Dear Chief Brown, I have literally cheered this week as I have watched you handle an impossibly tragic situation, one whose heartache cannot be borne alone, and one whose weight has clearly been shouldered by the support of citizens and the prayers of people of faith all over our great nation. I live in a marvelous small city in North Alabama named Athens, and in the wake of the assassinations that occurred in your town, our Police Chief, Floyd Johnson, wrote a beautiful letter to help all of us, blue or any other pigment, get through what are deeply troubling times. I would like to quote him, and then tell you what has been happening here as a result.

"It is somber to think how officers in Athens have been enjoying the smiles and laughter of children while in Dallas, officers and the community are in mourning.

There have been cards, the phone has been positively ringing off the wall with positive messages for those who form the thin blue line, and Chief Johnson told me recently that “the response has been unbelievable.” He also told me, “We are planting seeds that won’t be seen

Trump On The VA: “It Will Be Fixed”

The embarrassing decay of the Veterans’ Administration has been a widespread subject of discussion nationwide and in this column, and as is so often the case with scandals in the federal government, there seems to be a spike in coverage, and then it fades away.

And, whatever you may think about the presumptive GOP Presidential candidate, Donald Trump, I must admit that it does my heart good to hear that he has committed himself, should he be elected, to dig into the mess and begin to give our troops the care they deserve beginning in January of 2017.

The Republican Convention is nearly upon us, and Mr. Trump made

a speech in Virginia wherein he made some sweeping promises with respect to repairing the VA. Normally I am cynical when it comes to political promises, but I think that if anyone can bring some improvement to a failing government agency, it just might be the Donald. Why? Because even though he isn’t ex-mil, he did attend a military academy, and I believe that if one has an open heart, the things that are instilled in a military academy student are the same as the things that are instilled in a soldier. There’s something else: he isn’t kidding when he says he’s “really good at things like that,”

of the United States government, and it will take sound business practices to turn it around.

However, rather than having the goal be to turn a profit or please the stockholders, the first order of business is to begin to do whatever is necessary so that the benefits veterans are promised when they agree to go into harm’s way for us actually reach them, and in a timely manner.

“The VA scandals are widespread and totally inexcusable,” Trump said, while in Virginia Beach. He also discussed the agency’s continual failure to treat soldiers’ physical and mental health disorders, the internal conflict in the agency, its toxic corporate culture, lack of accountability and poor management practices.

He underscored the need for an immediate improvement of treatment for vets suffering from

mental ill health, and with regard to the suicides that are occurring, especially amongst older veterans, Mr. Trump said, It is a “national tragedy that is not talked about.”

He promised that every veteran will have a choice when it comes to selecting and seeing their physician. In the Trump Administration, vets will be able to go to a private facility if they prefer. Mr. Trump has also vowed to help vets find jobs. It seems that his desire to help veterans stems from the fact that he truly appreciates them, rather than viewing soldiers as a somewhat necessary evil. Undoubtedly, if he can keep the promise he made, he will have the devotion of soldiers everywhere.

“You defend America, and America will defend you,” he said. And I say, “Make it so, Mr. Trump, make it so.”

Hole In The Wall Education Studio: Empowering Actors To Go “From Page To Stage”

by Ali Elizabeth Turner Julian Rojas Taylor describes himself as a first generation American, and was born and raised in New Jersey. His father was tragically killed while visiting his homeland of Peru when Julian was very small.

Julian’s mom remarried, his stepfather adopted him, and Julian, who most often goes

by James, took his stepdad’s last name. Both his mother and stepfather served in the US Army, and James laughs as he describes their shock when he decided to become a Marine. That friendly rivalry and banter continue to this day. James’ family had ties to Alabama, and moved here 26 years ago to work at Redstone Arsenal. He graduated from a private Christian school in the area.

After his stint with the Marines and an honorable discharge as a Sergeant, James found himself following an unusual path, and used the discipline he developed in the Corps to immerse himself in the educational and developmental rigors of the complicated world of the performance arts. He studied in New York as well as Los Angeles, and has performed in more than 50 films, in music videos, on stage, and has written plays, as well as a substantive 350 page autobiography. His work ethic is daunting, and he has a unique business here in Athens called Hole in the Wall Educational Studio, located in a loft above Grand Central on Jefferson Street. “Actually,” he said, “it is more accurate to call it an educational studio, rather than an acting studio, because much more is taught there than acting.” Hole in the Wall is a division of James’ umbrella organization, called TBC Enterprises, which has a division that supplies local theatres with set production,

I then asked him to imagine the end of a perfect day at Hole in the Wall, and he described it as, “A timid, redhaired young woman just had a breakthrough, the ‘scene work took root,’ it was like jazz--there was 'improv' as well as structure.”

His vision for Hole in the Wall is to take kids and young adults who have had no previous acting experience from what is called, “page to stage.” Rather than produce plays, which for most young actors function as the equivalent of recitals, he wants to operate as a conduit to supply other production companies with young, well-trained actors who can both soar with creativity as well as function in the required realms of discipline that are necessary to succeed in the art of performance.

James says, “I am a Marine,

and that makes me a nomalarkey kind of person, but that doesn’t mean I am rigid and rule-oriented. What I am teaching is an art form, and art does not follow rules, but rather guidelines.” I can say from having talked with James at length that he does indeed possess a great sense of humor, and as a person myself who has always enjoyed from a distance the craft of film making in particular, I thoroughly enjoyed talking with him and hearing his story.

I love watching all the home makeovers, dreaming about where I would place designer furniture and, of course, choosing the newest wall colors. I say to myself, “STOP DREAMING,” as I wake up to realize this is a 60 minute TV show with lots of money and sponsors to get the job done. Spending a lot of money to bring your drab, dated, humble abode to life

Religion, Meet Politics ─ You Two Were Brothers Once

by Rosemary Dewar Politicians are often deemed the modern-day equivalent of the tax-collectors who were loathed in the Bible, and it is the religious community which is to blame. Religious revivals had political implications, specifically in our western culture. The human rights prescribed by God were, and still are, worth defining and defending.

Every week, pastors and teachers encourage their congregations to take back the culture for righteousness sake. They exclaim, “Become an artist, an entrepreneur, a doctor, or an executive!” Remarkably, the calling to rise as a politician is under-emphasized or disregarded.

Essentially they are saying, “We will pray for them, but don’t even think of becoming one.”

Grave mistake.

The God they claim to wor-

ship has given, promised, and endowed specific, irrevocable, and inalienable rights to all. This inarguable aspect of our history goes unacknowledged. The United States, from its inception, had men who jeopardized all comforts to define, defend, and die for those rights.

From the birth of Protestantism to England’s Golden Age, men fought to represent themselves before God. From George Whitfield’s Great Awakening of Evangelism to the birth of United States of America, men fought to represent every man spiritually or socially.

Each conflict resulted in governmental reconstruction, followed by a period of persecution. The fight was both expected and welcomed. Religious freedom, self-determination, and the liberty to pursue both were paramount. Tolerance of an authoritarian rule was not an

option.

What made the Charismatic religious movement different? There was no sacrifice.

There was only a virtuous rebellion in response to hedonistic rebellion. The movement was devoid of political reinforcement or result. War was the buzzword of the ‘60s through the ‘80s and was culturally interpreted as the outgrowth of hatred or cruelty. The honor gained through war was lost.

Having a human right worth preserving at any cost was not only diminished, it was extinguished.

The West’s religious community lost its narrative to refrain from evil, just as America lost its determination to combat acts of evil.

Dehumanization became socially acceptable as long as it was self-inflicted. Political disputes ranging from collectivism to sexual liberation were then acquiesced to, and

now have been surrendered as the result of a powerless, counterfeit morality.

God’s mandated standards for humanity are persistently being chipped away. The imposition of a loosely enlightened morality is created by those who in reality are closet authoritarians. They will selectively protect those who are willing to compromise their principles in order to gain a false sense of security.

America’s religious community knows their rights because they believe God, but they have forgotten how to defend them. God has given them a country with a decree to treat man the way God has continually, and will endlessly treat man. They are unaware of the gift that the United States truly is in comparison to every other country on Earth.

The rights of humanity have been fought for man-to-man, idea-to-idea, for centuries.

The cause has been to secure what God commanded His creation to possess. Fundamentally, the struggle will never change. Americans must be willing to get back onto the battlefield of ideas and ideals. The United States of America won on that battlefield, and if it is going to

America is asking itself the question it did 240 years ago, which is, “Are you willing to live without your rights, or die with them?’’

One of our founding fathers, Samuel Adams, said, “The liberties of our country, the freedom of our civil constitution, are worth defending against all hazards: And it is our duty to defend them against all attacks.”

Do you agree?

You ought to.

There is good news, other than the ‘Good News’. Pastors have heard the call.

Hundreds are campaigning across the country. Offices such as city council, mayor, school board, commissioner, governor, and representative are being fought for to be filled by God-respected men and women. That is how it is done.

Godspeed, America.

Honoring our Fallen Heroes

“Honoring our fallen heroes, that’s what it is all about.” That was the answer I received when I asked Bobby (Skip) Ferguson why he wanted to put two monuments on the Courthouse Square to show the names of three local heroes who were killed while serving our country. Although all three are together in a display at the Alabama Veterans Museum, we need to do more to publicly honor them. We already have monuments and statues honoring our troops back to the Civil War, and I think it is time we honor this generation.

The three individuals are U.S. Marine Capt William E. Winters, Marine Cpl Adam Loggins, and Army PFC Ricky Turner.

In what was the deadliest attack against the U.S. Marines since the battle of Iwo Jima, U.S. Marine Capt William E. Winters made the ultimate sacrifice. While on a “peace keeping mission” in Beirut, Lebanon, Capt Winters was among the 241 American troops who lost their life that day. At 6:22 am on October 23, 1983, a truck carrying 2000 pounds of explosives drove into the Marine compound in Beirut, Lebanon, and crashed into the 1st Battalion, 8th Marine Regimental Battalion Landing Team barracks. The bombing was traced to Hezbollah, a militant and polit-

ical group that originated in Lebanon in 1982. The FBI called it the largest non-nuclear bomb in history. Capt Winter was posthumously promoted to Major. “We must keep their memories alive.

These men made a great sacrifice for peace, but so did their families,” said his daughter Amanda Moore.

U.S. Marine Lance Cpl Adam Loggins wanted to look back at his life and feel like he had done something. He always wanted to join the Marines; although his family tried to talk him out of it, after 9/11 there was no stopping him. Adam was killed by sniper fire on April 26, 2007, while

conducting combat operations in the Anbar province of Iraq. He was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 6th Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Ma-

rine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

Army PFC Ricky L. Turner died January 16, 2009, while serving in

support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.

PFC Turner was in Baghdad, Iraq, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his patrol unit; he died of wounds sustained during this attack. He was assigned to the 3rd Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, N.C. “Ricky wanted to join the military and stand up for his country, and he died doing what he wanted to do,” said his father, James Lee Turner.

Maj Winter will be on one monument titled, “Beirut, Lebanon.” Cpl Loggins and PFC Turner will share the other one, which will be named

“Iraq/Afghanistan.” We pray that we never have to add another name on the monument; however, we need to leave some additional space because the war in the Middle East is not over.

Xeriscaping: Landscaping for Water Conservation

by Lynne Hart I’ve lived in Athens for 17 years, and it was most difficult for me to adjust to the hot, humid summers. I had to learn a whole new way of gardening after just about everything I planted failed to survive my southern brown thumb.

Over the years, my position has brought me into contact with people and websites that shed a great deal of light on where I was going wrong. I remained in my Northeast Ohio garden mode in my thinking, and that didn’t work here. Summers in Cleveland are not so hot, and humidity levels are lower. There is not nearly the amount of clay in the soils of northeast Ohio as we find here. So, I had to do some research to learn what would and would not grow in my new home city.

I have written articles on the importance of choosing native plants for landscaping, much of which I have applied with great success. Recently, I was introduced to another type of landscaping that takes into consideration the amount of water available, or lack of water. It is called xeriscaping.

Xeriscaping is a method of using landscaping and horticultural strategies that minimize water use. This method can help property owners reduce their water use by onethird, which is very helpful in drought-prone areas such as the Tennessee Valley!

According to the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, plant selection in a xeriscaped garden may vary from area to area, but there are 7 basic principles that can be applied anywhere.

•Group plants by similar water use, as well as appearance.

•If sites are dry, choose as many plants with low water requirements as possible,

such as some of the ornamental grasses, barberries, Chinese hollies, and junipers.

•Reduce the amount of what is officially referred to as “turfgrass” or lawn area. Turfgrass is the largest water user in landscaping. Use it only where necessary, or consider some of the newer, droughtresistant types.

•Use plenty of organic material (peat moss, pinebark, compost) in preparing the soil.

•Use about 4 inches (no more) of mulch (wood chips, shredded bark). Mulch reduces water use by slowing evaporation, and it adds organic matter to the soil as well as helps prevent erosion.

•Use efficient watering systems. For example, use a sprinkler that will target the areas that require water, and do not overspray onto rocky or paved areas.)

•Prune, fertilize, and divide plants regularly.

Before you begin, you will want to assess your garden site.

By looking at the property, you may find ways of using watersaving landscape techniques.

Look for dry or rocky areas, as well as areas where water might pool. You also want to note the amount of sun each area receives.

Once you have assessed the area, select plants and shrubs that do well in those conditions, and group them together.

Plant selection will be one of the most important factors in whether or not your garden will survive long term. Here are more tips: •Use only plant varieties that are well adapted to your locality and soil conditions.

The wrong variety of plant may require greater amounts of fertilizer and water just to stay alive. Check with your local nursery, garden depart-

ment, or Extension Service for suggestions. You can also research native plant varieties online.

•Group plants with similar water needs together. For example, group the vegetables requiring more water together in the garden to make the most of your watering.

•Choose moisture-loving plants for wet, poorly drained sites and drought-tolerant plants for dry, sunny areas.

•Select and plant droughttolerant varieties that require minimal amounts of water.

Trees Trees are also vulnerable to our weather conditions. When making your selection, be sure to choose species that do well in this area. Some good selections would include oaks, ginkgo, hackberry, southern magnolia, Chinese pistache, American holly, golden-rain tree, and pines.

Turfgrass In most of our neighborhoods, the lawn (turfgrass) is the most prominent vegetation. A beautifully manicured, green lawn can be the pride and joy of any homeowner. Turfgrass will

withstand a rough and tumble game of football, absorb heat, and control erosion.

Turfgrass will also quickly suffer under drought conditions, and will consume more water than most all other plants.

Therefore, the question that should be asked is “Do I have too much grass?”. Look at your property critically. Are there shady areas where grass is not doing well? Do you have grass growing among and around your shrubs? Do you have large patches of grass just because you can’t think of anything else to do with your property?

Consider replacing turfgrass in areas which are difficult to

maintain with organic mulch or ground cover. This will reduce the work involved, and will reduce the need for heavy watering.

Be sure to care for the turfgrass you do have properly.

Check with your local Extension Office for information on proper fertilizer and lime application.

Rain Barrels Adding rain barrels to your landscaping will also help conserve water. Our friend, Rhonda Britton, from Water Wheels is an expert on this topic. Look for a more in depth article on this topic in a future issue.

Reasons To Go Outdoors

I realize it is hot outside and most of us are looking forward to cooler weather.

For me, no matter what the weather is, I have difficulty spending too much time cooped up indoors. Here are some reasons all of us need to spend more time outside.

A walk outside can boost creativity and concentration. When I am walking, hiking, or just pulling weeds, I find I do a lot of my best thinking. Studies show that

a stroll outside can actually improve brain function and mental focus. A study by psychologists from the University of Utah and University of Kansas found that backpackers scored 50 percent higher on creativity tests after spending just four full days in nature without any electronics.

Children with ADHD are likely to score higher on concentration tests after time outdoors.

Although we can obtain Vitamin D from foods like salmon and cheese, we get 80 to 90 percent of it from the sun. But remember - a little sun goes a long way; use sunscreen if you are going to be outside for more than a few minutes.

Nature is healing. Natural light may hold healing powers, according to a study from the University of Pittsburgh.

Researchers found that spinal surgery patients saw lower levels of both

pain and stress after they were exposed to more natural sunlight. In fact, patients exposed to 46 percent more sunshine took 22 percent less pain medication per hour.

Another study, suggests that getting outside remains just as important as we age. Seventy-yearolds who spent time outdoors daily reported fewer bouts of pain, and had less trouble sleeping. They also seemed to show less of a decline in day-to-day activities.

In other words, the outdoors may help us stay healthy later in life.

Frank Travis For City Council, Position 3: Serving Athens, Strengthening Alabama

His parents instilled the values of faith, family, personal enterprise and responsibility, a respect for his community and country, and they always encouraged him to develop his talents. “I wasn’t great at sports,” he told me, “although I tried real hard.” He began to cultivate what have gone on to become award winning music, storytelling, and theatrical skills as a result of participating with his childhood church in what was known as “Children Day.” He told me, “It was the one time of the year that kids were to be seen AND heard in church, and I also sang in the choir.” However, it was a little hiding place that he affectionately called “Treasure Island” where he expressed his imagination, learned how to think outside the box, practiced his acting skills, sang to all of creation, wrote, and in general improved his craft.

His career was spent here working at Brown’s Ferry, from which he recently retired, and he came up through the ranks until he was the Assistant Unit Operator, certified by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission. He was also a licensed reactor operator, and became a trainer for other up-and-coming assistants. He taught safety, systems, logic, communication skills, and conflict resolution. He had to re-certify in all of those areas as part of his responsibilities, but he found that people began to look to him as an “unofficial arbitrator.” People came to him for counsel, and one of the things he loved to do was help employees who were at odds with each other reach resolution and reconciliation.

skills he was certified to teach at Brown’s Ferry, coupled with having to be continually concerned with the safety of potentially millions of citizens, solidified his leadership skills.

Additionally, he became the choral director for the Round Island Male Chorus, a deacon and a Sunday School teacher at Round Island Baptist Church, was chosen the 2013 winner of the local amateur competition held at the annual Storytelling Festival, and is known in our area as “Mr. Poetry” because of his tender and thoughtful poetic treatments of sometimes diffi-

er students, and always he tries to teach life lessons. “I was raised to respect the janitor to the CEO,” he told me. I asked him why I should vote for him.

He replied, “My ability to communicate.” At Brown’s Ferry, as well as all the other aforementioned venues he became a master at “knowing his audience.” He said, “You may not get what you want, but you know that you were heard.”

He has a vision for serving Athens, and having it become such a model city that it serves to strengthen all of Alabama.

Much of that vision comes from

a desire “to provide young citizens the opportunity to grow,” especially through the arts. He understands that the arts are important because they constitute a “wellrounded education,” and he said with firmness that “God gives us talents, and allows cult subjects.

In February of 2016, Frank, along with Athens author Charlotte Fulton, produced a musical drama entitled “Arise and Build,” which was based on Mrs. Fulton’s book called, Hold the Fort. It told the wonderful story of the historic Trinity School, and played to sold-out crowds at the recently remodeled McCandless Performance Hall at Athens State University.

That was no small undertaking, but Frank has long been involved in both performing in and directing other productions in the Tennessee Valley.

He also wanted to express his love and respect for the late Athens City Councilman Jimmy Gill, whose position he seeks to fill. “I can never fill his shoes, but I will give my all to serve all,” he said, and he would appreciate your vote in order to do make that a reality.

The 15th Annual Ardmore Quarterback Club Car Show

ensure the show is a success, I think I now understand for the first time just how much a car show should more accurately be described as an art show. Last year’s winner was a late ‘40s Chevy truck, and both Brad and Eddie took a good deal of time to explain the marvel of how an old truck could be simultaneously be a “blast from the past,” as well as being brought up to today’s standards. They described it to me as “today’s truck with the look of yesterday,” and it was a beauty.

The first show was held back in 2000, and there were a grand total of seven cars which were entered in the competition. They could easily fit on the football field, and in 15 years the event has grown to where there have been as many as 1500 cars, and thousands of people come to see them. It is not just folks from Limestone, Madison, Morgan, Lauderdale, Jackson, Giles and Lincoln counties who attend; every year there are people from Florida, Mississippi, and beyond. It has been nicknamed “The Biggest Little Car Show in the South.”

Before I talk more about the show, please allow me to tell you a bit about the Quarterback Club, as well as the sponsors. The Quarterback Club was formed to raise money for the Ardmore High School football and cheerleading programs, and the show is the Club’s chief fundraiser. Brad Stovall’s Body Shop is the longest continual sponsor, and others include Ardmore Auto

While the entire event is held on the Tennessee side, both sides of the respective state lines come together to make it happen every year, rain or shine. Sheriff Mike Blakely provides vans to shuttle people to John Barnes Park, as well as spots along the way. There will be music performed by Fender Bender, and the band is sponsored by Paul Davis, a home recovery and remodeling outfit.

There will be concessions, the selection at this show is huge. It is entirely possible that the exact thing you are looking for is waiting for you, and for a restorer, the hunt is the best part.

Brad and Eddie went on to educate me about what is known as “Rat Rods.”

This is a trend that began about 10 years ago, and in the car world, it is akin to “shabby chic” in the interior design world. They look somewhat like the old hot rods, but crazier. They

The prize money is substantial. Brad Stovall’s shop is giving $1,500 for first prize, $1,000 for second prize, and $500 for third. There is a 50/50 drawing, and last year’s take was $4,700. This year there is a chance to win a gorgeous 1959 Ford Thunderbird, which is being donated by R&J Salvage.

Another feature of the Ardmore Car Show is the Swap Meet. There is a brisk market for old car and truck parts, and

can include trucks, and sometimes will make zany combos like an open hot rod front welded to an old Chevy rear.

At times the bodies are actually newer, but have been painted and distressed to look old and rusty. “A Rat Rod is a bunch of junk, but they make it work,” Brad said with a laugh.

Clearly what makes Brad and Eddie smile the most when they talk about the event is what was referred to earlier as the “art show.”

Each car or truck entered is a work of art, the result of a large investment, in terms of time, money, research, elbow grease, and the requisite “blood, sweat, and tears” that at the end of the day draws forth the “oohs and ahhs.” As Brad says, “each car tells a story, and the detail says it all.”

What Makes Ronnie Roll

After Bitterness, Some Sweetness

by Ali Elizabeth Turner We met a week ago—not in our usual time slot-and it was the morning after the horrific assassinations of police officers in Dallas. What could we say? Of course the Mayor’s attention was focused on our own community, both the citizens and those who protect them, and as many times as we have talked about public safety in past “Ronnies”, it was abundantly clear that what had just happened in Dallas “raised the bar to a new low-ness.”

We were pretty much stunned. I let him know that I planned on interviewing Chief Johnson, (see Publisher’s Point on page 3) and writing about our city’s determination to respond rather than react.

We met in the board room due to the fact that the street repair project outside his office on Hobbs was nearly loud enough to keep one from hearing one’s own thinking, and with his trademark Marks Mayoral humor, he looked at me as he poured us coffee and said, “Did you know that people complain when there are potholes to be filled, and people complain when we fill them?” I laughed.

Certainly our nation had been dealt a blow, and thankfully our city works diligently on all fronts to prevent the same kind of thing from happening here. However, there are no guarantees, other than the firm conviction that good is stronger than evil, and ultimately good

will triumph, if we just bother to apply it.

But then, he asked, “Have you heard what the kids have done?” For a moment I tensed up, because I was concerned that there had been more vandalism at PinchamLincoln or elsewhere.

“No sir,” I said. “They have decided to donate money to getting the windows repaired,” he said. I lit up with a smile, and waited for him to tell me more. He explained that the students from this past school year’s Mayor’s Youth Commission had decided to keep $500 in a fund in order to meet possible needs of incoming students who would join the Commission in the fall. Upon hearing about Trinity being essentially attacked,

they were outraged, and expressed their dismay in a letter that was published in the News-Courier. I had never thought about this before, but it hurt them to think that other people in the community would possibly lump them into the despicable designation of being “kids these days” by virtue of the fact that they were teen agers, and not because of who they were as people.

It seems we have a lot of that going on in our culture, i.e., judging people by label rather than their lives, but in the case of the youth of Athens, Alabama, they fought back with sweetness that manifested itself in financial sacrifice.

Mayor Ronnie asked me

if I could go to Trinity the same morning at 10 for an impromptu ceremony where representatives from the Youth Commission would present a check to representatives from the Athens Limestone Community Association. The ALCA has been the energy behind rebuilding Trinity/Pincham-Lincoln/ Ft. Henderson. Others in attendance included the Mayor, Chief Johnson, and people who just loved Athens and wanted to help. The check was to go toward fulfilling the insurance deductible so the replacement of the windows could be expedited. I changed some things in my schedule, went to the presentation, and had the privilege of taking the picture of the

event.

So, what was the sweetness? It was the attitude of the kids, and how they stepped up. It was the people who refused to be turned back from rebuilding Trinity. It was the watchful eye of our Mayor and our Police Chief; it was getting to pray and sing with Carolyn Williams as we stood in the kitchen of the room which had been dedicated to the late Jimmy Gill, and watched out for broken glass. It was being a part of a community in a state of discomfort that was being converted into something strong and good. And then, it was time for Ronnie, and the rest of us, to roll.

Forgiveness

by Deb Kitchenmaster Have you experienced a moment in time where you knew you were “stuck”? You tried in sundry ways to resolve a conflict(s) in a meaningful relationship, but the more time you gave to bring solution rather than pollution, there wasn’t any “shift” but “stuck” was the painful reality? I’m quite sure we all can relate. At the base of the “stuck” is usually something that you didn’t see coming and it just quite frankly threw you off balance.

As horse people, you know what that means!

You end up off the back of a horse and on the ground. OUCH! Just came in contact with the reality of how hard the ground actually is!

One of the healing properties that horses bring into human lives is their genuine ability of being ‘forgiving’ and modeling this for us.

The glue that keeps us stuck, more than likely, is unforgiveness. I read a quote from Kimberly Dawn which says, “It takes allot of energy to keep a grudge alive.

The longer there is a lack of forgiveness, the more bitterness, anger and self-pity poisons the blood and eats at the heart.

Hand it over to God and allow Him to show you the path to forgiveness.”

This is where God and horse unite to bring to us pathways to do life with a different attitude.

“True forgiveness is not an action after the fact; it is an attitude with which you enter each moment.”

Firearms: Do Your Homework!

by Paul Foreman None of us ever really knows exactly how we will react in a high stress situation. Experiencing a mass shooting like we saw last week in Dallas, Texas, is something in which very few Americans have ever found themselves. As a retired Deputy Sheriff from Southwest Florida, I think back to situations I was involved in and wonder how I ever did the things I did. At sixty-seven years young, I know if I were asked to do some of the things today I did back then, I would say, “Get someone else to do it, or call the cops!”

were policies and procedures we were required to follow. We had to respond to whatever we were dispatched to while driving in a safe manner. We were required to treat the public with courtesy and respect.

We were “supposed” to treat the bad guys with respect, too.

However, even at my age, there could come a time where I might be thrust into a situation in which I would not have a choice.

Something would have to be done. I would have to choose between fighting and dying. Back when I was a cop, I responded to everything from the mundane to the horrifying. But, I never responded to a mass shooting or a bank robbery in progress. There were some bank robberies, but by the time I got there, the bad guys had flown the coop, and the danger was over. I did help catch a bank robber once. I just happened to be in his path of flight from the bank. The idiot used an air-powered nail gun to rob the bank, but he didn’t have it hooked up to an air hose!

There were times, especially on the night shift, when we discovered, or were dispatched to crimes in progress. Domestic disturbances, bar fights, neighborhood disputes, business burglar alarms, and prowlers were the common, every-night “routines.”

To maintain our Florida Police Standards Certificate, we were required to attend a minimum amount of training each year. Most of those “refresher” classes were more administrative than street-level training.

But, there were some really good training classes, such as one series entitled, “Street Survival” and “Surviving Edged Weapons.”

Another class was “Use of Non-Lethal Weapons,” and included training in the use of Tasers and Cap-Stun which is a professional grade pepper spray. Then, of course, there was the required qualifying with the pistol and shotgun, twice a year. If you were assigned to a specialized unit such as the “Special Response Unit” or the “Dive Team,” there was specific training for those officers.

We learned, as Deputy Sheriffs, there was never really a “routine call” to which we would respond exactly in the same way every time. Oh sure, there

there was no book training. When I was an FTO, Field Training Officer, the rookies were required to ride with me or another FTO for a total of fourteen weeks. During that time, the rookie would be exposed to all kinds of calls.

But, the rookie and I might never get a call to respond to a bank robbery in progress. I instructed the rookie to try to imagine all kinds of dangerous situations, and plan for how he or she would handle them, then discuss those plans with a training officer.

It’s the same for the concealed carry citizen. If you are going to carry, you really do need to attend a firearms training class. I don’t know how often I have heard both men and women say, “Oh, I know how to shoot a gun.” BA-

LONEY! There is a lot more to shooting, and especially gun safety, than pointing the gun and pulling the trigger.

If you are going to be a responsible concealed carry citizen, please get trained in concealed carry, gun safety and home defense tactics.

I’ll bet you could not find a successful doctor, lawyer, engineer, or almost any professional who never attends advanced training seminars. If you are going to be a responsible citizen who practices their 2nd amendment rights, get concealed carry training. Get trained and get refresher training on gun safety. After being trained, practice shooting drills using “dry fire.” If you don’t know what shooting drills are, find out from a certified firearms instructor, and do

your homework!
