In general, the South seems to have the greatest balance and, until yesterday, those in power as well as the citizenry of the Great State of Alabama seemed to reflect the intent of the Framers when it comes to the right to bear arms. However, things do not seem to be so good in Guntersville, at least in the Mayor’s office. WAAY 31 ran a piece on Tuesday, February 26th that made me cringe.

Having said that, I am dismayed by the comments of Mayor Leigh Dollar. As a part of an ordinance that is designed to improve disaster response, Mayor Dollar sweetly stated that “by no

Her statement sounds innocent enough, but let’s think this through. How do you define “unruly?” If someone is “unruly,” are they dangerous? Do you need the SWAT team? Isn’t there already a framework in place that requires that someone do what an officer says when they are commanded to “put the weapon down?” Why do the citizens of Guntersville need another law when it comes to their behavior with specific regard to firearms?

Is it reasonable to even ask the question, “Could this be wrongfully used against citizens?” I think it is prudent indeed to raise that question and have that discussion. Most outrageous acts on the part of governments are carried out in increments. The overused but none the less accurate picture of the frog being boiled alive in the kettle I think is appropriate here.

Is Froggy possibly heading toward the boiling point?

No one would have ever thought that a city could determine what was appropriate when it comes to the consumption of soda, or making it possible for girls to get abortions without their parents ever knowing it, or making it impossible for women to protect themselves while outdoors by establishing “gun free zones” for the supposed “protection” of the citizens.

To me, that don’t make a lick of sense, and I hope the good folks of Guntersville vote this ordinance down.

Women’s History Month

March is celebrated as National Women’s History Month in thousands of communities and military bases throughout the world. This celebration, designated by Joint Resolutions of the House and Senate, and proclamations by six American presidents, is an opportunity to honor and celebrate women’s historic achievements.

The 2013 National Women’s History Month theme, Women Inspiring Innovation Through Imagination, celebrates women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics. As the country celebrates nationally, locally we will be celebrating our female veterans. The Alabama Veterans’ Museum and Archives will honor “Our women heroes of the Korean War, often referred

to as the Forgotten War.” Women have been “in” the military as far back as the Revolutionary War, where they served on the battlefield as nurses, water bearers, cooks, laundresses and saboteurs. During the civil war women provided casualty care and nursing to Union and Confederate troops. The Army Nurse Corps was established in 1901, followed by the Navy Nurse Corps established in 1908. During WW1, over 21,000 Army nurses served in military.

During WWII things really start happening, more than 60,000 Army nurses served stateside and overseas. In 1942, the Army established the Women’s Army Auxiliary Corps (WAAC), the Women Air Forces Service

Pilots (WASP) were organized and fly as civil service pilots, and the Navy recruits women into its Navy Women’s Reserve, called Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service (WAVES).

The Army-Navy Nurse Act of 1947 made the Army Nurse Corps and Women’s Medical Specialist Corps part of the Regular Army and gives permanent commissioned officer status to Army and Navy nurses, soon to follow suit in 1948 the rest of the service organization do the same, and finally in 1949 the Air Force Nurse Corp is established.

In 1950, fewer than five years after World War II had ended; the United States found itself once again con-

fronted by a war for which it was unprepared. As before, a downsized military establishment rushed to call up, draft and recruit manpower, but recruitment numbers fell short of military requirements. And just as in previous wars, the services turned again to American women to meet personnel needs, asking them to leave their homes, jobs and families to serve their country.

In celebrating women’s historic achievements, we present an authentic view of history. The knowledge of women’s history provides a more expansive vision of what a woman can do. It’s been many years since Winston Churchill and others said –

“In time of danger and not before Women were added to the corps With the danger over and all well righted War is forgotten and the women slighted.”

Today, according to the US Department of Defense, there are approximately 204,973 women in the military, and the recent groundbreaking decision to lift the ban for women in direct combat ground roles may just have been the push needed to finally ensure a move toward equality of the sexes. This retired MSgt would have to say, “We’ve come a long way, baby!”

Athens Insurance Center: Customer Service And Honest Answers

Neal Johnston is an Athens hometown boy who has made good in the insurance business. The reason, besides grace, is that he knows the power of customer service, and the benefit of giving honest answers, even when they aren’t easy. Insurance is not about cute geckos that speak with Aussie accents, as charming as they may be. In our world, it is the personal touch, and, as Neal says, “We will try to find the solution for you.” He is the owner of Athens Insurance Center, located on Hwy 31 near Wal-Mart, and I am a raving fan of AIC for reasons I’ll explain in just a bit.

Boom, just like that! I called their customer service department, thinking it would be no problem to remedy the situation, and was promised I could

They will both tell you they “kind of fell into it.” Neal first started working for an insurance agency while he was attending college, and Mari had all kinds of admin experience in related fields, applied for the position at AIC, took the training, got her license and loves it. “Mari is very good at what she does. She sees possibilities to help get coverage that I might not, and takes great care of our customers,” says Neal. Mari also happens to be fluent in Spanish. I asked her what she likes the best about her “unintended career.” “I am my own boss, love the independence, and love to get just the right policy for the customer.” I asked Neal the same question. “Writing a complicated commercial account that takes care of the customer, and getting referrals because of it. It makes you feel you’re doing a good job.”

“Everyone Deserves A Spa Day” Coming Soon To Medical Massage

On July 1st of 2012, Wendy Couch, owner of Medical Massage, had an open house at her practice’s new location just off the Square at 109 Marion Street in Athens, and it was a definite success. In fact, since then, business has been so good, that Wendy has been able to add a partner to her practice, a woman by the name of Janet Stubblefield.

There is no greater accolade than for one massage therapist to refer to another massage therapist as “my massage therapist,” and Ms. Janet is “the one.” Janet graduated with honors from Virginia Tech, and joined Wendy this past December.

Indeed the new location is ideal. It is roomy, serene, has potential for expansion of services, and always has the most soothing music playing.

And, speaking of soothing, Wendy and Janet are about to host a very special event from March 7th through March

10th called “Everybody Deserves A Spa Day.” Wendy told me, “The purpose of the event is to make it possible for our members to take advantage of some of our services that they may not have tried before, and to make our new services available for others to enjoy.”

So, what have these two cooked up? A spa day that promises to be memorable. I am no newcomer to massage or various modalities, but I learned about some new services, and the whole package sounds just heavenly. For $135, you are going to be treated to 4.5 hours of special treatments, at a rate that is well over half off a comparable day spa price. That also includes light refreshments, served in just the right amounts so that your body has what it needs, but isn’t burdened down with a heavy job of digesting a big meal.

“First we’ll start with an infra-

red session of 30 minutes,” Wendy told me.

“Infra-red? As in old style heat lamps?” She smiled kindly at my ignorance and explained that they now have tables that have jade stones in them. The stones are heated up, and loosen you up for actual massage, which happens at a much deeper level. “It’s like being out in the sun and getting sleepy, but without any of the sun’s damaging rays.

Most people lie on their back the whole time, and many fall asleep,” Wendy explained. The infra-red session will last for 30 minutes.

Next will be a 30 minute massage session. Both Wendy and Janet know everything from Swedish to deep tissue massage, and very soon are going to get their certification in prenatal and infant massage.

Buttercups, Er, Daffodils, Forsythia, And Albino Eagles

by Ali Elizabeth Turner In spite of his sore neck and the fact that he had to soon grab his red and white striped Cat In The Hat hat to go read to school kids, it was obvious that Mayor Ronnie had a spring in his step that was, at least, partly due to the fact that Spring was showing its dear face in Athens, Alabama.

Of course we had to get into our occasional and always friendly regional tiff over the proper name of the flowers that in part comprise the title of this article. I am from the

land of the Daffodil Parade and Daffodil Festival, and buttercups are very small, not grown from bulbs at all, and bloom much later than “daffs.” “In the South they are called buttercups, Ali,” he told me, and because he is the Mayor, I guess I had to concede. There was, by the way, no disagreement over the proper name for forsythia.

The weekend had been great, the sermon edifying, and he pruned back the yellow rose

of Texas bush at their house, which, he said, “was almost like fighting kudzu.”

He played golf at Canebrake and told me about the sight of a red-tailed hawk, nearly albino in its coloring, soaring, flashing its red tail, and his comment about it all was, “It just don’t get better than this.”

He told me about the success of Swamp John’s, one of many recent fundraisers in our town dedicated to fight cancer, and how proud he was of the fact

that Athens is “a caring community, one with great energy.” As always, we are staring down real challenges, and as of this writing, those include the portended effects of sequestration and budget cuts. “We’ll take on military cuts, we will wrap our arms around this community, and we will get through it,” he said.

In a time when the way government handles money can make tempers flare quickly and far, he told me something I did not know, and that is that the city budgets are reviewed every two weeks to see “if we are on track.” Boy, do I wish they would do that in Washington DC, and I am glad that here in Athens they are on top of it!

He bemoaned the fact that “nuts love unrest, they love to divide and conquer,” and talked about the possibility that if we aren’t careful, we are going to tear ourselves and

our country apart. “We need to roll our sleeves up, get to work, and work together.” We agreed that it is way easier to complain and grumble than come up with any solutions.

As usual, our time was way too short and somehow we managed to cover a lot of ground. And then, he was out the door, on to modeling to kids that there are values that stand, that reading is a good idea, and in our town, at least, the Mayor makes time to read to kids and encourage them to be their best selves.

So whether you call those yellow things buttercups or daffs, Spring is on its way, we are blessed, and we as a community are building one of the most wonderful towns in America, from the inside out.

Disturbing Facts Sadly, only 30% of all electronics are recycled in the first place, the rest going to landfills where they can leak lead, mercury, arsenic, cadmium, beryllium, and other hazardous waste if the landfill is not properly managed. According to a 2008 article in National Geographic, approximately 80% of the e-waste that IS recycled in the United States is exported to Asia. It is more profitable to ship the materials overseas than to process it properly in the United States.

When electronics are shipped to poor countries lacking in regulations, the e-waste often ends up in piles on open land. It is then “processed” by area residents using hammers to break apart computers, TVs, and other electronics, exposing themselves and the environment to very harmful byproducts.

Corn Casserole

Several weeks back I was asked to make a covered dish for a meeting at church. My reply was, “What would you like me to make?” The response was one I was not expecting. “ Just make a corn casserole,” she said.

My brain started searching for a recipe. All at once I remembered that years ago I had made one such thing!

I must say the recipe is quite tasty too. I had no complaints, and I am sure you will not either.

What you will need: 1 can whole kernel corn with liquid 1 can creamed corn 1 box Jiffy corn muffin mix 2 eggs 8 oz. sour cream 2 Tbs. sugar 8 oz. shredded sharp cheddar cheese Directions must be followed in order: In a large mixing bowl beat eggs and sugar together. Add sour cream and beat well. Add both cans of corn and beat well. Add jiffy mix and 6 oz. of cheese, mix well. Spray a 9 x 13 pan with Bakers Joy, pour mixture into pan. Sprinkle remaining cheese on top, and bake at 325F for about 45 minutes.

It’s My Birthday

I am about to celebrate my birthday. Normally I would not think too much about that. After all it is only another day. But, for some reason I can’t get out of my head how old I will be on my birthday.

Kurt Vonnegut is quoted as saying “True terror is to wake up and discover that your high school class is running the country.” Vonnegut is a 20th Century writer most famous for “Slaughter House Five,” published in 1969.

This year I am wondering how everyone else got so old while I feel so young.

My oldest daughter turned 40 last year – that was a surprise. In my mind she was still in her 20’s. Of course she can’t be in her 20’s, she has children in their 20’s.

Living in Athens, I get to see cousins and their children that I have not seen in quite a while. People I think are 12-14 are turning out to be 30-35. How in the world has this hap-

pened? It seemed like time stood still for me.

After all just a couple of years ago I was in my forties.

But it is not just that.

Last night at the dinner table, Ben and Brian were talking about how many changes happen in a generation. And they reminded me there were in a four generation picture with my in-laws.

Then I realized there are four generations in my line right now.

Sometimes I feel like I live in a time warp.

There are days when I

feel so young (at least in my 30’s). Then the next day I am aching and bent and just worn out (I must be at least 100). I guess the old saying is right – you ARE as young/old as you feel.

How many times have you walked into a room and don’t know why you went there?

The point of all this rambling is – yes, I am getting older – but things are not awful. Bette Davis, a 20th century actress and star of more than 100 films says “Old age is not for sissies.” In taking stock, I realize I have a lot to be thankful for. I think I will follow the advice of Oliver Wendell Holmes, an American Jurist who served on the US Supreme Court from 1902 to 1932. Holmes says, “Old age is 15 years older than I am.”

I just have to get my head wrapped around this birthday.

Maybe after the actual day I am celebrating things will go back to normal.

After all, it is not just about how you feel. It is about what you know. Of course some days I don’t even know what day it is.

Funny how you get busy and time runs all together. And when you have so many things on your mind, there is no telling

An added aspect to the “story behind the story” regarding this year’s particular charity 5K is that Matthew Kyle, (the owner of the Athens Chickfil-A outlet,) and his wife Ann have just brought home from China their daughter Addy Mei, (pronounced May, and which means ‘beautiful’ in Chinese.) The Kyles have two biological children, Lyndsay and Landon, and Addy has happily become their third child. Addy Mei was left at

an orphanage at the age of 3 weeks. Given China’s “one child rule,” as well as the fact that it is not at all uncommon for female babies to be killed at birth there, little Addy’s life most definitely has had God’s hand of mercy upon it. She hails from Jiang Xi province in SE China, and Matthew’s tale of the family meeting her and the instantaneous bonding that occurred with all of them will bring a tear to your eye. She calls him Bah Bah, and Matt says, “It’s like we have always all been together.”

After graduating law school, Michael and his wife, Glenna, moved back to Athens where they are raising their two sweet daughters.

He has been involved with several charitable organizations in Athens. Michael has enjoyed coaching basketball both for Upward and at the Athens Recreation Center. One of the traits I noticed about Michael is how he can explain complicated matters in a way that is easily understood. Attorneys are only required to attend twelve (12) hours of continuing education per year. Michael has done at least double that for most of the years he has been in practice. Honing his skills each year, Michael is an active member of the American Association of Justice (AAJ) and was published in their instructive materials for how to litigate bad faith insurance claims.

I asked him why he does not practice in just one area of law, such as divorce. Michael said “I don’t like doing almost the exact same thing every day. I enjoy the interaction of how owning a business might affect your divorce or if one person or the other declares bankruptcy while litigating a defective house claim. How the different areas of the law fit together interests me.” This might explain why Michael has helped clients throughout the State of Alabama and in six other states.

I asked Michael what case surprised him the most.

He said, “Well there are a couple of cases that come to mind. First, I never thought I would try a criminal defense case in Los Angeles, California. And, second, I did not contemplate trying

a corporate fraud case in Columbia, South Carolina.”

You don’t have to be a bodybuilder to reap the benefits of strength training. With proper form, strength training can help you lose body fat, increase your strength and muscle tone, and improve your bone density. When done incorrectly, weight training will result in minimal or no benefits — and may even end with an injury.

Check your technique You might try strength exercises by watching friends in the gym — but sometimes what you see is not safe and you may not understand what muscle group they are working. Incorrect strength training may lead to injuries.

Shoes with good traction can keep you from slipping while you’re lifting weights.

• Breathe. Do not hold your breath while you’re lifting weights. Holding your breath can lead to dangerous increases in blood pressure.

• Seek balance. Work all of your major muscles. Strengthen opposing muscles groups.

Do not spot train.

• Rest. Avoid exercising the same muscles two days in a row.

• Warm-up. Cold muscles are more prone to injury than are warm muscles. Warm up with five to 10 minutes of walking or other aerobic activity.

• Keep it slow. Move weights slowly. Taking it slow helps

I see so many of you, in Athens, who have dogs, some I see riding around town with them, others I see walking them, and in some funny cases, I see you being walked by them. So, let’s discuss what I observed.

They are happy because they get to swing you this way and that. They have figured that you need a lot of exercising. Your lower back and arms are killing you and you are ready to smack the dog but you hold out. Some of you are ready to give up and just go back to the house.

A six foot leash is recommended because we want to train the dog to walk close to your side. What kind of collar does your dog have on, or do you have a harness on? Harnesses are great but should be placed on your dog after they are trained to walk properly unless you want your dog to work by pulling something. In many instances I recommend the pinch collar which is the evil looking chain collar that has prongs faced in. Many of you see this device and cringe because you believe you can maim your “Baby”. It is a training tool and should only be used with training.

The President won re-election; the Republican Speaker of the House wasted no time in caving on the most monolithic of conservative principles—taxes; the presumed rising star of the Republican Party, Marco Rubio, has entertained the idea of regulating the Internet.

It’s reasonable to ask when, how, and if conservatism will make a comeback.

The answer to “if” is yes.

But when, and how?

The promising point that seems to have been lost in the conversation is that liberalism didn’t win last November. Among the diverse and often ridiculous reasons pundits posited for the election going the way it did wasn’t the President’s performance. Romney lost it. It might have been the perception that he was a rich guy only concerned with helping the rich, or perhaps that he wasn’t a bona fide conservative.

Whatever the case, no one other than recipients of Obama phones (who, it’s safe to say, didn’t vote in droves) has suggested that Obama earned a second term.

The hallmark of his first term was health care, and those in his party who voted for it suffered electoral consequences. Liberalism isn’t popular these days, both among the electorate and among those in Congress who continue to embrace it.

Meanwhile, Conservatism has been conspicuously absent at Republican Party headquarters around the nation. Battered wife syndrome is alive and well and burning the party. Republicans are more afraid of being called

cally? Hagel as Secretary of Defense, and, assuming higher taxes with Republican complicity, a slower economy. In other words, liberalism will be practiced—and, as always when it is, it will fail.

It hasn’t been until recently (thank you, the Internet) that the immediate results of bad policy have been immediately evident. The “how” answer about conservatism’s comeback is technology. It exposes the truth.

As to when it happens, the answer lies not in technology, but rather in how long it takes for conservatives en masse to recognize that the people are on their side.

Both, of course, are as important as they are symbiotic. Without lower taxes to grow the economy, there’s only so much you can do to be militarily strong. And President Obama, as evinced by his choice of Chuck Hagel to be defense secretary, wants a weak military.

Security Savvy

“FORE!!”

This is frequently the cry of the duffer of the sport called golf. I have been golfing since 2009, and sometimes I find that it can be anything but relaxing.

7. Don’t overload the golf cart. They are only designed for two people.

You may think it’s harmless to let someone ride on the back, but they can be seriously injured or killed if you lose control.

It is considered the sport of gentlemen and woman. It is a sport that can be very rewarding and humbling.

Here are some tips to keep you safe while chasing the elusive white ball.

1. Make sure you lock your car after getting your clubs out. Drop your keys in the bag.

2. Before you tee off, be aware of the people around you as you take those practice swings so your afternoon of golf doesn’t turn into an afternoon at the emergency room.

3. Before you take your first fairway shot, give a quick look around to be sure that no one is in your line of sight. If

someone walks into the line of fire after you take that shot, shout out a warning. “FORE” will usually make everyone duck!

4. Don’t ever hit a ball into a group in front of you because you think they are moving too slow. Keep in mind that a golf ball at that speed hitting someone in the head can be deadly. Be patient. If you

have to, ask if you can play through.

5. If you hear “FORE” while you are golfing, don’t act like a Meerkat duck. Instead crouch behind your cart or a tree.

6. When using a golf cart please be careful. It is just like driving a car. Watch your speed and please don’t drink and drive. Wait until

8. Stay on the designated golf path. Golf carts are not made for four wheeling.

9. Watch your arms and legs if someone else is driving, and remain in the cart until it comes to a complete stop.

EMTs probably won’t have time to grab your $400.00 driver and that could be lost too.

10. Most carts do not have

safety belts. Be especially careful taking corners.

11. Remember children do not weigh as much as adults, so slow down. A little a dip in the golf path could be enough to send a child flying out of the cart.

In closing, still being relatively new to Alabama, I am always looking for golf partners (you know how to reach me).

Still being somewhat new to the game, you may want to bring protective gear!
