I have a love-hate relationship with what has come to be known in America as “Awards Season.” Most of the time you have to squint and wince to see past inflated egos in order to find any redeemable God-given talent; often you really have to prepare yourself for all manner of bizarre and/or inappropriate fashion or political statements. Sometimes you just groan and shake your head, wondering if all the world has gone daft.

Sometimes I have yelled at the TV, as though it had any control over people’s choices, artistic or otherwise.

And yes, I do realize that I have control over the remote, but what fun is that?

However, there is a sassy little songstress by the name of Joy Villa who has successfully and royally rankled the Hollywood and Nashville creative establishment, and is currently laughing all the way to the bank. She made history for her notable moxie at the recent Grammy Awards, and to me her story is utterly refreshing as well as worth the telling.

First, we are going to look at Joy’s appearance, the wonderfully diverse package in which she lives. Next, we will discuss her dress designer, along with the now iconic dress Joy wore to the Grammys. Finally, we will discuss the blowback as well as her currently burgeoning bank account.

Her mother was African American and Choctaw, and Joy sports a ‘fro that vies that of Angela Davis, as well as cheekbones that would make Senator Elizabeth Warren green with envy. The coup d’état is that Joy is married to a Danish photographer and writer by the name of Thorsten Overgaard, and he happens to be nearly a quarter century her senior.

Joy’s dress designer, Andre Soriano, legally immigrated to the United States from the Philippines and is homosexual. He is also by his own admission a Trump supporter, a lover of America, and according to one interview, he said the dress is made out of a Trump flag he had flying at his house. When Andre heard statements made at the Women’s March suggesting that it would be a good idea to blow up the White House, he had had enough. He told Joy, “You know what? We have to make a statement, we have to put America together, and we have to promote love. And since her music is

about love, and I have this Trump flag in front of my house, I’m like, ‘I’m going to make you a Trump gown, sweetheart,’ and then that’s what happened.”

So, Joy arrives at the Grammys doing deep cover in a white cloak, removes the cloak, struts the gown, and boy, then it was on like Donkey Kong. The ever tolerant and love-centric Left called for her death, literally, or at the very least, the death of what they felt was a pathetic career. She was called a “red carpet troll,” as well as other things which cannot be printed, but I don’t think

anyone in their wildest dreams and/or nightmares could have anticipated what happened next.

On Sunday night prior to Joy’s gutsy move, her 2014 album, ironically entitled, I Make The Static was listed on Amazon at number 543,502. Honestly, I had no idea they had ratings that went down by half a million, but there it was. And then, it blasted up to the Number 1 slot, past Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, et al, and it was still there when we went to print. As is the case with so many things going on today, the only thing you can do when something like this happens is scratch your head and mutter something along the lines of “Only in America.” Joy Villa has intestinal fortitude, and our country is rewarding her for it far more than it is vilifying her. When asked why she did what she did, Joy said simply, "You can either stand for what you believe in or fall for what you don't." I couldn’t agree more.

Mikey Weinstein is at it again. For those of you who are not familiar with this fellow, he is the president and founder of the Military Religious Freedom Foundation. Please understand, for my purposes, Mikey is not interested in protecting anyone’s religious freedom.

He is interested in making sure there is no trace of faith of any kind to be seen anywhere when it comes to our military bases. Mikey is the one who has been unhappy with Air Force Cadets putting scriptures on their white boards outside of their dorm rooms.

Mikey was also unhappy that MWR hotel facilities had Bibles in the drawers of the nightstands, and successfully had them removed in order to “avoid

offense.”

It is at this point that I want to send everyone involved on a mandatory field trip to Yemen just to gain some perspective on true second-class citizenship, but thankfully, so far the Air Force is standing firm. Schrag told Military.com, "The posters do not officially endorse, disapprove of, or extend preferential treatment for any faith, belief, or absence of belief, which is the standard established by regulation that would warrant action."

In Building 602, there is a poster that has lights where the Twin Towers used to be before 9/11. They look like reverse spotlights, and the inspirational text reads as follows: "Men cannot live without faith except for brief moments of anarchy or despair. Faith leads to convictions -- and convictions lead to action.

Athens Now Spotlight On Tina Cook

by Ali Elizabeth Turner Tina Cook is well known in our community as the hard working Director of the Family Resource Center located on Jefferson Street, and I first met her at the monthly Chamber of Commerce coffees that are held at various businesses in our area. I immediately liked her, and one of the things that impressed me is that she is both uncommonly transparent and intensely joyful. I became aware that she has a personal “death, burial and resurrection story,” and seeing as we are coming upon the season of Resurrection and Passover, now seemed the appropriate time to tell it.

The abortion also made it so she would never have children. By the time she graduated from West Limestone High School, she was running stretched out down the wrong road.

She would disappear for months and sometimes years

Tina has extensive knowledge of what it takes to overcome addictions, both from her personal life as well as her studies. She holds a Bachelor’s degree from City Vision University in Christian Addiction Studies and Urban Missions, and all of it was a perfect training ground for her new life. It takes guts to come back and rebuild in the same spot where it all went bad, but that’s what she felt she was being called to do, and rebuild she most definitely has. One of her favorite scriptures is Philemon 1:10-11, talking about Onesimus. “Formerly he was useless, but now he has become useful to you and to me.”

This woman inspires me, and I hope you are blessed by her story. If you are struggling, please know there is hope. Tina lives it, and you can, too.

We prayed and thanked God for all the ways He is blessing Athens and asked for the wisdom to make it shine even more brightly as a “healthy, lovable city.” Then it was time for Ronnie to roll.

Kageyama puts a city’s functionality and safety at the bottom and works up to the top where he puts the category of fun/ interesting. “You have to take care of the potholes, and people have to be kept safe,” said Mayor Ronnie, “but that can’t be your only focus.”

be negative. Negativity requires so much less effort than what it takes to be positive. To my knowledge, there is no medication out there that is designed to make you hate life. There’s plenty out there for you to enjoy life, but none exist to bring you down from your emotional high.

I oftentimes get complimented on my attitude, and from a business perspective I relish in this. When customers notice my positive attitude, I realize they are not receiving this same energy level down the street. Your positive attitude can set you apart from your competition.

When your customers feel uplifted by your daily approach, they will want to do busi-

ness with you. Before you can get to this point though, you are going to have to work on your mindset.

We have all overcome obstacles that have stood in our way. Personally, my father died when I was 15 years old and my mom abandoned me less than 2

years later. I could have been negative. I should have dropped out of high school, gotten mixed up in drugs or become a statistic you read about in the paper. I should have never graduated high school, let alone college. I did, though. All because of my attitude.

Do not get me wrong; there were many lonely nights I found myself crying out to God just asking, “Why me?” For several years I took the victim mentality that I “had it so rough,” but then I realized there are people out there who have it worse than I do.

This helped change my way of thinking.

Being able to reflect upon the obstacles others faced helped me to realize what I was going through was easy compared to what others were facing.

As you are reading this, I want you to realize that the way you conduct business and your life needs to change today. You can make a difference to your customers, and I urge you to let your positiveness shine through to them.

No matter what your definition of attitude has been, I want you to start today by realizing that Attitude IS Everything. Go be the difference you want in the world.

Meet Chief Warrant Officer 4 (CW4) Anthony Lindner

by Sandra Thompson, Director, Alabama Veterans’ Museum Meet Chief Warrant Officer 4 (CW4) Anthony Lindner.

Anthony was born in Esslingen, Germany in 1947.

His father, an American soldier who was part of the Normandy invasion, decided to stay in Germany after he was released from the military; he worked for one of the first Army Air Force Exchange Services (AAFES.) Unfortunately, his father passed away shortly after Anthony was born, and he went to live with his grandparents until the age of 11 when his mother remarried. They then came to the United States and moved to North Carolina.

Anthony became a US citizen at the age of 18, after graduating high school.

After attending basic training at Ft. Bragg, NC, and Advanced Infantry Training (AIT) at Ft. Gordon, GA, he went to jump school at

citement, as if being a Green Beret was not challenging enough, after reenlistment Anthony decided to earn his wings. He went to flight school at Ft. Wolters, TX, and finished his aviation training at Ft. Rucker, AL. He was now qualified to fly the TH55, TH13 and UH1 helicopters. His other assignments include Ft. Riley, KS; Ft. Sam Houston, TX; Germany; and Ft. Campbell, KY. He also completed a tour in the Republic of Vietnam.

Anthony’s most memorable experiences include night combat jumps in the jungles of Panama and flying medevac missions in the Republic of Vietnam. These were the most memorable because of the adventure and the opportunity to save lives in Vietnam.

After serving twenty years in the Army, Anthony retired in 1987 and began a second

career as a commercial airline pilot. He flew as a pilot on an EMB120 Brazilia, a Delta Commuter for Atlantic Southeast Airlines and then as first officer in a Boeing 757 for Eastern

Airlines. He then went on to have a third career as an insurance agent for Farmers Insurance for about 13 years. He finally retired for good in 2008.

Anthony is a member of the Vietnam Veterans Association (VVA) Chapter 511, and he is also active in the North Alabama Helicopter Pilots Association (NAHPA.) As part of the NAHPA, he strives to meet the mission of the organization to enhance and accredit the cohesiveness, esprit de corps, and traditions of valor of rotary wing aircrews that flew in Southeast Asia during the Vietnam Era. Anthony has 3 children – two sons, Mario and Jacob, and a daughter, Sue. He enjoys volunteering at the museum because of the camaraderie between the veterans.

The Elk River – What Is Our Personal Responsibility?

by Lynne Hart Every morning I get out of bed and take water for granted. I flush, shower, brush, make coffee, and wash my breakfast dishes. Water.

It’s just there.

Where does all the water that flows through our pipes and into our homes come from?

Whether you live in the City of Athens or elsewhere in Limestone County, that water comes from the Elk River.

Over 14 million gallons per day is drawn from the Elk River, purified, and sent to our homes and businesses.

That alone is a good reason for us to want to keep our river clean; however, there are many other reasons. The Elk River also provides opportunities for recreation, as our cleanup logo reflects. Picnics, fishing, boating, hiking, enjoying nature, canoeing, kayaking, camping, and bird watching are just a few of the activities that take place on or near the Elk River.

It is a tremendous resource to Athens and Limestone County.

Vegan Creole Fried Rice

1 tbsp. avocado oil 1 c. jasmine rice 1 1/2 c. vegetable stock 2 stalks of celery, chopped 1 large onion, chopped 1 red or yellow bell pepper, diced 3 c. frozen sliced okra 3 cloves garlic, minced One 15 oz. can of black beans, drained 1 tsp. each of dried oregano, thyme, paprika, cayenne pepper 1 tsp. each of salt & pepper In a medium saucepan, add your rice and broth. Bring to a boil then cover and simmer for 15 minutes.

Heat oil in a large skillet. Add onions and celery. Cook until tender, or if you like your veggies crunchy, cook 10 minutes. Add bell pepper, okra, beans and all of the spices. Cook 15 minutes.

Add garlic. Add rice to mixture and stir well to coat the rice.

Ways to Conquer

He is usually depicted as the righteous thief, the valiant and defiant defender of the poor. The history of England surrounding Robin Hood’s origin presents a starkly different story.

12th century England was overwhelmed by war and debt. Predictably, the poorest of society began to revolt because many were taxed into poverty.

Because the distinction is not clarified, those that advocate for governmental redistribution of wealth attempt to reframe the ‘Robin Hood’ type of virtue for themselves.

that someone not be offensive, they are demanding that they “be nice.” The Judeo-Christian worldview stresses that one should be wise. It asserts, “Listen to counsel and receive instruction, that you may be wise.” Sometimes that manifests itself as admitting when one is wrong.

Now, Robin Hood may not have been a social justice rebel. He might have simply been a libertarian in a feudalist, authoritarian system. In Feudalism, a serf or vassal was given

land to work and fight for a lord or king. King John took advantage of his brother’s, King Richard’s, absence while King Richard was at war. Instead of managing the kingdom on low taxes, so the lords and serfs could efficiently steward the land, he raised taxes and eventually starved the people. Robin Hood’s opposition to King John may not have been theft. It might have simply been refusing to pay exorbitant and unfair taxes.

If Robin Hood was indeed stealing from King John, it is still immoral.

No different than when Les Miserables’ Jean Valjean is stealing from Bishop Myriel. Stealing is wrong. Period.Today, taxing only the rich is presented as a moral and “nice” thing to do. The reality is that the demand for equal wealth is taxing a targeted group at an unequal rate. That is a serious contradiction.

Founding father John Adams stated, “There are two ways to conquer and enslave a country.

One is by the sword.The other is by debt."

Like it or not, socialism and communism use both to conquer not only a country, but the culture as well. Government is a sword, or in the present case a gun.

When someone does not pay their taxes, they go to jail like Al Capone did when America was cracking down on the mob. However, someone like Al Sharpton goes untouched because he forwards the left’s agenda. When the law does not judge impartially, it fails morally. It is neither wise nor healthy nor moral to drown a society in debt.

Former U.K. Prime Minister Benjamin Disraeli truly stated, “Debt is the prolific mother of folly and of crime.” The deeper the United States has fallen into debt, the more prevalent corruption and unrest has become. It is time to think on Robin Hood as a governmental-libertarian, not a leftwing, socialist advocate.

It is not advised that one not pay their taxes. If the issue is to limit the percentage that someone is taxed, the solution is to continue to work toward relying on the government less. Expressing one’s desire for independence will not come with an increase in government-funded social services. Both cannot and will not coexist.

The word “nice” comes from the Latin root word for ignorant. The virtue of niceness is not a Judeo-Christian principle.

Laney’s Salon: Downtown Digs And “DevaCurls”

Lane is a Calhoun graduate, and opened her first shop in 2008. She moved to her current location at 406 Shaw Street in Athens last Memorial Day. “I always wanted to be in the downtown area,” she said, “and I really love our new place. It is so peaceful, and it’s much safer than the other location. There’s also much more parking available, and the fact that the speed limit is 30 miles per hour just makes it more relaxed all the way around.”

From 2010-2016, Laney’s Salon had a party service called “Enchanted Belles,” where girls could come for a birthday party and get their hair and nails done, with perhaps a touch of make-up.

It was highly successful, but there is no room at the new salon to continue that part of the business.

One of the things that I find interesting about Lane’s work philosophy, and that of the rest of the stylists in the shop, is that they truly are only interested in doing “all things hair.” For several years Laney’s Salon did nails, and while the new location has a tanning bed in a single booth, the bed is not hooked up, and there is no plan for it to be. “We just want to do hair,” Laney said.

Business in the new locale has been good, proven by the fact that most of their clientele book by appointment, and there are few walk-ins.

A good chunk of their original clients came with them to the Shaw Street address, and they enjoy watching walk-ins become “raving fan customers.” Laney told

me that “the shop is for everyone. We have lots of men, as well as kids,” and one of their unique features is that they offer what is known as a “DevaCut by DevaCurl” coiffure, which she explained as follows: “DevaCurl” is a trademarked method of using only shears to dry-cut hair that is naturally wavy to über-curly.

It also works for hair that has a perm. It was developed in New York in 1994, specifically because most women of any background whose hair is curly tend to be very unhappy with their hair. To make things tougher, they are often surrounded by wellmeaning people who say,

Balance has many components. Muscular endurance, postural control, aerobic capacity, joint flexibility, muscular strength, inner ear health, response time, age, sex and eyesight all contribute towards the balance and maintenance of equilibrium at all times in any posture. With every year, as we age, we have an increased tendency to show a decline in physical function that ultimately leads to reduction in balance and a greater incidence in falls.

Fall prevention is crucial for continued independence as we age.

“One out of every three adults age 65 or older falls each year” (CDC,

2010).

Falls are the leading cause of death due to an injury; and falls are one of the most common causes of non fatal injuries and hospitalizations among individuals 65 and older.

Fear of falling can result in a chronic cycle of inactivity, muscle atrophy and weakness, which results in an even great incidence of falling. See the cycle below: Fear of falling ► reduced activity levels or inactivity ► reduced range of motion ► reduced muscle strength and cardiovascular fitness ► more errors in movements ► unstable posture ► decrease in balance ► higher fear of falling ► more inac-

tivity ►……..

According to current statistics, falling is a serious problem; and balance training can play an important role in fall prevention.

Exercises that overload the postural system are needed to correctly challenge and improve balance.

Multi-directional and multi-planar movements typical of activities for daily living are also needed in a good program.

A personal trainer can develop a great workout that includes specific exercises for balance and activities for daily liv-

ing. For those whose fear of falling is al-

ready preventing them from participating in an exercise program, the water can provide a lower risk setting. A personal trainer familiar with water programs can provide an excellent water workout to increase muscle endurance, postural control, aerobic capacity, joint flexibility, muscular strength and reaction time – all those contributors to balance maintenance.

The maintenance of balance is important in preserving an independent lifestyle. Some people think that increased risk of falling is part of getting older, but exercise will decrease almost all the risk factors attributed to fall risk.

“If you don’t use it, you lose it” is true for functional balance.

There will be door prizes and other giveaways sponsored by the vendors, and lots of activities for the kids.

Keep Athens Limestone Beautiful’s mascot, Sparky, will be providing photo ops with the kids, and KALB’s Director, Lynne Hart, told me that “Sparky will have goodies to give to the children.” Sparky will be appearing two times on Saturday: from 10:00 to 10:30 a.m. and from 1:00 to 1:30 p.m. There will also be a kid’s planting activity, also held twice on Saturday, from 10:30 til noon and 1:30 till 3 p.m.

Representatives from every aspect of home improvement will be present, from HVAC to roofs to windows to siding to plumbing to financing to more. For your garden, there will be people from a big-box store as well as a large local nursery. For your home’s interior, you can find help with custom picture framing, lighting, furniture selection, remodeling and radon detec-

tion. And, if all the choices before you make you feel stressed, there will be professional massage therapists to help with that.

And let’s not forget the name brand items we have to have for that polished and sophisticated look. Well, we can dress the part and we can look the part, but it doesn’t change who we really are on the inside. I am reminded of the scripture in Matthew 23: 26 “… cleanse first that which is within the cup and platter that the outside of them may be clean also.”

How quick we are to start with the outside, without

real regard for our inner appearance. Yes, it is easier to conceal the inside, keeping it all behind our so-called flawless look; we are apt to think if we don’t tell it or share it and just keep it to ourselves, then no one will know those internal thoughts, struggles, stresses, aches, and pains.

Little do we realize how it seeps through and in some instances, those inward parts of us we tucked so deeply within are actually glaring to those around us. Who are we really fooling?

Antibiotic Overuse And Its Role In Drug Resistant Infections

by Dr. Shanna Ndong We are in the midst of cold and flu season, and I have recently seen an uptick in clinic visits for upper respiratory infections.

Common complaints include sore throat, cough, nasal congestion, and low-grade fever, and I often feel pressure by patients to prescribe antibiotics for their symptoms.

However, most upper respiratory infections are caused by viruses and are not improved by a course of antibiotics.

Antibiotics treat bacterial infections like strep throat, certain kinds of pneumonia, skin infections, and urinary tract infections. Antibiotics are vital to modern medicine and have led to a dramatic reduction in illness and death from infectious diseases. However, very few new antimicrobial drugs have been introduced over the last thirty years and taking antibiotics unnecessarily can lead to an increase in strains of bacteria that are resistant to most or all current antibiotics.

Drug-resistant bacteria can also spread from farms through agricultural workers, flies, and trucks that haul livestock and can accumulate in manure that is spread on fields and enter waterways.

Antibiotic-resistant infections affect 2 million people and are associated with 23,000 deaths annually in the United States. Antibiotic resistance is a major public health concern that limits available treatments and increases costs because of the need for more expensive drugs and longer treatment courses.

Almost all bacteria have the ability to change or mutate to become less susceptible to drug threats, but the more that antibiotics are used, the more opportunities bacteria have to evolve to resist them. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that half of all prescribed antibiotics are unnecessary or inappropriate as written. The following scenario takes place from start to finish, in about two minutes. As the threat evolves, you need to have a plan in place about what to do.

Late one Sunday afternoon, you are sitting in your home watching TV when you hear some loud, angry voices outside your home. After a few moments, you get up and go to the window to see what is happening.

You see a man standing in the street, shouting profanities at your neighbor across the street. You see a women standing on your neighbor’s front porch. She is yelling, “Please leave, just leave!” You do not recognize her or the stranger standing out in the street, but you assume she is the neighbor’s adult daughter.

Suddenly, the angry man charges up the sidewalk toward the women who turns and dashes into the house. The angry stranger slams his body against the door but does not gain entry.

By now, another neighbor has come out of his home to see what the disturbance is all about.

ing at him. Now you are the target of his anger, and he starts running towards your home yelling profanities and threats. You turn and run into your kitchen where you dial 911.

As the 911 operator comes on the line, you realize how nervous you are. Your own voice sounds strange as

you shout into the phone, “Send help fast! There is a crazy man threatening me and my neighbors!” The 911 operator seems to be asking useless questions.

You are trying to answer her when there is a loud crashing sound coming from your front door. You scream into your phone, “He is trying to crash through my front door!”

You drop your phone onto the kitchen counter and

run to your bedroom to retrieve your gun. Your hands are shaking as you check to make sure the gun is loaded. You realize you are out of breath and your heart is beating so hard it hurts. Back in the living room, you are horrified to see your front door has now got a fist-size hole

in it and the angry man’s hand is reaching through trying to turn the inside door knob.

Crazy things seem to flash through your mind. Who is this guy? Why is he coming after me? Why is my front door so easy to bust down? Isn’t this mad stranger hurting his hand?

OK, stop the clock. What you do next may change your life and the results may last forever. So far,

you are still safe but very scared. Some of you will come to the conclusion that you are in fear of great bodily harm or death, and deadly force is justified to stop the threat. Some of you may decide to simply retreat out your back door and get away from the danger. Some will decide to go out through the side door, flanking the attacker and taking the fight to him from behind, surprising him and stopping the threat with deadly force. That action may not be justified. Yes, many states are “castle doctrine,” aka “stand your ground states.” If you have retreated and are no longer in danger, is deadly force justified? What if there are other family members in your home – your spouse, your children or other people who could be in danger?

You must have a plan.

You cannot wait till something like the horrible events described above are occurring and then devise a plan of defense. You need to consider each of the possible actions you might take and the results of those actions. Make the wrong choice and you could end up being charged with a homicide, or you could end up being the victim of a homicide. You must have a plan.
