The Politics Of Protocol I just had the privilege of being invited to a media event at the recent National Religious Broadcaster’s conference held in Nashville, and while the term “life changing” gets bandied about way too much these days, indeed it was. The specific event to which I am referring was sponsored by an outfit based in Franklin, TN known as Proclaiming Justice To The Nations, a group of Christians who do all they can to get the true news out about what is going on in Israel.

Their purpose is alerting Christians and everyone who will listen as to the fantastically difficult situation being faced by Israel and Israelis on a daily basis.

Talk show host Dennis Prager was the keynote speaker, and his lecture on The Age Of Feelings was one of the most revelatory commentaries as to how we got to our current state of decline in Western society that I have ever heard, and will have to be addressed in another Publisher’s Point. His comments were timeless and philosophical, and the body of this piece will

be far more pragmatic.

I had the chance to chat with Joseph Farah, an Arab-American Christian who spent years covering the Middle East, himself a man who went to Israel with a liberal journalistic bias and came away a changed, conservative

fellow, largely due to the compassion he continually observed on the part of Israelis in their dealings with Arabs in Israel.

He currently publishes World Net Daily, and online news e-zine. CBN Middle East Bureau Chief Chris Mitchell was another with whom I got to fellowship, as well as others who range from being

So, am I just name dropping, or do I have a point here? I have a point that is going to be illustrated by discussing protocol as it pertains to a Presidential visit. Not many would disagree that the Israelis, specifically Benjamin Neyanyahu, have been treated poorly by this administration on a number of occasions. And while I don’t know a great deal about protocol, I did learn some things while I was in Iraq, Jordan, and at the conference in Nashville. It can be summed up thusly: when you are a guest in another country, you do all that you can to accommodate your

host, and when you have guests, you do all that you can to accommodate your guests.

Itineraries are only changed when someone is bleeding or the house is on fire, so to speak. And our President, who should know better, decided it was not worth his time to get an in-depth tour of the Iron Dome, the Israeli defense system that has saved countless lives, as our ally continues to get attacked by its “neighbors.” So, Benjamin Netanyahu, who for the sake of protocol has continually bent over backwards to the point that he could double as a contortionist, brought a part of the Iron Dome to the President to be toured upon Mr. Obama’s arrival at Ben Gurion Airport. Please remember that Israel is our strongest ally in the Middle East, and has a vibrant democracy that is preserved largely by its extraordinary defense system. And, let it also be remembered that Israel uprooted some of its defense system because someone felt they needed to go visit the very people who want to destroy Israel, our ally.

Women’s History Month Celebration At the Vets’ Museum: Airman Mattye Murray To Be Honored, Mary Scott Hunter To Speak by Ali Elizabeth Turner Residents of Athens are in for a real treat on Saturday, March 30th at 1pm.

That is the day that Airman Mattye Murray will be honored as a Korean War era veteran, and Mary Scott Hunter of the Alabama State Board of Education will speak about the accomplishments of women in science, technology, engineering, and innovation, which is this year’s theme.

Mattye Murray was born in Athens in 1929, the daughter of sharecroppers. She was a graduate of Trinity High School, served in the Air Force, attended Tuskegee Institute, graduated from Alabama A& M, taught at her high school alma mater

“I was blessed to complete high school,” she said, and she graduated from Trinity in 1948. A few years later she joined the Air Force, spending 4 years in service to our country, and received training in food service.

She served amongst some of the Airmen of Tuskegee fame, and finished her military career in 1955.

She was able to get her bachelor’s degree in business education, and began her teaching career at Trinity in 1962. She taught there until 1970, when Trinity was closed. “We lived through desegregation,” a wild time for everyone. Spring is Springing

By Teresa Todd, President, Athens-Limestone County Tourism Association It’s March and the fun begins! You can find several things to do each weekend during March. One of the favorite is the annual Athens Home and Garden Show, hosted by the Greater Limestone County Chamber of Commerce.

The show will be Saturday March 16th from 9AM – 4PM and Sunday, March 17th from 12PM – 4PM at the Limestone County Event Center located at 100 West Pryor Street, Athens.

There is no admission fee.

The show will be filled with many demonstrations, an area for kid’s activities and door prizes also.

Over 50 booths will have all types of home and garden items for review and sale, as well as great ideas for your home and garden projects. It’s a great time to purchase those spring plants too. Contact: 256232-2600, www.tourathens.com.

Another special event this month is the Easter Egg

This Spring’s Planting Includes A New Garden Of Hope!

There is always refreshment to be found in the season of spring! What a welcome change of season to see the tiny budding of trees or the first of many yellow daffodils scattered throughout the area. During the month of March a new planting of sorts has taken place…. a wonderful scattering of the seeds of education, love and hope for our children’s future. You may have noticed the renovation work underway at a small home on 5th avenue. The outside has been beautifully updated and landscaped, but it is the inside of the home that is bright with hope and great ideas for the Athens community. Called The Haven, the home is the hub of

5. It’s located within easy walking distance of the tutors, teachers, and visionaries who design programs to support our community.

The team behind the idea is Mission Athens, local residents representing the Central Church of Christ, who saw a great need to partner with families in our area.

The partnership was created when they first responded to the call for help after the April 2011 Tornados. “For almost a week we were out working side by side with our community, clearing trees and replenishing household goods,” said Mission Athens board president Leonard Nicholson. “It just seemed a natural fit to continue that relationship by purchasing the house and providing a home base for future efforts including a feeding program, a women’s bible study and neigh-

Costs for such a program can be expensive, but Central Church of Christ and other churches participate in what they call the Dollar Club. It is an extra offering each week by each attendee providing a dollar to support programs above and beyond the church’s financial obligations. Now with the home paid for and refurbished with the help of volunteer time and effort, the real work is underway.

On Tuesdays and Thursdays community members not only support the children with tutoring, homework, and special areas of educational help as indicated by their teacher, but they are providing a mentoring partnership they expect to last a lifetime. The Mission Athens team has spent some time in Huntsville studying the Lincoln Village model, a model which has created a new spirit of neighborhood revitalization in our neighboring city. Families are supported and encouraged to make changes economically, educationally, emotionally and spiritually. Huntsville community members partner closely with residents on an ongoing basis, and have seen a dramatic improvement in economic stability which has been noted on a national level. “We have a successful program to model our Mission Athens after,” says Nicholson. “We, like Huntsville, know that great things are in store for us and our future, as long as we focus on the love of Christ in all that we do.”

We cleaned up litter, dragged tires and a television set from the water, dug up roofing materials, painted over graffiti, and removed invasive brush (with TVA permission).

TVA was able to remove a refrigerator from the river thanks to one of our volunteers in a canoe who spotted and marked its location.

When we returned to these areas two years later, they had NOT returned to the state in which we had originally found them! Our volunteers truly have made a long-term difference.

Several weeks back I had the honor of attending my daughter’s bridal shower hosted by her wonderful in-laws to be.

Procrastination

It’s been said that if it weren’t for deadlines nothing would get done. I’m supposed to write these articles every other week, but it seems like life finds a way for me to do other things. The sad thing is, it’s not always worthwhile things I end up doing instead of writing my article.

Sometimes, I put together a couple of online jigsaw puzzles before I get started. I’ll play some spider solitaire. I might watch an episode of Bones or (heavens!) do the dishes or fold laundry. It’s amazing what things can get in the way of doing what I should be doing first.

There have been scores of books written on the subject of Procrastination. As I look it up, there seem to be countless magazine articles and essays too. This is going to take a while to get through, and I’m going to need a glass of tea before I hunker down to write. Wouldn’t you know it, there’s no tea made.

The film was a study into the art of putting things off (graduation film from the Royal College of Art, 2007). In the video, they said procrastination was a cup of tea (I swear I did not even plan that!) or smoking a cigarette. Procrastination was doing eight things at once and not getting any of them done. It was starting something and not finishing it. It is not knowing when to finish something or not knowing HOW to finish something.

I don’t do the instant tea thing. As far as I’m concerned, any self respecting Southerner will steep it, mix in some sugar (probably too much), and drink it cold, and this process takes time to do properly.

After going through the rigmarole of making tea, I poured a tall glass ready to tackle this article. I recently purchased a new set of glasses and they look won-

derful. When you think about a photo of a glass of iced tea in a magazine, these would be the glasses.

They are simple, with just a slight flair in their shape, but not overly elaborate.

Best of all they are easy to clean. Speaking of which, did anyone do the dishes after dinner? No time for that, I have an article to write!

Google for relevant information about procrastination. Of course, I got the standard wiki articles, but I want to write something unique. Maybe a new and artistic take on the subject.

Weight Loss: A Simple Solution

about twice as much as they need. We are a wealthy nation and getting food is no problem for most people. It is everywhere. You can even put money in a machine and food will drop out.

The result is a nation where almost 60% of the population is overweight and over 30 percent of them are considered obese. This situation is putting tremendous pressure on the medical establishment. It has been estimated that the health issues associated with being overweight could cost over 3 billion dollars per year.

If something is not done about the obesity epidemic, this one problem could be the nail in the coffin that drives America into bankruptcy.

Someone who is only 15% over their ideal weight is 86% more likely to become diabetic. At this time there are over 25 million diabetics, and 79 million pre-diabetics in America. Diabetes already costs Americans 132 billion dollars a year, and that is at the present level of only 25 million confirmed cases. If the pre-diabetes patients become full-blown diabetics in the next five years, health care costs will increase to almost half a trillion dollars per year.

We must remember that we are only talking about diabetes when in reality being overweight also increases the risk of heart disease, cancer, stroke, respiratory problems, arthritis and many other disorders. Now you are

beginning to understand just how profound the obesity epidemic is in our society.

The Solution Believe it or not, there is a simple solution. You don’t have to count calories, go hungry or even diet. It is a system our family has used for years and we have successfully maintained a healthy weight.

Let me repeat myself. We never diet, eat foods we don’t like, or starve.

Americans have a mindset that drives us to overeat. We believe that we should always clean our plates. We should not be wasteful, after all there are starving children in the world. This was good advice back during the Depression, but it is not such good advice today.

We pile enough food on our plates to feed two or more people and then feel compelled to eat it all.

Restaurants put two times as much on the average plate than is actually necessary to sustain health.

Being overweight or obese is nothing more than overeating. Some people want us to believe it is a lack of exercise, but in reality we all know the computer geek that sits behind a computer all day, never getting any real exercise and is as slender as a pencil. Taking in more calories than we burn is the problem, yet most people find it hard to cut back.

Dieter’s DeLite A little over two-years ago, NEWtritional Health Care LLC formulated an all-natural weight loss supplement that will

Even though they eat basically the same type foods as Americans, they are healthier, mainly because they eat about half as much. Television watching is a strong obesity risk factor, partly because exposure to food advertising can influence what people eat. Exercise and physical activity can protect against weight gain. And w e are also finding lack of sleep is a risk factor for obesity.

Basically, obesity results when someone regularly eats or drinks more calories than needed. The body stores these extra calories as body fat, and as a result the extra pounds add up. Eat fewer calories than the body burns, weight goes down.

This equation is overly simple, because it does not account for the many factors that affect what we eat, how much we exercise, and how our bodies process all these calories. A complicated web surrounds a basic problem.

Genes play a role in obesity but not as much as many people believe. Genes seem to increase the risk of weight gain and interact with other risk factors in the environment, such as unhealthy diets and inactive lifestyles. A healthy lifestyle can counteract these genetic effects.

Early life is important. Pregnant mothers who smoke or who are overweight may have children who are more likely to grow up to be obese

adults. Excessive weight gain during infancy and early childhood also raises the risk of adult obesity.

Does Governor Bentley Share Obama’s Distaste For Legislators?

by Will Anderson The Governor was speaking at a school safety summit in Montgomery recently, and he indicated that he would veto a bill passed by the Legislature last month which would allow teachers and other volunteers in Franklin County, after being trained by local law enforcement, to carry guns in schools.

“You don’t get somebody just off the street to treat your congestive heart failure when you’re sick,” Bentley said at the summit. “So why do you get somebody off the street to protect you with active shooters?”

His analogy is flawed and condescending. Just as laymen can be trained in CPR to save lives before first responders arrive, teachers can be trained to stop a classroom killer while the police are on their way.

Governor Bentley’s insulting tone continued, “You know the Legislature sometimes gets excited. And sometimes they try to be relevant.

And sometimes they will come up with some crazy bills. We don’t need to be crazy about this.”

President Obama couldn’t have topped it. In Washington, he’s been trying to marginalize the Constitutional relevance of Congress a lot lately, starting with Boehner (who he successfully rolled on tax increases), moving on to Senate Republicans, twelve of whom he had dinner with recently, (presumably to discuss tax hikes over a glass of merlot) and then to Senate Democrats, who met with him Tuesday.

For the moment, he’s softened his tone and reached out his hand. And an unidentified aide has called it a waste of time.

Rand Paul’s filibuster was welltimed, because Obama was overdue to be taken down a notch or two.

Beyond drone policy, Paul was lodging a general complaint about accountability from the Executive Branch—something that hasn’t been forthcoming until Paul’s 13hour demand that he get an answer to his simple question about the use of drones on innocent American citizens absent an imminent threat.

The question had been in play for about a month with no response; the morning following the filibuster, Senator Paul got his answer.

Here at home, someone needs to bring the governor down a notch or two. His opinion that teachers shouldn’t be armed is debatable, but his characterization of the legislature as childlike, looking for something to live for implies a man who hasn’t the time to be bothered with something as arduous as deliberation.

The facts

are that Franklin County now has the opportunity to train teachers and volunteers how to use a firearm, and then permit them to be

armed. They aren’t obligated to be armed, but there’s a good chance many of them will want to, knowing that it can take the police more than a few minutes to respond to some Franklin County schools. And then, perhaps, other schools around the state will realize that all heck isn’t going to break loose with armed teachers, and they, too, will allow teachers to carry.

Or they might not. That’s the beauty of subsidiarity. It ought to be up to school districts to make up their own minds on the subject, even if they go against Governor Bentley’s ideas about what works.

Memo to the Governor: That’s not crazy. That’s pragmatic.

Relaxing The Rein To Reign

by Deb Kitchenmaster Have you ever had someone tell you to “relax” while placing a firm hand on your shoulder saying, “Relax, will you?” Or a mentor put their hand on your knee as you sit upon the back of a horse and say, “Take a deep breath.”

What’s up with that? I believe that to enjoy and be successful in riding, the rider must be taught to relax and release tension.

In this relaxation the rider puts himself in a position to bring leadership to the horse while teaching the horse how to relax and release tension.

Remember, RELAX. Be balanced. Don’t expect the horse to stay in balance if you are an unbalanced rider. When the horse has the strength to balance himself, the rider has no need to hold tension in the rein. The balance lies within the horse.

Since my last writing, I invited an equine dentist to come out and look at my stallion’s mouth. The TMJ (temporomandibular joint) and the teeth interact OR interfere with jaw movement and when this union is “off,” it can affect the horse’s willingness to relax, flex and come forward through his back and through the bit.

Seek out an equine dentist who understands how to achieve proper release to the TMJ and the tension that comes from hooks and ramps. I just met one I highly recommend. You can use my email address

Do you pull on the reins when you ride? Be conscious of this the next time you ride. Count how many times you pull back on the rein for any reason. This is what mastery looks like. Awareness! Being aware of your weaknesses allows you to focus on improvement.

A pulling hand positions the horse to resist. It is a fixed hand that teaches the horse to look for a way out. Use the fixed rein instead of pulling and your ride will improve.

Relax. Relax the shoulders, relax the elbows close to the body and relax the knee.

Reign on! Rein with the thumb. If your fingers are tight around the rein, the whole arm tightens, creating tension. Use your thumb.

Athens Rehabilitation and Senior Care Center Spotlight on Ruth Truett

by Ali Elizabeth Turner Ruth Truett was born on December 11, 1924, and at 88 years young has a favorite saying: “We go on, and we do the best we can.” She grew up in Cullman County, and her dad was in sales. She married as a young teenager, and had one child from that marriage. He went on to become a Colonel in the United States Army, and his name is Howard Hicks.

She remarried, and after her husband Howard returned

from serving in the Philippines during WWII, they ran a general mercantile and gas station near Heflin, AL for “many years.” That took up most of her time.

She says she “didn’t enjoy cooking, but her husband didn’t complain.” She also added, “I like chicken, if someone else cooks it. You can’t beat fried chicken.”

Miss Ruth is a lifelong Baptist, and attended Union Hill Baptist church in Cleburn County. She

pokes fun at her own denomination and says, with a chuckle, “Baptists are the most stubborn people in the world; we’re set in our ways.”

Her son Harold and his wife Pat had two boys, Keith and Jay Hicks, and she has several great grands. She describes Harold as “a fine son, couldn’t ask for no better, even if I picked him out myself.”

Without a moment’s hesitation she told me her fa-

vorite color is red and her favorite movie is “Gone With The Wind.” She loved Gregory Peck’s performance in “To Kill A Mockingbird.” I told her I wholeheartedly agreed with her, and that it is one of my favorites, too.

Her favorite President?

“Bill Clinton, because he seemed so down to earth.”

Her least favorite President? “Harry Truman, because I never felt like I knew very much about him.”

Her favorite Bible verses?

John 3:16 and Psalms 23.

She was told by her mother, “Date no soldiers.” Apparently that was not advice she chose to follow, but she does have advice for young people: “Make it count, and do your best.”

She continued on, “I try to be patriotic and to support soldiers.” The biggest

change she has seen in her lifetime? “I think that things have smoothed over and got better.”

In regards to her life at Athens Rehab she says, “Couldn’t ask for nothin’ no better.” She went on to tell me that she “likes to play Rook, and they say I am a champion.” She also said of the staff, “They are nice people.” Indeed, while we were chatting, two attendants came in to take Miss Ruth for her walk, and were so polite about coming back after we were finished with the interview.

After they left, she waxed philosophical again and said, “You know, you be good to people, most of the time they’ll be good to you.” I couldn’t agree more, Miss Ruth, and I am glad you are happy in your new digs.

Credit Card Scam: They’re Getting More Sophisticated

I just received an update on the latest credit card fraud; I want to share it with the Athens Now readers.

Here we go-- this is a good one.

Visa/MC, which was issued by (Bank). Did you purchase an Anti-Telemarketing devise for $497.99 from a marketing company in Arizona?” When you reply

to just under $500. A $500 purchase would flag most cards. A credit will be sent to you before your next statement to (they give the correct address), is that correct?” You reply, “YES.”

“NO,” the caller continues with, “Then we will issue a credit to your account. This is a company we have been watching and the charges range anywhere from $300

The caller continues-“I’ll be starting a Fraud Investigation. If you have any questions, you should call the 1-800 number listed on the back of your card and

This fraud is happening in the Midwest area, but working its way across all states.

This is slick, since you provide the information needed and do not realize it. You do not give them your credit card number.

A person calling says, “This is (some name,) and I’m calling from the Security and Fraud Department at VISA/ MC. My badge number is XXXXXX. Your card has been flagged for an unn usual purchase pattern and tI am calling to verify. This rpurchase would be on your

ask for Security. You will to refer to this control number.” The caller will give you a 6 digit number and asks if you need him/ her to read it again.

Here is when the fraud really starts. The caller will ask you to verify that you are in possession of the credit card; they will ask you to turn the card over and read the last three numbers of the card. They will not ask for the seven numbers on the card, just the security code, which is the set of numbers you need to make most Internet purchases. After you give them those numbers, they would say, “That is correct.” They wanted to “verify” you actually have the card, and that it had not been stolen. You will be asked if there are any questions. You will most likely

respond, “No.” The caller will thank you and tell you to call if you have questions.

He/she will hang up. You really said very little, and you never gave out your CARD NUMBER. We called Visa about 20 minutes later, and were told by the real Visa security department it was a SCAM, and a purchase of $497.99 was charged to the card. You need to make a real fraud report and close the card. Visa will issue a new card and number. Don’t ever give out any card numbers to anyone asking for it from your credit card company. They already have them if they are legit.

Please, if any one calls saying they are from your credit card company, do not answer any questions. Call back to your credit card company using the phone number listed on your card, and ask for security.
