Think, Learn, SucceedA True Declaration Of Independence This Independence Day week, I have been thinking a great deal about the belief system of our Framers.

I have wondered, how was it possible for them to craft and draft a document which resulted in a way of living that has created more freedom, prosperity, and progress than any other nation in history? There are many answers, and they range from values to education to prayer. But one thing I know is true, and that is we are free today because they knew how to think, and the application of their thinking resulted in far-reaching success. The rest of, of course, had to do with the courage of soldiers, the sacrifices of the citizenry, and the calling and destiny of our American people, no matter the country where they started out. On Flag Day, I had the privilege of speaking at Athens State University, and one of the things I said with passion is that we have exchanged teaching our kids how to think for telling them what to think. Clearly we have paid a high price for doing so; however, all is not lost.

What can we expect from this latest in a long line of game-changing books? A careful treatment of mindset, genetics, a profile of gifts and strengths, how to learn effectively, change your circumstances, increase creativity, improve

memory and its functionality, increase emotional control by learning how to make stress work for you and not against you, and how to experience intellectual satisfaction. By the way, Dr. Leaf is a woman of faith herself, and is just as adept at speaking before secular audiences as she is to churches, and I heard her live at the Rock Family Worship Center’s Women’s Conference last summer. Here’s a peek at some of her work: “A mindset is an attitude, or a cluster of thoughts with attached information and emotions that generate a particular perception. They can catapult you forward, allowing you to achieve dreams, or put you in reverse drive if you are not careful.”

Given everything from the current political climate, what passes for entertainment, and a wholly uncivil societal war of words, isn’t it time to declare our individual independence and take back our ability to think, learn, and succeed? Join me on August 7! Perhaps we shall start a glorious revolution.

The Army Materiel Command Band Has Played Its Last Note

by Ali Elizabeth Turner This past Memorial Day, our town had a grand celebration of a most solemn day of remembrance, and it warmed my heart to both know and hear that the Army Materiel Command Band out of Redstone was on duty to provide live, stirring music as only they can.

I smiled as I thought back to the important role they “played” in Iraq in raising the morale of our troops and providing the therapy that is the singular purview of musical sound.

You see, it was in the former hunting lodge of Saddam Hussein, during the hotterthan-the-hinges-of-Hades summers, that we gladly moved around the furniture so that these guys and gals could unpack their instruments, with their weapons slung over their backs.

Man, oh man, could they ever play! They showed up in the DFacs (Dining Facilities); Saddam’s Birthday Palace; set up indoors and outdoors; played morning, noon and night; and their excellence of spirit and musical production were more than memorable.

It was at the above-men-

tioned Athens-Limestone County Memorial Day event that Deb Kohlhase told me that the band was going to be deactivated, which made us both sad. She then sent me the following info with the thoughtful intent that stated, “I’m sure we can't stop their deactivation, but perhaps we can at least give them a warm sendoff. It makes me sad -- they did an impressive job every time & place I have heard them over the years.”

The Public Affairs Office at Redstone took time to both honor them as well as talk about their history: “The AMC Band has proudly served the command since 2006, supporting Soldiers and civilians worldwide, performing across the United States and in Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Afghanistan and the United Arab Emirates.

The AMC Band has direct ties to the U.S. Army Signal Corps Band and the 13th Cavalry Regimental Band, though it does not carry their lineage and honors.

The 13th Cavalry Band was organized at Fort Meade, South Dakota on 24 May, 1901. It served at various posts and camps worldwide before arriving at Fort Monmouth in August of 1930.

In 1916, while on international border patrol, the 13th Cavalry band saw action against Francisco “Poncho” Villa’s guerrillas in Columbus, New Mexico.

Although the band received nine casualties, Poncho Villa’s casualties numbered one-hundred ninety-two.

In late August 1930,

shortly after its move to Ft. Monmouth, the 13th Cavalry Regimental Band was formally inactivated and retired. In the same month the U.S Army Signal Corps Band was activated and received personnel and equipment from the 13th Cavalry Band.

In January 1944, the Signal Corps Band was inactivated and the 389th Army Band was formed and activated. It likewise inherited personnel and equipment from the Signal Corps Band.

During World War II, the 389th Army Band was the motivating factor in a campaign that sold more than one million dollars in war bonds for the war effort, earning the band the Meritorious Unit Commendation, 1944-1945.

In its fiftieth year of existence, the AMC Band was transferred to Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland (APG). In August of 2005, the band earned the Army Superior Award for exceptional service in support of the Global War on Terrorism.

The U.S. Army Materiel Command Band was constituted on 15 January 1944 as the 389th Army Band, and was activated the following week at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey.

On 16 August 2006, Chief, Force Structure, and Unit History Branch conferred upon the 389th Army Band the distinctive designation of “U.S. Army Materiel Command Band.” This designation directly associates the band with AMC Headquarters and all of the 65,000 Army Materiel Command military and civilian personnel stationed worldwide.

mand Headquarters, ten AMC Major Subordinate Commands, AMC installations worldwide, Aberdeen Proving Ground Garrison and 20 tenant organizations on APG, including the U.S. Army Ordnance Center and School.

The wide geographical footprint of the AMC Enterprise directly shapes the expeditionary qualities the band must employ. With its five Music Support Teams and combined capabilities, the unit performs over 200 times each year throughout the country and overseas in support of AMC assets, as well as for local military and civilian community functions. Over the past five years the AMC Band has deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom, bringing music to those forward deployed in Iraq, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, and Afghanistan.”

Two days ago, the residents of Providence in Huntsville were the last ones to hear this particular band as they played at the Village’s 4th of July celebration. So if they have to disband, I am glad that it happened in North Alabama where this particular band unit started, and that it was on the day we celebrate our independence.

There are other bands attached to other bases, but this feels like a hole that no one else could fill. Guys and gals, thank you from the bottom of my heart for your courage, the long hours of practice, and everything you went through to lift our spirits as well as those of our brave service members.

We shall miss you.

Because Of You I Did Not Give Up

D.A. Slinkard is the manager of the Athens Staples store We have just celebrated the United States of America’s birthday!

What a joyous time for many people to reflect upon the freedoms we have here. How did we go about getting these freedoms? It came down to a decision being made, and never backing down from that decision. Thinking about our Independence Day and the bravery that has been evident throughout our country’s history, I am reminded that each act of heroism was completed all because someone made a decision bases on what they believed in.

Throughout all of history, this same sentiment is found in anyone who has ever done anything worthwhile. The person simply made a decision to change their life and then kept moving forward. How many times do we have people make a decision but then hesitate to act upon what they know is right? This happens more than we realize because it is human nature to avoid fear.

If I take the road less traveled, then it might be hard. Life might not be easy. Things might get tough. These are the thought processes of those who have a defeated mindset.

feel good. I am going to tell you that life does not always feel good because it will not always be easy; things might get tough, but we need to be of the mindset to stick it out.

Look at marriages across our country, and you see a staggering statistic that shows more than 50% of all marriages end in divorce. Why? People want to dab a little here, dab a little there, and don’t you know that life needs to feel good?

We have been lulled asleep by this ideology that we can have anything we want in life, and we can achieve it by taking the least amount of action possible. Wrong way of thinking. Can you imagine what the great United States of America would be like if our forefathers

had this mentality? There would be nothing great about our country; but instead, we had leaders who made a decision to commit to something great.

What is it that you need to commit to that you have been holding back on?

Maybe it is your spouse you have been holding back on? Maybe it is your family? Maybe it is your entrepreneurial spirit you have been holding back on? Now is your time to make the decision to commit and never back down.

What steps are you going to take to ensure your success? What are you going to do differently today that you did not do yesterday? You can no longer think the way you thought yesterday and achieve the great results tomorrow.

The definition of insanity

is doing the same thing over and over, but expecting a different result.

Does that sound familiar to you? Wake up, go to work, come home, eat dinner, go to bed, and repeat the same cycle tomorrow.

If this sounds like your life I am describing, then there is so much more you are missing out on. Only you can answer the question of what is lacking in your life. Our lives are but a vapor that passes before our very eyes; and before we know it, this life of ours will be over. We can only look back at the decisions we did and did not make. I guarantee that the majority of people will reflect back with remorse not on what they did but on all of the opportunities they missed out on because of that word fear.

What do you want? Do you want to be the person who looks back and says, “What if?” Or do you want to be the person who inspires someone else to continue on. I can personally tell you that I want to be the individual who has someone say to me in twenty years, “Because of you, I did not give up.” I can only hope to have that kind of impact upon the lives of those around me. Think about the decisions made by generations before us, and then think about the generations ahead of us. What kind of example are we setting forth?

More specifically, what decisions are you making today to positively impact your family, our society, our country, and the world around us?

Whatever it is you want out of life, you must make a conscious decision to go all-in. Yet, we live in a society that teaches us to dab a little here, and dab a little there, and life needs to

Streetscapes And Summer In The City

by Ali Elizabeth Turner It was a “pedal-to-themetal” Monday morning, and there was much to discuss. The most obvious was the odd sight of stop signs covered in plastic set in the bulbouts near the Courthouse.

The mayor got right to it: “We have street lights that are so old that we can’t get parts for them, and it’s going to cost $161,000 each to replace them,” he said. If we had had time to joke as we often do, I would have asked him, “So the solution is stop signs?” But, I didn’t, as I knew a reasonable answer would be soon forthcoming.

Mayor Ronnie and Holly Hollman proceeded to tell me about our TAP grant, which stands for Transportation Alternative Program, and is designed to address a number of traffic-related needs, including accessible sidewalks. The mayor was quick to point out that some parts of the curbs in the bulb-outs were going to need to be redone due to the angle of

the accessible slope being just enough off that it can damage a tire. However, now the entire set of Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance issues are going to be completely taken care of while the courthouse square gets even more beautiful. The new overhead traffic lights will be the last phase of the project, and the old-style stop signs are only temporary.

The sidewalk renovations are going to make it possible for anyone in a wheelchair to be able to get into the Courthouse.

As part of the project, upgraded electrical cable will be laid to accommodate the new overhead lights as well as the new “Acorn” street lamps which will line the Square. They will be consistent with the lamps and flower baskets that circle the Courthouse proper, and will beautify the town. “We have three

things we are trying to accomplish here,” said the Mayor. “We have to become ADA compliant, we are trying to prepare well for traffic growth in the future, and in the process the town will be beautified,” he added.

We moved on to all the cool things that are going on in the hot summer in our city. The Arts League, in cooperation with the Huntsville Symphony Orchestra sponsored a violin camp that went on the week of June

25th. Violinist Claire Grisham ran the camp, and taught the kids everything from how to bow (pronounced bo) and finger, how to score music, and Italian musical terms such as “andante,” “presto,” and “largo.” They showed me the videos taken of the kids, and I was impressed. On Thursday, the 28th of June, High Cotton Arts also sponsored a free street con-

cert with “chick-duo” Roses and Cigarettes, who happened to arrive in their car while the camp was still in session. One little miss who Holly described with a smile as “sassy” insisted that R&C get out their guitar and play for the campers. So, they did, to the delight of all. The same little gal played her original composition that she had written earlier in the week. “The Roses

We talked about the Kiddie Karnival being around for more than 60 years, and how AHS Football Coach Cody Gross makes it a requirement of being on the team for his players to volunteer; they help out with the kids and gain fans for the fall season in the process. City Councilman Frank Travis had directed an NAACPsponsored night of entertainment through the ACT-SO organization, whose tagline is “Lead-

The City of Athens also acknowledged some of the most important people on our “town team,”

Darryl Worley came down to the Dealers’Auto Auction with signed guitars that were auctioned off for the Make A Wish Foundation, and talked about how well-known musicians are getting excited about the Scout House getting finished.

Who knows what greatness will come out of it? Then it was time for a quick prayer along the lines of “Lord, help the boy,” and Ronnie had to roll. It is indeed a grand summer in the city.

Honoring Annie

Some of you might be familiar with my dog, Annie.

She was quite a great dog and has her own Facebook page – Annie’s Canine Litter Patrol.

Annie and I would take long walks together. There were several things I had to gather together before our walks – leash, collar, cell phone, keys, treats, and two plastic bags. The first bag was for picking up litter we saw along the way. Annie would find it, and I would pick it up. She could have done it without me, but without opposable thumbs, she had a hard time handling the bag.

Annie also never wanted to be without me.

She was such a faithful companion.

I never thought I could remember that or spell it for that matter, but over the last three weeks, I have learned more than I’d like to know about it. Annie’s immune

Annie would want all the dogs out there with human companions to encourage the practice of picking up litter on their walks. It’s a simple act that makes a big impact.

The second bag was… well, we know what the second bag was for because no one wanted to step in it. Annie would agree that no dog’s “land mine” should be left behind for someone to find with their shoe.

KALB used Annie’s page to encourage pet owners to be responsible and to go the extra mile while out on walks. As long as we are out there walking our dogs, why not just bend over and pick up litter we see along the way? It’s not that much trouble, and I don’t know about yours, but my waistline could use the work.

I am brokenhearted that Annie was one that did not respond well, and I had to say goodbye to my faithful companion on July 1 after just 6 years. She was sweet natured and loved everyone, especially when she

I would encourage dog owners to be aware of changes in your dog’s behavior, lack of color or blood spots on mouth tissue, red spots on their belly, and/or bleeding from nose or gums for no apparent reason. These things are simple to explain away if you aren’t aware that these symptoms can indicate a more serious problem. I will forever wonder what might have happened if I’d been aware of this condition; so, I’m sharing with you.

Cooking with Anna

I Found My Thrill On… Blueberry Corn Salad

My parents live in a cabin in a remote area of Lamar County Alabama. It is beautiful there – peaceful, serene, calming.

My grandfather built the cabin from the ground up, even the floor-to-ceiling rock fireplace. All the beams in the house, as well as the stair rail leading up to the loft, came directly from his childhood home. You can sit on the porch and relax on the swing while gazing at the pond in front of the house or take a walk down the hammock and relax the afternoon away. It is a little piece of heaven on earth.

Next to my father’s workshop is a patch of blueberry bushes.

These are the best blueberries you have ever eaten! While picking them, be sure to bring plenty of buckets because we always have a bumper crop. They are little bites of sugar!

Delicious!

Now, you can make a scrumptious blueberry pie, or a fantastic blueberry jam. But if you are wanting something fresh, something a little different, try making this wonderful Blueberry Corn Salad. Blueberry Corn Salad

What You Need:

6 ears of fresh sweet corn 1 cup fresh blueberries 1 small cucumber, sliced ¼ cup red onion, finely chopped ¼ cup fresh cilantro, chopped 1 jalapeno pepper, seeded and finely chopped 1 avocado, diced 2 Tbsp lime juice 2 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil 1 Tbsp honey ½ tsp ground cumin Salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

a large bowl combine corn, blueberries, cucumber, red onion, cilantro, jalapeno, and avocado.

In a large pot, bring salted water to boil. Add corn.

Cook, covered for 5 minutes, or until tender.

For the dressing, in a mason jar, combine lime juice, oil, honey, cumin, salt, and pepper. Cover and shake well to combine. Add to salad and toss.

When cool enough to handle, cut corn from cobs. In

The concept of stability has suffered from the largely inaccurate perception of being boring and lacking imagination.

Successful fundamental institutions are anything but antiquated. Solidifying one’s core values is no different than building a home with a secure foundation that is able to withstand various levels of trauma. That type of dependability is not unexciting; it is the beginning of a viable adventure.

Risk is a necessity of life. As expressed by the former Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, “The size of your dreams must always exceed your current capacity to achieve them. If your dreams do not scare you, they are not big enough.” If you never reach beyond yourself, you’ll never grow. The next qualifier is to gauge how much that dream ought to “scare” you.

That is unique to each individual; however, it should not exceed your ability to manage it. Be audacious and daring, but don’t be foolish.

Personal accomplishments in the small things will greatly affect how much you can invest in your goals. The thinner you spread yourself, the higher the probability of failure. Obstacles will manifest. The capability to manage them alongside your dreams will either prolong or expedite your reward of success.

The 35th Anniversary Of Frame Gallery And Art

examples of Tony’s work can be seen throughout our house. Earlier this year, Tony told me that he was thinking about selling Frame Gallery, and I promised to keep my ear to the ground in case I met someone who would be a good fit and do him proud. We also began to plan his article for the 35th anniversary of the shop in case that just-right person hadn’t yet crossed his path.

In 2014, Tracie found herself in need of a job, and Tony found himself in need of someone to help organize frames

and projects, as well as take care of customer service. Tracie had worked for Athens Florist for 3 ½ years, and also has experience as an accountant. In addition, she has a gift of organization that I wish I could clone! Tony taught her how to pick out frames and put things together, and under the watchful eye of long time Frame Gallery right-hand-man Dennis Martin, Tracie learned the framing trade. Dennis has an eye for precision as well as art. He was part of the team that designed and fabricated the robotic arm on the Space Shuttle, and did woodworking as a “serious hobby.” He started working for Tony in 2010. Dennis says, “I like it here. I like what I’m doing, and I am going to stick with it.”

Enter a childhood school chum of Tony’s, a successful businessman, but one who knew nothing about the custom framing business. The silent partner saw great potential in carrying on the Frame Gallery tradition, and bought the business with the understanding that Tracie and Dennis would run it. Remodeling, including new flooring and windows, started in March when the shop changed hands, and now there is much more display space.

In addition to this whirlwind of change, Tracie married her high school sweetheart in May, and since then, as Frame Gallery’s manager, she has

been rearranging and organizing the display of frame samples and art work throughout. The place is busy, and once again I have had the chance to be a most satisfied custom framing customer. Let me tell you about it: For the June 15th edition of Athens Now, I wrote a tribute piece about Wayne Huff, the co-founder of our paper, who recently passed after a tough battle with melanoma. I wanted his wife Deborah to have a special bereavement gift; and through tears I told Tracie and Dennis what I wanted, which was a beautifully framed copy of the article preserved behind conservation glass. Their eyes lit up at the prospect of creating such a piece,

Finished projects waiting for their owners to come pick them up and in a word, they nailed it. The sight of the finished product made me cry all over again. The dark wooden frame had just enough decoration, and they triple-matted it with the colors we used in the article. They more than proved that they could carry on Tony Cooper’s tradition of creating superb custom-framed pieces at a fair price, and

even if we weren’t doing this article, I would want everyone to know it.

It seemed a bit odd, having first-hand experience with their quality of work, to ask them my standard, “I-have-choices-whyshould-I-come-to-you?” question, but I wanted to hear from them how they view their craft. Tracie told me that it centered around a commitment

to quality, courtesy, and taking care of customers.

“Some people are sentimental, and for example, we were able to frame a burned picture of a man’s wife. The picture had been burned in a fire and was nearly destroyed. First the man lost his house, and then his wife died. Being able to have the only

picture he had left of her, albeit burned, carefully custom-framed and made beautiful through loss, was healing to the man’s heart.

Tracie told me that she has some customers contract for a framing job, and they come and visit it, paying for it in installments until they can take it home to a place of honor. “That’s

fine with us,” she said.

Perhaps Dennis said it best when he stated simply, “I treat it like I made it for myself.” If that is what you are looking for in a custom framing establishment, then come and help Frame Gallery and Art celebrate their 35th year in business.

Judge Hundley – Looking For The Bluebird Hole

Judge Richard L. “Dick” Hundley was smart, colorful, and a bit eccentric. He was one of my favorite judges. I tried many cases before him until he retired in 1994. Shortly after I returned to Athens in November 1968 to practice law, Hundley, who was District Attorney at the time, was appointed Circuit Judge by Governor Albert Brewer.

Athens lawyer, Jere Trent was Hundley’s first and only Deputy D.A. back in 1966, when he was 28 years old and wearing a flat top. Judge Bloodworth called Trent “Deputy Dog.” Trent and Hundley became fast friends and went on at least 30 elk hunting trips to the Rockies over the years.

When Hundley was D.A. and prosecuting a rapist, the defendant’s lawyer brought to court the back seat of the car where the rape occurred.

His intention was to persuade the jury there wasn’t enough room for the rape to occur.

Hundley pounced. “The defendant has the audacity to bring his work bench into this solemn hall of justice,” he told the jury. The defendant was convicted. When a lawyer was making a stupid argument to the court, Judge Hundley would say, “Counselor, you gonna hav’ta pour that whiskey back in the jug.” Hundley had no patience for b. s. arguments. He would

interrupt, “Counselor, just show me to the hole where the bluebird flies.” In other words, stop the b. s. and get to your point.

One hot summer day back in the early 1970s, Judge Hundley was hearing a contentious divorce case in the old Limestone County Courthouse before it was remodeled with central air. Ancient ceiling fans whirred monotonously, stirring the heat in the courtroom.

The day was growing long. Neither party would budge an inch.

They argued over every stick of furniture, the wheelbarrow, yard rake, hoe, and even the hammer. Finally, they got down to who would get the coffee pot. The husband said he loved good coffee, and he not only wanted the pot, he needed it. The wife wouldn’t agree. “I bought it and I want it and that’s that!”

The husband claimed it was purchased from a joint bank account.

Hundley, who was ready to go home, leaned over the bench toward the wife in the witness box and asked, “Ma’am, how much did that coffee pot cost?”

“Twenty dollars!” she said.

Hundley summoned the bailiff to the bench and lifted a twenty from his wallet. “Bailiff go across the street to U.G. White’s and buy this good lady a damn coffee pot. We’re going home.”

One morning, I was at-

“Yo Honor, I represent Mister Brown. He can’t be in court,” he whined.

“He’s in the hospital. I move for a continuance of his case.”

Hundley reviewed the court file then looked over his reading glasses perched on the end of his nose.

“Counselor, it appears that your client wasn’t in court the last time – and the time before that,” said Hundley.

“Yes, yo Honor.”

“What’s him?”

“Yo Honor, I don’t know for shore,” said the lawyer. “His family says he’s in Athens-Limestone Hospital.”

Hundley was suspicious. He picked up the phone and called Athens-Limestone Hospital to determine if the defendant was actually in the hospital. “Bring him to the third floor of the courthouse,” Hundley said. No way was I going to miss this show. I watched out a west window. Pretty soon an ambulance rolled up. Two EMTs got out, opened the back door, and pulled out a gurney. A nurse exited holding an IV bottle connected to the patient. The defendant was rolled into the courtroom before Judge Hundley.

Hundley looked down at the poor fellow. “What’s wrong with you this time, Mr. Brown?” he asked.

“I don’t know, Jedge,” he mumbled weakly. Satisfied that the poor fellow was actually ill, Hundley said, “Well, I wish you a speedy recovery. Case continued.”

Hundley was a Civil War scholar and could recount minute details of long ago battles. Perhaps his interest was spurred by reading about the exploits of his great grandfather’s brother, Daniel Robertson Hundley, a Harvard educated lawyer, who commanded the 31st Alabama Infantry and escaped from a Yankee prison. According to Jere Trent, when Hundley was in high school, he and his buddies decided to build a cannon. Having completed it, they were curious to know if it would fire. They mixed up a batch of gunpowder and loaded the cannon and pointed it toward the Tennessee River. “Fire!”

They did and it did. The ball struck the Decatur railroad bridge causing damage. The boys fled the scene. An FBI investigation turned up no saboteurs and no suspects.

Hundley, a 32nd degree Mason, was a radio operator gunner on a B-25 during WWII. After the war he attended Auburn on the G.I. Bill where he received a B.S., then on to Alabama for a law de-

gree.

Following the construction of the new Morgan County Courthouse, and long before there were security checkpoints, Judge Hundley designed his own bullet proof bunker in the courtroom. He stacked thick law books, two rows deep, behind his court bench. If a shooter opened up, his plan was to drop to the floor behind the books, then crawl military style through a rear door to his office where a gun was located.

A lawyer with a nervous tick that often appeared before Judge Hundley would rub his neck and twist his head.

I asked Hundley about it. “Yeah, in his former life, he was a house thief or hanged.”

“He loved the Rocky Mountains,” Trent said. He purchased a log house near Pagosa Springs, Colorado, and had it dismantled and moved to his 40-acre farm in Morgan County.

Before he died, he requested that his ashes be scattered in the Rockies.

Trent, who delivered the eulogy at Hundley’s funeral in September 2007, carried a zip lock plastic sandwich bag filled with Hundley’s ashes to the Rockies and scattered them in the beautiful San Juan Mountains of Southern Colorado.

Even in death, Judge Hundley was a bit different.

Alabama And Our Growing Concern With Alligators

by Joel Allen Years ago I watched a movie titled, Jaws, directed by Steven Spielberg.

Thank you, Mr. Spielberg, I will not swim in the ocean now! Then, there was another movie that I believe was titled, Alligator, directed by Lewis Teague. Thank you, Mr. Teague; now, I definitely don’t swim where I cannot see into the water. Where am I going with all this?

The title says it all, and I don’t mean college football. Roll Tide!

Recently, there have been a number of sightings of alligators here in North Alabama, and the number seems to be growing.

My Facebook page gets a few videos each month of some local citizen seeing one, and I repost it so other folks can see what is out there. Thanks to these sightings, I no longer fish

or camp near our rivers or waterways. Gators have been sighted in creeks, ponds, rivers, and other waterways; so be careful.

They are most active during the summertime and can be seen sunning themselves often. According to my research, gators tend to avoid humans or hightraffic areas if possible.

So, if the mood strikes someone to hike to remote areas, they must be aware that the possibility of running across one of these creatures is becoming very likely each year.

What I have learned from a little bit of research is that in 1979, over fifty alligators were released into our Alabama waterways in hopes of saving the species. It was even implied that gators could help control the beaver population, but that so far has just been

a rumor. The public did not like this, and the idea was retracted with the Conservation Officers tasked to recapture and remove the gators. According to my information, only three were recaptured.

The others have been slowly breeding and increasing in population.

I want everyone to know and understand that the threat is real and to take caution when walking their dog(s) or going to the rivers or waterways of any kind to fish, hike, or camp.

I am not trying to be a fearmonger; but by making my readers aware, I hope they avoid tragedy that could happen here in Alabama and has happened in Florida. So far, the majority of attacks from gators have happened in Florida. I have witnessed video footage of people running across alli-

gators in Alabama. I even saw one video where two guys were messing with a gator, and I just shook my head and thought, “Why provoke something that can move lightning fast and kill you?!”

Another reason I am passing this warning to everyone is for the benefit of our canine family members. If they are tied outside near a location where a gator might be, then they are in danger and could become an easy meal for these creatures. No one wants to have the memory of that on their mind. Don’t even assume that a fence will stop a gator from getting your dog. I have seen video footage of a gator climbing a chain link fence. Please take precautions!

Keep in mind that gators are a master of camouflage

when in the water. They can remain under water for a long period of time and not even be noticed when in shallow water. Ever see the video of the two water buffaloes arguing about whether that was a log in the water or not? They argue for a bit, and the one that kept saying it was a log gets on the gator and jumps up and down. The gator eats the water buffalo. So, heed my warning folks and keep those fur babies safe. Pay close attention when out on the waterways. I can’t say this enough: These creatures can blend into their surroundings and not be seen until it is too late!

Lastly, I cannot emphasize enough the importance of understanding these creatures and their habits. If everyone takes the time to study gators and their habits, it increases the chance of surviving an encounter with them. Honestly, if I see a gator or suspect one is near me, I am leaving the area before I get into trouble. I am not a “law breaker,” but if I am in danger, or one of my babies (human or fur), then that gator will be annihilated real quick. Just saying!

“Remember to love your dogs because they love you. Maybe not the way you want them to, like chewing up your favorite shoes or what not, but that is just love chewing. Be thankful for the time you have with them always.”

Men and Depression

Several months ago, I had the pleasure of volunteering for NAMI-H (National Alliance on Mental Illness in Huntsville) at a health fair event. On the table, I had placed numerous brochures on various topics from crisis services information to support groups to specific mental illness descriptions.

One of the brochures was titled, “Men and Depression.” Many people stopped by the table to talk and look over the material. I noticed that the most popular flyer taken, sometimes openly, but more often furtively, was “Men and Depression.” The accompanying statement was to the effect of, “I know someone who needs this.” Although June was National Men’s Health Month, it is still the perfect time to address the mental health side, specifically men and depression.

Depression can be hard to talk about. It can be so difficult that many men end up silently struggling for years.

Some finally reach out, when they hit rock bottom.

Others, sadly, don’t reach out, which is one of the reasons that men account for 3 ½ times the number of suicides as women.

illness, you also fight the stigma attached to it. And for men, the fear of looking weak or too sensitive only adds to the strain.

Consequently, men often choose not to seek treatment because of such selfprotection mechanisms as anger, shame, guilt, and resentment. Here are some common misperceptions that stand between men and their recovery from depression: 1. Depression will make you a burden to others.

You are more likely to place pressure and stress on those who care about you by being unhealthy and refusing to seek treatment. Asking for help does not make you a burden.

Most people feel good about helping a loved one; so don’t try to hide what you’re going through. It’s more frustrating when

someone needs help but refuses to ask for it.

2. Talking about depression won’t help. Ignoring a problem won’t make it go away. You may think you know all the answers, and that talking won’t help the situation. My experience has been that sometimes issues seem like a huge deal in our minds, but actually verbalizing the problem can decrease some of the anxiety and despair. Talk therapy can be helpful in gaining fresh perspectives and learning new coping skills.

3. Real men don’t ask for help. Sometimes it’s helpful to look at the world from a different viewpoint to determine what might be contributing to the depression. A therapist can assist you in becoming your own problem solver by presenting alternative treatment

options. I encourage my male clients to envision tackling depression as a team effort. We are working together to defeat the enemy!

4. Men should be able to control their feelings.

Depression is a mood disorder that can make you feel down when there is absolutely no apparent reason. It is difficult to control what we feel, but we can learn to manage how we react. This would include choosing to face our problems before they get out of hand.

5. Depression = Weakness. There is absolutely no correlation between depression and personal weakness. Depression is a serious mental health condition that many men battle every day. We treat physical challenges like diabetes and high blood pressure

without question. Men can actually show their strength by working toward building support to get better.

by Roy Williams When is it okay to say “No” to prescription drugs? As most of you know, America is becoming a sicker and sicker nation.
