for Rangers, and I most sincerely hope that they were not lowered for the women due to the fact that on average a man has 45% more upper body strength than a woman.

Even that difference in strength is not the point.

I have seen women contribute significantly to a war effort. I don’t even have an objection to them fighting from the sky.

But if you think guys are going to be at the top of their game wondering for a split second if their female battle buddy can kick in the door as they follow, that split second is one that could cost everyone their life. And that is why I am not celebrating the sight of a female Ranger with a shaved head, who will receive her pin today at Ft. Benning.

The Heritage Children’s Chorale Of The South Enters Its 27th Season

by Ali Elizabeth Turner The Heritage Children’s Chorale of the South, a professional children’s chorus made up of young people ranging in age from eight to eighteen, proudly announces open auditions for the 20152016 season. Now entering its 27th season, the Chorale was established in Pulaski in 1988, by Mary Stephenson, who continues today as the director. In 1997, an additional chapter was established in Alabama.

conversation with Mary, and if I had kids in my home who were 8-18, and who wanted to sing, I would definitely “beat feet” to give them the chance to train with her. She legitimately carries the title, “Children’s Voice Specialist,” and I have no doubt that she would have the ability to draw out the singing gifting of any child. Mary has an extensive background in music, as does Canna Ricketts, the Chorale’s accompanist. Mary studied voice under Dr. Hugh Ross, as well as other vocal coaches. She has done everything from opera to jamming with James Taylor and John Sebastian, but her passion is kids. She has been the director of music at First United Methodist Church in Athens for 21 years.

Mary teaches the kids that their whole body is “an instrument you carry with you,” and I share her belief that being able to sing decently is an extremely important skill for all children. With as many choices for activities for kids these days, music lessons and voice lessons are often being neglected.

With each practice being only 90 minutes, once a week, it is perfectly possible to pursue other interests without kids getting burned out. What is boggling to my mind is that the fee per year to be a part of the Chorale is only $150.00. To

It is also important for parents of children interested in becoming a part of the Chorale to understand that the audition process is very low key and not at all stressful. Applicants do not need to have a specific piece of music prepared ahead of time, and I have full confidence that Mary is able to “hear” the singing voice of a child that may be hiding under a lack of confidence or experience. I asked her if I could ever come and attend a rehearsal after the audition process is com-

best kept local secrets. However, if Athens Now has anything to do with it, the days of being a local “secret treasure” will soon be over. Over the years, the Chorale has had the opportunity to be a part of several tours, which have included Disney World, New York City, Chattanooga, Memphis, Gatlinburg, Philadelphia, Chicago, Washington DC, Graceland, St. Louis, and Myrtle Beach. The Tennessee chapter appeared in Nashville at Opryland at Christmastime with Amy Grant and Vince Gill. They have sung in connection with the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra, the Shoals Symphony, and the Nashville Symphony. They have also received invitations to sing in Spain, Austria, the Czech Republic, and Great Britain. Each year, the Chorale performs five times locally here in the Tennessee Valley, so you don’t have to go to the Czech Republic to hear

Know Your Options

What To Do With Your Retirement Funds When You Change Jobs There are many new challenges to face if you happen to be changing jobs or retiring – not the least of which is the decision of what to do with the retirement funds that have accumulated in your 401(k) and other retirement plans over the years of service with your employers. These decisions may have a significant impact on your future financial security in retirement.

Option 1 Your employer hands you a check for the amount in your retirement plan.

This may look like a bonanza, but selecting this option could be a mistake. First, your employer is required to withhold 20% from your lump sum distribution, so you will only receive 80%.

Second, if you are younger than 59 ½, you may be subject to a 10% additional federal income take penalty for early withdrawal. Third, you are liable for paying income taxes on the full amount – if you fail to roll over the full amount of your funds, including the 20% that was withheld, into an IRA within 60 days.

Option 4 Put the money into a traditional IRA Rollover.

By having your former employer’s retirement play pay the IRA custodian directly, you avoid the 20% withholding or any penalties.

There are numerous benefits to your own IRA Rollover: •A potentially wider choice of investment opportunities – you can select the stocks, bonds, mutual funds or other investments that are right

for you.

•The ability to withdraw without penalty for some purposes. Withdrawals can be make without penalty by taking a series of substantially equal periodic payments for at least 5 years or until after you reach age 59 ½.

Withdrawals are subject to normal income tax penalty.

Thus if you are planning to retire before you reach 59 ½,

this method can enable you to dip into your IRA Rollover without penalty. *Please note, there may be other eligible retirement plans which can accept funds.

James L. (Jim) Watson is a true hometown hero because he continually strives to make Athens a better place to live and always has time to lend a hand when it is needed.

Jim spent over 32 years in the caring business, whether it was working in the operating room at Athens Limestone Hospital or at Athens Convalescent home, he was taking care of someone!

After getting out of the Army in 1966, he worked at Cuttler Hammer and then decided to go to Calhoun College School of Nursing. He spent 18 years in the operating room at Athens Hospital.

He supports all of his local veteran’s organizations. He is a member in good standing of the American Legion Post 49, American Veterans (AMVETS) Post 21, Disabled American Veterans Post 51, Vietnam Veterans of America, (VVA) Post 511, and the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW).

Jim not only supports these organizations, he is constantly recruiting new members. Jim is also a proud member of the Limestone County Burial Detail, ensuring our fallen veterans receive a proper military funeral.

Jim is a member of the Limestone County Sportsman Club, where he teaches children how to fish, all the while respecting others’ property, and sets up turkey shoots. He teaches children at Cowart Elementary about flag etiquette and how to fold the flag. He also plays Santa Claus at Christmas at the school. Add in being a volunteer at Hospice during the annual Chili Challenge, helping out with Relay for Life, giving blood and working at the senior center, you can see

he is a busy man! In spite of all these things, Jim is still able to help out with one of his three grandchildren at the drop of a hat!!

Jim has been a volunteer at the Alabama Veterans’ Museum since the beginning. He gives tours and educates our children on local and military history.

He would like to see an

elevator installed to the second floor so everyone can enjoy the library. He attends church at the West Hobbs St. Church of Christ, where he volunteers to drive a bus for a monthly seniors and widows outing. Come by the Alabama Veterans’ Museum and let him give you one of the best tours going!

The Duck and Run 5K: It’s a Race for the Environment!

GO to Raceroster.com and register to be part of the 12th Annual Duck and Run 5K taking place on Saturday, September 19th to support the work of Keep Athens-Limestone Beautiful! The first Duck and Run 5K was held in 2004, three years after the initial Wacky Quacky Ducky Derby, our rubber duck race fundraiser. On October 3rd, KALB will host the 15th annual rubber duck race!

Fundraisers are a necessary part of the life of a non-profit organization.

Thanks to generous sponsors, every dollar of the registration fee for the Duck and Run 5K goes directly to KALB and supports the work of our organization as we educate, inform, and engage our community in protecting our local environment.

KALB does this through classroom presentations which are available to all public and private schools in Athens and Limestone County. Programs are available for any age group in a variety of topics. KALB gets the community involved through programs and projects such as Adopt-A-Spot, Elk River Cleanup, Clean and Green Events, Community Garden and more.

Volunteer opportunities are available throughout the year. Additionally, information is shared through social media, our website, newspaper articles, and local radio and television.

RACE INFORMATION The Duck and Run 5K is a moderately challenging race through the streets of historic Athens, Alabama.

Runners will pass antebellum homes, wind around the Courthouse Square, and enjoy refreshments and award presentations in the historic Athens Utilities Building which was built in 1906. This building was renovated and is now the Athens Visitors Center.

Marinated Grilled Shrimp

by Cindy Bridges, owner of Cindy Lou’s Deli I love fresh fish and seafood! I love it even more cooked on the grill with that wonderful smoke flavor. Some fish are better suited for the grill than others (firmer fleshed fish like shrimp, mahi mahi,

sword fish, etc.). Shrimp are perfect for the grill and can be placed directly on the grates, skewered or in a grilling basket. On that note, I leave you with my favorite grilled shrimp recipe.

Marinated Grilled Shrimp For Two 2 lb. whole fresh shrimp, peeled and deveined, with tails left on Marinade: ½ tsp. cumin 2 Tbs. fresh lime juice ½ tsp. basil ¼ tsp. freshly ground black pepper 1 ½ tsp. finely minced fresh garlic ¾ tsp. salt 1 Tbs. olive oil 1/8 tsp. dill weed 2 tsp. mince chives 1/8 tsp. sugar

Directions: 1. Combine the ingredients for the marinade in a large zip-loc bag.

2. Place shrimp in bag and shake to coat. Lay flat and let absorb the flavors of the marinade for 20 to 30 minutes. Flip bag over after 10 to 15 minutes.

3. Preheat grill.

4. Remove shrimp from bag and place in hinged fish basket or thread onto shish kabob skewers.

5. Place the shrimp on the grill and cook covered until pink. Depending on the size, 5 to 10 minutes, turning the skewers once.

6. Serve with lemon or melted butter.

a total knock out,) and a frown on the computer’s “face.” “Oh, man, my computer has certainly been in exactly that shape more than once,” I said.

He grinned back and said that his favorite computer challenge is a unit or system that is so dead that, as he says, “You mash on the button and it won’t come on,” let alone do anything. I thought, “Now, that’s confidence,” and I was intrigued to hear his story. Matthew is 33 years old, and like many GenYers/Millenials, he nearly cut his teeth on PCs. He “grew up” on a Packard Bell with Windows 3.1. Given the fact that Windows 10 is just now coming out, you don’t have to be a computer nerd to figure out just how much a person has had to do in order to keep up with all the changes. He took apart his own computer in order to fix it, and that is what got him started.

“This was long before the days when students had laptops in connection with doing school work,” he said. “I begged my Mom to get a Toshiba laptop, (which back in the day cost a whopping $900,) and Matthew was

essentially ahead of the game long before school systems were requiring computers for kids.

“Everything always came natural,” he said.

He attended Virginia College to gain expertise in software/hardware maintenance and trouble shooting. “I especially loved the computer lab at Virginia College,” he said. And while he worked for a support company for UPS, he knew this is what he wanted to do, and ClemTech was born.

Matthew is on call with several commercial business owners, such as Cell-Touch here in Athens, and some individual clients.

He also loves to tutor school-age kids struggling with acquiring their required computer skills. As the father of three kids, (including twins), he understands how important it is for 21st century students to have a good grasp on the subject in order to be competitive in their eventual careers. He also has a heart for the elderly who are trying to become comfortable with a subject

that not all that long ago was only the domain of geniuses, and now is considered a basic skill. In addition, he told me that he loves doing personal errands for seniors who have a hard time getting around. Blending the two venues is a joy for him.

He takes care of dealing with the usual computer “diseases,” such as viruses, malware, spyware, and slow running units, but he also wants to teach his clients how to avoid picking “bugs” back up again and accidentally

He added, “I like to function as a consultant, and will advise them as to what they need, and why they need it.” He will also help with data recovery and back up, installation of complicated software at a fraction of the retail price, and network troubleshooting.

Another reason is pricing.

Because Matthew is mobile, and does not have the overhead of a brick-andmortar storefront, he can pass savings on to the customer. “They get the same quality of service for less,” he said. His motto is “tech support when you need it,” and he is able to come to you. You don’t have to dismantle anything and hope you brought all the right cords and equipment.

Mike Criscillis For 5th District House Of Representatives

side of the bridge, which was home to Poles, Italians as well as Greeks. He has had a fascinating career, and has prayerfully concluded that it is time to step up and serve again; this time with the intention of filling the seat in the Alabama House vacated by the recent passing of Dan Williams.

A lifelong Conservative, Mike has had the privilege of serving under such Generals as Colin Powell, and General Edwin Burba. He describes them as being “some of the best and the brightest.” He has a son who is a Wounded Warrior, and who served 11 tours in Afghanistan.

Mike worked in the Pentagon off and on special projects from 1993-2009, and was thankfully not present in the building on 9/11.

He was Non-Commission Officer in Charge, (NCOIC) for the 125th U.S. Army Reserve Command for all Honor Guard events, and burial details. During the Reagan

Administration, he researched and oversaw protocol for an event in Tennessee where the Commander in Chief was present. He also had to make sure protocol was proper for several events attended by dignitaries and heads of state.

He oversaw the 125th Army Reserve Command Honor Guard duty at Opryland, of all places.

However, his “baby,” that is, the thing he enjoyed the most, was Family Readiness, the department that does the greatest amount of work to support families before and during the time their loved ones are away on deployments, and helps with their return to military or civilian life. That was his focus during Desert Shield/ Desert Storm.

Much of what he had to oversee was logistics, and currently is a Captain in the Civil Air Patrol. His main job in that capacity is emergency management. However, he also did a one year stint in military

intelligence, in Army Reserve Command. Additionally, he told me, he “has a strong background in personnel.”

He ended his military and

civil service career with two designations: Command Sergeant Major and GS 14, which is unusual, and then coached varsity football as well as taught at a private Christian school in the Atlanta area for 3 years. His subjects were history and Bible.

He and his wife Shirley moved to Athens in 2013, and he has been active as a volunteer at the Veterans’ Museum. He is also on the Museum’s Board of Directors. We talked about the fact that there are a number of good men who are running for the 5th District seat, so what is it that he brings to the table that would make me want to vote for him?

“First of all, I am not a politician,” he said. “I have roots in Knoxville and Huntsville, and I watched the town of McDonough lose its small town charm because it didn’t handle growth very well. I want to help Athens with what I learned

from that situation,” he said. He mentioned that while he doesn’t “have all the answers, I think outside the box. When I was in the Department of Army, I found ways to save the military millions of dollars while restoring an active Army base that also had a lot of historical value. I got an award for it.” He also managed an 18.5 million dollar budget for the National Infantry Museum.

He went on to say, “Everybody across the SE is struggling—farmers, kids, senior citizens who work at McDonald’s, etc, and I am willing to work for the people to find answers.

I am a problem solver.”

He attended the Senior Executive for Federal Budget and Execution of Federal Budget, and is very familiar with working all aspects of budgets involving millions of dollars. He had to go take an intensive Federal law course in order to get his certification for the Executive position. He made me chuckle when he said, “I need to lose weight and need to trim, and so does Montgomery. You have to balance your budget, and live within your means.

And, we need our fair share from Montgomery.” He told me, “We need a fresh face in Montgomery,” he said, “and I am not a rubber stamp. I believe in asking this question: ‘How will what you want to do affect the community, businesses and individual families?’”

Athens Rehabilitation And Senior Care Center Spotlight On Edna Higginbotham

by Ali Elizabeth Turner Edna Noreen Higginbotham was born in 1915, the second of several children, and moved here when she was a girl. As a teen she married Bayley Gardner Higginbotham, and they had three boys: Erskine, Douglas, and Ray. The Higginbothams were farmers, and back in the day in our area, most farmers grew cotton and corn. Now Douglas raises hay at the family’s 40 acres in East Limestone. Erskine recalls a time when he and his cousins jumped out of the hay-

loft, which was strictly forbidden, and Edna and all the aunties, (Willie and Gladys), made sure their legs got “switched.” I asked him, “Was it worth it?” He just smiled. He also talked about what it was like, back in the day, to have your telephone be on the party line, and to have to get off right away if either your parents or someone else needed to use the phone. We laughed about the fact that “kids today have no idea what you’re talking about” when it comes to the technology

of a bygone era. “Other things too,” I added. He agreed.

Miss Edna has been a woman of many talents. As a farm wife, there is no doubt she knew how to put in a hard day’s work.

However, later on, after the boys were older, she and another woman had a business that included hanging dry wall, laying tile, painting, and refurbishing houses. And yes, they did the heavy lifting!

Miss Edna has also been a life-

long quilter. Erskine, and his wife, Mary, have slept for 62 years under a quilt made

by Edna, and for those of you who appreciate quilting, theirs was made in the “double wedding ring” pattern. The kids and grandkids have all received handmade quilts, and many are in “Alabama or Auburn” motif.

Only in this respect is the Higginbotham family a “house divided!” Other than that, they are very close.

Mary says that Edna was an excellent cook, and Mary’s favorite was “her chicken, dressing and cornbread.” She also loved Edna’s chocolate pie.

Erskine remembers that his mom loved to sit in the living room and play the piano when she had spare time. Edna has been a lifelong (and currently the oldest) member of Sardis Springs Baptist Church, which celebrated its 100th year anniversary the same weekend the Higginbothams and Athens Rehab celebrated hers.

An interesting additional fact about Miss Edna is that for several years she was the Executive Housekeeper at Athens Rehab and Senior Care. Erskine quipped, “She thought she still ran the place when we brought her here!” She has been at the facility for close to 10 years, and

she loves all the activities. She has been a two-time contestant in the Beauty Pageant. and is especially fond of bingo.

The family has always been pleased with the care Edna has received at Athens Rehab, and over the years there have been so many excellent caregivers that they have lost count.

So now we are on to her “favorites.”

Favorite food? Breakfast, and they grew up eating the traditional farm breakfast everyday.

President? Jimmy Carter, and Miss Edna has been a lifelong Democrat.

Activity? Bingo, although other games caught her fancy as well.

Miss Edna is a beautiful woman, within and without, and we wish her a wonderful year as a Centenarian!

Horse Whispering

Defining Moments

by Deb Kitchenmaster Can you recall a moment in your life that brought a significant awareness, an inside shift, or a sense of direction? Or maybe a moment when you experienced confidence, peace of mind, or a sense of well being that was empowering rather than performing? Those are defining moments.

Within the past thirty days, I have had re-connections with four different individuals that have had a session with me and one of our horses here at CORRAL CONNECTIONS. Of the four, I had asked one of them if they would be willing to share their experience. As a pleasant surprise, the others came to me without my having to request.

Each of these re-connects was a defining moment for me and I am grateful. These re-connects have refreshed my memory of what and why I do what I do.

First of all, it’s not about riding; yet we ride. It’s not about session upon session, and you need to keep coming. One of my top priorities for someone who has scheduled a session at CORRAL CONNECTIONS is to experience a defining moment and go live your life. Out of the four people that I referred to earlier, three of them had only ONE session. Please allow me to share some of

their defining moments.

I received a message on my Facebook account from a CORRAL CONNECTIONS person who had recently graduated from University in Canada, and was coming to Huntsville.

Could we connect and could she see the horses was the request. I had met this young gal when she was eleven/twelve years old, living in Huntsville, and enjoyed time with her and our horses. When we got together, she shared with me these defining moments: (+) though I was

young and you were an adult, you didn’t talk down to me or make me feel insignificant (+) I remember you telling me that when I was with horse Annie, my leadership needed to exceed her own or there was a possibility she would not listen to me; that I needed to “up” my leadership (I “remembered” this in college and applied this defining moment more than once as a student) (+) I remember coming out to the barn and reading on the white board “a new barn rule:” NOT ALLOWED IN DEB’S BARN (the spoken phrase) “I KNOW THAT” by the end of that session we were laughing so hard because I had caught myself several times. I had no idea how frequently I said those words. It was a defense for me that was rooted in a belief system held in place by shame. My identity was “in knowing” not “being”.

Two brothers from Ohio came to Alabama to spend some time with their grandfather and grandmother.

The two boys came out for a session. A few weeks ago, they were watching a horse event on television that triggered a memory of the session here. I received a phone call. (+) though it’s been three years I “remember” that “enriching” moment with the horses (+) enjoyed connecting with the horses (+)became aware of how comfortable I was with horses (+) how the horse looked to me for leadership and trusted me was amazing (+) grooming the horse was one of my favorites (+) when we return to Alabama can we come again?

It had been four years since I have been in the presence of this businesswoman from St. Louis, MO. She remembered her one session and shared in an email ‘my defining moment with Deb

Kitchenmaster and (horse) Ruhammah was leadership training, grief counseling, spiritual guidance and balance training cleverly disguised as a horse session! (+) I was surprised when Deb escorted me into the barn and expected me to choose my horse partner for the session (+) I was instructed to take on the energy of a leader and believe, when I did the horse let out a big sigh “he can relax now because a leader has arrived” (+) breathing exercise was a great exercise all by itself (my focus changed) (+) Deb was called to bring forth another level of leadership in me. Years later I am still amazed by all that was accomplished in the Round Pen (+) I sobbed, letting go of grief and limitations (+) I was humbled by the patience and honor of my horse partner (+) I saw the mutual respect between Deb and her horses (+) four days after my horse session I had the opportunity to jump out of an airplane and I DID!

Thank you Thea, Miles, Markus and Carrie for reconnecting! It blesses me to know that your moment was noteworthy, significant and essential to your journey.

The full title of this section of Gen Vinnie Boles book is 4 Expectations Teams Have Of Leaders, and while the )frame of reference is from pa military standpoint, hav,ing a clear understanding -of the team’s expectations -in a family, church, town, school or business is one of nthe things that brings clarity, and causes leaders to improve their skills.

As Mayor Ronnie read to sme, (without donning his eDr. Seuss hat, by the way,) I -learned something new: staetistically people who could nbe considered non-risk takrers make two big mistakes a year, and people who could tbe considered risk takers yalso make two big mistakes a year. He also told me that hGeneral Colin Powell states pthat “leaders have to be comfortable making deci-sions with about 60% of the dinformation.” That’s a sobering thought, especially swhen it comes to combat. eThankfully, in Athens we are not often in a situation where decisions have to be nmade that are life-or-death, )but they are none the less important.

“My charge is to do my best to get all the information to the City Council so they can ,make a good decision,” he -said, and emphasized the efact that the books are open, tespecially important in an election season, and as the City “budget season” begins this fall.

I don’t envy him at all in that department. Decisions to hire, fire, revamp, streamline, save money, spend money, speak up, say nothing, accidentally ruffle feathers or yank someone’s chain, it all goes with the territory. However, there is

something that we as believers are commanded to do for our leaders, and that is pray for them.

So we did, as we always do, and then it was time once again for Ronnie to roll.

Back to School!

Well, it’s that time of year again: time for kids to go back to school after a fun-filled summer. I know that many schools around Limestone and Madison County have already opened their doors to students, and that for most the learning has already started in full swing. I remember as a kid being excited on the last day of school, and at the end of the summer dreading the first one back. But as I’ve gotten a little older, I’ve found that I miss those days much more than I’d like to admit.

It’s important to focus on ways to keep your child healthy this school year, not just at the beginning. Below you will find some tips to help you do that, and keep your little ones (or not so little ones) on top of their game all year long.

Nutrition I start with nutrition because it is the building block of all the rest. We’ve all heard that a healthy breakfast can help students concentrate better, and studies show that this is actually true. If your child doesn’t eat breakfast, they may not get another chance to eat for several hours, and their academic performance may suffer because of this.

Cooking Light says that a healthy breakfast “contains a mix complex carbohydrates and protein.” They also suggest “pairing whole grains such as oatmeal, whole-wheat toast, or whole-grain cereal with a protein source such as milk, yogurt, peanut butter, eggs, or cheese. Add a side of fruit for a boost of vitamins and minerals.”

Also, pay attention to the meal calendars your child’s school sends home or posts online.

This may help you plan which days you want your child to eat in the cafeteria or which

days you want to pack them a lunch. I would suggest packing a lunch most days rather than buying something from the cafeteria so that you can save money and pack something nutritious for your child.

4.Consider a rolling backpack if the school allows them.

There are downsides to a rolling backpack though, including being carried upstairs, not rolling as well in water/snow/ ice, and may not fit into some lockers.

Transportation Safety No matter what venue of transportation your family chooses, it is important to review basic safety rules with them (aap.org).

•Walking: Choose a safe route with a responsible and well-trained adult to accompany your child. Identify other children who might be walking with them. Identify whether or not your child is a good candidate for walking as small children may not be as careful.

•Biking: Your child should always wear a helmet and ride in the same direction as traffic. Use appropriate hand signals and obey traffic lights and stop signs.

•Car: Always wear a seatbelt and use child safety seats as indicated for your child’s height and weight. Children under 13 years old should ride in the back seat. If your teenager is driving, always use a seat belt, restrict the amount of other teens in the vehicle, and don’t allow eating, drinking, or cell phone usage of any kind while behind the wheel.

•Bus: Always enter and exit the bus safely. Wait for the bus on the curb, not in the street. Ensure that your child is where she can see the driver, allowing the driver to also see him or her. The child should not stand up or walk while the bus is in motion. If the bus has seat belts, encourage your child to use them when available.

Don’t Forget The Good Part!

So much to do and so little time to get it all accomplished! I am a doer and a worker-bee, as my husband would say. Yes, without a doubt, that indeed is me! I am always involved in this group or that project, having millions of thoughts running through my mind regarding objectives, checklists, tasks, contacts, and of course the list just goes on and on.

Do you know someone like this? You probably do. These are the individuals who never really stop to take a break. They are always on the go to an activity, meeting or planning the next event. Don’t you just want to say to them BE STILL, STOP AND ENJOY THE MOMENT? Well, maybe that person is you! Doesn’t it getting really exhausting trying to hold all that information together and actually be successful with the outcomes?

We can be so busy doing all day and all night long that we never enjoy what the Lord has given us: an opportunity to receive.

event, we are still checking off the list but we are so tired and stressed that we actually miss out on appreciating the time with our family and friends who we spent so much time preparing for.

Let’s take a moment to personally assess: What was the real purpose for the event? Are all those items on the checklist really required or needful?

Would not your loved ones rather have you laughing and talking with them than perspiring with sweat and being disgusted because the writing on the cake was the wrong color?

I am reminded of the story shared in the Bible about Mary and Martha, two sisters who were on a mis-

sion. Luke 10:38-42: 38 As Jesus and the disciples continued on their way to Jerusalem, they came to a certain village where a woman named Martha welcomed him into her home.

39 Her sister, Mary, sat at the Lord’s feet, listening to what he taught. 40 But Martha was distracted by the big dinner she was preparing. She came to Jesus and said, “Lord, doesn’t it seem unfair to you that my sister just sits here while I do all the work? Tell her to come and help me.” 41 But the Lord said to her, “My dear Martha, you are worried and upset over all these details! 42 There is only one thing worth being concerned about. Mary has discovered it, and it will not be taken away from her.”

Martha’s goals were to be a gracious host, make sure that her guests were taken care of and had everything they needed. Mary’s goals were to be mindful, aware and engaged in listening attentively to their guest Jesus Christ so as to gain an understanding of his teachings.

Was either sister wrong in their goals? No, but as Jesus spoke with Martha, he shared with her that when we get so caught up with worry in the details we miss the “good part.”

In Martha’s eagerness to serve, she was missing the opportunity to truly know him.

As I leave you today, I must take my own medicine and remember the “good part”

should always be at the top of my list. I often times get so caught up in planning and preparation that I miss the true purpose of love and service.

Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. How often we choose to let doing consume us instead of enjoying and being present in the events of our lives. Think about those birthday parties or special occasion events we plan for our loved ones.

We pull out all the stops and prepare for the guest to be wowed. Staying up late and driving all over town trying to pick out the perfect matching items to make sure everything is immaculate. The day of the
