Most folks know that 50 years ago I was a radical feminist who had publically announced that I would “never be any man’s baby machine.” This was particularly idiotic, as well as disingenuous, because all my life I had wanted to be a mom of 4 kids, and my dream was to have two boys and two girls. In 1968, if Gillette had produced their new “boys will be boys” ad that is creating such a stir, I would have loudly hollered, “Right on!” And, as a side note, I did get my heart’s desire and more when it came to being a mom— kids, step kids, “kids-ofthe-heart,” all because of mercy and grace.

In 1970, I had the spiritual equivalent of a head-on collision with the Son of God, and let’s just say He didn’t blink. I have been in His ICU ever since, and most days His nurses, docs, and therapists say I am making great progress! I am deeply grateful for their intensive care of yours truly, as well as the results, but sometimes I am a bit dense. I get upset when I feel like I have been duped, which was exactly the case after Lynne Hart greeted me when I walked into the Keep Athens-Limestone Beautiful office with, “Have you seen the Gillette ad that is so controversial?”

“No,” I replied while I put my stuff down, and she hit Play. We watched it, and for the first few seconds, I thought, “What’s the big deal? Speaking out against various forms of socially

negative behavior is a good thing.”

Then came the scene portraying the backyard BBQ-ers, complete with the politically correct and mandatory levels of diversity, chanting, “Boys will be boys will be boys.”

I looked at her with an incredulous “Wuuttttt?” on

my face.

Then two things happened: I began to read some of the comments from understandably offended men, and I discovered that in 2017, Proctor & Gamble had produced a psychologically similar ad directed toward law enforcement, with the endgame of increasing sales in the black community. This resulted in a true “I-could-have-had-aV-8” moment, when the only appropriate thing to do would be to slap myself on the forehead. Man, did I feel like a doofus! The first time I saw the ad, I missed from the get-go the admakers’ slicker-than-snot, completely outrageous and unacceptable attack on half of the planet’s population! I am incensed at the accusation which posits that masculine men are automatically toxic due to the actual level of testosterone that is

part of their makeup. Or, as I once heard someone say, “Men are evil, throw rocks at them.”

In fancy terms, this is known as “misandry,” which is the opposite of misogyny, or “women-hating.” It is defined by Oxford as, “dislike of, contempt for, or

ingrained prejudice against men (i.e. the male sex).”

Its etymology is from the Greek language using the same linguistic construction as “misogyny,” and interestingly didn’t come into use until the late 19th century. Here you have the root, “andro” rather than “gyno,” and “miso” simply means “hate” in both cases.

Time for the necessary disclaimer: I am not a fan of bullying, sexual harassment, or anything else unbiblical or criminal. Most reasonable men and women aren’t. But, can you imagine the reaction if Venus razors for women (which, hysterically is also owned

by Gillette, er, Proctor & Gamble) produced an ad that showed women at large as the current equivalent of the movie, Mean Girls; or women who voluntarily pay to have their innocent preborn girl children aborted

because they would rather not be pregnant and miss their ski trip; or moms who commit murder so their daughters can be on the cheer squad; or women who facilitate the trafficking of other women under the guise of getting them modeling jobs; or female

cyber bullies who inspire their female classmates to commit suicide? If such an ad portraying women at their very worst tried to guilt me into thinking that I and my gender needed to “be better” so they sell more razors, I would feel a spiritual obligation to pitch a sanctified hissy fit.

P&G, do not stereotype, distort, pervert, vilify, or erase men’s “man-ness” in order to boost your sales, and don’t do anything comparable to women or black people. It’s insulting, and you might just end up nicking yourself.

“The Time Is Always Right To Do Right”

by Ali Elizabeth Turner This is the season when our country celebrates the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, and one of his most famous quotes is, “The time is always right to do right.” He made this statement, or its near equivalent, twice; once was in his famous 1963 “Letter From A Birmingham Jail,” and the other was in 1965 at the school I attended, Oberlin College, where King spoke three times.

The incident I am about to describe was exactly what Dr. King was trying to teach -- that doing right is always right. And in this case, it served to make a disabled vet weep for joy, garner a reward for two girls, generate media

Finally, Marc and the girls met, and the hugs were heartfelt. He was so touched by the girls’ honesty and integrity that he decided to give them $200, something that at this point is a coverage, and warm hearts. It happened in Detroit, and a Marine by the name of Marc Walsh had been to the grocery story. Unbeknownst to Marc, his wallet fell out of his pocket, and it could have been a disaster—besides carrying cash, credit cards, and his military ID, Marc is

currently between jobs, so every dollar counts.

He thought it was just lost, and did not know what he was going to do.

The next day, two kids found Marc’s wallet and went straight to his house, showed up on security footage, and returned the wallet.

Marc’s roommate called him to let him know it had been returned, and Marc had to pull over to the side of the road because he was crying for joy so hard that he couldn’t drive. The girls went on their way, and the roommate forgot to get their names.

Marc reached out to the FOX station in Detroit,

told his story, and asked that they put it out there so he could find the kids and thank them. "When I went back to look at the video, I was just completely shocked to see two kids that age being the ones to return it," he said. "Honestly, it's just really truly heartwarming. Unfortunately, they didn't get a reward; so that's why I wanted to find them," he said.

The search was fruitful, and two 14-year-old twin girls, Makhia and Makyla Vincent told the news outlet that Marc’s wallet and the military ID inside reminded them of their grandfather, who is also a veteran. “I read the veteran’s card and I

“I feel really happy and grateful that I could help somebody because I know other people could have kept the money,” Makyla said. For his part, Marc said, “I’m so incredibly grateful, so grateful and humbled,” he told them. “It renews my faith in humanity, it really does.” Doing right is always right, and I hope your heart, whether you are a vet or a civilian, is cheered and warmed a touch in the middle of a chilly January.

Youth Commission Learns About Electric Dept

by Holly Hollman City of Athens Communications Specialist Members of the Athens Mayor's Youth Commission visited Athens Utilities today to learn about the Electric Department.

The students held 55 pounds of gear that linemen wear, learned how a pinprick size hole in safety gloves could lead to injury or death when working on power lines, and discovered that snakes, hawks carrying dead rabbits and squirrels cause power outages as well as lightning strikes, falling trees, and vehicle accidents.

For several years there has been an essay contest, which spans several grade levels, and this year there were upwards of 40 entries. The winners of both contests will be announced on January 21 at the MLK celebration in the County Event Center.

“Some kids write well, and some kids do better at expressing themselves through art; so this year we added the art contest,” said the mayor. All were touching, and some were unintentionally humorous.

I Quit!

by D. A. Slinkard D.A. Slinkard is the manager of the Athens Staples store I have decided that changes are coming to the year 2019, and I have gotten a lot of positive feedback. I appreciate everyone who takes the time out of their day to let me know the kind words and the impact the articles found in this newspaper are having all across north Alabama!

May all the Glory go to God! I have been thinking about two words for the past couple of weeks and I have finally decided to put the words down on paper. Think about it -- if you have something you want to accomplish, it is merely a dream until you write it down, and then it becomes a goal. The past few weeks I have been taking everything in, and I have decided to quit!

It really was a hard deci-

sion to make; after all, one thing my dad taught me was that the first time you quit, it is a hard decision to make. However, the more you make it a habit, the easier the decision becomes with each passing day. Eventually you get to the point you do not even think about what you are doing, and quitting in your life becomes second nature. My dad was right about quitting; the decision was tough, and I contemplated not even writing this down.

Even though I halfway thought it would be best not to openly admit “I quit,” that one sentence sends shock waves through my body simply because I have never been a quitter in my life. That is...until now. I wonder

what people will think of me? Will you see me as the person who writes the motivating columns, or are you going to see me as a quitter? No holding back -- let's just get right down to it.

I quit...making excuses as to why I do not achieve the success levels that I want in 2019. For too long I have accepted mediocre results; I have allowed for the excuses to creep into my life. This will happen no more as I am going to make the conscious decision to own 2019 with my results.

I quit...not expecting the best from myself. For too long I have not held myself to the standard I need to be held accountable to.

Truth be told, I am tougher

on myself than what others are; but in 2019, I am going to step up my expectation levels in my life.

I quit...not making the right amount of effort to achieve my goals. I find that too often we do not make the necessary amount of effort to reach the levels of success that we have set as our goals.

Too often we are just busy enough to say we are busy, and we end up wasting too much effort on non-essential things. Not going to happen to me in 2019.

I quit...not taking a highenergy level approach every day in 2019. How many times has someone asked you how you were doing and you sheepishly reply, “Good.” It is time to quit with the low-en-

ergy levels. We live in a society that has the lowest energy levels known to man. Think about all of the energy drinks out there or the energy pills… all of these things out there that are supposed to give us a boost in energy but causes many people to come crashing down.

I quit...having the wrong amount of focus. I believe we have a focus problem in our society being that we cannot focus on a goal or idea for longer than five minutes without losing interest. I think about the successful people in the past who have come before me, and they were a success because of the focus they had. We have a generation of people that want what their parents have; the only difference is it took the parents thirty years to obtain what the kids want tomorrow.

Here you have just some of my thoughts on the importance of quitting in 2019. I never would have thought I would be a quitter, but I decided that enough was enough.

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over again and expecting a different result; well, I am trying a new approach for 2019 because the sky’s the limit for anyone reading this. Quit making excuses. Quit having low expectations of yourself.

Quit making the wrong amount of effort. Quit having low energy. Quit having the wrong focus.

From the Alabama Veterans’ Museum

Meet CWO-4 (Chief Warrant Officer 4) Bob Borden

by Sandra Thompson, Director, Alabama Veterans’ Museum Bob was born in a log cabin in 1946 and grew up in Charlestown, in the oldest part of Boston, Massachusetts. He comes from a very patriotic family; he has five brothers and they were all in the military.

Bob joined the Army in 1964. He wanted to be in electronics repair, but the Army had other plans for him and made him a Land Combat Missile Maintenance Technician.

He held many different positions while serving -- he went from maintenance technician, to supervisor, to instructor, to managing maintenance on The TOW (Tube-launched, Op-

tically-tracked, Wireguided) anti-tank missile. Bob also worked on the Improved TOW, Improved TOW Acquisition Systems, Dragon, Lance, Shillelagh, Bradley Fighting Vehicle Systems, and the Multiple Launch Rocket Systems.

Bob participated in Operation Desert Storm with the 1st Armored Division; Supported the 1st Armored Division as the Mayor of the Life Support Area in Taszár, Hungary during Operation Enduring Freedom; and closed out his military career as the Deputy Chief, Administration and Operations, Land Combat Missile

Maintenance Training Division, United States Ordnance Missile and Munitions Center and School, Redstone Arsenal, Alabama. One of Bob’s most satisfying times was in Direct Support of the Infantry Units and deploying with them. He was “proudest that my soldiers were able to have every 2nd Brigade, 1st Armored Division missile system 100% operational when crossing the border into Iraq during Desert Storm.”

Bob is just not an asset to the museum, but an essential leader in the Athens community. Bob has truly made a difference in our community

in so many ways. As a volunteer for Care Assurance System for the Aging and Homebound (CASA), Bob helped the elderly and disabled preserve their independence and continue living in their own home by building over 35 wheelchair ramps. As the adjutant and treasurer for the Disabled American Veterans (DAV), he helps his fellow veteran’s access benefits they are entitled to. He also serves as the treasurer for the American Legion; he is involved in fundraising efforts there including their monthly chicken stew and annual pancake breakfast.

Bob also serves on the American Legion com-

mittee that awards scholarships for Boys and Girls State, where they learn how to participate in the functioning of their state’s government and prepare for their future roles as responsible adult citizens.

Each year Bob heads up the Memorial Day flag program, ensuring that our fallen veterans have a flag on their grave for Memorial Day; and with over 300 cemeteries in Limestone County, this is no small feat. In conjunction with the local Boy Scouts, Bob has recorded information on these veterans in a computer program and donated a computer and workstation to the Veterans Museum so that individuals may have access to information on our local heroes who served in the military. Bob is also instrumental in our annual Memorial Day program, honoring the fallen veterans from the previous year. He oversaw the construction of a fire pit at the Veterans Museum, to ensure our worn and tattered flags are retired properly. He is involved with our local Cub Scout and Boy Scout troops; each year he plans their annual dinner event honoring veterans.

Bob has been married to his lovely wife Patty for 35 years, and they have 3 children and 5 grandchildren.

Basketball Teams Still Hoopin’ It Up

It may be a new year to most of us, but to our local basketball teams, going into 2019 is just a continuation of what they started back in November. Christmas tournaments kept players from getting stale over the holidays and gave those teams with younger rosters just that much more experience. Bowling teams also have been having outstanding seasons. The James Clemens boys’ bowling team finished the regular season with a 15-4 record, East Limestone’s boys were 11-1, while the Lady Indians posted a 9-3 tally.

Basketball highlights by team since last month’s column: Ardmore The Tigers held off West Limestone, Priceville, and Elkmont. Ardmore’s girls defeated Clements, Elkmont, and West Morgan.

Athens Bible The Trojans defeated Gaylesville, Oakwood Academy, and Shoals Christian.

Athens The Lady Golden Eagles came out on the winning end against James Clemens, Lauderdale County, Bob Jones, Cullman, and Columbia, while the Athens boys got by St. John Paul II. Clements Clements' boys topped Shoals Christian; the Lady Colts claimed wins

over West Morgan, Shoals Christian, and Westminster.

Elkmont The Lady Red Devils got by Fayetteville and Tanner. Elkmont varsity teams swept Lindsay Lane.

James Clemens James Clemens' boys topped Athens, Madison Academy, Guntersville, and Decatur Heritage. The Lady Jets posted wins over Spain Park and Florence.

Lindsay Lane Both varsity teams came out with victories against Sheffield and Whitesburg Christian.

The Lions beat Ardmore and Falkville.

Tanner Rattler teams got a sweep over Sheffield and Tharptown. The boys also defeated St. John Paul II, Elkmont, Lindsay Lane and Hatton.

West Limestone The Lady Wildcats were winners over Ardmore and Brooks 36. Boys’ and girls’ squads both held off Tanner.

Part 1 of a Series In this country, 83% of people dispose of their trash properly, leaving 17% who dispose of trash in a way that creates litter. Litter cleanup costs the citizens of the United States over $11 BILLION annually!

Those include local dollars. Think of what could be done with that money if it wasn’t being spent on picking up trash!

The presence of litter in a community takes a toll on quality of life, property values, and housing prices. Let’s face it, it is UGLY! Litter also has environmental consequences, with the potential for serious land and water contamination and injury to people and wildlife.

How can we reduce the littering statistics?

Changing attitudes and behaviors is the key.

Headed To The Big D… And I Don’t Mean Dallas

by Anna Hamilton Last issue, I started a series on healthier eating -- recreating comfort food dishes to be much healthier but still delicious.

This is a journey that I am on this year. I had a barrage of doctor’s appointments over this last week. The results of these appointments has forced me to make a choice: learn a new way to nourish my body or head straight towards the big D… Diabetes.

Hearing that I am now considered a diabetic was a true wake up call. I am not yet on insulin but I am headed down that road quickly. I knew that I had to make an effort to change my life.

I owed it to my family, and I owed it to myself.

Most of us forget to take care of ourselves. We run after our children, we make sure our spouse has what they need, we care

for our neighbors, we make sure the dog is walked…but we don’t make sure we have been taken care of. It is impossible to take care of others if you are sick!

This week’s recipe is recipe number 2 in our journey towards better health. It is a classic spaghetti dish, but with zucchini noodles or “zoodles.” You can still have your favorite plate of spaghetti and not feel like you need to take a nap after you eat.

I hope you are enjoying this journey with me, and I would love to hear what your journey to health looks like for you.

Recipe #2 - Zoodles with Meat Sauce What You Need:

3-4 medium zucchini, or pre-made zucchini noodles 1 24 oz. jar of low sugar marinara sauce 1 lb. of 93% lean ground beef, or ground turkey or chicken 1 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil ½ tsp Italian seasoning ½ tsp oregano ¼ tsp red pepper flakes Salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

In a large skillet, add extra virgin olive oil and bring to medium heat. Add ground meat and brown.

Meanwhile, using a spiralizer, make your zoodles. If you do not have a spiralizer, you can simply cut very thin strips of zucchini using a vegetable peeler, or some grocery stores carry pre-made zoodles in the produce section.

Once you have made your zoodles, spread them out on a paper towel and sprinkle with some salt. Let stand for 2030 minutes to let the moisture escape.

While waiting for your zoodles, add your marinara sauce to your browned meat and let simmer. Add your spices to meat mixture.

Once the zoodles have sat, wring out any excess moisture with a paper towel. Sauté the zucchini in a pan until they are hot and soft to eat. When the zoodles are ready, pile them on a plate and top with meat sauce. Feel free to add your favorite parmesan cheese!

Most times an individual is underprepared to face the challenge that is laid before them. A person can either rise to master it, or they will fall victim to their own frailty, regardless of the situation.

For example, an offense is not simply an obstacle; it is a refining tool. The final outcome is a polished gem. We are all diamonds in the rough and irons in the fire. However, without a little fire and grit, you will never be able to showcase your value and utility. It is time to discover what you are made of.

American culture has diminished the significance of offensiveness. Having one’s ideas tested and tried are privileges that are too often taken for granted. Should a per-

son’s core beliefs never advance or solidify past the stage of discovery, they will not remain, but will be easily supplanted by a counterfeit ethic.

Currently, pre-modern philosophy is represented as being imperialistic, modern literature is racist, and arithmetic is a “sexist tool of the oppressive patriarchy.” If knowledge is power, this is the fastest way to rid any capable person of self-determination and independent success. Ignorant bliss will become a costly liability that will leave you unconsciously miserable.

It would be like someone assisting you in the construction of your own prison, and them telling you how comfortable you will be. That is a self-defeating existence.

You deserve to be challenged. Every experience, no matter how miniscule, is preparation for the next state of disarray or turmoil. Your appropriate response, which hopefully results in the mastery of order, purpose, and destiny, will expose what you may need to change in order to succeed. Whether you are simply following a baking recipe, mastering the dance steps of a classic ballet routine, replacing a piston in a combustion engine, or performing a spinal surgery, there is a “method through the madness.” No one wakes up knowing precisely how to execute these tasks perfectly the first time. Trial and error are necessary components of learning, and proficiency must be obtained, to not only ben-

efit yourself, but to be erudite enough to teach another. The knowledge that is worthy of perpetuating is part of a legacy that most do not consider perfecting.

You are never fully ready for what may test your competency, and you must experience the “trial by fire.” Yes, one is actually obligated to prove one’s competency! Make your case as best as you can, and be ready to change when you are wrong.

Simply being wrong or holding inaccurate information does not make the individual immoral.

Acting on inaccurate information in the hopes of witnessing a critic’s demise is what is immoral.

That is not competency; that is malevolence.

In the Judeo-Christian worldview, “A righteous man leaves an inheritance for his children.”

What exactly are you choosing to pass on to the generation after you?

Platitudes of peace and masquerades of mercy do not a future make.

Profits, dividends, and proceeds are indicators of progress. There absolutely must be surpluses created in order to invest into the future. You cannot invest where you do not have extra to do so.

Those who perceive your responsibility to accrue life savings as selfishness are guilty of cruel covetousness. Their ethics are bankrupt before then even start.

Life tests you because neither you nor your neighbor are fully competent in what can make them ultimately moral or profitable. Society must be flexible enough to let you fail in order for you to learn. If every misunderstanding and misinterpretation damns you, there is zero expectation of transcending your present circumstance. In addition, when an offhand comment made 15 years ago is automatically deemed as proof of your present worldview, grace is automatically precluded. The individual should not be marginalized, but after considerable evaluation, an idea that they present may deserve to be. In any case, people and their ideas must be tried by fire, if either are going to have any lasting worth.

Good Sugar vs. Bad Sugar – How To Make The Right Choice

One of the best ways we can begin that new healthyeating routine we promised we would is to avoid fad diets and really know the facts about what we put in our bodies.

Look at the carbs as sugars on the nutrition label. This will include both natural and added sugars. Less than 5g per 100g is low, more than 22.5g per 100g is high.

So let’s distinguish between good sugars and bad sugars. Good sugars are naturally occurring in our foods, bad sugars are added to our foods. Our taste buds cannot tell the difference between naturally occurring sugars, which are found in foods such as fruit and dairy products, and added sugars, which manufacturers add to foods such as soda and candy. From a nutritional standpoint, however, there is a big difference between these sugar sources. Foods that contain naturally occurring sugar tend to be nutrient-rich, providing more nutrition per bite. Foods that have added sugars have little to no nutritional value being simply empty cal-

The higher up on the ingredients list these are, the more sugar the product contains.

A basic rule is to stick to the exterior of the grocery store isles, choosing mostly fresh foods.

The less processed, the less bad sugar. However, when buying from those interior isles it’s best to avoid products labeled “sugar free” as they tend to contain artificial sweeteners like sucralose, saccharin and aspartame.

Keep carbs in check; things like white bread, rice, and pasta will contain more of those processed, bad sugars.

Replace these with wholegrain options and balance this all out with lean proteins such as fish, chicken, and turkey which will help keep us full longer preventing extreme cravings.

Cutting sugar out of your daily routine will not be without struggle.

The body has to adjust like it does to breaking any other addiction.

Drink tons of water during this time. A dull headache may be experienced and cravings will most definitely be an issue! Go cold turkey and fight through it or have a few ounces of pure fruit juice to help.

The symptoms will only last a few days, and soon you will be functioning with more mental clarity and be on your way to shedding those few extra pounds you wanted gone for 2019.

Tammy’s Fine Jewelry: Where You Can Shop In The Name Of Love

tice, she said goodbye, and the next day Tammy, her husband Kip, sons, and a daughters-inlaw headed out for what she just thought was going to be a lovely cruise and special family time. It was indeed that, but she found that when she would relax out on the deck, she could not stop seeing herself having her own place. The dreams she had as a girl basically came roaring back and wouldn’t leave her alone. “All day long I took notes,” she told me. “Things like the theme of the shop, a business plan, suppliers, the layout; it all just kept coming.”

When Tammy returned home, knowing that the former Carole Fôret Gallery on the Square was available, she spent a month going up to the shop, looking in the window, and dreaming. She consulted carefully with her extended family, and they basically told her to go for it. It was then time to make a decision and either take the risk or just do what was comfortable, predictable, and safe. So, she contacted realtor Tony McCormack, who showed her the building, and when she walked in the door, she said to herself, “This is it.”

She fell head over heels in love with the historical building— the high ceilings, the exposed brick, and the lovingly worn hardwood floors. “It was perfect,” Tammy said.

One of the things that drove Tammy to “yield to her entrepreneurial spirit” was that she wanted to leave a legacy to her kids and grandkids, which is tough to do unless one actually becomes a business owner.

So, she took the plunge, and Tammy’s Fine Jewelry, located

“It all came together basically in one weekend—the property, the display cases, the suppliers, and the staff,” said Tammy. I personally had the blessing of sticking my head in the shop to say hello that first week in December, and could honestly say, “I love what you’ve done with the place.” More importantly, I appreciated the way I saw people being treated. Tammy told me, “One of the things that has always been important to me is that no matter who you are, or how much you have to spend, you are treated like royalty.” She continued and said, “Whether you are purchasing a ten dollar watch band, or a ten thousand dollar piece of jewelry, we want you to get the same treatment.” Tammy often thinks of the proverbial teenage boy wanting to purchase a piece of jewelry for his first sweetheart, and how much she would want her own kids to be treated with care if they were in the same situation. Speaking of staff, between Tammy, Jane Vaughn, Gigi Alcover, and Susan Cornelison, collectively they have around 50 years of experience in the fine jewelry business. They all have a handle on what is known in the diamond world as “the 5Cs”—color, clarity, carat size, cut, and certification, and if a sixth one could be added, it would be providing “confidence” to the buyer. That comes from being willing to educate, and it is something people greatly appreciate. They are all also close friends, and genuinely enjoy each other as well as their new endeavor. “We want to have a small-town feel to the

shop, and we want to serve a broad spectrum of customers,” I was told.

We moved to a discussion of the types of jewelry offered at Tammy’s, price points, specific lines, custom services, as well as repairs. The bridal line is called Imagine Bridal, and Tammy told me she selected them for a number of reasons. “They are versatile, and they are established. They do yellow gold, white gold, and platinum. They feature engagement rings, wedding sets, and bands,” she said. Imagine Bridal will also do functionally custom work; for example, if you like a particular setting, but want to have a completely

from classic to contemporary, and people walking into the shop think they are white gold.

“They are coated with rhodium, which holds color and prevents tarnish,” said Tammy.

The North Alabama Ambassadors are located all across Alabama and the southeastern United States and come from all walks of life, including a pilot, occupational therapist, 911 operator and a geospatial

analyst.

The gym is full, and all the treadmills are taken! Yes its time to scale back and get ready for your new summer debut. As January starts to end, the treadmills will start to free up and those New Year weight resolutions will get a little blurry.

We know this is what happens every year, but it does not happen to be the end of your weight loss journey.

Recently I spoke with a nutritionist and discussed simple things we can do to make a lasting impact on our weight loss journey.

The conversation was nothing new. We hear it often, and know in our minds what we need to do, but it takes a firm commitment to put it into action.

During our week, we eat breakfast, lunch, dinner -- and don’t forget the snacks. The problem comes when we must determine what we will fix or go out and buy. We spend more time thinking

about what we will eat than the time we spend preparing it. The more the nutritionist talked about healthy choices, the more I realized the best way to make this happen was to buy right so I would eat right and then feel right.

The hardest meal for me is the one I needed the most -- breakfast.

I have so much to do before leaving the house each morning that breakfast is always an afterthought.

Learning some simple ways to take 30 minutes on Sunday afternoon to prepare it has made my weekly breakfast a welcomed, scrumptious, healthy treat as I leave for work each day. Finally, I get it! Food prep is the way to go. I started with a bowl, muffin pan, veggies, eggs, cheese, and meat; and once mixed, I put it in the oven, and within minutes, I have breakfast muffins for the week. I just pop one or two in the microwave and enjoy it on my way

In the form of a structure, what is a stable? A stable is a building in which livestock, especially horses, are kept. It most commonly means a building that is divided into separate stalls for individual animals. According to the size of the horse, research recommends a minimum stable size of 12ft x 12ft for horses, and preferably 12ft x 14ft for larger breeds. For ponies, the recommended minimum dimensions should be 10ft x 10ft and 10ft x 12ft for larger ponies. Not all horses will need stabling/ housing. Some breeds with thick coats are capable of living outdoors throughout the year, provided they can obtain shelter from the prevailing winds, summer sun, and flies. As donkeys do not have waterproof coats, they will always need shelter from the rain.

The minimum height of the stall walls should be eight to nine feet. Minimum ceiling height should be nine feet, but most recommendations, if there is a ceiling, is to go higher, 10 to 12 feet for ventilation purposes. Most recommendations are not to have a ceiling.

When I was in elementary school, my favorite time of the day was creative writing. We would be given a topic, or a sentence, to get us started, and then we were to just write. Because I tend to be more introverted, (although I do believe we are all ambiverts depending on the situation… topic for an-

other time!) words and writing quickly became my favorite venue. I could take the time to think about exactly what I wanted to say and how to say it. And if it didn’t sound right, I could erase and start over. I didn’t have to be quick on my feet as in the verbal world. Nothing gave or gives me greater pleasure than to discover the perfect word to describe a feeling or an object or an event. I am a believer in the power of words to harm or soothe, to encourage or degrade, to transport or to stifle.

So, it only makes sense that there would be a therapy technique that uses stories. Narrative therapy is a method of mental health counseling that separates the person from the problem through the stories we tell ourselves.

Narrative therapy is a positive and encouraging way for people to rely on their own skills to minimize problems in their lives. For all of us, our personal experiences become our personal stories. And for better or worse, these stories develop meaning for us and help

shape our identity. NT uses the power of these stories, our life stories, to help us discover our life purpose and direction. I believe, and NT believes, that each of us is the “narrator” of our own story. The basics of NT are rooted in the role of the therapist to empower and collaborate with the client. By separating the person from the problem, people can focus on using their skills and expertise in guiding change in their lives. My goal, as the therapist, is to externalize the issue/ problem. I love the idea that telling your story is a form of action toward change. How does this work?

As a narrative therapist, I have three goals: to help objectify the problem, frame the problem in a larger social and cultural context, and then teach my client how to make room for other stories. The idea is for us to identify and build on an alternative or more preferred storyline for life. Your best life. Take a moment and think about something that is causing distress in your life.

you have been telling yourself? Your storyline is separate from the problem, which allows you to rewrite your story! You are writing your story every day. And if you are in the present moment, you are writing in pencil, with a big eraser on the end of it!

What is the impact of your problem? NT helps the client to identify what is valuable in a broader context…beyond just the problem itself. It probably goes without saying (but I’ll put it in writing here) that there is always a connection between your actions and your choices. If we can connect our pattern of choices to life experiences, we gain insight into how to address problems going forward.

What I truly love about NT is that my goal is not to transform my client. (No one can do that but you!) My goal is to transform the effects of the problem…to make space between you and your challenges. And this can help you develop greater self-compassion. “I’m not the problem.

The problem is the problem.”

On your own, I encourage you to journal. Whatever that means for you. Some people enjoy blogging. I started a private blog several years ago, documenting the interconnectedness of my life with my grandchildren. Some people prefer pencil and paper and the actual process of writing.

And now you can even write your story on your phone! If you have trouble getting started, there are journals that have daily prompts. And if you aren’t a “writer,” then please just take a few minutes each day to jot down three things you are grateful for, or one thing you learned, or one act of kindness you showed. Your book is being written, with or without you. This new year is waiting for you to share your story.

Flames of Inflammation

by Roy Williams Almost every disease known to man is associated with inflammation.

As a matter of fact, your immune response causes inflammation, which means that in some cases, inflammation can be helpful. However, when you have too much, it can do a lot of harm to your body and speed up the aging process.

Chronic inflammatory conditions, such as fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, diabetes, arthritis, sinus infections, allergies, cancer, heart disease, gout, and especially the auto immune disorders, such as lupus, Crohn’s, rheumatoid arthritis and the rest all cause inflammation in the human body.

When your body is full of inflammation, you are most likely in pain; however, in some cases such as high blood pressure, which can be caused by inflammation, you may not have any physical signs at all. For that reason, we suggest when you have your blood work done,

request that they do a CRP profile which will indicate how much inflammation you have in your body. CRP stands for C-reactive protein, which increases as inflammation goes up.

The normal range for Creactive protein, or CRP, is less than 1.0 milligram

per deciliter or less than 10 milligrams per liter, reports WebMD. The CRP blood test measures the amount of C-reactive protein in the blood.

When your levels are higher, you may choose to begin taking some allnatural, anti-inflammatory supplements with turmeric or curcumin,

boswellia, ginger, green tea, white willow bark, and or bromelain.

Some really nice super foods such as noni, resveratrol, aloe and mangosteen have also proven to support normal CRP levels in the body.
