“Bittersweet” is the only word I can think of to describe the passing of former Athens Mayor Dan Williams, who was also currently serving us in the Alabama State House of Representatives. He fought a brutal and brave war against cancer, and on the morning of July 1, 2015, he slipped away.

He is suffering no more, and eternity has begun for him. Much has already been said about his public and military service, his life as a family man, his ability to tell a yarn, and to strum a guitar. I have heard tales of campfires that were legendary for their laughter.

There are many in the area who knew him their whole lives, and while I understand the sharp grief of a small town which has lost one of its longstanding public servants, I would like to talk about Dan from the perspective of only having been in Alabama since the year 2000.

When we first moved here, and websites were still relatively new, as the Mayor he would post the most endearing and comfortable details of life here. He’d talk about the kids and grandkids, BBQ, sitting on the front porch in the summertime, and he made me feel at home, even though at that point I had never met him.

I got to know him mostly from Coffee Calls at the Vets’ Museum, and then

he hired me to write some articles for him when he decided to run for the District 5 seat.

It was there that I got a deeper glimpse of his heart, and there are two stories about choices that he had made that I will never forget. I would like to share them with you.

One was when he stood up on the House floor in Montgomery, and confronted what I have come to call reverse racism. One of his grandchildren is adopted, and is African American.

Representative Alvin Holmes of Montgomery made the inflammatory statement that “99 percent of the whites who are sitting in here now, if their daughter got pregnant by a black man, they are going to make their daughter have an abortion.” Dan stood up and challenged him by saying, “I have a black grandchild running around my house, and I love him just like I love the rest of my grandkids.” I would have loved to have been there for that, and am proud both that he supported his son and daughter-in-law in their decision to adopt the child, and standing up for the truth that all kids are worth loving.

He was no stranger to controversy while serving in the House. He voted for Carly’s Law, the bill that would allow for the medical use of an oil form of

marijuana to help reduce seizures experienced by children with a rare form of epilepsy. He was not for the bill at first, but it was spending 20 minutes face to face with a mother whose child suffered from up to 300 seizures per month that changed his mind.

“Ali,” he said, “It shook me up. I can’t imagine going through that with one of my children or grandchildren.” Dan, we are shook up, because life in Athens just won’t be right

without you. But, we are people of faith, and we have the deep hope that we will see you again.

If there are campfires in heaven, then I have just one request: save me a seat next to you on the log while you strum your guitar.

Army Refuses To Provide Color Guard For Historic Patriotic Service

Once upon a time, in the State of Georgia, there was a Baptist Church that was founded before the United States of America. It was the year 1774, and the founding pastor of Abilene Baptist Church was arrested for “preaching in Georgia.” The next pastor, a man by the name of Reverend Loveless Savage, was a chaplain in the Revolutionary Army.

Abilene Baptist Church has had a long relationship with the Army, and Ft. Gordon is not far from it.

For the past 20 years, there has been a patriotic service held on the Sunday that falls the closest

soldiers. The church is stunned. “It was an absolute shock,” said Brad Whitt, the current pastor of Abilene Baptist Church. “What a sad commentary on the state of affairs in America – when we cannot even allow the flags to fly if they are in a church building.”

“We’ve had a tremendous working relationship with the fort,” said Pastor Whitt. “We’ve hosted all sorts of events for military families. We really try to show our love and respect and we try to honor our military folks.”

“That’s what makes this so sad,” Pastor Whitt added. “This is what we’ve come to in our nation – where even just representing the colors is some sort of political thing.”

I think of the fact that just two years ago I got a chance to worship with General Jerry Boykin of Blackhawk Down fame at a similar 4th of July service in a Baptist church here in Alabama.

Are we next? Could it get to the point that even someone who is no longer wearing a uniform could be stopped from preaching because once upon a time he wore a uniform? I realize that sounds far-fetched, but honestly, almost nothing shocks me anymore.

We said the Pledge of Allegiance at the beginning of the church service. I wonder if the so-called “separation of church and state” will ever get to the point that it will become illegal to say the Pledge inside of a church building?

We are turning away from God so quickly it is dizzying, and if the Army decides it can’t include God, there is no point celebrating the 4th of July at all, inside a church, or out in the park, because we’ll be done.

Foreman Fire Arms Safety Training: Field Experience And Common Sense

by Ali Elizabeth Turner I mean, things to look for, ways to assess situations, increasing situational awareness, and how to apply common sense in all types of scenarios. Paul took me through my paces, I am glad to say that he has my heartiest recommendation as a trainer!

I first met retired Lee County, FL, Sheriff’s Department Field Training Officer, Paul Foreman, at a book signing held at Athens State University’s Center for Lifelong Learning. He had written Bloodstains In Paradise, a compilation of “true crime stories that won’t make your pastor go over in a dead faint,” and we “talked shop” as fellow authors. (I love his book, by the way, and it has now been read in such faraway places as South Africa!)

Nevertheless, I had to ask him my standard question: “I have choices, why should I come to you?” He told me that his goal with every student was to get them so familiar with their weapon that it would be “like a tool.” He went on to say that “folks know how to use their umbrella, and take it when there is going to be rain. You don’t want to have to use it, but it will protect you if you need

He and his wife JoAnn truly felt called to Athens, and moved here when Paul retired from a 21 year law enforcement career in Florida. “I was so amazed by how friendly everyone here in Athens,” he told me, and this was something he wasn’t used to, either in his profession, or as a Floridian. He still wanted to work part time, and pursue his writing career. He sold guns at Gander Mountain, worked for some national security firms, and then knew it was time to strike out on his own as a private firearms and personal safety trainer.

Paul is no stranger to the perils of law enforcement. He has been the first to arrive at a homicide scene and has put the cuffs on a murderer.

However, his very favorite job was to train rookies. He was known as a Field Training Officer, meaning he would train the rookies who rode with him as his partner for seven weeks. Paul also worked in the Juvenile Unit where he would teach classes to kids who had gotten in trouble.

Once he decided to provide private firearms classes, he went through the extensive

16 hour training course required by the National Rifle Association, held up in Nashville. He is also certified to teach AED, CPR and first Aid with the American Heart Association, (in case your heart needs to be shocked back into service).

I agreed to be his guinea pig as a would-be firearms training student. I have been blessed to have had some great training in days gone by, but when the “ammo crunch” hit about

three years ago, I quit shooting for awhile. In a word, I was rusty and knew it, and wanted to get back on my game. So, we decided to treat me as a first time shooter. We met out at the Limestone Hunting Preserve on a sweltering Friday morning, and Preserve owner Wayne Mitchell is one of Paul’s greatest encouragers.

Wayne is thrilled to be able to have his facility used for such important training.

Every shooting instructor has different “tricks,” and by that

it.” The basic course is going to be designed for people who are new to shooting, and the class size will be small. He prefers 4-5 in each class, and will go up to six. Being able to give individual attention is the key to successful (and safe) training.

He also talked about “imparting the right mind set.” Being a responsible gun owner and operator is about far more than just being able to “cluster your shots in center mass” on a target. For example, his classes include the use of plas-

tic “dummy shells,” which cause the gun to jam and not be able to fire. He teaches you what to do immediately in that situation.

He taught me a new way of “racking” my Glock; that is, pulling back the slide quickly in order to prepare to fire. He was also very patient and approachable, something that is crucial in a firearms training situation. “I care that the student is fully trained,” he said, and he also is willing to go to a gun store with a student in order to assist them in selecting a handgun for purchase.

In addition to firearm safety, he is going to be teaching a NRA class entitled, “Refuse To Be A Victim.” This class encourages participants to create a safety plan and gives instruction on how to make themselves more difficult targets in order to avoid criminal confrontation. His training will not be the least expensive, but it will be worth the price. So, if you are interested in getting started, or upgrading your personal safety skills, Paul Foreman is your guy.

Community Garden Benefits From Truancy Intervention Program

by Lynne Hart It has been two years since the Community Garden grant was received from Lowe’s through Keep America Beautiful. The gardens were created in an effort to grow fresh produce for Limestone County Churches Involved to give out through their food pantry.

Three raised beds were built, hugelkultur beds were created, the gazebo and garden shed were constructed, trees planted, and t-posts installed in preparation for planting pole beans.

The raised beds and hugelkultur beds have been weeded, the soil prepared, and vegetables planted.

So now we just sit and wait to harvest vegetables, right? We wish it could be that simple! There is mulching and watering and weeding to be done! We also have a gazebo waiting to be stained.

With the help of students and parents participating in the Truancy Intervention Program (TIP) designed to combat school tardiness, absenteeism and drop-out rates, we are well on our way to getting these tasks handled.

Grilled Marinated Asparagus

Summer is here, and it is too hot to cook in the kitchen. So, move outside to the grill instead. With all the abundance of fresh produce, now is the time to put your grill to good use. Everything from meats, fish, poultry, vegetables, fruits…well you get the picture…can be cooked on the grill.

This is a favorite of mine that is fast, easy, and healthy. The asparagus

can also be substituted with fresh green beans. The natural sugars will caramelize somewhat, making this dish like eating candy; you just can’t stop!

Exercise Mistakes That Could Hurt You

workouts of a similar nature to rest and recover. Without the recovery time, you could have soreness, fatigue and decreased performance.

When this lasts too long, it could result in overtraining syndrome, which has longterm effects such as hormonal imbalances, sleep disturbances, mood disorders, etc.

Exercise provides tremendous benefits for health and wellbeing. However, incorrect form or using equipment and tools incorrectly may diminish results, or even cause injury. Below are some suggestions for insuring you get the most out of your exercise routine.

•Don’t skip your warm-up or cool-down because you are short on time. Without a warm-up your body is not prepared for your workout so you may underperform and create a greater chance for injury. By cutting short your cool-down, you create more soreness by not allowing your body to cool down properly. As a result, you may still be sore and not ready for your next workout.

Instead of skipping the warm-up and cool-down, shorten your workout and increase the intensity. You can get an excellent workout (both strength and cardio) in only 20 to 30 minutes. Add

moderate-to-intense intervals (HIIT) and/or decrease your rest time between sets.

Make sure you find a way to do five to 10 minutes of mobility (dynamic stretching) work prior to your workout and some static stretching after you’re done.

•Don’t use unfamiliar equipment incorrectly or trying a new exercise tool that you have watched others use but have never tried yourself. Make sure

you know how to use the equipment or tools before adding them to your exercise program. This goes for everything from elliptical machines to dumbbells, a TRX Suspension Trainer to kettlebells, a BOSU to gliders. First, if you have never used a piece of equipment, do not assume those that you have watched are using it correctly.

When you are able to complete your planned workout or class workout using correct form and no longer have muscle soreness after your workouts, you may be ready to increase your weight or move to the next resistance level. More weight and higher resistance have little value and can definitely result in an injury when using incorrect form.

If you are at a gym, ask one of the trainers to show you how to use the equipment. If you are in a class, make sure the instructor gives instructions you understand and ask questions after class if you are unsure. If you work out alone, consider using a personal trainer at least once for added help. I see this all the time. Someone watched a video or read a workout in a magazine. New moves or new equipment have little value and can often be unsafe when done incorrectly!

•Don’t cut short your time to recover properly. You need 24 to 48 hours between

The resistance rule of thumb is the 2x2 rule. If you can do two more reps for two sessions at your regular weight, then it is time to move up by two reps or 2 percent in weight. For endurance training, your overall weekly distance or time should not be increased by more than 10% each week. So if you are preparing for a competition, give yourself plenty of time to prepare. You cannot prepare to run a marathon in only a couple of weeks.

Drucilla’s: Southern Hospitality And Victorian Charm

in heaven. Drucilla’s is located in a wonderful house at 300 North Marion, in the historical section of Athens.

It was built in 1901, was the Manse (or parsonage) of the Presbyterian Church, and is named in honor of a beloved elementary school teacher, Olna Drucilla Bullington. She taught at several schools throughout Limestone County including Piney Chapel and Ardmore, and was the grandmother of Drucilla’s owner, Carol Holland. Mrs. Bullington was a great cook, and taught Carol both to love cooking and do it well. Carol is a native of Athens, graduated from Athens High, and got her engineering degree from UAH. She spent her career working for Department of Defense contractors as a Systems engineer.

In the summer of 2014, she decided to pursue her lifelong dream of owning her own restaurant. Carol had always loved the house and happily purchased it when it became available. It is a beautiful building, complete with leaded glass windows, fireplaces, antiques, and high ceilings.

It now sports an outside eating area (front lawn and back patio), park benches, flowers, and a charming, custom-designed sign.

Carol loves the idea of “eclectic” in both the décor and the menu. Some of her menu choices came from places she had visited on vacation, some from family recipes, and some are just classic Southern, and she uses the term “Southern

salads such as traditional chicken, the chicken Waldorf (apples, grapes, pecans), broccoli, Hawaiian, corn, cucumber, etc. in mix and match combinations.

Homemade desserts are always available. Favorites include strawberry cake, coconut cake, Mississippi eclectic” to describe it all.

Drucilla’s has daily specials, which include homemade cornbread and biscuits or yeast rolls. The price is $8.95, and Carol has tried to price the items on the menu so two people can have a very nice lunch for around $20. One of the things I appreciate about her is her desire to honor our senior citizens, veterans, active duty service men and women, law enforcement mud cake, peanut butter pie, caramel pie and strawberry pretzel salad.

Strawberry pretzel salad, peanut butter pie, and caramel pie are offered daily. As much as possible, Carol purchases produce and supplies locally in order to support our county economy.

The herb garden has basil, lavender, rosemary, thyme, spearmint and peppermint, sage, chives and oregano.

The garden itself is a feast for the eyes.

People have come from all over the area to experience the high tea. The specially blended teas are also for sale to take home.

The Butcher Shopp In Pulaski: Completely Worth The Drive

Bridges, who is the owner of Cindy Lou’s Deli in Elkmont. She gets all of her meat from him, and now that I have been there, I have been thoroughly reminded of just what a blessing a genuine butcher shop is.

The Butcher Shopp is located in an obscure part of Pulaski, TN, and yes, that is the spelling that Arlen uses just for grins. He offered me birthday cake, took me on a tour of the place, and gave me an education on cuts of meat I didn’t even know I needed.

The Shopp is located in a renovated Quonset hut at 170 9th Street, and the store is busy all day long. Over the door are old album covers from the Monkees, the Beach Boys, Donnie and Marie Osmond, the Partridge Family and other iconic groups from the ‘60s, and there is a “wall of remembrance” for all the members of the cast of the Andy Griffith show. Contrast that with a plethora of Amish vegetables and produce, shelves of homemade “table syrup” and BBQ sauce, catfish caught in KY Lakes, meat hooks with curing hams hanging on them, pink jumbo shrimp from Key West, FL, as well as freshly processed beef soup bones, and you are starting to get an idea of why this place is so popular.

It is, on every front, a “blast from the past.”

There are signs that could be fun for bumper stickers: “Eat Beef-The West Wasn’t Won On Salad,” or “Stop And Smell The Sizzle.” The Shopp carries everything you could need for a picnic or a cookout, from the briquettes to the beef to the beverages, but at the end of the day, these guys are the best at answering any and all forms of the question, “Where’s the beef?” Cindy told me the rib eyes are “mwah,” they have a customer who comes in every Friday to order a custom cut 4 inch steak for his wife, and Arlen told me they try to be the “Cheers” of butcher shops—“where everybody knows your name,” and your cut of meat, too. Steaks, chicken, pork, all of it can be cut to order, or you can go to the refrigerator case and pick from

that selection if you are in a hurry.

They carry organic and free-range products in a designated case, although they are not the ones who have processed it.

He told me about buying sides of beef.

“You have to be careful,” he said, “because you can lose up to 50% of it in waste. We don’t have any waste in our packages.” They also provide free ice for the customer around which to pack their meat so that it is still fresh when they get home.

“We make sausage here, too,” he said, and added, “We’ll make sausage for diabetics that just have sage and black pepper, and we have sodium free bacon.” They have a large Cabela’s brand dehydrator in the back, and make their own jerky. They carry a “six pack” of various cuts of meat for $19.99, and that is all day, every day.

Not all of Arlen’s clients can afford a custom cut 4-inch steak, however, and he prepares packages of various meats for those who are on a tight budget.

He has a standing order for a single mom that will get her family through the month for around a hundred bucks.

Fancy? No. Well-fed kids? Yes. This man and his family love their clients and their community, and it shows.

“We are a family run business,” Arlen proudly told me. His older sister, Wanda, was dusting the shelves and “facing” the stock. She told me it was Arlen’s

b i r t h d a y, regaled me with stories of when they were kids, and then she winked, making me feel like I had just been invited into the family. Connie is his wife, and keeps the place humming, and the kids are Brian, Dawson, and Mary.

The kids are hard workers and when I visited, Dawson was on a mission trip to a reservation in Montana. They are

not afraid to let their light shine, and are clearly in the serving business in Pulaski, and beyond.

If you “hunger” for the customer service and great prices of an old fashioned butcher shop, you owe it to yourself to put 170 9th Street, Pulaski TN into your GPS, and make the drive.

Dogs, Cornbread, Football, And Real BBQ

If you want to spark an argument in Limestone County, just cuss a man’s dog, say his Mama can’t cook good cornbread, or slander the Alabama Crimson Tide. But the worst insult of all is to tell him that sliced pork roast with tomato sauce poured on top is BBQ. The fight will be on. I know about these things.

At one time we owned 17 foxhounds, two bird dogs and a yard dog. Daddy housed the hounds inside a hog wire fence that resembled a Japanese labor camp. They were fed large pones of crusty cornbread that Mama cooked in a black iron skillet. They loved Mama’s cornbread and so did I. It made us smart and happy. Sometimes we ate cornbread and gravy for breakfast.

I’d eaten so much gritty cornbread by age 12 that my teeth were smoother than the mouth of a 20year old mule.

As for football, when I was attending law school at Alabama in the mid 1960’s, Coach Bear Bryant and I use to enjoy coffee at Druid Drug on the edge of campus. We didn’t sit together, but we were in the same building at the same time. Most afternoons, he’d appear around 3 p.m. and walk past several of us law students on his way to a booth.

“Afternoon Coach,” we chimed in unison. He grunted and kept walking. I don’t think he liked incubating lawyers. He’d smoke cigarettes, sip cof-

fee and stare into space, no doubt hatching up a winning play for Saturday’s game. Or, perhaps he was thinking about a good looking co-ed he had seen on campus. I don’t know.

He never confided in me about that.

I also learned a lot about football from my second wife, “Arkansas Pat.” Pat hated Bama, loved Auburn and idolized Bo Jackson. Her brain was chock-full of football trivia. She could recount plays from years back. On Friday night before Auburn played on Saturday, she always got diarrhea.

After Auburn, she loved the Arkansas Razorbacks.

I had to learn to “Call the Hogs.” How demeaning to a Crimson Tide fan who use to have coffee with the Bear. Mental anguish it was. I was going to use it as evidence in our divorce trial. (“Boo-hoohoo, Judge she made me feel less than a real man.

Please don’t make me pay alimony.”) The Judge was female, an Auburn fan, and had been voted “Worst Judge” by the Bar. I pulled out my checkbook.

I first heard about Barbecue on July 4th when I was about 5 years old. Cousin Wallar Thomas on Nick Davis Road barbecued several shoats and sold the meat to neighbors. Mama helped pull pork and was compensated with a dish pan of barbecue seasoned with vinegar sauce. It sure was good. “Cudn’ Wallar cooks the best barbecue in the world,” declared Daddy. That was technically

correct since our world stretched only 8 miles from Capshaw to Athens.

In the mid-1950’s, Mr. Isaac Thomas converted a chicken house on Nick Davis Road to H & H BBQ. You couldn’t get a seat there on Saturday nights and Sunday after church. After selling to Jimmy and Ann Holmes, he and former Sheriff, Clyde Ennis opened Hickory House on Highway 72 East, (now 306 BBQ).

Clyde’s hushpuppies were so delicious that he came to see me about obtaining legal protection of his secret recipe.

Limestone County’s reputation for great BBQ was further enhanced when brick layer, Floyd Whitt constructed a pit in his backyard on Elkton Road in the 1960’s giving birth to famous Whitt’s BBQ. Early 1970’s, Coleman BBQ, Memphis, came to Athens and obtained a 5-year lease from my client, Wayne Jennings.

They sold sliced pork roast drenched with tomato sauce. “This is the barbecue capitol of the South,” I said to Wayne. “Folks won’t eat it.” Wayne agreed. “That’s what I told ‘em. They claim to know more about barbecue than anyone in the business.”

opened in Athens. Hickory Barn and 306 Barbecue are newcomers, but receiving high praise. Whitt’s doesn’t enter into cooking contests, cater or advertise much. They don’t have to.

In 1985, Mr. Whitt was in my office, and after finishing our business, I asked him the secret of cooking the best BBQ around. He looked to be sure the door was closed.

“You’re my lawyer and what I tell you is confidential, isn’t it?” he asked me. “Yes sir, it will go to the grave with me,” I said.

“When I was in Italy during World War II, I walked behind a house where an old Italian man was cooking barbecue. He taught me the secret of pulling the smoke under the meat, just right,” he said. “Well, I’ll be doggone. So that’s how it’s done,” I said.

Later, I told his daughter, Bonnie I knew the secret and related what her father had said to me. She laughed. “Daddy has a different tale for everyone.”

Whitt’s opened on Labor Day, 1966. I’m told that Athens school teacher, Guy McCune, Sr. was the first customer. Back then, folks helped one another.

King of Limestone County, and his wife came and helped the Whitts make slaw and pull pork.

Mr. Whitt gave me wind chimes that he made from galvanized pipe. They hang in my carport and when I hear the sweet music, I think of Mr. Whitt and good hickory smoked barbecue.

Following the replacement of my heart valve with a pig valve in 2013, I stopped eating pork BBQ. It’s a matter of respect.

I stand in solidarity with my porker brothers. Power to the pigs, I say. But I love turkey barbecue.

Who cooks the best BBQ in Limestone County?

Folks will argue about that. It’s like choosing between a beautiful blonde, brunette or red head - all mighty fine, but a little different. My test is this: If it tastes good, it is good. But that doesn’t include sliced pork roast drowned in tomato sauce.

That ain’t barbecue!

There are four good reasons to save the Earth: it’s the only place in the universe where you can find a good dog, eat delicious cornbread, and watch the Alabama Crimson Tide while eating real BBQ.

Dog Barker

Road Kill? Really?

My dad shared a story with me years ago. He used to have an Oldsmobile station wagon. One night as he was driving to work on Snake Road, he noticed this black shape that he thought was a cat. Well, as his car came closer the perceived cat had a white stripe down its back and was raising its tail in the direction of the car.

Dad knew immediately he was in trouble and he told me as that stream of stink shot toward his car he some how got the car to swerve and it missed.

He said he was just a sniffing the air in his car because he just knew he got the car sprayed.

Can anyone imagine the sound of tires screeching and the silly look on my dad’s face as he was sniffing the air?

Just the other day I was

driving on Thompson Road and, as always when I see a critter regardless if it is a dog, cat, deer, possum, or skunk (on that critter, I will almost wreck my car to get away from the raised tail and spray) I will beep my horn. Well, except for the skunk, as I prefer to get by them as quickly as possible.

This is just my way of letting the critter know I am there and to alert someone (if it is an escaped dog or cat) that they need to look outside their house and put them up. Anyway, I was on Thompson Road and these two Blue Heelers come into the road and I beep my horn to let them know I was coming, because I don’t want them to get hurt. I hope whoever reads this and knows the dogs will

say something to the pet parents because they are responsible if their dogs cause anyone to wreck or something happens to their “babies.”

Does anyone reading this live near a road and allow their dog to run loose? If so, they should realize that the responsibility of someone having an accident because of their dogs can be blamed on the owners, not the dogs. Same goes for dogs chasing cars. It is not an accident if the dog chasing the cars is known to do so by the owner. I see this everyday while driving around Limestone County.

What is sad is when someone hits the dog or cat, and most don’t even bother to stop. I find that disrespectful. Yes, the pet parent might be-

come angry, but the best thing to do is to remain calm.

Tempers tend to flare and cause the situation to get people into trouble. If the driver of the vehicle that hit the dog or cat was speeding, then it is just as much as their fault as it is for the pet parent who should have protected their “baby” better. Remember this, drivers: a human child can be run over just as quickly as a dog or cat.

So, think before speeding down a road with houses on both sides.

One last thing before I close. I just purchased Zues, who is a Great Dane, a seatbelt, and it works very well. He gives me the look that says “Really? You want me to wear this?” But, it keeps him safe and al-

lows him free movement around the car. I bought it on Amazon, and it is called the “Solvit” seatbelt for dogs. So, drivers, that is one more thing I would suggest investing in for those canine family members.

It works and keeps everyone from having their huge “baby” land on them in an accident.

“Remember to love your dogs because they love you. Maybe not the way you want them to, like chewing up your favorite shoes or what not, but that is just love chewing. Be thankful for the time you have with them always.”

4-3-2-1 Leadership -Trust And Transparency

by Ali Elizabeth Turner George MacDonald made the following statement: “To be trusted is a greater compliment than being loved.” Mayor Ronnie looked at me and said, “Do you think that’s true?”

I thought for a moment and replied, “Yes. There are people that I genuinely love, but I don’t trust them at all.” He nodded. I thought further and concluded that what I would like the most is to be trusted, even if I am not very popular. He agreed. MacDonald’s statement is the introduction to the chapter in Gen Vinnie Boles’ book, 4-3-2-1 Leadership entitled, “Trust: The Most Critical Component.”

We talked about the fact that our whole culture is facing a crisis of faith, and not just spiritually or religiously speaking. There is a leadership vacuum, people are “daddy hungry,” and the promises of “transparency” are fodder for late night comedy routines.

Natural Alternatives For Management of Chronic Pain

by Rachel Clark, RN, BSN According to data from the American Academy of Pain Medicine, over 100 million Americans and 1.5 billion people worldwide struggle with chronic pain. Chronic pain is defined as pain that persists over weeks, months, or even years, while acute pain is a trigger of the body to alert you to injury, and the need to take care of yourself (www.pain.org). There may be an initial injury that causes acute pain and turns into chronic, or there may not. The most common sites for chronic pain include back, headaches/migraines, and the neck, but can occur anywhere in the body.

Over the last several years, pain management has been a huge focus in the healthcare world. It is so much so that we have begun to deem pain as the “fifth vital sign” in addition to blood pressure, heart rate, respiratory rate/oxygen saturation, and temperature.

If you have been treated in a hospital or doctor’s office recently, you have likely heard them ask about your pain level on a 0-10 scale with 0 being no pain, and 10 being the worst pain imaginable.

There are many ways available to treat both acute and chronic pain, including over the counter medications, prescription drugs, and alternative pain management solutions. Always discuss your pain management goals with your healthcare provider, and come up with a plan that you can both agree on together for you. Below you will find some alternative therapies to research to see if they might fit your unique situation.

You may also consider purchasing a device that can track how well you are sleeping (unless you have a pacemaker, defibrillator, or implanted neurostimulator).

4. Technology. New technology is emerging every day in every arena, and healthcare is no exception. There are biofeedback machines, transcutaneous nerve stimulators (TENS units) and electromyography units. Before use, talk to your healthcare provider and do not use if you have the implanted devices mentioned above.

Some ways to combat this include prayer, meditation, breathing exercises, tai chi, guided imagery, and meditation.
