It is hard to believe, when you meet her, that Dr. Sharon Bush-Coaxum has been a doctor long enough to have delivered at least 700 babies. “I don’t keep count,” she said with a smile, “but I know it’s at least that many.” As of this writing, Dr. Bush-Coaxum has been at the Valley Women’s Center, located just east of the Athens Publix Shopping Center on Hwy 72, for a little over a week. She is a young doctor who has wisdom and experience beyond her years, and a passion to help her patients in ways I’ll explain further below.

Volumes have already been written on the life and passing of Billy Graham, inarguably one of the finest men of faith the people of God have ever been able to claim as a “gift.” And while I am not sure that I have anything to say that hasn’t already been said, please let me use this space and time to express my thanks for his life and the impact it had on me.

I heard him preach once, and that was in 1976, in the Kingdome in Seattle. It happened to be the first event ever held in a building that was wracked by financial scandal, where people died in construction accidents, where lawsuits were abundant, and it was eventually torn down. I will never forget, even though I was already a Christian, the simplicity and the sincerity of his message, and how touched I was by the sight of people by the thousands streaming down to the altar to surrender to Christ. The music was classic and lofty, and the Crusade ended up being the most wellattended events in the history of the Kingdome.

Seventy-four thousand people had the chance to choose for eternity, and by the time Reverend Graham knocked on the pearly gates, it is estimated that 2.2 billion people heard the Gospel message.

So, what was it about Billy? What made this simple country boy so special? Without question, the lion’s share of it had to be the anointing of the Holy Spirit, the choice of God to be

a pure voice proclaiming the simplest message of love that changed the lives of millions. That cannot be quantified; as a former pastor of mine so wisely once said, “It is just better felt than telt.”

Some of it was practical, just good “walkin’ around sense.” He had a policy of having his security team make sure that any hotel room in which he stayed was secured and guaranteed to be empty before Billy ever went in to catch 40 winks. His ministry was not tainted by scandal, which was refreshing especially in the decades when it seemed that ministries were blowing up on a daily basis.

He loved his Ruth, and for her part, in 1941 she wrote the following before she ever met and married him: “Dear God, I prayed, all unafraid (as we're inclined to do), I do not need a handsome man but let him be like You; I do not need one big and strong nor yet so very tall,

nor need he be some genius, or wealthy, Lord, at all; but let his head be high, dear God, and let his eye be clear, his shoulders straight, whate'er his state, whate'er his earthly sphere; and let his face have character, a ruggedness of soul, and let his whole life show, dear God, a singleness of goal; then when he comes (as he will come) with quiet eyes aglow, I'll understand that he's the man I prayed for long ago.”

Now while I know that Billy (whom Ruth always called “Bill) needed a Savior just like the rest of us, I would say that God answered Ruth’s prayer abundantly. Billy mentioned that after he retired, and in the years before she died, it was as though they had the chance to be college sweethearts again. All those years of sacrifice were restored, all the

years she had to function as a single mom for our sakes, all the nights they laid awake on separate continents praying for their kids and each other, were poured back out upon them in abundant reward.

As dear as the story of all this late-in-life marital tenderness is, my personal thanks for the life of Billy Graham has to do with the fact that Billy understood (back in the era which in church history is now referred to as the Jesus People Movement) that hippie kids like me could be reached and eternally changed.

We really could choose Christ over cannabis, and his love for us made us want to come home.

Billy loved everyone, and everyone, from presidents to plumbers knew it. Rest in peace, dear brother. By God’s grace, you made us better.

Airman, Olympian, Slave

by Ali Elizabeth Turner Guor Maker has without a doubt one of the most triumphant stories of what it means to become an American that I have ever heard.

In April, he will be 34 years old, and in his brief life he has been a slave, an Olympic marathon runner, and for one month now, he has been an Airman in the United States Air Force.

Born in 1984, into the Dinka tribe of the Sudan, he experienced losing 8 of his siblings and being a slave twice. Once he was captured by Sudanese soldiers, and once he was held captive by a herdsman. He escaped slavery, and then escaped a refugee camp, got to Egypt, and was able to come to the United States at the age of 16. He taught him-

Committee. He had permanent resident status and had started the naturalization process to become a U.S. citizen, and wanted to run in honor of his war-torn former country.

Because of the two million people who had been killed by the North, he felt it would have been a betrayal of the memory of those who had been slaughtered to run for the North. In the 2016 Olympics, he ran with two fellow team mates representing South Sudan for the first time. Regarding his experience in the 2016 games, he said, “I couldn’t have accomplished any of it without all the support I received from my family and the opportunity the United States gave me. It’s the highlight of my athletic career so far and a moment I’ll treasure forever.”

So far this is enough of a story to make me cheer, but it gets better. On February 1, Guor started his basic training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, and here is what he said: “All of the things

Guor Maker is a humble man, so much so that when he began his training last month, no one in his unit knew who he was.

As his story came out, numbers of people on the base were inspired to the point that they began to tell his story for him, and the media got involved.

He is on the medical track for his training, and one of the things he loves to do is help trainees who are struggling. He also is still heading toward his dreams. The next one is to be a military worldclass athlete and compete once again in the Olympics, and I have no doubt he’ll do it. “Joining the greatest Air Force in the world has been an absolute miracle,” said Maker.

“I can’t wait to see what this next chapter holds for me.”

All I can say is, even if it’s belated, “Welcome to America, Guor. You do us all proud.”

What Makes Ronnie Roll

Enjoy The Ride, Part 3

by Ali Elizabeth Turner It had been two weeks full of wins: the Home & Garden Show was a great success, Chili Challenge was bursting at the seams with attendees, and the AthensLimestone Community Association’s 5th Annual Black History Month celebration was a total delight. “Given how polarized our country is right now, it is nice to know that people in Athens are coming together,” said the mayor.

Mayor Ronnie was getting ready to leave the next day for the Big Apple. He and a finance team were going to make a presentation regarding securing funding for the new Rec Center.

You may recall, the last time they went to New York City, Birmingham/ Jefferson County had just made national news by declaring bankruptcy, and the lenders were initially

certain that Athens-Limestone County had been cut from the same cloth.

Because of the soundness of fiscal practices in our city along with an excellent presentation, they came home with a funding package for the new high school. Mayor Ronnie was confident that the team would return home this time with good news as well; still, high finance meetings in New York are not a walk in the park, and he was looking forward to getting back home as soon as possible.

We turned to the discussion of the title of the series, Enjoy The Ride. It was about attitude, and the mayor was glad to be having a reminder of the fact that, as author Steve Gilliand says, “Your attitude is either your best friend or your worst enemy. Your reactions to other people,

however, are really just barometers for how you perceive yourself. Your reactions to others say more about you than they do about others.” Gilliand says it again later in the chapter more briefly: “Our attitude determines our approach to life. Nothing is as contagious as example.”

We then discussed the role of adversity when it comes to determining attitude. “No one likes failure,” said the mayor, and I nodded. “But fumbling is a part of football, and failing is a part of success,” he said, and that’s a quote

from the book. I then had an unusually powerful opportunity to personally fail, and to test the mayor’s attitude. I am fairly well-known for talking with my hands, and as I gestured while we were talking about attitude and failure, I managed to knock over my coffee, soak the mayor’s autographed copy of Enjoy The Ride, ruin the copy of the presentation that he would make in NYC, and create a pool of java all over the round table in his office where we always sit. It was the perfect storm. I ran to find some

paper towels, cleaned up my mess, and he will have a reminder forever of the chance he had to “bring his own sunshine.” This wasn’t just any book I had inadvertently baptized, it had been autographed by the author at a conference the mayor had attended with other mayors.

I am pleased to report that Mayor Ronnie passed the test with flying colors.

He could tell I felt badly, and he assured me all was well.

So, there was nothing left to do but pray, and pray we did. And then, it was time for Ronnie to roll.

Slinkard On Success

Don’t Lull Yourself To Sleep

D.A. Slinkard is the manager of the Athens Staples store What do you want to accomplish in 10 years? What do you want to accomplish in 5 years? What do you want to accomplish in the next year? What do you want to accomplish in the next 3 months? I start this article with these questions because many of us have an idea of what we want to accomplish yet go about life thinking in terms of 1 year, 5 years, or 10 years. Too often we think about what we want to do tomorrow but fail to live our lives for today.

I think about the phrase, “Coulda, shoulda, woulda,” and how many of us will look back on our lives and say, “I wish I could have...I wish I should have...or I wish I would have with my life?” We need to stop thinking about the 1 year, 5 years, 10 years and start thinking about the 3-month time frame. Even though the older I get the faster time seems to fly by, thinking in terms of years gives us a temporary break from having to act fast on our goals.

When we think of 1 year we silently say to ourselves that we have 364 more days to go after the goal. What happens is we adopt a nonurgent mentality and the 364 days dwindles down to being yet another year passing us by with no monumental change in our life.

We begin to reflect upon our lives and think in terms of failures or how our lives are incomplete versus seeing our lives for what they can be. When we see ourselves in the negative light of being a failure or feeling in-

knew would give your life meaning.

Any successful person will tell you it all started by them taking that first step. The old Chinese proverb states, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”

No one will ever have all of the answers of life, but the best lessons learned are those we learn along the way. How many times did we think our parents were ignorant and did not know anything when they tried teaching us life lessons? How wrong we were?

It is much easier to make an excuse than to actually take the necessary actions to generate the desired outcome of any situation. I believe this mentality is what separates the “haves” from the “havenots” in society. How many hateful words are spoken about someone who finds success compared to the words of sympathy for those who failed because they did not take the necessary action? It amazes me how much compassion we show people who fail to achieve versus those who actually do.

Think about the participation trophies, we demean the true winner by trying to include all, and this has created the “snowflake” mentality.

Life is short, and the Bible tells us that our life is but a vapor that appears for a short time and then vanishes away.

We must listen to the Good

When you step out on your journey to living the life you have always wanted, you will have problems along the way. Rich people have problems in their life just like poor people; and those who do not are buried in the cemeteries. We never know when our time will come to an end, but we must be prepared to act today - not 1 year from now, not 5, not 10. We can be anything, do anything, but we must take that first step.

Book and then go do something about it. Open up the obituaries in the newspaper and realize that could be any of us in there. We cannot take our time on Earth for granted and we must act with a sense of urgency, with a sense that today may be our last because it just might be.

This is why we must think in shorter time frames of accomplishing our hopes, our dreams, and our goals. We can lull ourselves to sleep thinking we have all this time available us until suddenly we become but a memory to someone else. So, now is the time to think about what is important to you and just go do it. Pick up the phone and call that family member who you haven’t spoken to in years. Make the decision now to go to the local university and pursue that college degree you have always wanted. Decide now to start that business you always

Meet EM3 Mike Hardy, US Navy

Mike was born in Pittsburg, Kansas, in 1946 and grew up in several places, including Kansas, Kentucky, Indiana and Oklahoma. Mike decided to join the US Navy Reserves while still in high school and he went “regular” Navy after graduation. He joined the military because he felt it was his duty to serve his country, and he followed his dad’s advice to join the Navy.

From 1963 – 1967, Mike served in the Navy in the electrical field, which in a rare instance at the time, he got to choose! Mike was stationed at the Naval Amphibious Base, Little Creek in Virginia Beach, VA. Simply known as “Little Creek” the base is the major operating base for the Amphibious Forces in the United States Navy's Atlantic Fleet. The mission of the Naval Amphibious Base is to provide required sup-

port services to over 15,000 personnel of the 27 home-ported ships and 78 resident and/ or supported activities.

The base's combination of operational, support, and training facilities are geared predominantly to amphibious operations, making the base unique among bases of the United States and Allied Navies.

Mike was in charge and responsible for the electrical systems on amphibious craft and the amphibious assault squadron. Mike’s most memorable times in the military were his two short tours to Vietnam; he got to see some of the world that he will probably never get to see again. After completing his enlistment, Mike decided to separate from the Navy because he tired of being away from his family for long periods of time.

After leaving the Navy, he

went to work for the Army Corps of Engineers. He later worked for the Kentucky Dept. of Child Welfare and has been in factory maintenance in various locations for the rest of his work history.

Mike says he likes being able to support and associate with “true Americans,” we (veterans) all have signed that blank check for our country and his being a member in veteran’s organizations continues this service by helping veterans. This is the reason he is active in many of our local Veteran Service Organizations to include being a Life Member in American Veterans (AMVETS), Veterans of Foreign Wars

(VFW), Vietnam Veterans of America, (VVA) and also an annual member in the American Legion.

Mike has been on the Board of Directors at the Alabama Veterans Museum as a representative of AMVETS for about 4 years. He is also our resident chaplain.

In his words, Mike says that he wanted to be a part of the museum because of “The great people and the willingness to support our veterans by establishing one of the best veterans’ museums around, the professionalism of the museum staff, and the dedication of the volunteers.” He also feels that the museum needs more attention - “The displays are just a small piece

of the many veterans’ lives, some who gave it all, some who made personal sacrifices in their life for our country. To recognize this museum or make a contribution, whether monetary or artifact, is just a small price to pay to recognize those who gave so much so we may live in a free country.” Mike would like to see the museum get the community to help with donations to the building fund so Limestone County will have a museum that is second to none.

Mike’s loving life-partner is Corrine, and he says she is 1005 percent behind whatever he does! Corrine has 2 sons from a previous marriage and Mike has 3 sons by a previous marriage. His oldest son was career Army National Guard with 22 years of service, his second son served in the Army Airborne and was stationed on the DMZ in Korea. Corrine’s youngest son is a career firefighter in Kentucky.

Mike would also like to add, “May God continue to bless our museum and our supporters; without the public support and the support of our veterans, we will fail as a museum. I pray that our community will come together and see how important it is to preserve our country’s history.

God Bless the United States of America and the countless men and women who have served our country.”

Wanted: Dead Or Alive

by Tina Cook Director, Athens-Limestone County Family Resource Center I read a statement recently about alcoholism being a disorder of remissions and relapses and, often, premature death. It further stated that roughly one-third of all alcoholics die before their 60th birthday.� I believe it completely because I have experienced it firsthand. I am a recovering alcoholic who spent 28 years going in and out of rehab and12Step meetings. I have had my share of closecalls with death. I am sure there are countless other brushes I am not even aware of! I watched many of my drinking buddies die directly and indirectly from alcoholism. During my 6+ years of sobriety, I have seen folks die from relapse and sober people die from irreversible damage done to their bodies from previous drinking years. Alcoholism is a disease that wants us dead!

Even though I was aware of the death sentence that alcoholism wants to

condemn alcoholics to, I did not know the statistic about 1/3 of all alcoholics dying. But after I read that statement, things became real clear for me. I was given a mental picture of myself as a little girl holding hands with my two best friends. We were racing around the playground enjoying life to the fullest. River Cleanups And Volunteers – The Need Continues

A Huge Thank You! On Saturday, February 24, a wonderful thing happened.

The most wonderful part is that it happened without KALB initiating the event.

KALB received a call from Richard Lax, a Tanner resident who is deeply concerned about the litter he has seen in the Swan Creek Wildlife Management Area. He didn’t just complain about it, and he didn’t call KALB and suggest we clean it up. Mr. Lax took it upon himself to work with David Whiteside and Tennessee Riverkeepers to organize a cleanup.

KALB happily provided trash bags, gloves, litter grabbers, and hand sanitizer for the volunteers. We also made contact with Jason Black, Limestone County Commissioner for the area, to ask for his help in picking up the trash bags and other debris after the cleanup. Mr. Black was pleased to help.

About 30 volunteers arrived ready to work. At the end of the day, 2,100 lbs. of trash and debris were removed from the area, including 16 tires and 2 mattresses. That weight did not include all

Last year, more than 50 volunteers removed 7,380 lbs. of trash and debris from the river and surrounding land areas. Some items found included tires, television sets, mattresses, carpet, broken glass, and bags of trash.

The Swan Creek Wildlife Management Area on the Tennessee River in Limestone County is part of the Alabama Birding Trails and home to waterfowl, small game, and mudflats covered with shorebirds. This is a beautiful area of our county worthy of the cleanup received.

Elk River Canoe & Kayak Trail Cleanup – March 10th If you haven’t had the opportunity to visit Limestone County’s section of the Elk River, you are missing out on one of our greatest treasures.

You don’t have to travel by canoe or kayak to enjoy the beauty of the river, although it is a great way to do it. You can also find many places along its banks to take in the peaceful beauty it offers.

There are a variety of opportunities for recreation at the river, including fishing, swimming, boating, camping, bird watching, and so much more.

Environmental awareness has increased; however, some people continue to use our river as a dumping ground for unwanted items, such as tires, television sets, furniture, appliances and more. Plastic is the material found most often in U.S. waterways. Plastics can be extremely hazardous to wildlife causing internal organ failure if ingested, or slow strangulation.

I cannot understand the mentality of people who purposely trash our beautiful county, or any other location for that matter. Amish Oatmeal Pie

Every year, after we have experienced our first warm day, I begin champing at the bit to go visit the Amish community, just north of us, in Lawrenceburg, TN. I love the serenity of the rolling hills, the children playing while the parents work in the fields, and the smell of fresh clean air. You will find amazing vegetables. Some of the greatest tasting tomatoes and peppers you have ever eaten! Potatoes, onions, squash, every variety of pea and bean, fresh herbs… and that’s just the beginning. A few of the Amish homes feature hand-made quilts and rugs. They make beautiful furniture and gorgeous baskets. You will also find an amazing variety of breads and pastries. If you’re really lucky, you will pull up to one of the farm houses, just as they are pulling fresh baked bread out of the oven. DELICIOUS! I happen to love Amish Oatmeal Pie. If you like pecan pie, you will fall in love with this pie. It’s gooey, it’s comforting, it’s amazing. Now you may be wondering, why put oatmeal in a pie? This pie dates back to the early 1800s, and at that time they didn’t always have access to fresh nuts or the money to afford them. So,

they turned to what they had readily available to make a sweet treat with, and oatmeal won out. I’m sure many of you have enjoyed Chocolate Oatmeal cookies; this pie has that same gooey texture, but without the chocolate.

This summer, make the trip to Amish country. Enjoy the slow pace. Stock up on vegetables. Bask in the sun.

Smell the fresh clean air. Round out your trip with a yummy sweet treat.

Amish Oatmeal Pie What You Need:

1 1/4 c. brown sugar, packed 3/4 c. old-fashioned rolled oats 3/4 c. milk 1/2 c. sugar 3 large eggs, beaten 3 tbsps. butter, room temperature 1 1/2 tsps. vanilla extract 1/4 tsp salt 1 unbaked pie shell Vanilla ice cream, optional March 2 - March 15, 2018

Directions: Preheat oven to 350º F and line a pie dish with unbaked pie crust.

In a large bowl, stir together brown sugar, oats, sugar, and salt; then stir in milk, beaten eggs, butter and vanilla extract.

Continue stirring until fully combined.

Pour mixture into pie shell, then place in oven.

Bake for 45-50 minutes, or until pie is cooked through.

The Innocence and the Ecstasy

by Rosemary Dewar Although innocence is defined as a state of lacking assigned guilt, there is a social aspect of innocence that can include a level of naivety and witlessness. It is accompanied by a deficiency of knowledge and experience. No one comes out of the womb knowing all things and evaluating them properly. Wisdom comes from knowing which information to throw out, and which information to integrate in order to effectively calculate a solution. Foolishness is just the opposite. Try doing the worthless thing enough times expecting a different outcome will drive oneself insane. One of two things will manifest. Either the community will dub the foolish person “the village idiot,” or the community will follow the fool to the point that there is a village full of useful idiots. Culture can either recognize that it is vulnerable to immature perspectives, or it can promote weak innocence.

Children are innocent and less formidable simply because they do not know enough. The reason for preserving innocence in children is to gradually develop the resistance to what will hurt them.

control over what trauma is introduced into a child’s life; however, how the culture demonstrates the way to resolve that trauma will determine if the child will become willfully ignorant or wisely constructive. If culture organizes children to become adults that are easy to manipulate, that will leave the community susceptible to being able to be taken advantage of.

When someone takes away another’s ability to defend themselves, it is a violation of autonomy. How culture reaches solace amidst conflict can determine how moral it is.

The Judeo-Christian perspective asserts that an effective and moral way to confront and neutralize hostile engagement is to have intimidating strength, to know your strength, and be ready to restrain it for as long as possible. It states that you ought to be “wise as a serpent, and innocent as a dove.” A serpent is an ominous creature. It is partially instrumental in man’s exile from Paradise. Nevertheless, if your intent is to become that wise serpent, for the sake of all that is ethical and honorable, do not bite. You must hold your ground until you have to defend yourself. The text

Valley Women’s Center Welcomes Dr. Sharon Bush-Coaxum, MD

Dr. Bush-Coaxum is a native of Mobile, Alabama, and always knew she wanted to do something that would truly make a difference. It was her pediatrician who planted in her the seed of possibility with regard to becoming a doctor, and indeed, she is the first physician in her entire family! Dr. Bush-Coaxum received her undergraduate degree in biology from Tuskegee, and went to medical school at the University of South Alabama.

She did her residency and internship at Tulane University, and practiced in Enterprise, Alabama, for four years before coming to Athens. She had strongly considered becoming a pediatrician, but it wasn’t until her OB rotation while in medical school that she knew she had found it, the specialty she was put on this earth to practice.

Dr. Bush-Coaxum is a fellow with the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, holds an Alabama Medical license and is a member of the American Medical Association. During her residency, she was the recipient of the Council on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology (CREOG) 2013 Excellent Performance Award.

She did research while at Tulane on the differences in perspectives between the North and the South regarding Caesarean deliveries. While at SUNY in Buffalo, NY, she wrote papers on the effects of methamphetamines on sperm, and the effects of the endocannabinoids in marijuana on human umbilical cord

To say that Dr. BushCoaxum has many interests and that her CV is fascinating is an understatement. We talked at length about her love for flying, which has translated into her currently completing the process of joining the United States Air Force Reserves. She’ll be serving out of Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, and will train there one weekend a month and two weeks a year. She wants to become a flight surgeon, is interested in expanding her skill set by studying field medicine, and she also wants to fly airplanes! “That (piloting a plane) won’t happen for a few years,” she told me, but I am sure it will be worth the wait, given her love for flight. With regard to the unusual things she has done as a result of studying medicine, Dr. Bush-Coaxum is also certified as a medical examiner.

Dr. Bush-Coaxum is married to Louis Coaxum, who is a lawyer in partnership with his brother. They met in college and she says, “It was love at first sight.” At the moment they are the proud parents of “fur babies,” but are looking forward to someday raising a family here in Athens.

Dr. Bush-Coaxum has a vision for her patients that has in part been “birthed” as a result of the high level of obesity amongst women in the state of Alabama. She makes it her responsibility to educate her patients as to the risks in pregnancy that are increased by obesity, and the effect it has on

mothers as well as babies.

“I use a lot of handouts, and do my best to make sure my patients’ questions are answered. I found early in my career that many women would go to the doctor and not have a clue what they were being told about their medical condition or the

treatments they would receive. They wouldn’t even know what questions to ask, and weren’t comfortable in asking anything,” she said, and that was something she set out to change. “I had to deal with a lot of misunderstandings that women have, such as the idea that exercise is not good for you when you are pregnant. I am all about preventative care, being active, and getting good nutrition, because it makes such a big difference” she said.

Interestingly, Dr. BushCoaxum’s vision is the same for women who are dealing with menopause.

“It’s still about prevention and fighting obesity,” she said. “Anything that women face is going to be affected by obesity, but it’s not about the weight, it’s about build-

ing health,” she added. She also has a great interest in adolescent gynecology, and loves to help young women really understand what is happening in their bodies. After all, it was her own pediatrician that set this whole dream-cometrue of becoming a doctor in motion, and out of gratitude, Dr. Bush-Coaxum wants to keep paying it forward here in Athens. In Harm’s Way - Part II

No one had to tell Major Clarence R. Little that Vietnam was a dangerous place. He had survived two thunderous mortar attacks and been shot by a Viet Cong sniper. Would his luck hold? Would he live to see his wife Diane and their two young sons again back in Sunnyvale, California? They never missed watching the nightly news, hoping to see him.

He was riding shotgun in a Jeep through “Mine Alley,” a stretch of road heavily mined by Viet Cong.

Unknown to Little, they had buried explosives in the road with wires running to a tree line. A VC waited to set it off electrically by touching two wires together when an American vehicle passed over it. Standard policy, when seeing a mine hole, was to go fast and stop short or go slow, then speed up.

The driver spotted a mine hole and slammed on his brakes. The VC touched the wires together, but his timing was off. The blast occurred in front of the Jeep. Little’s luck was holding. “I got hit in the right hand with shrapnel.” No big sweat.

While on patrol, a booby trap with trip wires connected to a hand grenade was discovered.

They marked the spot by laying two palm leaves over the trip wire, about a foot off the ground, so

that his soldiers could see it. One man didn’t see the leaves and trip wire.

A sergeant ran up to Little and yelled, “Mine!”

Little turned around and looked at him just as it went off. “His back protected me. He had eleven holes in his back.”

Little, with shrapnel in his left leg, picked up his sergeant and carried him to a chopper. Both were evacuated to a hospital in Saigon.

After his leg was sutured, Little limped over to the officers club and ordered two drinks, drank one and carried the other back to his wounded sergeant. “You’d better down it now,” he said and went outside and sat down.

Little landed in Vinh Long Province, spent the night in a fancy four story military building and was having chow in the mess hall when his old friend, Col. Rausch walked up. He invited Little up to the fourth floor for a drink. “When I walked in, it was a dance

“Why are you mad at me?”

“You brought one of your men a drink, but didn’t bring one to me.”

The next morning Little awoke in the hospital and saw a medic outside cutting up sand bags and putting them on the grass to make it grow. The combat veteran nearly lost his cool. “I’d been begging for sand bags for months to protect lives and here they were using them to make grass grow in Saigon.” Little had enough of the hospital. He asked his nurse for permission to go purchase a new uniform.

“You can’t leave the hospital,” she said. “You

Little’s alarm bell went off. Pattern! Never, never establish a pattern. He excused himself, went downstairs, grabbed his .45 pistol, shoved it in his back waist band and returned to the bar. Little’s instinct was correct.

“Sure as hell at midnight I heard a machine gun.”

He ran over to a windowed door that lead to

a balcony, looked down and saw the muzzle blast of a machine gun near the front gate. Knowing that a .45 pistol was no match for a machine gun, he ran back inside looking for a rifle; Little went down to the first floor and saw a soldier holding a carbine with a banana clip. “Give it to me!” Then he asked, “Are there any “friendlies” across the street?”

The solder was hesitant.

“My God man, I’m going to kill them! Do you have any friendlies across the street?”

“No sir! I’m not that drunk,” replied the soldier.

Little hurried back to the fourth floor, jumped over a man lying on the floor, and went to the balcony. He chambered a round and opened fire at the muzzle blast.

Machine gun bullets stitched the wall within a foot of where Little stood. He emptied the carbine at the muzzle blast. “I ran back inside and had to jump over this same guy again. He was the colonel in charge of the whole damn thing.”

Little ran downstairs looking for ammo. The soldier didn’t have any more, so he returned the carbine, pulled out his .45 pistol and went out the back door and over to the corner of the building. He saw the duty officer standing by the gate pillar. The duty NCO was behind the other one. Little ran Continued on page 24

N is for Narcissism

Narcissus was a very handsome hunter in Greek mythology. Many nymphs fell in love with him, but he showed them only contempt, including Echo, who tried to hug him. Narcissus pushed her away and told her never to disturb him.

Nemesis, the goddess of revenge, upon learning what had happened, led Narcissus to a pool, where he saw his reflection in the water.

He immediately fell in love with it. When time passed, he realized that it was just his reflection and he fell into despair.

According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th ed. (DSM-V), narcissism is a pathological condition in which the individual experiences pervasive patterns of “grandiosity,” a need for admiration, and a lack of empathy. Often, narcissists present with an exaggerated sense of self-importance and are preoccupied with their own fantasies of power or beauty. Narcissists believe that they are “special” and often require excessive admiration. Their lack of empathy leads to a sense of entitlement and a desire to exploit others. In my private practice, I have learned that the narcissists themselves are challeng-

ing to engage because they believe that everyone else is the problem! By about 2:1, I meet with those individuals who are living or working with the narcissist. Many books have been written about dealing with narcissists, but I have been able to compress my experiences into five suggestions. So here we go…how to deal with a narcissist: 1. Encourage the narcissist to redirect his/her impulses to do things that benefit other people. Narcissists struggle with empathy, but love to nurture their egos.

So, maybe point them toward aligning their need for praise and admiration with positive behaviors that help the community.

I’ll bet there are a lot of narcissists who run charities. We all have a little bit of me, me, me tendencies in us. But if we can channel these inclinations into doing something for

other people, then maybe this self-absorption can produce some positive results.

2. Ask the narcissist, “What would people think?” My experience has been that narcissists don’t feel guilt, but they do feel shame. Appearances are important to them.

While they rarely consider others’ feelings, they might be willing to act on ideas, especially ideas they think they thought up themselves! So, if you can emphasize community, you can use potential disappointment instead of anger, to keep them in line.

3. Know what you want and get paid up front.

Don’t expect fairness. It’s okay for you to get whatever it is that you need before they get what they need. To narcissists, everything is quid pro quo.

So, keep a record in your mind, and make sure that

whatever they dangle in front of you, you get before you give. Dealing with narcissists tends to be unpredictable, so reward behavior, NEVER words.

When narcissists do what you want, they get what they want.

4. Pretend to agree or say nothing. Now hear me out.

If you want to effectively communicate with narcissists, you have to admire them as much as they do.

And usually this isn’t too difficult. All you have to do is listen. There is a term called “narcissistic injury.” This means pointing out to narcissists that they aren’t all they think they are, can be like pulling the pin on a grenade. Alternatives just don’t work… reject them and they will freak; act weak and you’ll become a victim; uncover them and they will hate you forever.

5. Just stay away. Nar-

cissists have the ability to make those around them miserable. So if you have the option, get out!

The question becomes, SHOULD I even make the attempt, instead of HOW do I make the attempt?

Narcissism is very hard to change, so run the first chance you get. Otherwise, you will be victimized by them, or worse, become one of them. I suggest that in every opportunity, you surround yourself with people who are good to you. I would rather see the spread of goodness than meanness.

These Health Benefits Of Salt Might Surprise You courtesy BrandPoint content (BPT) - World Salt Awareness Week is being celebrated this year from March 12 to 18 and is the perfect opportunity to recognize all the many benefits of salt. Salt, or sodium chloride, is essential for life. In fact, no mineral is more essential to human survival than sodium because it allows nerves to send and receive electrical impulses, helps your muscles stay strong and keeps your cells and brain functioning. However, sodium chloride (salt) is a nutrient that the body cannot produce, and therefore it must be consumed.

The other component of salt, chloride, is also essential to survival and good health. It preserves

acid-base balance in the body, aids potassium absorption, improves the ability of the blood to move harmful carbon dioxide from tissues out to the lungs and most importantly, supplies the crucial stomach acids required to break down and digest the foods we eat.

Because the level of salt consumption is so stable, it is an ideal medium to fortify with other essential nutrients such as iodine.

Iodized salt was first produced in the U.S. in 1924 and is now used by 75 percent of the world's population to protect against intellectual disability due to Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDD). Iodine is an essential element in healthy

human life, enabling the function of thyroid glands to produce needed hormones for proper metabolism. When children in the womb don't get enough iodine from their mother, fetal brain development may be impaired. Iodized salt remains one of the greatest public health success stories.

Salt is also essential in hospital IV saline, which is standard therapy and the fastest way to deliver fluids and medications throughout the body. This saline drip doesn't just keep patients hydrated, it delivers a 0.9 percent solution of salt. Without this saline drip, patients can end up with low levels of sodium in the blood, resulting in a

condition known as hyponatremia. This serious condition can lead to seizures, coma, permanent brain damage, respiratory arrest and death, and it is why the shortage of saline in hospitals is of such critical importance.

Salt is also a vital component of hydration. After exercise, it is critical to replace both water and salt lost through perspiration.

That is why all athletes make sure they are consuming sufficient salt during and after a workout. Salt rooms are becoming increasingly popular around the globe to aid in the treatment of various pulmonary disorders as well as to promote relaxation and reduce stress. This is because the

unique microclimate, containing ultrafine salt particles, helps clear the lungs.

The average American eats about 3,400 mg per day of sodium, according to The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, and this may be on the low side of the safe range. A 2014 study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, tested sodium consumption in more than 100,000 people in 17 countries.

The study found that the healthy range for sodium consumption was between 3,000 and 6,000 mg per day.

Seniors can be especially susceptible to the dangers of low-salt diets. In 2013 a task force of 12 professional medical, nursing and nutritional organizations assembled by the Pioneer Network published the "New Dining Practice Standards."

Their report concluded that low-salt diets were contributing to malnutrition and weight loss among a significant percentage of seniors in assisted living facilities.

Low-salt diets can also cause seniors to suffer from mild hyponatremia, an electrolyte imbalance in the blood that can lead directly to walking impairment, attention deficits and a much higher frequency of falls.

Watch Out For Who’s Watching You

by Paul Foreman Predators size up their prey before attacking. This is true for alligators, wolves, sharks, and it is also true for violently predatory humans. Be aware of your surroundings and who is watching your movements.

It is much better to stay out of trouble in the first place than to shoot your way out of a life or death situation.

You need to be totally aware of who and what is around you. This applies whether you are pulling into a parking lot, walking into a store, or eating lunch at your favorite burger joint. In cop circles, we have what we call the “Gun Fighter’s Chair.” This was made famous by the gambler and gun fighter, known as Wild Bill Hickok, who met his demise sitting at a poker table with his back to the door. The killer approached from behind and shot Wild Bill in the back of his head. The former Sheriff of Abilene, Texas turned gambler and vagrant, was buried in Deadwood South Dakota. His twin six shooters were sold to pay for the burial plot. In his earlier days, Wild Bill would have always sat so he could see who was approaching him.

The same procedure with “stop and robs.” I mean, convenience stores. Yes, I have actually backed out and left due to not so pleasant looking characters hanging around the outside of a store. Pay attention to your surroundings, and you will be able to avoid trouble. With proper situational awareness and conflict avoidance skills, you will be able to avoid situations which “lessaware” individuals might walk right into.

WHEN IN DOUBT, GET OUT! Conflict avoidance means just that: avoiding conflict. If you feel that you might be in physical danger, you

need to get out of there. If you feel like someone is following you, walk into the next open business ,or move to the opposite side of the street. If you are driving, make two or three right turns, and then check to see if you are still being followed. Drive to a well lighted area. Drive to a Police Station or Fire Department. If you are convinced that you are being followed, DO NOT DRIVE HOME! Call 911 and report what is going on, give them your location and direction of travel. If you can, give them a description of your vehicle and the vehicle following you.

Do not get yourself into a high speed chase. If you see a police car, sound your horn and drive toward them! If you are walking, use the same tactics.

If at night, use your flashlight to get the police’s attention.

If needed, use it to blind the

creep and run. You do carry a good flash light, don’t you?

Today’s lights are a hundred times more powerful than just a few years ago, and the prices have come down dramatically.

I just got one with 600 lumens from Amazon for less than $15.

If you are a CCW license holder, your gun is not a replacement for good common sense. Your gun is not magical, and your permit to carry doesn’t make you a superhero.

Be aware of your surroundings and don’t go anywhere with your gun that you would not go without it.

I don’t carry a gun so I can go into bad places. I carry a gun because sometimes bad things happen to good people.

In short, if you have plans to go somewhere, and you think you’re going to need a gun,

cancel your plans. Watch out for who is watching you.

But please do be aware of your surroundings. Walking with your nose in your smart phone could lead to more serious problems than walking into a light pole, or stepping into an open man hole. Just last week, a local bank was robbed. I use that bank all the time. Due to the “gun-free” sign on the window, I always store my firearm in my locked console before dismounting from my truck. “Yessir, I heard him moan.” Little told him to open the gate, that he would draw enemy fire while they rescued the wounded man. “He opened the gate and I ran out and knelt down next to a dead VC and waited for the VC to fire again so I knew where the hell they were.”

The wounded guard was taken for treatment. Little and the duty officer ran down the street between the buildings and saw two mines the VC had set.

They sandbagged both so that no one would activate them, then went down to the canal where the VC had come from. They were gone. When they returned to the entrance gate, Little stopped. He sensed danger. “Wait a minute!” That’s when he got scared.

The buildings were full of Americans with weapons. “They don’t know us. They liable to shoot us,” he said. The duty officer yelled, “Hold your fire!”

They walked across the street and saw Col. Rausch and several soldiers. Rausch had two drinks in his hands. “I thought you could use one of these,” he said.

“I sure can,” replied Little and downed one.

They‘ll cut him to pieces. “ The colonel reconsidered and, instead, sent another officer and four men in a jeep. Says Little, “I later heard the VC cut them down.”

Little went to bed. The next morning the colonel in charge and his staff came marching into the mess hall where Little was having breakfast.

“Now they are combat ready; got on flak jackets, helmets and have weapons,” says Little.

“He asked if I was Major Little from Cang Long.

Little stood. “Yes sir.”

“Don’t you ever come back. The VC followed you here.”

“Sir, I’m from the hospital in Saigon,” replied Little.

“Don’t ever come back.”

“I sat back down and away he went,” says Little, who soon departed Saigon and returned to Cang Long.

Two weeks later Col. Rausch flew in and dropped off a case of beer.

“The colonel has put the duty officer and NCO in for a Silver Star,” he told Little.

“He’s not putting you in because he says the VC followed you up there.”

“I killed a lot of VC that

night,” replied Little, who knew the VC lived among them and could exact revenge anytime they wanted to. “I’d just as soon go home alive,” said Little. “Forget the Silver Star. Don’t tell anyone I did all those killings.”

The VC moved among the population and American soldiers were always at risk. “Sometimes you could tell who they were by the way they looked at you – hate in their eyes,” says Little.

“They would put Agent Orange in water pistols and spray Americans.

Once I was sprayed across the mouth when I passed a bunch of people.”

Shortly before departing Vietnam, Little picked up a piece of cheese on Sgt. Custer’s radio operations desk and ate it on the way to the team house. A rat awoke him gnawing on his finger.

“It must have smelled the cheese. I had to go to Saigon and get a rabies shot.” Meanwhile, President Johnson visited Saigon. “I was supposed to get an award from him, but my team didn’t know where I was. I didn’t learn about it until after the President left.” Little never inquired about the proposed award. His mind was on more important things – going home.

January, 1969, Major Little boarded a plane at Tan Son Knut Airbase and flew home.

a body bag, but neither was he whole. He carried scars and shrapnel to prove it. In California, he picked up Diane and his two sons and they drove across country to New York. “We rode on a 4-lane free as a bird. When we got to a toll booth at the New York State line, they had their hand out – gimme.”

Little didn’t like that.

Later, Little volunteered for the Green Beret, an elite Army group of select volunteers. This unique band of soldiers is summed up by a verse from S/Sgt. Barry Sadler’s song, “Ballad of the Green Berets”: “One hundred men will test today but only three will wear the Green Beret.”

After a tour of duty with the 1st Special Forces in Indonesia and Okinawa, Little was eventually stationed at Redstone in Huntsville.

“When I came to Alabama, they put out their hands, but unlike New York, it was to welcome us.” He retired as a Lt. Col. in January, 1981, and he and Diane have lived in Limestone County on the Tennessee River since then.

Both sons are Auburn ROTC graduates and served in the military.

Douglas spent 10 years in the Army Corps of Engineers and lives in South Carolina. Jeffery, a rocket scientist who lives in Madison, Alabama, spent 20 years in the Air Force.

Colonel and Mrs. Little have

5 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.

Col. Little, age 85, still has a clear mind, but his body doesn’t respond as quickly as it did when he was an Army skydiver with 150 jumps that earned him a broken leg.

A shadow box on Little’s wall filled with medals and ribbons tells the story of a brave American who did his duty and did it well. He holds 3 Purple Hearts, Bronze Star for valor, Parachutist Badge, Combat Infantry Badge, National Defense Services Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal and, the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Silver Star and Palm awarded for valor and heroic conduct while fighting the enemy. He is a Mason and a Shriner.

Having been challenged by bullets, booby traps, land mines, and mortar attacks in the past, this old warrior has taken up a new challenge – learning to play the organ. “That’s my passion now,” Little said and nodded toward an organ across the room.

“Would you like to hear Guy Lombardo?” he asked me, and struck up “Auld Lang Syne.”

Good job. “Here is my favorite,” he said, and played “Your Cheating Heart.”
