December 10th marks the beginning of this year’s Hanukkah celebration, and while our family is Christian, we have celebrated this holiday for several years, largely for one reason: Jesus our Savior, (whose accurate name is Yeshua, and whose birth gets celebrated each year on December 25th even though it’s not His real birthday) celebrated Hanukkah. “What?” you may ask. Yep, here it is in the gospel of John, Chapter 10: 22-25 And it was at Jerusalem the feast of the dedication, and it was winter.

23 And Jesus walked in the temple in Solomon's porch.

24 Then came the Jews round about him, and said unto him, How

long dost thou make us to doubt? If thou be the Christ, tell us plainly.

25 Jesus answered them, I told you, and ye believed not: the works that I do in my Father's name, they bear witness of me.

Scholars agree that Hanukkah inarguably is the Feast of Dedication, and while it isn’t mentioned in the recorded line-up of feasts in the Bible, the fact that Yeshua went to Jerusalem to celebrate it in the middle of winter I think is something that should give us pause. Of course, once He stepped onto Solomon’s porch He stirred things up, which was always part of His MO. The debate continues to this day regarding the current scope of His works. Some folks like me

know from experience that He still does everything He ever did, and others felt like for some reason once we became the People of the Book 2.0, we no longer needed the fulness of what He promised. Seriously?

We’re in the midst of a really rough season of sickness, and we don’t need healing? But, I digress….

The title of this Point is The Strength Of The Shamash, and the word means “slave” or “servant.” The “slave candle,” which is in the middle of the 9-candle menorah or Hanukkah candle is the most honored of all the candles. Why? Because it serves. Its whole job each night is to be lit first, and then light more and more candles each of the 8 nights until the menorah represents the fulness of

the miracle long ago when one night’s oil burned in the temple for a full eight nights.

Isn’t that what we need to be in the midst of a holiday season that many would just as soon ignore because they are afraid?

What is it about the slave or servant that has always been and still is so strong?

I guess what would sum it up the best to me would be, “surrender.” When you are surrendered, in a strange way, you are in a position of strength because no one can break you. When we look at the model of the Light and Life we are celebrating, let us remember one of His most interesting statements a bit earlier in verse 18: No man taketh it from me, but I lay it down of myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again.

This commandment have I received of my Father.

If you determine that you are going to lay down your life, even in ways that no one but your Father sees, you will be a strong slave candle that lights up others who are then free to shine to their fulness. Happy Hanukkah.

Surviving WWII, COVID, And Turning 104

by Ali Elizabeth Turner Cullman native Major Wooten has by any estimate survived inestimable odds. Major (his name, not rank) was in Paris during the Second World War and worked building railroads and on rail cars. He, as is the case with many of the Greatest Generation, chose to pretty much seal off that era of his life and go on to build the dream that was afforded Americans after the war -- family, faith, opportunities, and freedom.

Talk therapy and support groups were not exactly a thing back then, and he stayed pretty quiet about it until a couple of years ago when he met other veterans through a group known as For-

ever Young Senior Veterans. Opening up to them caused Major to open up more in general, and when he turned 102, a grand birthday bash was thrown for him by family, friends, and several organizations. An ardent Alabama fan, he was given an autographed Bobby Humphrey football by the Letterman USA Association, a group of former coaches, players, and current coaches who support veterans and their causes.

It’s ironic as well as touching to think of a 102-year old having a “bucket list,” but chief on Mr. Wooten’s list was to return to Paris

and France for the 75th anniversary of the DDay Invasion. Major was among those who landed “on the beach,” in his case, Utah Beach.

He was able to do that last year as a 103-year old, and he said, “Part of my family wants to go back, and even if I’m not able to go, I want them to go,” He got his wish, and in 2019 returned to the place where countless died for our freedoms. Two other high points of his 103rd birthday were a letter from President Donald Trump and a Zoomstyle call from Alabama Coach Nick Saban that Major took on his laptop computer.

One would think that was enough adventure for a lifetime, but then Major contracted COVID-19, and had to be hospitalized in Madison. It would be easy to assume, given the statistics involving seniors and the mysterious, maddening malaise that has turned our culture upside down, that Mr. Wooten would now be saluting the Lord of the Armies on the other side.

But no, he has beaten the odds once again. On Tuesday, the first of December, Major Wooten left the hospital to return home to his eagerly awaiting family. He was wheeled through the hall of cheering loved ones, doctors, nurses,

and hospital staff out to a waiting car, and onto the airwaves of the national news media. TV affiliates from all around the country carried the story, and I doubt this humble man from Cullman had any intention of warming all of our hearts to such a welcome place this holiday season.

And, as if all of the aforementioned weren’t enough, in the midst of the Cullmanite’s COVID Capers, Major turned 104! Thank you, God bless you, and Happy Birthday, dear man! You are a gift to all of us when indeed, the “weary world” could use a serious dose of delight.

Athens Receives Grant To Expand Sidewalks, Add Pedestrian Bridge On Elm Street

Once the State directs the City to commence work on the project, the City will undergo the bidding process. Public Works Director James Rich said going through the design, bidding and construction process should take an estimated 36 months.

The City of Athens is receiving a $640,000 grant to expand sidewalks and add a pedestrian bridge on Elm Street to address safety concerns in that congested area.

Gov. Kay Ivey notified the city the funding is coming from the Transportation Alternatives Program (TAP). Elm Street, also known as the state highway Alabama 99, is a heavily traveled and serves residential, businesses and an industrial park. The City’s portion of the TAP project will be $160,000.

The project will start at the Elm Street and U.S 31 intersection and go west on Elm Street to Garett Drive. This includes an ADA compliant pedestrian bridge over Swan Creek. Currently, those who walk Elm Street to retail, recreational and educational facilities on U.S. 31 must walk in traffic without a dedicated pedestrian lane. The project will serve over 200 apart-

What Makes Ronnie Roll

Christmas Wishes

by Ali Elizabeth Turner The mayor and Holly Hollman had just been over to Big Spring Park decorating the city trees at the annual North Pole Stroll. There had been a touch of snow, it was unseasonably cold, and after they had finished, they decided to patronize the new White Bison coffee shop, which had just opened in the new Shell station located in Athens at Hwy 72 and Lindsay Lane South. They got one of those “frou-frou” coffees, and the mayor mimed the action of the barista spraying in whipped cream and topping it with sprinkles.

“They have really good coffee,” said the two of them.

While they were over at the park, a woman approached the mayor with regard to her habit of feeding the ducks daily. She asked, “Is it okay if I feed the ducks?”

“No ma’am,” was his response.

“So, it really is not ok to feed the ducks?”

“Yes, ma’am, that is correct. They have everything they need, and bread is not good for them.”

“But I do it every day,” she replied.

“Yes, ma’am, I believe that,” was his even-toned answer, and that was the civil as well as polite end of that particular exchange.

Would that the toughest of the problems we face in Athens, Alabama, never exceed equitably dealing with unauthorized duck feeding!

Our discussion moved to the specifics of the Athens city Christmas trees. Most folks know that Athens is very involved in fighting cancer through their long-time association with Relay For Life, and this year’s tree was decorated in Relay’s trademark purple. Holly said, “Rather than a Santa’s Wish List, the Relay tree was dedicated to remembering and honoring those who are no longer with us.”

On a happier but still a bit pensive note, the Mayor’s Youth Commission tree came about as a result of Holly finding Christmas cards and the kids wrote their Christmas wishes on each card. Holly had them laminated, and the cards became the weather-proof decorations for the tree.

The 46 different wishes were not about the latest video game or style, but rather what they would like to see happen to and for Athens. Here are some of the best of them: “My wish for Athens this Christmas is for everyone to remain happy and healthy, and stay safe during these uncertain times!

their normal health. Also I wish that 2021 will go a lot smoother than this year has gone.” - Elizabeth Ann Britnell I think my favorite one was also the simplest one: “I wish for a peaceful year.” - Christian Martinez Indeed, that is consistent with “Peace On Earth,” and we could use an extra dose of “men of good will!”

For several years, Mayor Ronnie and I have shared and written about our response to various books that have helped us be better folks. Some have been written by other mayors, some are personal development works, and one, like Alabama’s own Andy Andrews’ Travelers’ Gift are allegorical and meaty. He showed me several titles and let me pick which one

we were going to tackle come the new year. It’s called Friday Forward: Inspiration And Motivation To End Your Week Stronger Than It Started. I am looking forward to getting started on it.

Mayor Ronnie’s eyes twinkled as he told me about having had a chat with his 93-year old Uncle Herman Marks. “He is sharp as a tack, and served in the Alabama Legislature. Herman told me, ‘You are a part of history, (and Uncle meant more than Ronnie, but the citizens of Athens as well.)

Keep growing, keep moving, keep growing our community,’” Uncle Herman told the mayor.

We then prayed that the mayor would have the wisdom to do just that, and once again it was time for Ronnie to roll.

The only thing that stands between us and 2021 is the month of December! This has been an interesting year to say the least; and I am hopeful the next year will be better than what 2020 was. I do not believe anyone could have predicted the whacky and wild ride we experienced throughout this past year, but praise God it is almost over. I have mentioned before, the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over again and expecting a different result.

My question for you -What is one thing you need to do differently in 2021 than what you did in 2020?

For me, in 2021, my intention is to be more intentional. You may be like me where you know what you want to achieve, you have an idea, but sometimes you have difficulty translating what you are thinking into what you are desiring to accomplish.

Be more intentional – sounds good, but what does this mean? When I think about being intentional in 2021, I am envisioning myself taking massive amounts of action.

For some people, the answer is apparent, while others sometimes may have a little more difficulty. We are within the final month of 2020, the year of vision, and what is the one thing that will be a game changer for you in the upcoming year? In the three years I have been writing this column, I have spoken much about goals, clarity of thought, and having the right attitude, but I want you to be thinking about what you need to do to have a successful new year.

Have you ever been sitting there with the perfect ideas running through your head of

how you are going to accomplish something and then when you grab the pen and paper to take notes, the thoughts abandon you? I cannot tell you how many times I have had this happen, and I cannot tell you how many times I felt like I was just a few thoughts away from having the breakthrough “aha” moment I was seeking. As I sit here writing this column, though, I have determined that in 2021, instead of trying to get the thought process exactly the way I want, what I am going to do is take massive amounts of action to achieve that which I desire.

I have personal goals I want to achieve financially. I know what I need to do to reach this goal. Now, I need to take massive action to hit this

goal. I have personal goals I want to achieve spiritually with my walk with Jesus Christ. I know what I need to do to reach this goal. Now, I need to take massive action to hit this goal.

I have personal goals I want to achieve when it comes to my wife and my family. I know what I need to do to reach this goal. Now, I need to take massive action to hit this goal.

You may have noticed the repetition in the previous sentences, and this was not for you, the reader. The repetition is for me, the creator of my future. I need to familiarize myself with the concept of “massive action.” This is what I am banking the successes of my 2021 on; I need to be constantly reminded of what I am committing

to. How will I do it? I will grab some post-it notes and write these two words, Massive Action, on the yellow sheet of paper. I will place these post-it notes in highly visible areas that I will see throughout the course of every day. These post-it notes need to be my reminder for what I need to do to have a successful 2021.

I ask you again, what is the one thing you need to do differently in 2021 than what you did in 2020? Now is the actionable time for you.

Whatever you deem to be your game changer, do as I am doing and write the reminder on post-it notes to be a constant reminder. We cannot change what has happened the previous 365 days, but we can impact the next 365.

For myself, I need to get out of my own way. It seems quite often I end up coming up with an ex-

Litter – Let’s Work Together To Make Things Better

by Leigh Patterson - Executive Coordinator - Keep Athens-Limestone Beautiful Once a year, KALB participates in Keep America Beautiful’s Litter Index Survey.

We travel four stretches of roadway in each of Limestone County’s four commission districts, and each of Athens City’s five council districts.

We then score these according to the amount of litter that is found on the sides of the roadways.

KALB’s Office Manager, Jenny Green, and I began this year’s litter index in November. What we found was that our city and our county, though some areas are much better than others, have a real litter problem. As we were driving along winding roads with rolling hills and beautiful scenery, it was very disheartening to find that one thing kept outshining the natural beauty around us, and that was the unsightly litter on the sides of the road.

I could spend a great deal of time discussing who is littering, what other sources litter comes from, and why it continues to happen, and while these are important discussions to have, the fact of the matter is that the roadways/public spaces ARE littered, it IS a real problem, and it’s NOT going away. It is up to each one of us as individuals to do our part and to become part of the solution.

So, how can you as an individual make a difference? There are actions that you can take on your own, and there are ways that we at KALB can partner with you to help you to become part of the solution. Here are some of the things that you can do:

Besides just being unattractive, litter is harmful to our environment, it reduces property values, and it tells those who visit here that we might not care enough about our community to keep it clean.

I encourage you to open your eyes and pay attention to the

TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR OWN TRASH AND DISPOSE OF IT PROPERLY • Bag your trash properly at home and make sure that your trash cans have tight-fitting lids or lids that close. Do not toss loose items into your outdoor garbage cans.

• When in your car, hold on to your trash until you can find a garbage receptacle. Keep a litter bag in your car. KALB will be happy to provide you with a washable, reusable litter bag for your vehicle. Drop by the office during business hours and pick one up!

• Dispose of cigarette butts properly instead of throwing them down on the ground or out of the car window. KALB has both pocket ash trays and ash receptacles for vehicles available, and we will be happy to provide you with these to help keep cigarette litter out of the environment.

• Business Owner and Managers: Make sure that dumpsters are securely closed, and that loading docks, property frontage, and parking areas are kept clean. Have garbage receptacles and ash receptacles available if possible.

HOST A ONE-TIME CLEANUP KALB can supply you with everything you need to host a cleanup. You may choose to work individually or organize a group cleanup for your neighborhood or another area that needs attention. We will be happy to support you by lending supplies needed to clean, including litter grabbers, trash bags, safety vests, and gloves.

The Thanksgiving Blur

If your Thanksgiving is anything like mine, you cook for three days, eat for an hour, and then wonder what happened once it’s all over.

Being with family is wonderful and the time together is great; but sometimes it can leave you feeling bloated and in a daze. I know I have completely enjoyed all the wonderful foods that come with the holiday, but I am ready for a detox from all the rich food for sure.

At holidays, thoughtful eating seems to be put on the backburner. A buffet of cakes, macaroni and cheese, dressing, mashed potatoes, creamed corn, pecan pies, and cookies seem to magically fill your plate and your belly. You don’t even know what hit you until the smoke clears. I know I am ready for a clear mind and a clear way of eating in order to recover from the day.

the time Christmas rolls around, I am going to indulge in my favorite Christmas goodies.

Life, this whole eating healthy and being healthy thing, is just one day at a time. Some days, you knock it out of the park. It is a celery and water sort of day and you feel great. Then there are those days that nothing will satisfy like a 10-piece nugget meal with a large fry…and don’t forget the hot mustard, bbq sauce, and diet coke. Both of these are okay, it’s all about balance.

As 2020 comes to an end, I’m feeling really good about where I am in my healthy journey. Is my weight a little higher than it was last year? Sure, but that’s okay! Am I mentally at a better place than I was last year? You betcha! Health is not solely a number on the scale. It is a combination for sure.

This week’s recipe is a simple chicken and vegetable dish. It is a great way to detox from the week, and it is a crowd pleaser. It is easy to make and delicious! I hope you enjoy it as much as my family does.

Lemon Garlic Butter Chicken with Green Beans Ingredients: 3-6 boneless, skinless chicken thighs or chicken breasts 1 lb. fresh green beans, trimmed 3 tbsp. butter, divided 4 garlic cloves, minced 1 tsp paprika 1 tsp onion powder Salt and pepper to taste Juice of ½ lemon Lemon slices for garnish ½ cup chicken stock 1 tbsp. hot sauce ¼ tsp crushed red pepper flakes ½ cup fresh parsley, chopped

Directions: In a small bowl, combine onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper. Season chicken thighs or breasts generously with the spice mixture.

Place green beans in a microwave safe dish with ½ cup water.

Cook in the microwave for 8-10 minutes until almost done but still crisp.

Melt 2 tablespoons of butter in a large skillet over medium low heat. Lay the seasoned chicken in one layer in the skillet. Cook for 5-6 minutes, then flip and cook an additional 5-6 minutes until cooked through. Transfer chicken to a plate In the same skillet, lower the heat and melt the remaining tablespoon of butter. Add chopped parsley, garlic, hot sauce, red pepper flakes, and pre-cooked green beans and cook for 4-5 minutes. Add lemon juice and chicken stock and reduce the sauce until slightly thickened.

Add cooked chicken back to pan. Garnish with lemon slices and enjoy!

Your Intentions Don’t Always Matter

As I go through life, it seems that more import is often given to people’s intentions than their actions. As I was pondering that, a story came to mind. Uzza was a fella back in King David’s day that earned himself a place in history for doing what was right…doing what was right, but getting smitten down by Yah for doing it.

carried by priests. There were rings built into the corners that long poles were put through so that the priests could carry it without ever touching it.

David somehow passed over that part and assumed that putting it on a cart was just hunky-dory.

I am sure that he meant zero disrespect for Yah, but that didn’t matter.

His assumption caused a man to be struck down by his Creator for doing the right thing.

One interesting thing about Uzza is that his name means strength.

I imagine him being a burly young man in the prime of his life. He and

As long as he did it with honor and he had good intentions, right? But it cost a man his life; a man who may not even have known that the Ark was not intended to travel that way. I can imagine Yah saying; “Hey, man, sorry about that. Nothing personal, but I had to drop you. My boy David just wasn’t taking my instructions seriously enough. You’re cool with me, though. Ya done good.” So, yeah. Intentions matter, but actions matter more.

Tom and Robin Gerrish came up with an idea to bless the first responders of North Alabama who have served so tirelessly in the past year, and here is how you can be a part of it: “We are starting a Go Fund Me to shower Limestone County and Athens City law enforcement officers with a prayed over, gift wrapped copy of the book prior to Christmas.” Tom spent his career in the Army, and Robin is a realtor for Crye-Leike.

She also is certified to help soldiers find homes and get settled well.

Robin then shared their idea with our Limestone Leaders Business Network International group, who quickly caught the vision and decided to help tell the Ps 91 story to the people of Limestone County, and invite them to participate. Tom and Robin went on to say, “What better time to show thanks and support to our law enforcement officers? Protecting our country is a dangerous job.”

However, their vision is not confined to Athens-Limestone County. They would first love

Staying On Track

The weather is finally changing. With the cooler temperatures, comes more time inside on the couch and holiday baking and cooking but separation from normal holiday events, which means we have to stay even more focused on our nutritional habits because these things tend to make us less active and more snack prone.

A big part of staying on track is simply being disciplined in dayto-day life so that when it comes time for those rare moments when we get to step out and dress up in today’s world, you can enjoy a few of those indulgences the season brings without guilt or fear of it destroying your hard work. Now is the perfect time to really focus on your favorite way to stay active and make sure you stick to it at least 3 to 4 days a week.

Have a friend you check in with daily to hold you accountable for exercising and maybe even for some basic aspects of daily nutrition.

Save the treats for when you are out. For example, don’t make baking the holiday goodies your pastime...make it, have a bite or two, and then give it away to your favorite people. This limits the temptation and keeps your nibbling to a minimum. Also, make your grocery list at home with a good healthy menu for the week; and then when you get to the store, stick to your list. Don’t give in to the seasonal specials that you will inevitably see on every end cap at the store. Even better, use grocery pick-up or

delivery. This keeps your exposure low with absolutely no temptations in the store!

If you do get to go to any gatherings, stick to small portions of only your most favorite items! Maybe even eat a small, healthy and well-balanced meal prior to going so that you are not as hungry, therefore lessening the temptation to over indulge.

When choosing from the amazing food spreads you will be faced with at gatherings, remember the best choice is always the ones where you

can clearly distinguish the ingredients. Casseroles and things covered in heavy sauces pack a huge punch you don’t really want, while allnatural whole foods will fill you up and tend to be less detrimental to your body.

The last major tip I have for you is to drink at least 84 ounces of water every day. Staying well hydrated each day is another way to battle the cravings and temptations.

And finally, choose your beverage wisely at the party. Steer clear of the alcohol and

sugary drinks, at least in excessive amounts.

Choosing water keeps you not only feeling good, but also helps the body better process the treats you are consuming. Enjoy the season and all the fun, but as the old saying goes, “Do everything in moderation,” even at home. Don’t let the changes of the year destroy your goals and hard work!

really wanted to do was public relations. Dr. John Forde, who was the chair of the Communication Department at Mississippi State is the one who helped Blake discover his true calling, and while he still loves the weather, what he loves far more is helping local small businesses grow and thrive.

Backing up a bit, when Blake was a junior at East Limestone High School, he started interning at the Limestone County Commission, helping out with social media and website production. He also helped with East’s annual Veterans’ Day Breakfast, helped at his church, and volunteered for Main Street, Grease Festival, Sippin’ Cider, the American Cancer Society and Relay for Life. During his college years, he interned for two summers at WHNT News 19. He was involved in news production and was part of the digital team, worked the SEC Football Media Days in Atlanta and Hoover, and helped give Alabama fans a behind-the-scenes look from the 2018 Orange Bowl in Miami.

He went on to finish his bachelor’s degree in communications with a concentration in public relations, and decided to go into business for himself.

Blake Williams Communications was born on August 10, 2020.

For the first time, the parade featured live streaming coverage of the event for those who did not want to brave the weather or come out during the COVID-19 pandemic, but still desired to participate. That is an example of Blake using media to make events “current.”

Blake has a team to help him out, including a graphic designer, photographer, lawyer, accountant, and videographer. That frees him up to build relationships in the community, build a network, and build brands. He is also pursuing additional certification in public relations as well as a travel marketing professional.

Looking ahead to 2021, Blake will be working with the Limestone County Economic Development Association to promote and develop our local workforce and work to build more beneficial relationships throughout the North Alabama market to help his clients accomplish their goals.

In 2017, Blake’s work ethic, skill with social media, and eye for detail actually helped his high school alma mater recover close to $300,000 in band equipment, along with the truck and trailer that had been stolen. Being able to be a help is something that Blake enjoys immensely, and doing so for his high school was especially gratifying.

One of the things I enjoy about Blake is his kindness toward people like me that have been more than somewhat resistant to social media. He doesn’t just throw stats and analytics at you, he loves to teach how to do it and why it’s important, and I for one most definitely need some help and coaching. Blake told me that he was undaunted by my resistance, and is always down for an opportunity to share his

Choose Your Own Adventure

The first few chapters were the formative parts. The story introduced the main characters, key conflicts, and the ultimate plot line. And then you reached a critical junction. Do you enter the mysterious cave alone or do you wait for help?

Each decision altered the trajectory of the story and onward you went into the new plot line.

Life, really, is not all that different. Every few months, maybe years, life presents an encounter, a challenging crossroad, or key decision point that potentially alters your current path. Some of us

charge into that mysterious cave. Others wait for help.

And then there are those that are figuratively paralyzed by the entire process and spend their time looking at the situation from all different angles. Each of these represent a choice.

You make the selection, turn the page, and begin the next chapter.

I often think of life as a book. Central to this thought is that I am my own protagonist surrounded by a cast of characters, many who come and go from the story. Some storylines are short and play out over weeks and months. Other storylines play out over years and decades. I also have a ten-

dency or natural inclination to compartmentalize most things in life. So it is no surprise that I often view big decisions as opportunities, a new chapter, if you will. Then it is up to me to choose the adventure I want to go on for the next few pages.

Several months ago, my family and I made a difficult decision to leave our community and relocate to Athens. My wife left behind a home she loved. My son said goodbye to all his friends. I left the community in which I started both a family and a business. It was time for us to choose our next adventure. We are writing that next chapter as we speak.

When you reach that critical juncture in a chooseyour-own-adventure book, you don’t know what awaits you. Sometimes, the choice leads to prosperity and a turn of good fortune. Other times, the character faces hardship, overcomes new challenges, or even faces their own demise. More than the choice we make, it is often our actions and response to the new provocations that ultimately creates the narrative for our story. Do we rise up and face the unknown in the cave? Do we join with our neighbors to explore the cave together?

Or do we let the narrative consume us and detract us from our purpose?

This year has been quite an adventure for all of us.

Each of us has faced different depths of adversity ranging from a pandemic, economic uncertainty, national unrest, and much more. As we bring 2020 to a close, it is important to remember that you are the protagonist of your own story. Life will always throw difficult decisions and experiences your way. Sometimes the right path is abundantly clear. More often, the route is rather obscure.

But each decision point is an opportunity to write the next chapter in the story of you. What do you want your story to be about in 2021?

The “Ant Solution” To A Happier Life

by Jerry Barksdale Do you sometimes feel overwhelmed by problems that seem too big to solve? Do you have the urge to give up and quit?

When that happens, it’s time to think like an ant. It’s big medicine and it won’t cost you a dime. I don’t minimize the power of prayer, but the Lord is far too busy keeping tabs on lying, cheating and corrupt politicians in Washington to be bothered with small problems that we can solve ourselves.

You’ve heard it said, and I believe it, “the Lord helps those who help themselves.”

For example, Joe Blow wakes in the morning depressed. He has no job and no income so he rolls over and goes back to sleep. He has smoked his last cigarette, drank his last beer and spent his last $2.00 on a lottery ticket. All hope is gone. He asks the Lord to let him win the lottery.

It’s time to invoke the “ant-solution,” a powerful self directive therapy. I was introduced to this concept in 1967 shortly after graduating law school. My employer, Bob French in Ft. Payne, Alabama dispatched me to court to defend our client who “allegedly” robbed a bank (he certainly did) and allegedly spent the money (he did that too), but denied he committed the crime (liar). It was my first trial.

My biggest fear wasn’t that my client would be convicted, but that I would either faint or wet my pants in court, maybe both. When confronted with danger, humans and animals will fight or take flight. I went in the flight mode when the

D.A. promised that he would send my client to prison for life.

“I won’t live that long,” my client whined. “You gotta save me.” Save him! I was worried about saving myself.

I returned to the office a defeated man, overwhelmed and ready to quit. “I can’t do this,” I said to Bob. “Sit down,” Bob said.

“Do you know how the ant ate the elephant?”

“Noo,” I replied… “One tiny bite at a time. He cut a sliver off his tail, chewed it and swallowed.” Bob said.

“Then what?” I asked.

“He sliced off another mouthful, swallowed it and kept doing so until he ate the whole elephant. Every problem in life can be reduced to the smallest part and

From that day forward when overwhelmed with adversity, I didn’t think of myself as a fancy pants lawyer wearing a pin stripe suit, silk tie and $200 shoes, but as a lowly ant chewing a slice of elephant tail.

Back to the Joe Blow. I recommend that Joe do the following after waking: First, say a simple prayer, “Lord kick my lazy carcass outta bed.

Amen.”

Once up, he pulls on his pants, socks and shirt. That’s progress.

The ant-solution is underway. He advised his wife to take a long walk

to calm her nerves and do her own nails and hair. Then he tells his kids to pull up their pants over their crack and start looking for a part time job. McDonalds is a good place to start. And if they cause any more problems at school the Old Testament “Wrath of God” will befall them when they arrive home.

The use of fear is time tested and it works.

When I was 16 years old and acting out at school, my sweet Mama asked the Lord to intervene and save me. He did. He sent his faithful servant, Principal B. L. Rich at East Limestone School to answer Mama’s prayer.

While he was lighting a fire on the seat of my Levis with a board, I reached a state of enlightenment. Problem solved.

Instead of spending his money on a lottery ticket and watching T.V. all day long, Joe departs home in search of employment. He does that each day – one small bite at a time. Eventually he will see results.

Remember, quantum leaps seldom occur in life. We move forward one step at a time. When you are down and out, remember how the ant ate the elephant. It’s powerful medicine. It works for me and will work for you.

His wife is fresh out of Xanax, her nails are a mess and she hasn’t had her hair done in over a week. She is nervy as a squirrel.

The kids are causing trouble at school and whining for a new pair of Nikes.

The cell phone bill is overdue and the cable company has threatened to turn off service before the Saturday game. The family is overwhelmed and

solved before moving to the next one.”

“It’s been said many times, many ways, Merry Christmas to you,” as the song goes. Christmas is here! The trees are up!

The lights are hung with care! People are visiting each other and spending time with their loved ones. But there is a place with many lonely souls that would love to be part of your Christmas.

Your local animal shelter or rescue.

Think about that for a minute. Some people think that buying a puppy for Christmas is a great idea. These shelters have puppies and some are big and small, young and old. Many have been abandoned, even downright left with their bag of toys and blankets, watching their human turn away from them because their family, for whatever reason, could not keep them. Go to these places and listen to the howls, look at their faces and see the sadness and how they look in your direction, and even notice that when your face is not the face they are looking for, watch how some will look past your legs to see if their family has come back for them.

Some of these dogs just give up and lay down.

The shelter workers try and work with them, but heartbreak is hard to get over. The older ones are often not even noticed.

Most of them just want a nice, loving place to call their own. I have witnessed dogs who get adopted brighten up when they realize they have a home.

Why am I talking about this so passionately?

Because history is repeating itself right now.

The animal shelters/rescues are full; and people are dumping their dogs so they can make room for that new puppy they might get for Christmas.

Puppies grow up too! I am not claiming that everyone is like this, but we all know someone who is. If someone is reading this and get angry with my position, then they should really look at themselves because the callousness of their heart is not unknown to the Heavenly Father. I speak to your anger (person who reads this and feels angry with me), and I boldly say that that angry feeling is your own guilt. Let that marinate on your soul for a bit, and I hope that it will not remain for long. I used to have a Bible verse on

here that I have memorized or seared into my memory: Proverbs 12:10 - “A righteous man regardeth the life of his animal, but the tender mercies of the wicked are cruel.”

So, think about what your Christmas plans will be this year. If a puppy is what you want, try going to the shelters/rescues first. I challenge everyone to also look at the older dogs because they are already past the point of puppyhood. Puppies are just like children, they will go through stages of growth and messes. They are also going to try your patience, if allowed. So, if patience is not your thing, get an older dog.

If a pureblood is what is sought, then go to a reputable breeder. Pray on these things first, and then go seek what is in your heart.

We each live as we are called. I feel called to be here for dogs. Some don’t like my stance on dogs because if the building is on fire, I will get the dog out first before the human. That is just the way it is.

Now for the last word on the subject, puppies and dogs are a lifelong commitment. They come into our homes with love and loyalty. They deserve the same in return. Each breed of dog is different; so know what you’re getting before falling for the adorable look. If your idea of a dog is to put a chain on its neck and leave it outside with no attention at all, then don’t get a dog! They have feelings too and deserve better. I have said this before and I will say it a thousand times more before I am through with this life, a dog promises

Planning For The Holidays During COVID

For many people, the holiday season will look very different this year. Often the last few months of the year are busy with parties and visiting family and friends. But with COVID, things like traveling and large get-togethers may not be possible.

Many people have lost loved ones, their jobs, and are dealing with fidnancial stress. Others, like healthcare workers, may be working overo time and are unable to I take as much time off d as they usually can. t It will be difficult to t cope with these kinds , of changes, espeo cially if certain holio days are the only time w you can see some of s your loved ones. If ; you live with a mens tal health challenge, y you might have an t especially difficult . time with the uncertainty and change of plans this year. Many people with mental health conditions find consistency important in their reecovery, especially during times of high stress…like holidays and now the pandemic. Sudden shifts in tradition can cause people to feel an extreme loss of control

on top of disappointment. Change is difficult for most people, but that doesn’t mean that the holidays are destined to be a disappointment this year. Let’s look at some ways to cope with the tough feelings you may be having, while still enjoying the season.

Begin by identifying how you are feeling.

Figuring out your emotions about the upcoming holidays can make things feel less overwhelming. Many of us are experiencing a lot of different emotions all at once right now, which is hard for our brains to process. This year has been difficult for many reasons, and that means that some of your distress is probably relat-

ed to things other than the holidays. It is completely normal for you to be feeling a bit more emotional than usual right now. You can sort through these feelings by journaling, talking to friends and family, or just spending some quiet time alone. While the holidays are mainly about thankfulness and celebration, this can be a really hard time of year, even during normal circumstances. If you are missing a loved one, think of ways to honor them during the festivities. If you lost a job or had to drop out of school, take the time to recognize and accept the challenges that go along with these losses. Even if you haven’t lost any-

thing specific, we’ve all lost our sense of normalcy this year; so it’s okay to grieve that during this time.

There’s no denying that our lives will be different this year, but holidays don’t need to be cancelled, or even minimized. You can still send sweets to your friends and family, make your favorite meals, decorate your home, make gingerbread houses, or watch your favorite movies.

For the things you can’t do, brainstorm how to adapt them during COVID. Come up with virtual games to play over Zoom, or plan a small gathering outdoors if possible. Try to remember that while your holiday season may normal-

ly be full of excitement and joy, it can also be a time of high stress. So even though you may be giving up some of your favorite things about the holidays this year, you’re probably leaving behind some stressors too…days of travel, todo lists, dinner planning, etc. You don’t need to be happy about this, but be careful not to distort the situation and make it seem worse than it really is.

This year, practicing gratitude is more important than ever. While it may seem harder to find things to appreciate, there is still plenty to be thankful for. Make a conscious effort to regularly identify things as broad as your health, or something as specific as your favorite song playing on the radio. Change is hard but it isn’t always bad.

There are still ways to celebrate the season with your loved ones, even if you must give up some of your favorite traditions. Find creative ways to adapt or start new traditions... they may even add more meaning to your holiday season.

Mirror, Mirror On The Wall

Women around the world have something common -- the desire to be attractive. Women have always searched for ways to appear and become more beautiful. It is the most soughtafter attribute since the beginning of time. Flawless skin, thick and shiny hair, and well-kept nails are all traits women seek. Passed down from generations, young women learn different techniques to improve their beauty. Our grandmothers learned from their grandmothers how to keep their skin and hair moisturized and looking good.

From sticking their face in the cream bucket, or using Vaseline to take off their makeup, they learned how to take better care of themselves.

Beauty, though, is a rare and delicate thing. If someone would have asked Marilyn Monroe what it was like to be a bombshell, her answer would have probably shocked you. She would have shrugged her shoulders and said, “It’s not that great.” Years of broken relationships, being beautiful and famous, couldn’t really give her what she wanted.

She wanted to feel loved,

and feel like she was good enough, something no man could give her because of her childhood in an orphanage.

The truth is, a lot of woman feel exactly the same way.

Our beauty is rated, our youth sought after. Some are even willing to do just about anything to get it. The problem is not that they don’t find beauty; the problem is that once they have it, they still feel inadequate. “Well, now what,” they think. “What do I have to try next?” All of these lotions, potions, and surgeries won’t give women what they want if they can’t bring themselves to see the beauty they already have.

Many times, it is a man they desire that sets them out on this journey. Woman have been addicted to being beautiful for a man so they feel more fulfilled. The thing we seek the most is always just out of our reach. Because we give our beauty away too easily, we fail to see our true potential and put our fate in someone else’s hand.

Women from around the world have discovered that they are just as important as men. It is becoming very unpopular to abuse woman and treat them second rate.

Throughout history we see

women who were not willing to be considered property or thrown away because their youthfulness was gone.

That is the reason I hesitate to tell you my best beauty secret. All the vitamins I take and my personal beauty regimen is only one part of the equation. I try to make every human I meet feel more beautiful, unless they lose my respect, and then I just kindly withdraw while refusing to play their game. You can spend all your time becoming more attractive, but the minute you put someone down, you lose something.

We have all been guilty of this at one time or another.

We need to remember that there will always be someone as beautiful or more so. If you can’t come to terms with that and let inner beauty be the most powerful thing that does not ever fade, then you will be miserable. We are all unique and masterpieces in our own right. When you can see beauty in someone that most don’t see, you will have

found the greatest beauty secret of all.

In contrast, Cleopatra treacherously weaponized beauty to bring the Roman Empire to its knees. She used olive oil on her hair, took milks baths, used black eyeliner, and Jasmine so they could smell before her ship came into port. She was renowned for her beauty; but there are many who said she was not that pretty. How could this woman do all that, destroy an entire empire to save hers, pit two men against each other, and create a legacy still revered today and not be that physically attractive? Because she was an artist, she created an illusion that was deceptive, breathtaking, and effective. She was able to captivate a man with a single glance. Her self-care was impeccable, she held a high opinion of herself, and understood the art of self-preservation. She took amazing care of herself. By comparison, taking care of our health and practicing self-care for

the right reasons allows us to find the best and most attractive version of ourselves.
