If I’ve Done This Once, I’ve Done This A Hundred Times Actually, more than a hundred times; 102, to be exact. What am talking about? This June 5th, 2015 edition of Athens Now marks the 102nd time I have “put the paper to bed.” How did I get here? Well, you can blame everyone from God, to my husband Steve, to that rascal, Jerry Barksdale, (whose latest yarn appears on page 19), to Wayne and Deborah Huff; but I ain’t complainin’, in fact, I am celebrating!

While I never, ever had any notion of being an author, a writer, and good heavens, a newspaper publisher, I intend, in the body of this op-ed, to convince you that you should “never say never.”

I always liked English, and it came easy for me, but writing was mostly something one did for assignments. I wrote some poetry, privately, and columns for homeschool and ministry newsletters. I also composed a fair number of songs, some of which got published, but writing was a means to an end, and not a mission.

Then, I had the adventure of a lifetime, and spent 2004-2007 in Baghdad. A Juice Plus client of mine, who is a real-live, highly trained professional writer and

editor, encouraged me to send home an e-zine from the Great Sandbox, which I did. She also put me in touch with Morgan James Publishing Company out of New York, and miracle of miracles, they published my first attempt at serious writing, A Ballad For Baghdad: An ExHippie Chick Viet Nam War Protestor’s Three Years In Iraq.

I got home from Iraq in 2007, and with the help of my previously mentioned, “highly trained” editor friend, Mary Jo Tate, Ballad was published in November of 2008. I took about a year and a half to market the book, and then, it and I kind of stalled out.

In February of 2010, I met Jerry Barksdale at the Alabama Veterans’ Museum, and that was all she wrote. At the time, Athens Now was owned by the people who started it, Wayne and Deborah Huff, and to this day Deborah is one hard working one woman sales force. Jerry mentioned me to the Huffs, who hired me to write for them, beginning that same month.

One year later, they decided to go a different direction, and after prayer, consideration and consternation, we decided to buy the pa-

per. My life has never been the same.

At first I faced every publication cycle, (affectionately known as Pub Week, where one might be tempted to live in one, a pub, that is), with a knot in my stomach, and wondering if I was going to toss my cookies. All nighters were the order of the day. I had no idea what I was doing, and the lingo, the biz, the invoicing, the collecting, the not being able to collect, all of it threatened to swamp me. Like all good life lessons, it was sink or swim, and by God’s grace, I began to swim, (or at least, dog paddle somewhat lamely).

I inherited a dear set of columnists, and found some of my own. My production guy, Jonathan Hamilton, should be sainted for what he has endured with me, and has become a dear friend. Hunter Williams has helped with delivery, Rachel Clark with editing, Teddy Wolcott with the online edition.

We laugh hard, every edition, and also sometimes we want to tear our hair out. We always wonder how it is going to come together, but somehow, it does.

Now Athens Now is being read in 5 towns, 3

counties and in over 120 locations. Its hard copy circulation is 4,000, and in an era when newspapers are being seen as dinosaurs, we are not dying out. Due to the miracle of technology, we now also being read in my beloved Iraq and Israel, in China, Uzbekistan, and elsewhere. We have over 1,000 Google index pages, domestically we get more than 100,000 hits on the online edition and no one is more surprised than I am.

However, it is you, oh dearest of readers, that have made me forever glad that I said yes to what is at times an extraordinarily high level of discomfort. You have emailed me, come up to me on the street, thanked me for what I am doing, and cheered me on.

Your stories have warmed my heart, and it has been my pleasure to tell them. Thank you forever for making it possible to say with joy and at least a touch of confidence, “If I’ve done this once, I’ve done it a hundred times.”

Saying Goodbye To Theo And Billy

The Athens Veterans’ community has had to say goodbye to two of its most storied members, Theo Calvin and Billy Duncan.

They passed within just a few weeks of each other, and both men embodied everything that makes American soldiers so legendary.

Theo was 92 when he passed, and served in France under General George Patton. He had to wait until he was 89, when, due to the hard work of Alabama Veterans’ Museum Director, Sandy Thompson, and others, he was surprised to finally receive the following medals: •The Bronze Star, the 4thhighest award that can be awarded •Combat Infantry Badgegiven to enlisted soldiers or officers below the rank of colonel who personally fought in any ground war after December, 1941

•WWII Victory Medalgiven to those who fought from Pearl Harbor until December 31, 1946 •Army of Occupation Medal with German claspfor those who served during the Occupation of Germany after WWII

Theo Calvin •Belgium Fourragere-Created by Prince Charles, Regent of the Kingdom of Belgium originally for those who were in the Belgium Army, but was also given at times to members of the US Army

He was chosen as the 2011 Grand Marshall for the Athens Veterans’ Day Parade, and was completely surprised when he was taken to the Limestone County Event Center for the pinning ceremony, conducted by Lt. Gen Richard Formica, and Mr. Denis Barbet, Consul General of France. Theo said he felt like a movie star that day. I would see him at Coffee Call every month, and then, just like that, one more of my father’s generation, aptly called The Greatest Generation, passed. How glad I am that at the end of his life he was given the honor he deserved. I hope the wait made it sweeter.

Command Sgt Major Billy Duncan was by anyone’s definition a warrior’s warrior. He enlisted just one day shy of his 17th birthday during the Korean War, served three tours in Vietnam, and became

His career was the stuff of legends. He made thousands of jumps as a paratrooper, and essentially put the “Air” in “Airborne.”

Cindy Lou’s Deli: “It’s All About The Flavor And The Love”

Cindy Bridges, of Cindy Lou’s Deli has been baking or cooking for family and friends, as well as professionally, since she was so little that she had to push a chair up to the counter in order to be able to reach it. She started out by baking chocolate chip cookies, and by the time she was 10, she was winning 4-H ribbons at the State fair. At the age of 13, her mom went back to work, and it happily fell upon Cindy to have the family dinner ready every night when everyone walked in the door. She was doing what she truly loved, and, “Besides,” (she said with a twinkle in her eye), “that way I didn’t have to do the dishes!” However, it wasn’t until her late 40s that she realized that cooking, (es-

ing to be peaceful and calming, something that not everyone experiences! She began to buy copies of Bon Appetit in order to see if she could successfully prepare more complicated dishes, and found she could. She quit being intimidated, and with new found confidence, took a cooking class.

Cindy laughed as she said, “That unleashed the monster.” While largely self taught, she went on to hone her culinary skills in a number of ways at several outlets. She was the prep chef at Luciano’s when it opened in 2008. The most fun she ever

opened up in Elkmont, and is housed in a charming little bright blue and white building that used to be an ice cream shop. It sports a window box of popping red geraniums, has

appreciation event in two days, and wanted Cindy to bake some “tasties” from scratch.

She chose to make what she calls apple pie bites, which are the cinnamon/apple equivalent of pigs in a blanket. They were a big hit, were consumed quickly, and next time the bank will probably double their order.

Cindy’s cooking philosophy is that the food she prepares has to have “flavor and love.”

She told me, “Anyone can cook a frozen hamburger patty.” However, she goes to the trouble to get her meat custom cut from the butcher, and it’s never frozen.

Her chicken is local, and she gets her produce from as close by as possible. The ice tea is home brewed, the sauces and

desserts made from scratch, and the burgers are like what you would make for a cook out if you had the time. The mushroom and Swiss burger is a big hit, as is the Reuben. I have also had the Nathan’s all beef dog and sauerkraut, and for me, it hit the spot completely.

As mentioned above, the desserts are really taking off. Valerie’s favorite is the chocolate fudge pie, which of course can be made all year long. The fruit pies are made from fresh, locally grown fruit, and the strawberry pie and blueberry torte often sell out. Taking advantage of the seasons and growing cycles of fruit is one of the things Cindy thinks makes them the best, and she is not interested in getting fruit from out of the area or out of season.

As we go to print, Cindy is planning on having their Grand Opening in conjunction with the Smokin’ Railroad Street BBQ Cookoff event in Elkmont on June 19th. I asked her what she was planning on serving in addition to the regular menu, and all she would tell me, (with a dear half smile), was, “specially prepared items.” Come see what Cindy and Valerie are up to at Cindy Lou’s Deli, open Wednesday through Sunday.

Summertime Fun

June begins the joy of backyard grilling, heading out to the pool and lake, and lots of lawn care. The grilled food always tastes better, the pool is like a long lost friend coming back for an extended visit, and the yard, well unless you are growing some great veggies, I’ll leave it to my husband! We love being outside, no matter if it is to work or for fun, as long as we have a shady place to cool off with friends and a glass of sweet tea.

The Bird’s Nest: Repurposing With A Passion

by Ali Elizabeth Turner Ever since the age of 4, Ciera Carter has wanted to own her own shop and business. Back then she thought it would be a kids’ store, but in high school, she got bit by the “re-purposing bug.” She and her then- boyfriend-nowhusband Josh “started building stuff,” as she says. Josh knew how to weld, and that was when they officially began to “build the dream.” It’s now 20 years later from the time she first thought about being a business owner, and “the dream” is named “The Bird’s Nest.” It is a charming little shop located in Elkmont at 18820 Upper Fort Hampton Road, right across from Belle Chevre Creamery.

Ciera is 24, the mother of two little girls, Reese and Marley, and has had the chance to “layer in” another part of her dream. She is enjoying being a part of history and a wonderful legacy. You see, The Bird’s Nest is located in what was the first hospital in Limestone County, known as “Powers’ Hospital.” Her grandmother worked for Dr. A.D. Powers for many years, and Ciera, who grew up in the area, says she “always felt drawn to the building.” As we chatted, she said with contentment, “I just love this building.”

On the wall behind the checkout counter, there is a picture of the building “back in the day,” as well as a bit about the other docs who ran their practices from it: Drs. Joe Maples and Will Maples, Dr. C.V. Mayhall, and Dr. Joe Whitfield. She most definitely has good reason to feel at home in her “Nest.”

Ciera is going to make dried arrangements, some of which will be from items she has grown herself. Currently she has lavender flourishing in her garden at home, and will add cotton, millet, wheat and boxwood.

They will be displayed in all manner of re-purposed containers, and designed for year round or seasonal use.

In addition, once she gets The Bird’s Nest firmly established, she wants to open another shop in a farmhouse, fully decorate it in cream and neutral tones using the shabby chic motif, and continue her legacy of carefully and cleverly re-purposing items and buildings for the pleasure of the public.

Give Back AND Raise Funds!

The Adopt-A-Spot program is a great way for groups and individuals to serve the community while raising funds to do even more good through their own organization.

This program has been in existence for several years now with volunteers adopting spots for a period of one year or continuing on for several years.

Boy Scout Troop #24 adopted Lucas Ferry Rd. from Market St. to Hwy. 72 when the program first began in 2010 and has continued to take care of this area faithfully ever since. The troop leadership keeps track of which boys participate, then earmarks a prorated amount that those boys can use toward scouting activities.

We also have an individual who has adopted two areas. Since reward money must go to a local organization, Mr. Barry

After each 3rd cleanup (no more than once per quarter), a reward check is sent to the adopting organization or local charity of choice. These funds can then be used to further the good works of the receiving organization.

Phillips has designated the new library to receive funds from one adopted area, and KALB to receive the funds from the second area.

How It Works: KALB will supply safety vests, trash bags, and litter grabbers to any group or individual willing to clean a designated area once per month. After each cleanup, a simple online report must be completed so KALB can keep up with the group’s activities. It will also allow us to make

arrangements for filled trash bags and large items to be picked up. These volunteers also scan the area for properties that do

How to Get Involved If you are interested in getting involved in this program, the first step is to let KALB know.

We will then send you a packet of information which includes the guidelines of the program and the necessary paperwork to register a group or individual.

If, after reading through the materials, you decide to adopt an area, KALB staff will discuss with you those available for adoption.

Why is a Clean Community Important?

According to the U.S. Department of Justice, community cleanups show that the people who use an area care about its appearance.

When a neighborhood is clean, well lighted, and used often by residents, crime is less likely to occur. Eliminating trash, debris, and tall weeds from an area will help make a location less attractive to criminals and more attractive to the community, according to the USDJ. Clean communities also help attract new business to the area. We have been told many times what a positive impact clean roadsides and attractive green spaces have on those visiting our area to “check us out”.

What you will need: 1 box pistachio instant pudding 1 10oz. bag of (mini) marshmallows 1 ½ cans of crushed pineapple 1 16 oz. tub of Cool Whip- thawed 1 cup of chopped pecans (optional) Combine pineapple and pudding mix (do not drain pineapple). Mix together well. Fold in marshmallows, Cool Whip, and pecans. Place in glass container and let rest in the fridge for several hours before serving.

As a certified personal trainer, group fitness instructor, and health coach, I am frequently asked “What diet do you recommend?” or “What do you think about this diet?”

I usually talk about moderation and healthy eating with limiting the amount of calories if weight loss is the goal.

I always emphasize a food diary, whether electronic or by hand.

But really, the best diet for you is the plan that you can follow, is safe, and provides you with all your nutrients.

If calorie intake is too low, you need to work with a registered dietician or doctor. If you have a health concern such as diabetes, you need to choose a diet that is recommended by your physician.

over the years it has become legendary in the Tennessee Valley. The year was 1934, and it would be several years before Huntsville would become known as Rocket City. Farming was still the foundation of the local economy, the TVA had been formed the year before, and Senator John Bankhead passed legislation to help boost the price of cotton by limiting the amount a farmer would be allowed to bring to market. While it may have been a simpler time, like now, it was full of challenges.

C.T. Garvin’s has continued to prosper, grow, and change with the times, and has navigated the shift from a local population that is largely rural, to one that is somewhat more urban. And, in this

time of “riding out” another recession, they are pleased to announce the opening of a brand new store in Limestone County, located at 24984 Thach Road in Elkmont, right at the corner of Thach Rd and Mooresville Rd. Both stores are owned by Monica Clark, and

Joe’s World Famous Pizzeria Athens: Much More Than Just A Superb Slice

shop, Joe’s World Famous Pizzeria. It is located down a couple of doors from Nestle’s Toll House Cookies on 72 in Athens. I knew early on in the conversation that I was in the presence of the most passionate pizza guy I had ever met, and then I had the chance to taste his wares. I have had to become gluten free, so most of the time when I get pizza, I just have the toppings and forgo the crust. While that is indeed a bummer, I’ve learned to “adjust and enjoy.” However, I noticed that Joe had what might just be the ticket on his menu: pizza fries. I’ll try many things once, and he made me chicken pizza fries with marinara sauce. I was, as they say, smitten. The marinara is without question the best I have ever had, the portion generous, and the price, inarguably reasonable. He also has gluten free pasta, which is going to be on the docket for my next culinary adventure.

Joe Carlucci is a veritable legend in international “Pizza-dom.” There is an Olympic competition for pizza, and he has won multiple golds. He is a 3 time world pizza champion, and has won several other awards he doesn’t bother mentioning.

He is the Guinness Book of World Record holder for the highest pizza toss, (over two stories straight up,) and in 2010, Joe’s was voted The Best Pizza in America.

In 2012 he won the award in Naples, Italy, for being the World’s Fastest Pizza Maker. He also studied pizza making there in Italy.

His media exposure has been extensive. Besides being featured in newspapers here and abroad, he has been seen on CNN, ESPN, The Taste, the Food Network, Martha Stewart, and the Today Show. He says, with gratitude, “I’ve travelled all over the world on pizza.” He is also careful to mention with honor his mentor, Tony Gemignani, and calls him “the Babe Ruth of Pizza.”

He studied at Tony Gemignani International School of Pizza.

To help Joe with operations and systems, he brought in his former employee and now store manager, Tessa Hornsby. Joe said of Tessa, “At times I think I am working for her, but that’s a good thing. She keeps me organized and inline.

Joe was born in the Bronx, grew up in Carmel, NY, and never expected to end up in Alabama. And, like many of us that did not start out in the South, he loves it here.

He was hired in 2008 as a consultant for a new restaurant that was opening up, and he helped create menus as well as train the staff. He was there for two years, and then went in with partners to open a “Joe’s” on County Line Road. He decided to come to Athens and open a sole proprietorship shop, and has fallen in love with our town.

However, as impressive as the medals, the custom made 4,000 pound brick oven, the articles, the food, and all the rest truly are, there is something about Joe that won my heart, and that is his love for kids. He has a two year old named Valentina, and the best picture on his wall of fame is the one with her on his back, resting peacefully while he keeps her safe. He also named the oven after her! Kids love to come to Joe’s for birthday parties, and they get to make their own pizza, and carefully, with supervision, get it into

the oven. He has all kinds of tricks with pizza dough that he shows them, and describes his pizza tricks as being like “the Harlem Globetrotters of Pizza.”

Summertime, And The Learning Is Busy

Center for Lifelong Learning - 121 South Marion Street, Athens, AL 35611 - 256-233-8262 May was a whirlwind of activity at the Center for Lifelong Learning, and it looks like June will be the same. There have been several changes happening.

II is from 4:00 pm - 4:45 pm and is for students with more than 3 months experience. The fee is $90 for the seven week program. The instructor is Kristi Coughlin.

One is, Athens State University has updated its website and moved things around. The Center for Lifelong Learning has moved from the bottom of the page, to the QUICK LINKS AND SEARCH drop down menu. It is located at the top left of the screen now. We want to be sure you can find us when you are looking for summer camps for your children or grandchildren.

There are two art camps this summer. ART EXPLORERS, Ages 8-12, is an enrichment program designed to provide an exploration of a variety of mediums.

Valerie Alexander does a great job engaging students in this exploration of art. Enrollment is limited, so register early. Camp is scheduled Monday-Friday, June 15-19, from 9:00am to noon, at the Center. The fee is $69 for the week.

The other change is that Dr. Diane Sauers has moved to Kentucky. Diane was our director for five years and we will miss her greatly. Her farewell reception was attended by members of the Athens, Decatur, and Madison communities, as well as former students of the Center.

This summer, our most popular camp – SUPER SITTER COURSE, Ages 11 to 15 - will return June 22 – 26, from 9:00 am to noon, Monday – Friday. This course teaches everything you will need to know to be an exceptional babysitter. It includes a trip to the 911 office, arts and crafts, and cupcake decorating.

The fee for the program is $75 and students will get a certificate at the end of the program. This program is co-sponsored with Athens Limestone Hospital.

As always, this is a wonderful opportunity to see talented children shine. Kristi Coughlin will be teaching this camp for the third year.

We are offering a new music camp - RHYTHM CAMP, Ages 11 through Adult teaching the basics of guitar, bass, keyboard, drums, percussion, etc. Class is scheduled Tuesdays, starting June 9 and going through August 4. It is scheduled from 5:30pm – 7:00pm at the Center. There is no class on June 23rd. The fee for this program is $175. The instructor is Barry Kay, a local

musician who plays regularly in area venues.

Another music offering this summer is DISCOVERING VIOLIN, and there will be two classes held on Thursdays. This seven week program is for students who have little or no experience

Off on Another Man Trip

We were off on another “man trip,” this time to eat lunch at Miss Mary Bobo’s in Lynchburg, Tennessee.

As usual, women weren’t allowed. They would have hampered important discussions about hemorrhoids, hernias, prostate problems and, of course, women.

Mike Criscillis, alias “Big Mike” was at the wheel of his gargantuan white Hummer, christened the “Rolling Store” (he carries a supply of toilet tissue, bottled water, etc. on board). After serving 37 years in the Army, Mike retired as a Sergeant Major and, he and his wife Shirley, moved to Athens a couple of years ago to be near his mother-in-law.

Huh? How misguided can a guy get? Ewell Smith, a retired Business Manager at ASU acted as IT, and was constantly on his iPhone informing us of our location, direction, and the weather outside. Great job!

Jerry Crabtree, retired Athens Policeman, and President of the Alabama Veterans Museum was back seat driver and in charge of trivia questions. Retired mathematician, Bill Ward, was unofficial trip humorist. I comfortably rode shotgun by virtue of being the chronicler of events. The wielder of the pen gets special privileges.

It was a cold and cloudy morning when we headed north in the Veterans Museum parking lot. Immediately, there was a problem.

“Hey Mike, you’re going the wrong way,” said Ward.

“This is a dead end.” Mike turned around and headed south.

“Hey Mike, you’re going the wrong way, Tennessee is north,” said Ward. Finally, we got on I-65 North. Mike shot past the Fayetteville exit.

“Hey Mike, you missed the turn off,” said Ward.

We ended up at Lewisburg, many miles out of the way.

Lucky for us, Highway 129 East from Petersburg to Lynchburg is a scenic twolaner that meanders through rolling green hills and gushing streams - a route worth taking.

After discussing the latest juicy gossip in Athens, our conversation turned to less important things. “Why are policemen called cops?” asked trivia director, Crabtree. I thought it was because they wore copper badges.

We were stumped. “It’s old English and it stands for “Constable on Patrol,” said Crabtree, pleased with himself. He said it’s acceptable to call policeman cops. Maybe so but, if I’m stopped, I’m going to call him “Sir.” We arrived near noon at tiny Lynchburg, with one traffic light, a dry county and home of Jack Daniel’s Distillery.

I guess drinking whiskey is sinful, but making it isn’t.

Mike wanted to visit the quaint, red brick courthouse built in 1885. There was no security. Any clown can walk right in. And that’s what we did.

“I have four guys here that want to get married,” Mike told the startled clerk. She wasn’t amused. “Since there are four of us, can you give us a discount?” I asked.

“I can give you directions down the road,” she replied.

We laughed. I’m sure we left a favorable impression and she’ll remember Athens for years to come.

Everyone was hungry. We arrived at Miss Bobo’s early and the door was locked. We waited in the rolling store with the motor running and the heat on. BS’ing began.

And it got deep. “Don’t write that down, Jerry,” was the constant instruction to me.

“Hey Mike, there’s enough hot air inside the car,” said Ward. “You can turn off the heat.”

The guests at our table were a family from Hendersonville, Tennessee. One lady has a relative in Athens. We decided we were cousins and the bantering began. The meal was a cholesterol feast.

Heaping bowls of cornbread, fried okra, white beans floating in ham hocks, pork ribs, chicken pastry, baked apples cooked in Jack Daniels and greens, all washed down with sweetened tea and served family style, passed from right to left. Pie and coffee came afterwards.

Finally Miss Bobo’s opened for business. Reservations are required, and you can call (931-759-7392) to get them. The place was packed.

Cost per person is $23. I was standing in the foyer when two women approached me.

“Mister, will you marry us?” the blonde asked. I looked over and saw Mike and Crabtree laughing. Big joke on me. The women laughed, then introduced themselves.

They were good friends - not gay - having met eight years earlier in Hawaii where their husbands were serving with the Marines.

Promptly at 1 p.m. the dinner bell rang, and we were escorted into the original dining room and seated at a long wooden table with nine other guests. Our hostess gave a short history of the place.

The two-story frame house was constructed in 1867 over a natural spring, and is located on the National Register for Historic Places. As we drove away, the women were walking down the sidewalk toward town.

“SEE YA’LL, COUSINS!” We yelled and waved. They laughed and waved back.

Then we saw the two women friends who jokingly asked me to marry them. “YA’LL MARRIED YET?” I yelled.

Heads turned. Mike got lost and kept going around in a circle and we kept passing the same women. “Let’s get out of here before we get arrested for stalking!” exclaimed Crabtree.

We headed to Kelso, a few miles east of Fayetteville on U.S. Highway 64, to tour Prichard’s Distillery (

We were greeted at the front door by the owner’s son. The tiny distillery is family operated and began distilling hand-crafted rums, whiskey and liqueurs in 1997, in an abandoned brick school building. The tour was free and fun. Half thimble size samples were offered. I was reminded of Daddy, who also made hand crafted corn whiskey in his boutique still way back in 1947. He didn’t offer tours.

Sheriff John Sandlin, who had no appreciation for art and free enterprise, chopped up the still with an axe.

Prichard’s is marketed in 42 states and 8 European countries. The biggest seller is “Sweet Lucy,” a bourbon based liqueur. A sign on the wall proclaims, “I promise I will never give Sweet Lucy to a woman if I don’t want to see her naked.” Bill Ward purchased a bottle - strictly for a souvenir - I presume.

We stopped in Fayetteville and visited Alabama Veteran Museum friend, Jack Miller, Westside Antiques, one of the many antique shops around the square.

Check it out. It is said that a good laugh a day will extend life. If true, I ought to live an extra 25 years based on that one trip alone.

Sometimes life is so tough and we have to make decisions that are heart breaking. I recently have lost a few of my “babies” to various illnesses. To me, it is untimely for them because many of them were not old. I know God has His reasons for taking them home, and I await the day I will see them again.

Recently my “baby”, Samson, seems to have developed a case of “wobblers.” It has not been definitely determined by a veterinarian, but he has all the signs. I have added a serious multivitamin to his diet called “Dinovite.”

Between that and having a homeopathic animal specialist, Nikki, who

comes to work on Samson from time to time, it has helped tremendously.

And, let me say, that he has improved. Unfortunately, she has not been able to see him for a few weeks, but I believe the “Dinovite” is working.

Samson has always been very playful and vocal. He loves to run and play ball, even when the neighbors’ kids run in all directions and leave him with their ball. He looks funny with his butt in the air, bowing over the ball between his paws, his tail just wagging in the air.

When that happens, I see kids on top of vehicles looking scared because Samson is hovering over their ball looking for them

to come play and not understanding why they are gone. Remembering this has been hard for me to see him not as agile as he was. Some people would give up and think they are doing a mercy for Samson and have him put down. To me, that would be the ultimate betrayal.

We must never forget that they have feelings too, and they look to us for safety and security.

Now, why discuss this? I will tell you why. Since having him on “Dinovite,” I have seen him up and running more.

He still loses his balance from time to time, but he is determined. Because he looks cute running sideways, at times I giggle

and call him my “Side Winder.” He gets vocal at times when I pick at him, and then the love he has for me shows because he licks my hand and leans on me. Oh the light in his eyes is so bright when he looks at me!

Someone out there is going through a hard time and I believe they need to hear someone like me tell them not to give up. A dog promises one simple thing to us: they promise to give us their all.

We should do the same.

So, when life gets tough, don’t give up. When considering the quality of life for our “fur babies,” think as to why we decide what we will for them

and whether or not it is being selfish. One more thing: do not allow someone else to influence your decision. It is not they who will answer for what is decided, and if they are a true friend they will support any decision you make.

“Remember to love your dogs because they love you. Maybe not the way you want them to, like chewing up your favorite shoes or what not, but that is just love chewing. Be thankful for the time you have with them always.”

Shhh….It’s A Secret!

by Rachel Clark, RN, BSN Several weeks ago, I saw a Facebook post about how secrets can be dangerous things. Webster’s Dictionary defines a secret as something we keep hidden from the knowledge of others.

Teaching children about secrets is an important part of keeping them safe from the long-term effects that can be caused by abuse.

According to a sexual abuse prevention workshop called “Parenting Safe Children,” secrecy is a key element to childhood sexual abuse.

A Denver mom wrote a blog post about her experience with teaching her son an alternative to secret keeping. In her home, she teaches her children about surprises instead. She recounts the

story of a friend who gave her son a cookie and said “shhh…it’s a secret.” To the mom’s utter delight, the son told the woman that in his home, they don’t do “secrets,” but instead they do “surprises.”

The mom explains “Surprises are something we keep quiet about temporarily; then you share the surprise and people are happy. But secrets are meant to be kept quiet forever and they are often protecting something that would make people unhappy.” Surprises are things like a birthday party or a gift. Secrets like sexual abuse leave longlasting scars on everyone involved.

Often times, sexual predators will test children by asking them to keep smaller secrets (like cook-

ies or other treats), building up to bigger and bigger secrets about what is happening to them. By teaching her children different terminology, she is bypassing this common method of trapping children in the abuse cycle. This little boy was bold enough to say that he doesn’t keep secrets.

He is no longer a vulnerable target because of the wisdom of his mother in teaching him about body safety.

It is vital to start early teaching children about their bodies and which parts are ok to touch and which parts aren’t. If these important lessons are instilled in them early on, they are less likely to experience abuse, and the devastating effects it can lead to in the future such

as anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation/attempts.

Body Safety Rules include the following (adapted from Parenting Safe Children Workshop developed

by Sandy Wertele, Ph.D. and Feather Berkower, MSW): 1.No one is allowed to touch your private parts 2.You should not touch someone else’s private parts 3.No one is allowed to take pictures of your private parts 4.If someone tries to touch your private parts, say “NO!” 5.When playing friends, play with your clothes on 6.You are allowed to have privacy when bathing, dressing and using the

toilet 7.You have permission to say “No” and get away if someone tries to touch your private parts or breaks any of your body safety rules 8.We don’t keep secrets in our family. If someone tells you to keep a secret, tell an adult.

Also, educate children that doctors and nurses sometimes have to examine these private parts of their bodies and that is ok, because Mommy or Daddy is with them.

Begin to teach your children these rules now to eliminate them as targets later. If you don’t yet have children, adopt the practice now of not keeping “secrets” so that it will be easier to instill in them these principles when you do.
